Quick correction about the piano effect at 9:24. The effect of the ghost's shadow on the floor actually _has been_ at the Magic Kingdom since opening day. So, apologies for that.
Most of the pre-2007 HM ride-through's I looked at for confirmation were so dark you just couldn't tell, and the one with clear enough lighting must've been from when the effect wasn't working properly...

The shadow ghost with the piano were added to the attic in the '95 renovation. Which explains why I reneger it as always having been there. That was probably the first visit I can actively remember bits and pieces from (from an age standpoint)

I’m so beyond excited that they’re restoring Vincent Price’s original narration since it was one of his final media projects, and that footage of him in the recording booth and the sound engineer saying “aw jeeze!” at his famous laugh was absolutely precious.
Agree! That made me thrilled to know that the original english narration is going to be put back into the attraction.
I'm so jealous that France gets the Vincent Price narrator. He is my favorite actor of all time and I love his voice.

The story also draws inspiration from the Phantom of the Opera in a lot of ways, and it’s even reflected in the score. The scene with Melanie as an old woman still in her wedding dress is taken from Great Expectations, and even the ballroom scene is reminiscent of a scene from John Webster’s the Duchess of Malfi, but that one’s a bit more of a stretch

Vincent Price is such iconic actor in the horror genre. Did you all know that he even did that narration in Michael Jackson's music video, "Thriller"?

Imagineers have chosen Vincent Price for Phantom Manor after listening MK's Thriller. During the test state of the ride, they put Vincent Price's laugh from Thriller over Phantom's animatronic. Then they really knew, he was the perfect voice for the ride.
Danny Elfman wrote the music for Mystic Manor in China and he even sings for the singing busts in English and the ride is in Mandarin and Cantonese as well

I honestly think Phantom Manor is great but I never associated it with The Haunted Mansion. It was always just a separate entity altogether for me! Still gorgeous but so tragic whereas the original Mansion you can sort of cast off your worries at the end and have fun, in the Manor you just leave feeling heartbroken and sad for the bride!

It would be interesting to do a history of the development of Ariel’s ride. I remember a virtual ride on the special edition anniversary of little mermaid. Also stuff like her hair changing from the ice cream hair to what’s there now.
The Mayor of Phantom Canyon uses a mold of the Dreamfinder animatronic from the original Journey into Imagination with Figment at Epcot.
Been visiting Disneyland Paris since I was a kid. Been 15+ times, hold such a special place in my heart.
I'm very excited to see the updates - especially for the story updates. Even though the official story says that the Phantom is supposed to be Henry Ravenswood, there are a lot of contradictions to that and, in general there's some confusion over his identity. But, according to the Imagineers, they'll finally reveal who he is once and for all. I'm looking forward to finally put it to rest, lol.

I don't think there's much to say about the Tokyo version since it's really just the Magic Kingdom's version without the 2007 additions.
Plot twist: Turns out the Phantom was a random nobody who was a rival to the groom and also in love with the bride and died from the earthquake.

I don’t think I would say it’s better because they are just so different tonally. The haunted mansion had more of a scary haunted house vibe while phantom manor has more of a tragic haunted house vibe
In which it's way more relatable to be called as "haunted house" on PM. Most haunted houses in the world are known for it's tragic background stories.
I love Phantom Manor, I went in sceptical that it could be that different to the Magic Kingdom incarnation but the whole thing feels a lot more gothic and... for want of a better word, European?
Gutted I missed Vincent price narration but it's a reason to go back one day!
Do a comparison video between the different versions of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! They've all got similar parts, but each version has something in it that makes them unique.

I mean seriously, starting from the base model in Disneyland, Florida is an almost identical mirror image but with a slightly longer track, and the flooded town of Tumbleweed before the second lift hill as opposed to Rainbow Ridge on the final brake run.
Then there's Tokyo, which is also a mirror image of California's, but with an altered ending for the boneyard.
And lastly Paris, which is based on the Florida ride, but set on an island in the Rivers of the Far West, with a washed out bridge before the second lift hill (which on the side of the ride facing Phantom Manor) and underwater tunnels to take trains to and from the station on the mainland.
What Disneyland Paris version unique is it plays a huge role on the storyline of Phantom Manor and Thunder Mesa (Frontierland).
Great job on the video! After experiencing Phantom Manor in 2000, we were struck with a sense of melancholy: the imagineers did an outstanding job on this attraction and its story line.
Unlike the Eddie Murphy feature film, I think this attraction's plot would make a far better movie. Who agrees?
Funny how you assume that most of your viewers probably won't be familiar with this version when as a French viewer, it's the very first attraction you review that I actually know. ^^

It’s a second empire. A popular style of architecture in the western part of the USA during the 1850s. If you ever watch the film Giant with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson... the house in the film is similar. Victorian homes are often always used in horror films because the Victorians sort of had a macabre fascination with death and the afterlife. The houses were ornate and elaborate in that time.

