- The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a game set in Middle-earth where you adventure as either a Man, Dwarf or Elf in the north during the events of the Lord of the Rings. But how well does the game’s lore fit into the context of Middle-Earth? Here’s my examination on it! Man I don’t know how much I would pay for a LOTR game like the elder scrolls games, it would be magnificent.
The Elder Scrolls, the LotR and the ASOIAF universe are my 3 favorites

If that's what you're after, I highly recommend Lord of the Rings Online! I was hesitant to get into it because I'm not really an MMO person but honestly it blew me away with how faithful it is to the lore, how it lets you explore Middle-earth and the sheer vast amount of content there is. You can play for hundreds of hours without ever having to interact with another player, if that's not your thing. The microtransactions can be annoying and it doesn't quite give you the freedom that an Elder Scrolls game would (plenty of invisible walls and unclimbable mountains), but it's definitely the closest thing to an open-world Middle-earth currently in existence.

This game's story was really great. It brings in characters you care about and has some incredibly tense moments where you are terrified for their safety, and you genuinely care about protecting the people you meet. Nordinbad was easily my favourite place in the game, with a unique setting of being a lost hall of longbeards who lost contact with their other kin due to their isolation. Urgost was handled incredibly well. I like how they respect the power of dragons in Tolkien's world so much, and we resort to bargaining rather than fighting. Urgost not supporting Sauron just because he's evil also made him way more interesting to me. He doesn't like us at all, but doesn't outright hate the peoples of middle earth and is comfortable minding his own business, but at the same time we can tell he's a monster when he laughs about thousands of people dying due to Agandaur's attacks on the north.

Also can you do a lore review on the Battle for Middle Earth games. Only the Good Campaigns tho, I think we all know how the evil campaign is in no way canon.
The Angmar campaign is pseudo-canon. Most characters aren't canon but the events are for the most part. Such as the attack on Amon Hen, and the campaign the Witch King led across the north.

Evil campaigns are not canon but they pose interesting references sometimes. Like goblins hating hobbits and Isengard also wanting the Shire
I played the game after getting it for Christmas in 2011. I was blown away by how well they captured the likeness of the npc characters that were taken from the movies (i.e., Aragorn, Elrond, Frodo, etc.). As I progressed through the game, I was thrilled by the abundance of lore that I later discovered while re-reading the Hobbit, the LOTR, as well as the Appendices. I don’t care what the critics said about it, aside from the movie tie-ins and the Middle Earth Shadow games, this game is another one on my favorites for exploring Middle Earth. It’s practically the perfect game for LOTR book and movie fans alike!
I agree, the game was very nearly a great game. It’s a game for proper lotr fans. The game could have added a codex, longer campaign, more exploration.
@@chairmanzia3556 Yeah within that game there are many levels like Annúminas, sea of Rhûn, Pelargir and many more that are unplayable. I tried searching if these levels are playable but I found nothing.

I honestly think that War In The North is the second greatest Tolkien game (just below LOTRO). While it doesn't 100% follows Tolkien's rules and lore (especially in regards to his excellent use of Soft Magic which makes me be a bigger fan of that system then Hard Magic believe it or not), I still think it follows it to a point where it is not as frustrating to any of us hardcore lore fans unlike some other games (*cough* SOW and SOM *cough*). Overall, I really enjoyed it as well, and I would recommend it to other fans too!!! :)
@James Smith If you think that then that's fine. I think in terms of it's gameplay and mechanics with the Orc interactions the game is such a blast, but in terms of it being a game that is set in Tolkien's world and whether or not it follows the lore, it's one of the worst imo. But I do respect your opinion all the same! :)

While Shadow of Mordor takes a great deal more artistic licence than in War in the North, I would still argue it is a better game. Non-canon games are just fan-fiction, there is no need for fan-fiction to stick to the original lore.
@Nazbol Miner If you think that then that's completely fine. I love The Battle For Middle Earth as well, and it's definitely in my top 5 even though it doesn't follow Tolkien's lore and rules 100% ether. :)
@@Theo_Caro I guess you can indeed argue that it is an overall better game in it's graphics, gameplay and overall design (but then again you can't really blame TWITN because it was a game that came out 3 years before SOW making SOWs engine itself much better). But I do agree that we should probably just look at it as just Fan-Fiction, and to not be taken too seriously! :)

