Absolutely amazing! I'm old, and I remember being haunted by this song was as a kid. The fact that younger people recognize Lightfoot's legacy fills my soul. What a great cover!
I was a little kid when Lightfoot released this song, and it has haunted me like no other ever since. Nice cover, Lia. (Also, that's a really nice Barrister's bookcase.)
@fxm5715 I'm sure it did! I first heard this song in elementary school and it made a big impression. And thank you! It's from my mother in law. It's from the late 1800s and it's where I keep my oddities and rock collection.
From his Wikipedia page: The Mariners' Church in Detroit (the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral" mentioned in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald") honored Lightfoot the day after his death by ringing its bell a total of 30 times, 29 for each of the crewmen lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and the final time for Lightfoot himself. Additionally, the Split Rock Lighthouse, which overlooks Lake Superior in Minnesota, shone its light in honor of Lightfoot on May 3.
This is the first time I have heard/seen anyone do a cover of this fabulous, monumental ballad and you did a sensational, magnificent job. Always make it a point of listening to this song. Especially when it is the anniversary in November. Thank you for posting this.
Wonderful! As someone who grew up with tales of Ol' Fitz, I do enjoy this more "forward" cover! You're definitely conveying how lake Michigan and Superior are in the months to come. ❤
So good. Being from Duluth, Lake Superior has my utmost respect. And even though I'm younger, November 10th will always give me pause. Wonderful cover.
Dear Lia, congratulations, this is one of the best covers ever made. I have very strong memories of this song, since I was a child. It will be really great if you upload your tabs. Thank you
Wow! Thank you! All I'm doing is using a capo on the 3rd fret and playing Dsus2, Am, C, and G there. Occasionally on the break I'm adding my pinky onto the 5th fret of the second string while holding my Dsus2 but that's it!
This was recommended in my other account and I didn't even know the original song. Sorry, but the original couldn't be better than this. Congratulations. One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and I've been working with music since 2008. Got you a new sub. Extremely well done.
I grew up in Michigan and remembered when this happened. So sad. What a beautiful tribute. I've got goosebumps and could listen to your beautiful voice all day. Thanks for sharing!

Worthy cover! I remember when this song was the hit of two countries. I saw the man several times in breathtaking concert. We all miss you, Gord.

Very nice. Good phrasing and a very American folk music quality to it. A fitting tribute to Mr. Lightfoot.
