- What better way to kick off our inaugural month of "Spooktober" than with a video I started working on almost a year ago?!
In this video, I and the INFAMOUS Disney Dan will be going over the history and changes to Disneyland's seasonal overlay for the Haunted Mansion.

folks go absolutely mental for the holiday overlay in japan. every other time of year, the haunted mansion is a walk-on attraction, but during the holiday season it's one of the longest waits in the park

You completely forgot to mention that it also SMELLS OF GINGERBREAD. That’s one of the main things I always remember and love.

I think instead of having sally only in the cemetery they should take out the bride and replace her with a sally animatronic wearing a colorful patchwork wedding dress instead of her normal short patchwork dress does anyone else agree?

Thematically that's kind of weird cause the attic is now 'hidden present' themed. Maybe Sally making/wrapping her gift for Jack (the picnic basket) or sewing stockings or something.
Absolutely. And the hatbox ghost could possible be replaced by either the top hat ghoul from the movie or the clown with the tear away face. I understand many people still want to see him and he’s still a fan favorite everyone wants to see but in a couple years they could do it.
A really interesting fact about the Nightmare Before Christmas decorations is that the vast majority of them are actually stored within the ride, and only the bigger pieces like the animatronics or exterior decorations are stored on an off property location. Many of the interior pieces are simply tucked away behind the main features, ie. in the attic, most of the Christmas additions are simply tucked underneath the tablecloths, or are painted on certain faces to simply blend in with the rest of the attic and can be turned around for the overlay. It is pretty impressive how they handle all of it.
they should replace the christmas presents with new lock shock and barrel animatronics, it'd be much more interesting to see them in your doom buggy i think
In actuality, there WERE lock shock and barrel animatronics in the mirrors for the first incarnation of HMH, but they changed it to Oogie and the presents the year after. They’re still at Tokyo Disneyland though!

Carlos Duarte I really hope they’ll do that in the future, I would love to experience the overlay myself but I’m afraid we’re never gonna get it in Paris
I'm actually curious how would a Nightmare Before Christmas overlay work in the Manor, story-wise. The Haunted Mansion's lack of story helped out in that aspect, but I feel the Manor's straightforward storyline would pose a storytelling challenge to the Imagineers.

My parents and I really enjoy going on Haunted Mansion Holiday annually in October. Thanks for thinking of us even though we love the Hatbox Ghost. He's our favorite character and we really enjoy his lighting effects which are animations that everyone (not just the 3 of us alone) gets to observe when the Black Christmas Sleighs (Festive version of the Doombuggies) exit the attic.
That's crazy weird that they'd have so many animatronics - Jack, Sally, Oogie, the Giant Snake, etc. - for something that's only seasonal. And for WDW to reject 'em outright! Oh well; good for you Tokyo Disney. At any rate, it's all super impressive - looks and sounds awesome and practically feels like it's own Nightmare Before Christmas ride when all is said is done. You guys did a great job with this topic. Thanks, Park Ride History, and - _our pal_ - Disney Dan! (^_~)

Barry-Allen The-Flash The WDW version is superior to the DL version year round. Its a lot longer, updated, and has an interactive queue. Also some interactive features with the magic bands, a great shop and even a restaurant planned about it
Since WDW receives mostly international visitors, changing this classic attraction for the season would mean foreign visitors who visit during Oct (and cant get back anytime soon) will miss the main version of the attraction. DL has the need to change a little every season, because most people who visit are locals
Yeah, I've been hearing that about WDW versions of things more and more in general these days since they simply have way more room to work with in Florida than they do in WDL, but I never considered the international visitors angle on it before. That's a damn good point - thanks for pointing that out!