From what i've read it's inspired by the 3rd Ward School in Virginia City, but alot of people say it looks like the Pyscho house!

At first Vincent Price picture I was like "well.. it's a character that could be played by him".... I didn't know that was among his last works... so when he appeared in the boot... well I was near moving... I couldn't even hear the words... the soundtrack of Edward Scissorhands was in my mind and a deep sadness entangled me.
It's actor like him that I'm missin' today...

The shadow of the pianist has existed in Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion since it opened.
(Although, I wish they would redo it as a rotoscoped or hand-drawn animation instead of the cheap and unconvincing cutout and spotlight.)

I know you talked about the movie for "Haunted Mansion", but I was wondering if you could do a video for the "Tower of Terror" movie. It's a childhood tradition to watch it every Halloween with my Dad, and while it might not be a masterpiece, I think it's a good movie, especially for how low-budget it was. I was curious about what information you might be able to dig up.
Low-budget enough that they actually used the Florida ride for exteriors....

The happy haunts took over the Park for Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos
It's so sad that Phantom Manor closed down for refurbishment in 2018 which is this year. I'm glad to hear that it's coming back in January 2019 which is next year. *clap* I haven't been to Disneyland Paris before, but I'm here to listen to the history of this dark ride. Living in Europe, this is one of the best dark rides I've ever been on, it might even be the best attraction in the entire park.

They really need to make this version of the ride into a film. I would say we need one on the Disneyland version, but...you know...that turned out wonderfully. This one could be the chance to be a fresh start. Still based on the same premise, but with a chance to do it differently, and much better.

7:40 Vincent Price’s narration is back in Phantom Manor and has been for quite some time. Also, Phantom Manor is the ONLY mansion/manor where you enter through the front door of the house.
I’ve always wanted to visit each and every version of The Haunted Mansion across the parks. As each having their own lore and story. Just wish that each interpretation would take into account the very culture in which the park resides. For instance the Paris park could’ve been an old 18th century chateau. The Tokyo edition an old Shogun style castle or Shiro. That would be really cool.

I want Disney to demolish the sunset showcase Theater to be a RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET trill ride using the same technology on Despicable Me Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios Hollywood and Florida the show Buliding will be connected to stage 17 because in show Buliding stage 17 is where the vehicles are gonna be for DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE

I personally don't think phantom manor is the best version of three ride due to its very dark atmosphere, when the origional idea for the ride is supposed to be a spooky, scary mix. But it overall is still an amazing ride and the backstory is one of the best!
It's horribly common for missing indigenous people (especially women) to either be found deceased, or never found at all in Canada. It's especially sad, given that she had disability issues. There really needs to be a massive change in the way that these cases get handled, because they're so often mishandled by law enforcement

Besides the phantom piano player, I took one of the backstage tours and the guide told us that the pepper's ghost skulls floating out of the pipe organ in the ballroom were added in the big revamp in the 00's. Not true- they've also been there since opening day.
Waw I did not know this, I'm from Belgium and this is the only Disney park I ever visited, and so the only Haunted House , It's so good! But I never knew it was so different.... thank you :)

In every instance of the Haunted Mansion/Phantom Manor, the ride is basically located in Frontierland and part of the Frontierland story (I’ll get to Tokyo and Hong Kong). New Orleans Square is a sub-area of Frontierland, and Liberty Square is what starts Frontierland off. Neither New Orleans Square nor Liberty Square exist, and exist where they do randomly. They are completely thematically connected to the American Frontier/Westward Expansion story of America. In Disneyland, the town buildings of Frontierland are meant to echo St. Louis, and when you board the Riverboat, it is as if you are traveling down the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans. In Tokyo and Hong Kong, the Mansions are not in Frontierland, but the other thing about the Mansions/Manors is that they all, each and every one of them, overlook the Rivers of America/Rivers of the Far West/Rivers of Adventure. When the Imagineers placed the Haunted Mansion in Tokyo, notice where the placed it? On the extreme far left of Fantasyland, as close to the Rivers of America as possible, and Mystic Manor was placed where it was, by the Imagineers, so it could sit atop a hill overlooking the Rivers of Adventure in Hong Kong Disneyland’s Adventureland. Each mansion/manor is placed where it is purposely to maintain a common thread of placement in some way, in each park.
This is one of my fav,.. And I find it always fun that its as old as me.
I love Disneyland Paris and first went on opening and been many times since. I don't remember the crystal ball part but do remember pretty much everything else but what I do remember is how much I liked how the manor looked compared to the one in Florida, feels more like a haunted mansion!

