I am from europe so driving stick isn't really an issue for me.. unfortunately we don't learn rev matching and all that kind of stuff so the video is still helpful though

Best "How to?" Video ever. I'm a road racer and drove lots of manual cars and know many shifting technics and yet I found this video very entertaining. Nice work man.. Keep it up
I learned how to drive stick two years ago on my sister's new Scion xD. I practiced a bit in an empty parking lot and went on the road. I remember stalling 6 or 7 times in a row at a stop sign with traffic behind me trying to pull away. Luckily nobody honked and they understood what was happening. Now I work around cars and I have gained enough experience to do this successfully and smoothly thanks to numerous videos I watched like this. Not to mention, on some days, I'm the only one who knows how to at work.
Lol I have a pretty sick story of stalling my car.. I was at a T intersection where I needed to make a left turn into the main road from a backroad. There was kind of a lot of cars and I was waiting for a gap for like 5 minutes. I see a pretty small gap and I go for it. I guess I miscalculated how much gas I put in and I quickly let off the clutch and stalled right in front of the other cars. They all slow down and stop as I'm there in the middle of the road. I start it and try and quickly get out of the way and I stall it AGAIN when I try to get out. I look around and people see that I'm driving stick and they're kinda laughing at me lol. I start the car again and finally after like 45 seconds of being in the middle of the road get my car out of the way. Lol the people I was in front of wave at me and give me thumbs up LOL. My biggest fail ever.. And this was after driving manual for like 6 months.. I never stall and it was just a hella derp moment. oh well, I still
I just recently bought a 2002 vw passat 5spd after not driving stick for like 10 yrs, I'm 45 and I seriously forgot how much fun and intimidating it can be! Thank god my bestie Cheryl let me every so often get in her 2010 Mazda 3 to see if I still had it in me!!! I'm getting so much better on hills and theres this one road u have to be quick to cross!!!!
excellent video, the explanation of being able to choose where and when you want the power is excellent...keeping the engine at a higher rpm while maintaining your current or chosen gear is something you just can't do easily! I watched a bunch of these videos and honestly your's is the best, just relaxed and easy to understand without unnecessary complication.
I love this! One thing to the best moto young. Best way to keep your clutch as long as possible. All of my drives were manual. 1958 Morris Minor, 2 Sciroccos, 1997 Isuzu over 300,000 miles original clutch and 2011 Mini I own today. I rarely down clutch. Neutral is your best friend, especially at a stop! It disengages your clutch. Less engagement when not in use will save it. When I need to slow down....I put in neutral. Yep, when you do this, have to know where your gears are. Also, seriously! Never rest on the clutch with your hand while waiting, or changing!!!😊
Believe me; I've watched quite a few tutorials on how to drive a manual; and let me tell you; this is probably hands down the best one to date. You're easy to understand, informative and engaging, and added a few other little advance moves but not to much which was great. Thanks for that. And saw a few other videos too, and now you've got a new sub here lol
When you went from second to fifth my heart stopped. You should have made a comment as to discourage from doing that regularly and to NEVER do it when downshifting. Maybe an annotation? Other than that, great video. Very relaxed, to the point and easy to pick up.
Awesome video! I'm getting a manual tomorrow! Very excited. Watching this gave me more confidence about getting it from the dealership, back to my house haha
Damn... Wish I watched this yesterday! I was forced into driving a stick yesterday (and I've only driven a stick once before.... 3years ago). I was like "I'm never getting manual" After watching this tutorial, I want to go out and learn again haha 😁 Great video as always!
Great video. At 30, I'm FINALLY learning how to drive one. You answered all the questions that I was curious about and you make it look fun as hell. The whole Rev matching and rpm thing is still confusing, but I'll eventually get it. I'm learning basics on an STI, but I'm definitely getting a beater to practice on :-)
I already know all this but it was still entertaining to watch. Somethings I am curious about though; Can you still in high gears (2nd, 5th etc), In depth on burnouts and peeling out, which gears will make you faster( you are racing from 0, do you redline 1st or shift to 2nd or 3rd and then go high revs).
