      Isn't this 6th century Theodroa, the actress/prostitute and later Emperor Justinian's wife?
      Wasn't Belisarios from later days? Theodora's crown certainly resembles that of Theodora's mosaic in Ravenna. There have been many Theodorae so I'm not sure

    • @danthalios
      @danthalios ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@thickfingersw.1730 Belisarius was contemporaneous with Justinian and Theodora, and his generalship was one of the main reasons that Byzantium (re)conquered Rome and held it until the 8th century. The quote above (made as a joke, obviously) references an event where Theodora ordered him to depose and exile Pope Silverius to Palmarola in 537.

      Well, the vast majority of Byzantine/Eastern Roman history was it yelling at everyone that it was the Roman Empire (which it was), especially under Justinian, Theodora's husband, who dreamed to restore the city of Rome to the Empire...which is funny, because the Roman civilization (i.e. Augustus) is a playable entity, and the two civilizations will treat each other like any other civilization.

    • @senseofcedars
      @senseofcedars 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Many compare Byzantium with Ottomans in the comments, but the truth is, Byzantium at Theodora's time, the sixth century, would not just defend against the Turks, but push them back to wherever they came from.
    The only reason Ottomans won was that the crusaders (and lots of other smaller barbarian organizations) betrayed and ravaged Constantinopole, as well as sacking many other smaller cities. Even then, they struggled to take a city defended by 8000 men using a ten times larger army.

      the prussian I can't comment on that specifically because I'm not that familiar with German politics. But to say democratic socialism is responsible for Europe's ills is laughable. The mainstream "socialist" parties here moved right ages ago. They're socialist in name only, they're all centre-left neoliberals these days. We haven't had a voice for some time, although that seems to be changing, slowly but surely. As it stands, the only socialists in Europe with any degree of power are Podemos, Syriza (although the EU did a pretty good job of bludgeoning them into submission) and, for now, the Labour Party.

    To all those writing that Byzantine Empire = Greek Empire , you do realise that you basically repeat medieval western propaganda? :D
    "Byzantines" called themselves Romani and their state was formally called Roman Empire untill it's very end. In western europe it was often called Empire of the Greeks and it's rulers vere adressed as emperors of the Greeks in order to separate them from the prestige of the Roman Empire.

    • @gearfire123
      @gearfire123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least those "barbarians" weren't getting BTFO by the caliphate. Post 630 Byzantium was a joke. Even the other western nations could tell and decided to put the Byzantines out of their misery in the 4th crusade. Tell me, how does an "empire" (lol) fail so bad that the people on a mission partly to save them end up beating the shit out of them instead when they realize everyone would be better off without them?

    • @TheMoorgoth
      @TheMoorgoth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Gearfire Bro check your history again during the macedonian dynasty byzantine was once again pretty powerful, and the 4th Crusade was actually a shame, without it Byzantine would have probably recovered and would have survived much longer. It's also a shame because the crusaders attacked a christian city robbed, raped and killed many people, that's just a shame and tells you how much honor these crusaders had.

    • @gearfire123
      @gearfire123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Silver Fullbuster The 4th Crusade just proves what everyone should already know, that the Crusades were way more politically motivated than religiously motivated, just like any other war. If a force strong enough to depose Byzantium could be bought off like that from the inside, then it's just as much a fault of Byzantine politics as it is Crusader greed. The nations that took Byzantium out ended up becoming far more successful than them anyway, so it's pretty much just par for the course for empires.

    • @TheMoorgoth
      @TheMoorgoth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Gearfire "Far more successful", well you know that the Byzantine Empire was once part of the Roman Empire right? And they were way more successful, for a longer period of time than the Ottomans...

    • @gearfire123
      @gearfire123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silver Fullbuster A lot of places were once part of the Roman Empire. Sure, Byzantines called themselves Romans, but nobody else ever paid them any mind by a certain point. If we're looking at Byzantine achievements we should be looking at the empire from around 500-1453. Not saying the Ottomans were any better, but being better than the dying man of Europe is not an achievement. The Byzantines were a remnant of an older era that died out like all remnants eventually do. It wasn't some grand exceptional tragedy. It was Medieval life and politics, and the Byzantines ended up becoming the whipping boy. It's happened numerous times to numerous peoples.

      ***** The thing is, during most Middle Ages, Byzantines were considered as ancient and noble people with advanced laws and army tactics (it became less and less true with time). That's why I think it is like High Elves : They are few representents of an ancient powerful and advanced empire (Roman Empire). I don't have clues for the three civilizations you quoted, I think Carthage and Roman can be considered as extinct ancient civilizations (still during middle ages) and Spanish are protrayed as religious fanatics by their civ leader (Isabela the catholic, the woman who made the inquisition...)

    • @Ambarenya13
      @Ambarenya13 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      DarkAntem Well, in the Lord of the Rings, Byzantium is represented by Gondor. The similarities are too numerous to be mere coincidence: the surviving eastern half of a once-mighty kingdom, ruled from a huge city with impregnable layered defenses and the bastion that holds back great enemies in the East, located on a major waterway that divides the Eastern world of a great threat (Mordor = Turklands/Islamic Caliphate) from the West (Europe). There are so many minute details too, such as the ridiculous similarities between the real world Iron Gates (the ancient border of Byzantium along the Danube River, once guarded on two sides by statues of Roman Emperors) and the Argonath (the ancient border of Gondor along the Anduin, guarded on two sides by statues of Numenorean Kings). Tolkien drew a lot of his inspiration for Gondor from the Byzantines.
      I think it's the music that's making you think High Elves. Howard Shore's Elf Theme is definitely based on Byzantine musical styles. ;p

    • @DarkAntem
      @DarkAntem 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you didn't explicitly exclude LOTR. You only explicitly excluded Tamrielic High Elves. Per your previous comment, I was aware you weren't talking JUST about LOTR, but I felt the comment was interesting to consider for the discussion.

      Technically the Byzantines were mostly Greek, but they controlled a sizeable area around Serbia and are probably the closest you could get. They were also the capitol of the Orthodox Church. Everyone else one could associate with the serbs wasn't really orthodox and was usually an invading power (although the Venetians were more interested in trade when they pushed that way, and a buffer against the Turks).

      Actually I'll go a step further and call the Byzantines what they actually were. Romans. Despite being different then what we think of romans they follow roman law, customs, and even kept roman titles. And most importantly they thought of themselves as Romans. Not as Byzantines or Greeks. So in truth, perhaps they should be seen as Romans, even if they spoke Greek.
