I needed this lesson big time its interesting how a cochlear implant sounds. with my music setting on my cochlear i get enhanced digital sounds so I try to use my normal setting best as I can most of the time. That reminds me can you do a lesson for Ramones I want You Around for us begineers?
Just tried it. But the second i try i hit a note i modulate my hum to this note. Its really hard to switch from hum what you play to play what you hum.

The reason I like this lesson is that it reveals a major fundamental in ear training… If you ask 100 people to hmmm a note it is highly likely that they will pick one of the notes in the octave….which is perfectly ok. But here’s something interesting. About 90% of the time when asked to pick and hmm at random…most folks will hmmm the same note over and over again….and That is their ear tonic. That’s where their voice and hmm is grounded. So if you know where your hmmm tonic is most predominant or predictable, you can begin to expand your ear and voice across the fretboard….
Wow man. One of the most comprehensive methods on ear training ive ever read, seen, or heard. In only 5 minutes of the video, I learned enough to take with me to my guitar to start mapping out the notes for my songs. Dude, you're a life saver.
THIS FN' WORKS! ! I was all over the fretboard like he said. Wasting time trying to figure out the melody while getting frustrated. That's until I used the one string at a time method. Within a half hour of using this method I was able to play 7 to 8 songs on each of the 6 strings one at a time, until muscle memory took over. Now I'm able play all over the fretboard, even past the 12th fret. I'm far from being great at it but good enough to know about what close proximity my hands should be at on any given string and fret based on the pitch of the melody. Using this method has me motivated and looking forward to practice..

I want to make sure I show this video to the kids I play guitar with, because I've shown them this method. I am not an expert or a teacher, it just made sense to hum and find the note. I also tell them to use their finger in the air on an imaginary line, and move their finger up or down depending on what the note is they are humming. Having a visual sometimes helps. Keep making these helpful videos. Myself and my kids find them very useful. Thanks.

I've been searching for ear training tutorials since I've heard that learning songs with tabs is a bad habit and I've seen most of them recommend that humming thing but I just don't get it. The fact that my voice's tone is different than guitar's makes it impossible to tell if it's higher or lower or the same. I know this would obviously be hard but I have no idea if the note that I found is the correct one so I don't know if I'm doing it right.
The "hum both notes" method doesn't really help me since I don't know if the note I'm humming matches the note I'm playing on my guitar either
Same man... I just can't hum the notes. I find it easier to memorize some common songs for each interval. That may help you too.
Try the opposite. Play a random note first, then hum it.
I had the same issue. Kept doing it. And all of a sudden it clicked. You’ll know when it is right.

I find it really useful. I have tried it after struggling for years, I have a good ear for piano but somehow it was difficult on guitar. The previous two days I practiced for hours and finally I enjoy practicing it motivates me so much. Sometimes I have to search for the string but I think it will be helpful in the long-run especially later on finding some base for chords. Thank you soo much for I don't have to struggle for hours.

excellent. first time i ever heard anyone acknowledge that there are some people who can't just naturally tell if a note is higher or lower. (actually there is a line in a song in A Chorus Line in which the actress says "I really couldn't hear which note was lower or was higher" and that line always gets a laugh. but living it is no joke. thanks for offering a solution!

When I hum or sing, what I hear is different to what other people hear. So, I think I have a match on the fret board but I actually don't. I can get my voice to match the note if I record myself singing along with the guitar. I play it back and think, nope I have to go higher. After a few tries I get a match and them remember how to sing that song. Even though it sounds wrong in my ear (it sounds right on the recording). Anybody else have this?
Reginaldesq I used to have this problem too. But ear training and singing more solved the problem. For me the solution was that i needed to get used to the feeling of singing in tune, even I though I was doing it right in the first place, I just wasnt. So sing more single notes and scales and be dead sure about the pitch. It will get better if you put in the work!:)
couple years i had just been using chords and tablature i nee to actually learn the stuff. think the 30 lessons will hopefully teach me the correct way to do the 'stuff' even if it means re-lerning the C chord
yeah im coming up on my first year of playing (almost 10 months in) and I’m really trying to better my ear now.. it just doesnt satisfy me to only know scales and chords in terms of theory and looking at song tutorials to learn...doesnt feel like I actually KNOW the guitar.

Great class, but how different is this from the Aural Skills thing used on the music schools? I know nothing about any of them.
MANY different exercises and methods, but it all comes down to practice, repetition and increasing ear challenges.

Find the first or last note of melody by humming technique as described in this video. That will help you figure out the key of song. Try playing chords of that key..
People who are unable to find key of song by ear, can try app called "BACKTRACKIT".. it analyzes and tells you the correct key of song. However, if you are doing ear training, use it as tool to check whether you are able to find correct key of song or not & try to find atleast key of one song perday on our own, then compare it on backtrackit app. Finding melody notes or chords is quite easy once you know the right key of song. I hope it helps someone ! Good luck ☺️

Look I’m not an expert, I’ve barely been playing a year, but I’ve found a great way to train your ear is to memorise a riff or riffs that include each note by heart, then memorise those notes, I’ve found if I hum it in my head I can easily find the note I’m hearing.

Sounds to me like when you were supposed demonstrate the 'lack of method' approach, you nailed the correct note the very first time you placed your finger on the fretboard, before fubbing it up... am I right? :-)

I'm not exactly sure what you mean Dhushor, but that is a skill that takes practice
I actually mean that how can i cover a song accurately by chord progression which song is new to me, but by listening by my ear i can realize that sound progression and give rhythm instantly with that song by actual chord which can be merged with that song accurately or very much near or slimier?
1) the song is new to me
2) I listen it carefully by my ear
3) My hand goes instantly some of chords which is needed for it
4) And for this there maybe a chord sound progression feelings in my mind, which actually help me to make chord instantly. Plz make a video on this sense of chord in sequence development

How come you are singing perfect notes? Is that easy? Or does it require perfect pitch? I will try but I am pretty sure 'my' note will unfortunately fall in between two actual guitar notes.
You don't have to hit it perfectly. You'll get better with practice

Not trying to dis u bro but when ur finding the note on the high e string 9th fret that is a C# not a F#! Unless of course ur in another tuning other than 440! But keep up the lessons, I have learned lot from them! Thanks

If you've heard the phase "binary search" before, you will know jump around on the fret board to look for the note is not wasting time. It will save half of the time actually if you do it right.
Binary search is not jumping around the fretboard however. It's a whole method and yes, if your ear is trained enough, one can do this. I do this, but don't ever refer to it as binary search.
And if you follow these wise words and practice lots, you will be extremely successful and then you can treat yourself with a fantastic Fender Stratocaster like the one in the video! (Before that it is a waist, especially if your playing skills are such low level as mine)

small mistake in video, 9th fret on 1st string is C#, not F#. (7:52 in the video) But it's irrelevant... just you confused me for a second. I was looking at those double dots being E, and thinking a minor third lower.
