My wife says, "How about if that's something just YOU do?" I have never really tried to get her into mountain biking. I really think she would love it. My plan right now is to get our 3 kids into it then she will want to come with us. Of course she might like the peace and quiet of all of us being gone too...

I have a 4, 7, 8 year old boys. All got Mountain Bikes this year to upgrade from their BMX style bikes. We got mom out a few times with us now. The rides are a different pace for sure than a "guys" ride, but having family time together on the bikes is pretty dang satisfying! Now I just need to get her convinced to get a better quality bike that is comfortable for her instead of her stealing my XC spec'd entry hardtail that was my first step in to MTB life.

My husband and I ride together all the time (we got lucky, we both loved the sport when we met), but it’s so true. Being out on the trail is a break from the serious business side of our relationship (work, parenting, bills, etc) and it lets us get out and have fun together again! It’s such a great reminder of our favorite things about each other. It’s a good time.

I've been mountain biking 30+ years and my new bride started 4 months ago. Here's what we are learning:
    1. Look at maps ahead of time and try trails that are new to BOTH of you. We try to find parking close to beginner and intermediate trails so that we don't have to navigate through miles of "hike-a-bike" before we get to something she can actually ride.
    2. Frequency - we are lucky to have well maintained (and pretty easy) trails just 3 miles from the house. We are there 3-4 times a week practicing. The more often she goes, the more comfortable she gets on the bike.
    3. TEACH THE BASICS - my wife was struggling on the quick climbs because she was always in the wrong gear... something I never thought to directly instruct. But it's not obvious to someone who is not used to the sport. She just assumed that a flat section merited a harder gear, and then got caught off guard by a sudden climb.
    4. Communicate about what matters in a ride - mountain biking is a mental AND a physical sport. The physical component matters more to my wife, while the mental (and technical challenge) is more important to me. We had to find a happy medium.
    5. Don't forget, it's all about having fun and enjoying the sport as a team..... oh, and bring plenty of snacks!

I saw this video pop up yesterday and put it up on the tv with my 8 y/o son and my wife. while my son has been joining me more and more, my wife has not had much interest. Watching this video totally lit a fire for her, and as soon as we were done i put on a video of Duthie mtb park in Issaquah, WA, and upon watching that she sat up, told me to get the bikes ready asap and within an hour we were on our way to Duthie. we spend several hours there yesterday, had an awesome time, and now my wife has officially been infected with the mtb bug. thanks for the channel and for putting up this video, it was the impetus for my wife to get interested in something that i am super passionate about!!

I got my wife into mountain biking, I had been riding for about 6 months or before she started.
Making sure she was always comfortable with her bike/gear was important.
Patience is key don't rush into doing trails until they have learned some basics of body position/feet placement, brake control and cornering.
Also don't expect that someone won't be scared of things that you aren't scared of everyone is different.
Making sure that they are most importantly having fun, if not find some different kind of trails until they can enjoy the harder trails.
My wife was scared of everything on the trail when she first started riding (learning on the north shore isn't exactly easy) but now she enjoys double black jank trails.

I totally agree. I’ve been slowly getting my wife into mountain biking and I’m slowly getting there. We are lucky that we have some great beginner trails close to home. She has now done two gravity enduro races in their “challenger” taste of enduro class, and she really enjoyed it. I think the key is be patient, don’t push too hard, and recommend a skills course.

Just watched this vid with my wife who actually got me back into biking 4 years ago and we had so many ahah moments.I liked the comment that each ride was like a date because it’s a journey and adventure together. FYI we always share a kiss and a hug after each ride and she always has a better bike than me no matter how much I try to upgrade.

Great video. I recently converted my wife & kids to single track riders, and it’s been amazing. Big mistake I initially made was talking about gnarly features on trails we would be riding, and it turned out to be a confidence killer. Even though their skill level was up to the task, I had basically talked them out of the ride before we even started.

My husband got me into mountain biking and I freakin love it. I get better every time we go out and have more fun every time, too. I will say I am recovering from a knee injury from it but I'm stoked to get back out there (with protective gear on, lol).