I believe the reason that the one in wdw doesn’t get the overlay is because unlike Land, wdw is seen more as potentially once in a lifetime for some families. The ride would have to go down for extended times for the overlay to be put on and taken down. Not to mention the normal haunted mansion being completely unavailable while it is up. It robs a family of a incredibly well known ride that they might only get one chance to go on. Land doesn’t have this problem as it is seem more as a park for people on the west coast since it is not as sprawling as wdw

They were actually able to just place a lot of props and stuff over what already exists in the ride.
Yes. It's an overlay. I know this because one time when I was in the stretching room, one of the paintings malfunctioned during the stretch, and snapped back down to reveal the original painting underneath.

@@spunchbop47428 I admittedly don't remember which one it was, as it was a few years ago. I think it was the one with the killer wreath, but I could be wrong. I don't even remember which painting it was covering. :P However, I definitely remember it snapping back up, like a retractable window shade. It was just funny to see something like that happen. I'm used to ride breakdowns, but not parts of the decor actually coming undone.
I wish haunted mansion would only have the nightmare overlay during Christmas.
Instead in October, Disney should do like a super scary version of the haunted mansion and turn it from spooky to terrifying.
Try looking at Disneyland France's Phantom Manor
jeebs621 the issue would be that they don’t want to have to close it down too long for changing decorations. It’s already closed for weeks to go back and forth from normal to holiday, and they don’t want to make fans mad by adding several days of closure at least for another version.

I'm in Orlando and they need to do this overlay here!!! I mean seriously! There are so many fans here of the film and ride! I mean seriously!! We only get Jack and Sally characters here during Halloween. It's kind of sad

I recently visited Disneyland and the part where Jack is dressed as Santa in the snow looks SO impressive. There are a lot of things that I love about that ride. Nightmare is also my favorite movie so I might be a tad bit bias lol
Oh, and when you look in the mirror when you get your present Lock Shock and Barrel pop up.
A Christmas Carol overlay sounds so awesome.
If you stick Afton around in the stretching room after Jack appears, keep looking up and your can STILL see the hanging ghost host
and in the ride the hatbox ghost is there in the attic.
Yeah, I always thought that was an interesting choice to leave the cupola visible when you're leaving the stretching room.

ive been to Disneyland 9 times..still have never been able to see the jack skellington version of this ride. maybe someday
One thing that almost everyone misses out on when covering Haunted Mansion Holiday is Sparky's tombstone in the pet cematary. For context, Sparky is the dog in the Tim Burton movie Frankenweenie that gets brought back to life by its owner, Victor Frankenstein. After the 2012 movie came out, not to be confused with the live action movie that Tim made and is based off of, Disney added Sparky's tombstone to the pet cemetery for Haunted Mansion holiday since Nightmare Before Christmas and Frankenweenie are both Tim Burton movies.
I'm eternally sad that unless some great luck comes my way I'll never get to experience this fantastic overlay featuring my favorite movie. great video though didn't mean to get glum there

Like cause of factors I've never actually rode the haunted mansion and have not been to the WDW in a loooooong time so I've had to watch video ride throughs of it to get my fill, and it makes me wish I could

I personally prefer the "Normal" Haunted Masion since I like the spookier atmosphere but the Holiday redesign is fine for a seasonal change.

Here’s an interesting story, the first time I rode the haunted mansion it was during the holidays, and brother told me about how it gets changed every year for the holidays. Then Disney Infinity 1.0 came out and the same skeleton I saw on the ride was a figure. From there I did more research and that is how I got into the nightmare before Christmas
I miss the holiday carols sung by Lock, Shock, and Barrel in the switchback portion of the queue.

I reconize Eleanor Audley she played Oliver Douglas's mother on Green Acres and was in a episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show in charge of the PTA in the episode ""Forty-Four Tickets"" where Rob forgets to get tickets for the PTA and friends for the show he work on.