You forgot to say the car will move even without pressing the gas as long as it's in a gear. To do this you just have to put 1 gear for eg, and as you stop pressing the clutch the car will move. So you can, for example, perfectly park your car without touching the gas. This is important becouse if you are in a red light, on 1st gear and drop all the pedals, the car will accelerate. Also, this is why you should press the clutch while breaking, as, if you don't, you will both accelerate and break your car at the same time. Anyway this was a pretty good video 👍 (Sorry for my bad English)
It does this becouse the gear is still in contact with the transmission unless you press the clutch (don't know the English names of those parts but you know what I'm talking about)
Thank you, this was so helpful, I just bought myself my first car and obviously it has to be stick cause why not lol but yeah I didn't really know a lot about driving stick and this video really helped me, thanks.
7:39 I thought braking without engaging the clutch would cause stalling but apparently he didn't put his foot on the clutch while braking, can somebody explain?
He downshifted from 3rd to 2nd to make a turn. The car still has speed while downshifting and the rpms is high enough to prevent the car from stalling. That's why you don't need to engage the clutch while braking
Yeah man, was just overthinking about the whole situation, I hate stalling it's so embarrassing then just got told that it's nearly impossible for a car to stall if it's on high speed and on high rpms :)
A really older friend/uncle of mine had not driven standard for 5 years but have experience of more than 20 years with stick. Also the person who thought me to drive stick when i was 15. Funny thing is when i got lift from him using his sons car, he stalled on the the middle of busy intersection causing a chaos. Did not know 5 years of complete silence from driving standard can cause you you to forget your 20~ years of experience.
You can also leave the car in Neutral when off, that way you don't have to press the clutch while starting it. Just a comfort tip :P Love ur videos milan!
No you don't, I'm from Argentina and no car needs that sort of thing. You only have to do it if you're IN a gear (e.g. if you leave the car parked in 1st) which, in my opinion, is wrong. The car should always be left in neutral. (MT)
Well, that may be true for some cars but my Elantra requires I push the clutch pedal in completely regardless if it is in any gear or in neutral. I guess Hyundai wanted to be different in their early 2000s models. :/
Milan dude you're fuckin' awesome! Just got a beetle and I'm learning how to drive it. this video helps me so much and your awesome personality while you teach keeps the viewer paying attention and not wandering off during the video. keep up the good work man!
I've had a huge passion for cars ever since I was a little kid. When I was younger, my father owned 2 car washes and I'd get to see all of the new cars and he would teach me what they are. Then got into teaching me the basics of washing a car, some basics about the mechanical aspects of cars, and then it just took off from there :) All I can say is TH-cam has a lot to offer. There is tons of information out there, you just have to find it. When I was in University for Math, I would spend more time learning about cars than I did about my actual program...
+Gary Kwan Don't need to do it. Just don't dump the clutch when engaging it. I have a car with 170000k's with still the original clutch. The only time I rev match is on the bike. Come to think of it, I don't know of anyone who blips on downshift (unless they are driving a truck). The only time I feel like I need to do it is I skip a few gears to bring the revs right up.
If I slow down for a stop light and I drop down to first gear, would I still need to balance my rpm's while I'm sitting there? Or would I not need to worry about it?
Omg milanmastracci bro. This helped so much im new to driving. And im learning in manual. Ive watched a few of your vids and even rev matching sounds great. I hate the feeling of downshifting and the car just jumps.
what do i do in this situation: as i am approaching a red light i shift out of gear into neutral and as im slowing down the light turns green and everytime I put it in a gear the tires screech or the car jerks badly so what should I do? it happens all the time.
Never let the car coast in neutral. Not bad for the car, but it's hopeless driving technique. Practice going down trough the gears, *take your time and work the clutch smoothly.* If you want quick downshifts you must use throttleblipping technique.
So if I'm going at 70 mph on the 5th gear and need to slow to 50 mph as soon as possible do I need to downshift to what gear? Do I need to apply the brakes and the clutch at the same time? If I'm in a heavy traffic of stop and go, do I need to stay in 1st gear and play with the gas and the clutch?
You should always start form neutral. That way you are not depressing the clutch all the time, and wearing out the bearings. The exception to the rule is when the manufacture puts in a lock that prevents the car from being started unless the clutch is depressed.