  • @andreaell140

Great advice! I don't think my husband did this on purpose, but we often rode with at least one other person (or couple) when I was starting out. This helped us leave our couple baggage out of the ride. On these rides, trail decisions would be made based on group conversations and we could all talk about upcoming trail features together (Ryan talked about his stoke goggles and forgetting about tougher sections that would throw a beginner off or be pedally without speed). I suspect that if we were alone I probably would have called rides quicker, refused to do certain trails and vocalized much more frustration. This way, I had a say but I also did not want to let the group down and ultimately pushed myself harder. I could also learn from other people and hear other perspectives. I think this helped me improve more quickly and really get into the culture of mountain biking.

What you said about riding trails at a slow speed is so spot on. I have 3 daughters who ride the younger 2,9 &12, want to ride the same trail as myself and the older one,15. So I do take them out to intermediate/advanced trail and they don't enjoy it because they see tech coming and slow down and then they get bounced around or can't clean stuff because they have killed their momentum. I constantly trying to get them to lay off the breaks and let the bike do the work. I'm caught in a tough spot because they want to try tougher trails but I don't want them to be discouraged when they struggle with them.

It's important to understand the "why"...why does your partner want to ride? So when I go with the guys, we like to pound up the climbs and get as rad as our 40+ bodies will allow us on the descent. But when I go with my wife, that's not the reason she goes. She likes the challenges and the workout, but she mostly just likes being outside with me. She likes to take in scenery, hear the birds, be in the sun. So I try to make sure that I always remember what mind set to have. As a result we've ended up spending a lot of great quality time together.

My husband got me into Mountain Biking, but it helped that I was already a Roadie. I spent the summer trying out different bikes and now that I have my own, we can either spend some time either on the road or the trails. We have also learned that while we do spend time riding together, he needs time to ride with the boys and I need time riding with the girls.

This was great to find. I have been riding pretty hard for 30 years from bmx to mtb. I just recently sold the junk bikes my wife and I had. She was never comfortable on hers and did not trust it so she didn't like to ride. I was going to get me a good bike and out of no where she wanted to get one too. Now we have good Giant bikes and she wants to ride. This was a good reminder for me to take it easy and be patient. I am going to have her watch this too so she sees the perspective. Thanks for making this video.

Having brought my now wife into biking, I think the awareness of the ability and the trails challenges were the biggest learning for me. My wife broke her leg walking her bike down a trail that was over her head and its going to be years to build her back up to where she was before that, if she ever gets there. Its more of a mental game for beginners than it is for someone who has ridden their bikes their whole lives.

    • @TheLoamRanger
      @TheLoamRanger  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Dang that’s brutal about her leg. I completely agree about the mental aspect.

I needed this video last week! Just picked up a new bike for my fiance, and I pushed her to size up to the medium for the longer reach as I thought it would make her 'blast' the descents harder than before. Completely backfired lol. She much preferred the shorter reach for the slower speed maneuverability and nimbleness on both the climbs and descents. Great tips!

My husband doesn't want to ride with me... He's just a tech geek who doesn't want to go out into nature :/ (I mean so am I, that's how we met, I'm a senior software engineer.) I'd like to hope that I'm doing things right, at least the bike part eh, he's got really cool bike now that will help him keep up. What I could do better and now thanks to your video realize is that I do try to drag him into more difficult trails. I need to chill out sometimes heh.

Awsome video guys and gave me some great tips moving forward with my wife and I 👍👍
She was so excited about MTB riding at Xmas time on the east coast of Australia where we normally sort of do our own thing , she is a horse rider and I freedive/spear fish so we normally go our separate ways but this time over a 10 day period I only dove once and we rode together every other day and my wife said it’s the best holiday we’ve had together ❤️🥰🥰
She currently riding a hard tail Kona and just progressed to blue trails and was so excited 😆 at the end of the first day like a little kid on a sugar high , bouncing around asking when we could do it again 😎
I almost completely stuffed that up as we’d never ridden these trails before, I just went on the assumption that the blue trails should/would be graded the same 😬👎, not so and she ate dirt and hit a tree in the first 30 minutes completely shattering her confidence 😬😢
I managed to turn this around and luckily , swiftly bought her confidence back on some beautiful flowing Green trails the next day and now we ride together at least twice a week ! 🥰
Thanks for the tips and love your Chanel ! Cheers 🍻 from Oz 😎

