I grew up in the 70’s listening to this song…I’ll be honest and say that at first I was pissed that someone would speed up the song which, I at first found to be irreverent. After listening to the song in its entirety, I’m impressed…As someone commented below, the harmonica was more like a mournful bagpipe player giving respect to the 29 fallen crew. Good job, guys…You have a new fan.

He went hard from the start, but when he slowed it down and brought in the drums and bagpipes? And then finishes it soft and acoustic? JESUS.

I grew up on Gordon Lightfoot. So I went looking for covers og this, as a huge fan of the original, and this - this one is brilliant, has it own voice and still respects the original. The verse about all the Lakes and the funeral echoes the majesty of the original, the harmonica shrill at the end carries the haunting sadness of the original - the rest holds the grit of the men the song eulogizes. Brilliantly executed, and with soul.

  • @cwilliams7604

I think this one is going to be an encore from here on out, it's epic. Love the transition in the last quarter of the song with the drum and harmonica sounding almost like Scottish bagpipes, paying respects to the men lost. See you all again soon !

Absolutely fantastic. I lived on the U.P. for 10 years, and while I was there attending NMU as a history major I did an internship at the Marquette Maritime Museum, so I am very familiar with the story of the wreak. This song is by far the best cover I’ve heard, and its simplistic power and scene give it a qualifying lifeness that can only be experienced by facing into one of those November north winds that literally strikes with a crack out of nowhere.

I've listened to this song since it came out (I was yeee tall). I've lived no more than 15 miles from Mother Superior my entire life, and I don't fear her only because I've witnessed her shear🎉 power as well as her phenomenal beauty. Although I can honestly say this is the only time I've heard it that it didn't stop me in my tracks, tighten my throat and break me with tears, I will say it is the first remake I've listened to. Never wanted to hear an attempt. But, I heard Hugh was a singer so I looked up his music and saw this. As I said, it didn't hit me like Gordon's, but I smiled. And I send a thumbs up north From the UP. Great Job Headstones 😘

Just been thinking about your comment. Americans write stories that take place in other countries all the time. And those are American stories, even if they're not about Americans, because those stories are told from the point of view of someone outside the society, that particular American's point of view.
Same thing when Canadians write about things taking place in India or fabled Atlantis or the Great Lakes. Canadian story about an American, Atlantan, Indian event.
If it's an effective story, and people get drawn in, it belongs to all those readers..