That being said, I was stunned how much lore was respected and cared for.
I loved this game! Although Tolkien does state the nature of magic to be convoluted, from your later video when you talked about Magic in Middle Earth. I quoted a quote from Gandalf when they try to enter Moria by opening the West Gate, that Gandalf at one time knew every spell in all the tongues of Men, Elves and Orcs. So I don't think it would be impossible for other beings to use magic, maybe not at the level of other races like Maiar, High Elves and/or Elves, but can still use magic. Also in some pages of the Hobbit and LOTR does say that Dwarves used spells to safeguard the Troll Gold from the Hobbit and to safeguard their strongholds by their secret doors. I would love for you to make a new video on the magic of Middle Earth, as there is more to it than what we have seen or read.
Not to mention that in case of black arts of sorcery and necromancy there is some precedent for people being able to learn it, for example we know that Black Numenoreans could learn sorcery and many were sorcerers, including Mouth of Sauron who "learned great sorcery" which also makes Agandaur as the main villain that much believable and suiting to the lore. We see examples of sorcery also done by Nazgul in books and creatures such as Barrow-wights.
I hope they remaster the game to ps4 & Xbox 1 I really loved this game
I really enjoyed this game as a coop experience and liked it a lot more then the shadow of... games! Not just because it fits good into the lore, even in some parts it has it own.

The developers having the literary rights makes so much sense as to why the game utilized Tolkien's Legendarium so well. They really nailed it.
I actually really like this game, probably one of the better recent Tolkien games. I especially enjoyed the co-op and the fact they did focus on some interesting lore bits within dialogue.
I extremely like your videos dude and its my only me-time and relief from getting stressed and yelled at by family when i get home, I have been absolutely obsessed with The Lord Of The Rings since i was like 4 and your videos just keep making it better, also I remember commenting on one of your videos and I said: "GOD BLESS ARNOR" - and you replied with: " Illuvitar bless arnor"- thanks for correcting me, also if you ask why i like Arnor so much is because it provides nostalgic feelings for me for some reason and plus how its in the North , its Ancient , and I just admire it so much i created an entire language and geographical area for it in the real world (not saying that Middle-Earth is not real) and my friends did the same for other factions in Middle-Earth as well. War in the North is probably one of the most lore friendly games set in Lotr world, despite it having mostly original plot and characters, it fits amazingly well with established canon (in fact it uses well the references of things said in book, for instance the sending out of scouts from Rivendell before fellowship departed, which gives the protagonists something to do in connection with actual canonic events :)). War in the North also has many elements that I would love to see in a proper open world RPG set in Middle-earth, also if this game was much longer, had more complex plot, less linear, had an open world to explore and would use actual events of the war in the norther lands like battles in Woodland Realm, battles in Dale and siege of Erebor, invasions on Lothlorien and orcs ravaging land of Beornings, then this could be hundred times better.

Even though it's many years since I've played the game it is one of my favourites, getting to immerse myself into the game was maybe the best things about getting to play it, thanks for making a video about it, and keep up the wonderful work, love your channel

Personally, one of the clever things about this game I liked was how your playable characters had with the NPCs. Like how Andriel was both a student of Elrond, close friends with his sons and daughter and how she helped to raise Aragorn when he was a child.
I absolutely love this game. I played through it multiple times with my sister on all difficulties. It has an option for couch coop (at least on Xbox360), and there's nothing better than couch coop and constant arguing about who stole who's kill.

it really could have used some more challenge maps and maybe a level where you got to ride horses and on the back of an eagle fighting a nazghul ... THAT would have been epic
When I first played this game I pretty much had only seen the movies. And I paid so little attention to the characters conversations that I didn't realize it took place during LOTR until we beat the end boss as frodo destroyed the ring lol

About the game: it is great. I've played most games from 21st century set in Tolkien's world, and surely this one is one the best. Like you said, learing about the lore in WitN gives a need to know more and more about legendarium, especially for a person who never read the books and mainly gather they knowledge from movies/games/wiki (like me :P).
I'd really like to see you make a video about Battle for Middle-Earth, all installments. That would be interesting, especially about the Rise of the Witch-King.

One of my favorite games, me and my wife would play this online with others, she played as andriel and I played as Eradin. I have everything maxed out with elf stones. The Lore behind it was quite interesting especially with Elronds sons assisting you here and there. I was a little disappointed when you couldn’t fight the dragon 🐉, but all in all I think this is my favorite middle earth game. Thanks for the video, not many people give this game credit nor talk about it. 😁👍
I loved this game and the Battles for Middle-Earth games. They're very very good on their own, but these definitely pushed me into Tolkien's Lore-world so much more. The relativity to the movies and the things I only wondered about until I got to play them. Can't wait until they remaster/remake them.