I tried to get my wife in to biking just casually to get out, lose weight together, be together away from home and finally over 2 years later she tells me all I did wrong. I ride too fast, we rode mostly gravel multiuse paths. That was the big 1 and I didnt even notice I was leaving her behind. Then the next year our daughter learned to ride a bike and instinctively I rode right beside her or let her lead. Now I know that is how to get my wife in to riding, let her lead the pace. If a hill is too much walk up together, pushing up passed her isnt going to help, another thing I do with my daughter. So basically in the end I learned I need to bike with her as if shes 7and new on a bike, not in her 20s with experience on a bike from 10 years ago. That experience is long gone.

(no word of a lie) As I was sitting at the computer, waiting for a female friend of mine to arrive and head out on her first official trail ride, this video appeared on my feed. The trail system here in Kitchener, ON, Canada, isn't really newbie friendly so I was kinda worried she running away screaming never again (it's one of the few trail systems open). However, I spent most of the ride saying "ride half speed" to myself, and she did fine. I also put her on my bike thinking I could ride my enduro, thinking the full sus would be more fun than her low end hardtail, but the standover height the bike too large. Thanks for the tips. I may have converted someone to MTB.

Very considerate! I am so lucky to have a guy friend who facilitated my intro to MTB. He is a perfect combo of making me feel safe while letting me lead and figure out things myself without judgement. It's better to let a new rider know you are there if they need help/ a ride buddy and let them experience the thrill of taking on new tasks themselves than telling them what to do.
Taking pictures is also good reinforcement for how fun and awesome the day was and how competent they are.

When we were dating I told my future wife that if she wanted to stay together we would not ski together. I went with my friends while she took a class or hung out with her more patient friends. After a couple decades of marriage she finally said she wanted a bike so we bought her the bike she wanted. Nothing fancy but it fit and felt good to her. My goal with cycling (she doesn't venture off paved surfaces yet) for my wife is that she has a positive experiance each time out. It's about her experiance when we do ride together.

My wife and I got into it more or less together after our youngest kid was around 1. We both needed a summer sport to get back into shape. I'd mountain biked a bit 20 years before (hardtail days), she never had, but we live in a mountain town where most of our friends MTB. We both got entry level all mountain bikes. I progressed much quicker in fitness and skill, but still made sure to go out with her for some rides. I think she did a basic skills weekend course. And started riding with some girlfriends, that helped lots.
One thing that is probably a don't: going for a date ride, then as we're riding home begging off to go and do another hour of trail riding. Kind of says: I had fun riding with you, but now I need to do some real exercise.
We're definitely different skill levels, and unless the kids have their grandparents around, we don't normally get to ride together too often, so I do enjoy riding with her even though it's slower paced. Aside from the joy of spending time together in an activity we both enjoy, it's also nice to ride trails at a slower pace (for me), as I get to enjoy different aspects of the riding (more looking around, slow skills, not being out breath).

For those getting their wives into biking did you get her a simple hardtail or go all in with a full suspension to make her feel more comfortable?

Hey buddy! I just came across your channel and see your experienced with video... I dont know anybody that is and I truly need help! I'm buying my 1st motorcycle and want a camera JUST IN CASE OF A ACCIDENT, I need something that can run on a external battery for 4-6 hours and record the whole time. It would be a plus if while running on a external battery it could also use a external mic (not a must, but a plus) I heard of loop recording but might be confused. I'd like to throw a 128gb or 256gb sd card in and hit record, then when I run out of memory I'd like it to start recording over the beginning of the card from the oldest part of the video onward. Is there ANY WAY YOU CAN HELP ME. IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY APPRECIATED. Or if any of your subscribers can help!!!! Thanks guys/gals ......... I did subscribe!!

Why does it always SEEM like the husband is one trying to convince the wife to get into a sport? I would venture to say that most women don’t gravitate toward activity but rather spend time with other activities.