As someone who has rode the original mansion in California, I will say it's not perfect and it was a mix of various ideas, as told by various Disney staff/imaginers who have been apart of the ride. The problem was that after Walt died, they didn't know what direction to go which lead to what we have. A mix. It makes me wonder how it would have been even if they didn't go that route. Anyway, regarding the Manor, I think the manor has the most unique way in telling its own story, but still paying tribute to the ones before. It really has it's own charm and I sort of wish every mansion/manor started doing their own unique telling. However, I guess you gotta go with what's popular.

I remember reading that the items in the Gazebo originally moved as if to mimic Poltergeist movement but later on, they stopped.
Next to Morgan Freeman, Vincent Price has one of the most instantly recognizable voices of all time. I'm glad that it will live on at Disney.

I rode it in 92, 93, 94.. I was.. like 8, 9 and almost 10.. I kept my eyes closed then.. and moved back to the US in 94 and I regret being so scared as a child :( I wish I could go back and experience it now

i have been on the phantom manor ride though the thing that scared me was not the phantom but the dog that looks like its about to leap at you. oh and the portraits that were borrowed from haunted mansion.

care to do a video on visionland in (well near but still) Birmingham Alabama? I recall as a kid that they had this really cool dinasaur walk through that they just let rot to nothing, and the management of that Park has been an embarrassment to the state, which took control of it for a period of time. afaik it's mostly a water park these days

A true shame IMHO that you consider the original incarnations of the Haunted Mansion to be a 'hodge podge of ideas' when the concept was actually so much more original, ambiguous and downright brilliant...a retirement home for ghosts, all with their own stories,...

The original version is a kind of anthology of ghost stories; a bunch of different ones all thrown together in one big smorghostbord. Phantom Manor has a single, cohesive story that weaves itself throughout the entire ride.
YMMV as to which one's better, but I like the stronger narrative of Phantom Manor.
Thank you! I found that slightly offensive. I never understood why people ragged on it for having no set story when it’s purpose was clearly stated. Had Phantom Manor’s generic story not existed I don’t think this feedback would even be a thing. I mean, Pirates is much more of a hodgepodge and yet no one rags on it.
I mean in all fairness it is a hodge podge of ideas, they just covered it up with the retirement home for ghosts excuse. But anyway it worked out!
Karstens Creations I prefer the original haunted mansion as well but this guy is allowed to like Phantom Manor, and it’s still a great ride regardless of preference.

why not? they were in a graveyard in the original. They still are in a graveyard here but UNDER it. This is because of the earthquake from the storyline of Phantom Manor!
The Singing Busts are iconic, so it'd be wrong to omit them. (Just like how this video points out that Madame Leota's presence doesn't really make sense within the Paris storyline)
It's probably one of three reasons: they fell down there during the Earthquake, we're already shifting into Phantom Canyon at that point, or it's too iconic not to have. It is a bit weird to have them in that specific spot but maybe the refurb will move the busts to a more appropriate place. Maybe flying around in seance scene doing some acapella? That would be at least a unique placement for them.
@@FantasmicDragon1 I admit the only thing that is put out of context by their location in PM is the song. Singing Grim Grinning ghosts in that skeleton lounge is weird, since....there no ghosts there. Only corpses. You know the seance circle would be not only unique for them to be but also make more sense. I mean they sing that song and right after we enter the ballroom which is LOADED with ghosts! On the other hand, they take over Leota's spotlight and this might result in 5 iconic characters fighting for attention, resulting in a cluttered scene.
You could also put the busts in Phantom Canyon itself! There are ghosts there, between the zombie townfolk. It makes more sense than the skeleton lounge.
I doubt they would make big changes in PM, besides just cleaning the place up and fixing the animatronics and scenery. I mean that's the result of last refurb, the hellhound just appeared and disappeared constantly. I hate to backlash Disneyland Paris or anything but from what I've observed they really dont maintain their existing rides very well. Ive been there several times in a few years and évery single time I visited PM there was at least 1 animatronic, absent or not working or 1 effect malfunctioning.
PM deserves better than that and i do look forward to the new refurb...but can't help but feel a lill bit cynical.

Out of all the Manson's I have been on Phantom Manor is the best I have been on!!! ... Saying that the only other on I have been on is the one in LA and That was over New Years so It still has the Xmas Stuff in it XD