Third Age was richly atmospheric with beautiful scenery, exciting progression and overlapping with the 'real fellowship', while the weapons and armour were so authentic and OUTSTANDINGLY well described in exquisite detail. I learned a lot about medieval armour, all the pieces and weapons and the items' names; it was a veritable dictionary of weapons and armour. Fantastic!
The music though not composed for the game itself, but Howard's own score from the films, was nonetheless VERY well syncopated to the nature and level of activity onscreen, whether it was loud combat, or deep reflective quieter moments, it was beautifully orchestrated correctly. We got to hear the maximum amount of Shore's gorgeous scores too including all the music from 'The Complete Works', but even better as we have Eleghost stalking through Eregion or Haddie beholding the great works of his kin at Moria. So wonderful - I was right there!!
It was all spellbinding and completely immersive.
My only criticism was the same as that of the War in the North, that the doling out of weapons and armour was very haphazard and ill-timed, with very poor weapons / armour, amulets and pendants being released very long after the discovery of far superior items.
Also undersights like water 'resistant' elfstones and armour being released in Moria (a place of fire) then becoming nearly redundant by the time your party is subjected to water spirit attacks far, far later at Osgiliath.
Also, Morwen is granted an ability to learn 'Nimble crafting', yet by the time she joins our group, we could have two or three characters who have mastered that skill, making her advantage a lot less significant and almost redundant.
Overall though, I am personally deeply indebted to the makers and producers AND music composers of these two wonderfully immersive games, as well as BFME2.
I haven't gone near 'Shadow' nor will I in the future.
Does the game show stuff that was in the War in the North in the book? Such as the invasions of Lothlorien and Mirkwood and the Siege od Erebor?

Remember playing lord of the rings game that followed along with the stories and playing every level as each character from Gimli to Gandalf. Great fun. It was hours of fun beating the watcher in the water, Uruk hai, etc. such a great game.
I like playing this game, especially with a couple of people that I know of and I had such fond memories of playing War in the North with one or two players and a few complications at the time. I usually play as the Elf; Andriel while my companions play the other two characters. Also I got that game for Christmas long time ago. :) Good times. :)

Fun trivia fact: the voice of Gandalf in war in the North also played magneto in wolverine and the x-men cartoon. Which is clever cus of course Ian played Gandalf and magneto in the live actions
This game is the first game I played on my PC that I got in 2012. I still love this game after all this time!
This was one of the more overlooked licensed games, in no small part because it was published when the licensing rights were transitioning from one publisher to the next. Aside from your Lore review, from the footage and other reviews I've seen online, this is actually one of the licensed games I'd bother to buy and play. :-) The devs got adequately creative, respecting the legendarium, but unafraid to use the timeline to tell their own sidestory. That, and the fact that this game wasn't yet another rehash of the War of the Ring, is something I can respect. They even bothered to have voice actors for the Great Eagles, which I find really nice.
This game is very underrated. I reviewed it on my gaming channel.
I LOVE this game. Snowblind was my favorite game studio, and I think War in the North is crazy fun.

I know you've done a video on the dragons but could you do a video on Smaug specifically? Like a theory on if he lived or got the ring or just a video about is story or something? He's my favorite Tolkein character actually.
If you do this series anymore, you should totally look at "The Third Age" back on the XBox and Gamecube. I remember the game itself being fun, but I don't know the lore enough to know if it fits or just wrecked everything.

@men of the West : where did the Goblins and orcs in Moria come from? Dol Guldur (how did they Bypass Lorien to get there?) or did they tunnel in from the Goblin Town? Reason i ask is game related. just finished the Epic Story line in Moria LOTRO and end boss is a necromancing Orc something from Dol Guldur with a Portal similar to Stargate. suppose that part of the Story is also a bit of fan-fiction poetic Licence.
War In The North is one of my favorite games of all time. I've played through it an embarrassing number of times and I always hated that it got such bad reviews. It makes me so happy to see that other people liked it too. Thanks for the awesome video.
This game can be more canon and respects Tolkiens work more than Shafow of War and Shadow of Mordor
My brother and I grinded that game for days on end, sometimes. It's part of the reason why I have a strong affinity towards the dwarves of Middle Earth
Literally just finished this game with a mate. It was really amazing. Loved it. I'd easily recommend it, and definitely recommend doing co-op.
I remember this game being great fun with the boys and I wish I could play this again in a remastered fashion!