Actually in 2001, Thurl Ravenscroft was actually still alive, but at that point he was too old to do new voices for the ride.
Small inaccuracy you mentioned: The Haunted Mansion would also be 19th century (1800s), as opposed to 18th Century (1700s). Though you’re correct that the Victorian setting of A Christmas Carol would not fit with the Antebellum aesthetic of the mansion. Still a superb video, regardless of my nitpick.
I honestly like the ride better with the nightmare before Christmas overlay. I wouldn’t mind the haunted mansion being nightmare before Christmas themed year round lol

We almost had a Charles Dickens overlay?!? That would have been my #1 favorite obsession, wrapped around my #3 favorite obsession!
Haunted Mansion Holiday has been one of my absolute favorite attractions ever since I was a little kid. And The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my absolute favorites because I love Jack Skellington and his dog Zero. I have so many different collections of Jack and Zero merchandise. The attraction always makes my birthday very special because my birthday is in October!!
Jack's face on the ceiling scared me so much, it put me off riding the ride until I was older.

Well what would they do? I don't think that pirates would really celebrate Halloween and I guess you could put some animatronics in Halloween costumes on Splash but that wouldn't make any sense because it would have nothing to do with the story. Maybe you could put some small decorations on some more neutral non-storytelling attractions like Dumbo, Casey Jr. etc. and put some Halloween costumes on Dumbo or put up some decoration on the towns of Storybook Village and on some of the plain grass and say that everybody is celebrating Halloween in Storybook Land!
Well I think they could do something like a ichobod crane thing for splash mountain. Idea you look at Disney’s movie. I think it would look cool.
Pirates could have Davy Jones' or Salazar's crew in the ride for Halloween.
With splash mountain they could just make the whole thing look more like fall with red leaves on all the trees and pumpkin vines on the ground and give some of the animals costumes. With pirates they could replace some of the pirates with the undead ones from the movies, thought that would probably be too expensive
That last time is saw The Haunted Mansion Holiday was back in 2005 with my Mom and I going there for my 5th Birthday :).

Fun fact: The stretching room portraits aren’t actually replaced, the holiday portraits were just put over them.

I've always thought it would be cool for the Magic Kingdom to have a seasonal overlay, but with Gravity Falls. It wouldn't be that much of a shift for the Haunted Mansion and the show I think would hit right in with the theme of the ride. you could even have Bill Cipher take over the Ghost Host role for the season and then got back to business as usual after a few months

I remember going in the holiday mansion when I was really little. When I was in the stretching room I was friken scared that I cover my ears and eyes and I would try to look up to see Jack but I was still scared lol. But I got over it when I got in the actual ride I think. Sadly for me I didn't go back to the holiday mansion just only the original when growing up maybe one day I'll ride the holiday mansion again

I experienced Haunted Mansion Holiday for the first time this year, and I loved it! Though I wonder what it would have looked like if the Haunted Mansion did something like a Krampus theme rather than Nightmare Before Christmas (though I love that version)
I hope the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay will still be at Disneyland Park in California for generations to come.
And it always will be no matter what.

I love HMH! My favorite is the pumpkin snow hill and ice angels 🎃 another change is that Tim Burton’s Mickey Mouse replaces the raven in the conservatory, seance, and graveyard (backward fall) scenes.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has yet to receive a franchise of theatrical sequels. It’s really overdue for a sequel, but the video game on XBOX and PS2 entitled The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, which is a video game sequel to the film. They are not retelling the story of the film as a video game.

I agree Prior to 2013 5:53 Jack’s face would a appear on scrim and say “happy holiday” everyone”behind the where the ghost host this is often seen on archived footage from 2001-2013 ride videos example is 2001 by the user Disneyguycom where it’s distorted by screams in two minutes in thirty eight seconds into ride archive footage that’s one of many examples from 2001-2013 era
I was there 2 weeks ago. The line took over 45 minutes and I only went on it once. It's one of my favorites though 😄

Albeit...I felt such great sadness to hear it was once considered for Disney World, and I would have gotten to actually experience this if not for some dumb Disney World officials...I guess that's why we didn't get any overlays for years, and why the ones we do have now suck so much...(I understand why they said no tbh...but that doesn't make it sting any less...).