+milanmastracci Me, personally, I have a tuned SAAB 9-3. it's a 2.0 Turbocharged pushing 17psi and makes about 250 horses. Which is great for the small euro hatchback it is (no TCS either!) It's an automatic, and luckily with the tune I have a lot more freedom in my Rev range before a gear shift kicks in. I've also just started driving my dad's 08 Subaru Legacy in some of my free time. However, that car has a 5-speed manual. I can shift great everywhere EXCEPT when I'm starting from a stop. It annoys the crap out of me to be honest. I know I gotta drive it more to really learn how to balance the clutch and gas pedal, but for the couple times I've driven it, I haven't stalled it at all, but I have had some very shaky starts. Perhaps I dump the clutch too quickly and slam the gas pedal too hard (one or the other) but often times the car shakes back and forth before smoothing out. As long as I don't hit lights, it's smooth as a baby. I'm sure in time I'll learn to launch from stops smoothly. In the words of my dad, it's a "balance between the clutch and gas, like magnetic poles or Ying and Yang"
The way I learned how to drive manual was to buy a manual for my first car. My friends drive manuals also, but I wouldn’t really learn anything driving their cars a few times. I wasn’t a complete noob, I knew how driving a manual worked, but I’ve never actually done it. One week later and I was driving my car with no issues. Only problem I still have are hills. And it’s not really the hill it’s the people who pull up right behind your bumper.
Even though my jeep Jk is an auto, with a different exhaust is so much more fun. Although granted I've drive all of 2 sticks (ranger and a fiesta at) I've definitely fallen for a manual. I already love driving as is so my next vehicle has to have a stick. Great video btw.
When going from R to D, do you have to come to a complete stop, like you would in an automatic? Or as long as you push the clutch, then switch, is it okay to go straight back to D? Full stop seems like common sense, but I'm not sure in this situation.
Im new to driving, and when i rev match, i blip the throttle, and i always overshoot it, so i wait around 1 secound or so more before i engage the clutch again, is this bad for my clutch?
My SVT Focus is probably the easiest when it comes to clutch engagement and modulation. So difficult to get it wrong or stall, almost feels like a big V8 with a stick. I've driven Subarus and Toyotas with a stick, but they were more what I call "sloppy", more stretched out.
So much easier on a bike cuz you can feel the vibrations and motor and clutch release all in your crotch. In this Chrysler crossfire I just got it’s so quiet and smooth so you don’t really feel it ya know. First stick I drove was a straight piped wrx and it was honestly easier cuz you could really hear it. Also I keep accidentally going from 2nd to fifth instead of third lol. I think I got it now though just took a lot to learn the release of it.
I have a 2014 Honda civic si and noticed my drive is very different and rough when I have the air conditioning on...could you explain how to drive smoothly with the ac on?
If you fully stretch your left leg during the pushing in of the clutch you have more chance of dying in a car accident. reason for this is that your leg will lock and causing your hip go out of your body wich makes it hard for firemen to get you out of your car since you will be stuck to your seat.

Hey man this was a great video with a lot of detail, I myself learned on my dads 67 gto
+Billy Paffas Thats awesome!! Quite the first car to drive manual in ahah
I never drove a manual car before! I want to drive that!
Even though my jeep Jk is an auto, with a different exhaust is so much more fun. Although granted I've drive all of 2 sticks (ranger and a fiesta at) I've definitely fallen for a manual. I already love driving as is so my next vehicle has to have a stick. Great video btw.
When you pull up to a stop sign can you take off again while still in 2nd or do you always want to drop back to 1st?
Great video thanks for the info.
+Darren Richardson No problem Darren :)
When going from R to D, do you have to come to a complete stop, like you would in an automatic? Or as long as you push the clutch, then switch, is it okay to go straight back to D? Full stop seems like common sense, but I'm not sure in this situation.
how do you get the car to move forward smoothly if you have a steep driveway
Never sell your accord bro! and if you do, let me buy it. I'll drive up lol, this thing is awesome!
i suggest a video how handle uphills and downhills or steep hills with stick shift cars
Do you have to shift to neutral after a stall and when u stop, dont think so
alright thanks great videos milan keep it up!
+BRENDAN West Thanks buddy!! :)
Oh because I have a 97 gt and most of the time when I downshift it jumps how do I avoid that
Im new to driving, and when i rev match, i blip the throttle, and i always overshoot it, so i wait around 1 secound or so more before i engage the clutch again, is this bad for my clutch?
I think I got it now though just took a lot to learn the release of it.
would you recommend installing a dead pedal?
I bought a manual without knowing how to drive one as my first car and I don't regret it one bit love my civic si
+ThatOneKid Glad to hear!! Long live the manual!!! 👍
Hot guy, good instructions. No complaints here ;)
Great job man 👍
Thanks for posting video really helped 👍🏻