Would you be interested in producing a video about the return of the Longbeards to Erebor? Would Roäc have sent messengers to the Blue Mountains? Might Thorin's folk have left for the East almost immediately? What route would they have likely chosen (perhaps through the Gap of Rohan and around southern Mirkwood)? How long might it have taken them to reach the Lonely Mountain?
We just started playing this with my Mrs, only thing wrong with this game is the vertical split screen.

This may be the best licensed LOTR game I have ever played. And agree with you said about this game. Im a huge LOTR fan, read the books the similarion and very Into to the lore of middle earth. And I’ll echo what you have said and still stand by this to this day, this is a great bridge for people.
I’ve actually replayed this game and wish the rings of power did something war in the north did. While it’s not part of the official canon. It’s canon compatible. It has all the Tolkien themes and doesn’t disrespect his work, regarding magic where it’s done in this game as a gameplay mechanic, in fact there’s a great attention to detail of the game when you talk to characters that people behind making this game understood and really did their research. Example ?

Celebrían was an Elf-lady of Lothlórien, the daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel. As the wife of Elrond, she was also known as Lady of Rivendell. She was the mother of Arwen and the twins Elrohir and Elladan. In war in north you meet the twins and you can talk to them about their mother. They will tell you what happened to her, that she was then tormented by Orcs and received a poisoned wound. Her sons arrived much later to rescue her, and Elrond healed her wounds, but Celebrían was never fully-healed in mind and spirit. Horrified and haunted by the memories of her torture, she no longer desired to remain in Middle-earth, and sailed west the next year.
This attention to detail I love respect and is optional dialogue in the game.
Hey its been a while so you may not remember me but I tweeted about could sauron use the dwafen rings he was collecting to boost his power while he's weak I always wonder why in the movies he was looking for the other rings of power thank you for your time and also if sauron had more time would he regain all his strength without the ring and if he got it back would he be twice as strong in that case? keep it up :)

Hey I have some questions reguarding lord of the rings online, for example do you have to buy all of the dlcs to play the content?
So if you take requests for this series, I think it would be awesome to look into Games Workshop’s Middle Earth (formerly The Hobbit, formerly the Lord of The Rings) Strategy Battle game. They made a number of interesting additions to the lore and fleshed out areas the films never really addressed, such as the Haradrim, Far Harad and the Variags of Khand. They also created very lore friendly personalities for the RingWraiths. Some of it is really really good, and some of it I could do without. But it’s definitely worth looking into for this series if you are looking for a project in the future!

A great game, one that my brothers and I played through dozens of times.
The only thing is the game suffered a little as the developers were pulled off to another project and the end feels unfinished as the final level is quite empty.

It is one of my favorite games. I realy love many details, shown in the game. For example, guy who wants to married, in Bree, is mentioned in the books. And I still Hope of canonic Nordinbad.
I think Tolkien hints at the ability of Orcs to use spells in the Lord of the Rings. And if I recall correctly, some of the additional writings point to this as well.
*Underrated* Game !
I enjoyed playing the War in the North -- it was my first game for the PS3, but it suffered from a lot of bugs and a rushed release because Warner Brothers bought Snowblind and then pushed the game out the door before it was ready, and then effectively stopped work on bug fixes (there was one patch, but it was rather feeble) and DLC. The game tried hard to fit within Tolkien's work (unlike the abysmal Shadow of Mordor), although magic was obviously boosted for game play.

I wonder if you’ll do a podcast with Arachîr Galudirithon, the lead developer of the divide and conquer submod of Third Age Total War.
As a tolkien fan, I couldn't even touch Shadow of Mordor, but I really enjoyed this game (especially since it can be played multiplayer). Shame we don't get more lotr games, there are so many different events you can cover with games, across different ages.

Well , I think Agandaûr was inspired by Mouth of Sauron, as a black Númenórean, he could use magic, as it is written in the book. I liked the game and as you mentioned I would gladly see main characters backstories.
I don't know when to play it, because I am very busy, but maybe it a year or two!

I remember playing the LOTR game that followed the story lines and you could play as Gimli to Gandalf, truly a great game. I so agree, not enough hours in a day to become immersed in a good game anymore. Other than being busy, hope all is well in your corner of Middle Earth, Mellon!

This game actually respecting Tolkien's world was refreshing beyond words after playing Shadow of Mordor. While that game was fun, it didn't care at all about making an actual Middle-earth game. War in the North though, felt like it actually could have happened, and it was phenomenal for it. My biggest gripe with the game was that it was a bit short, and that you could never fight Urgost.
I played this game some years ago, when it was pretty new. My brother and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I really wish Snowblind was still around so there would be a chance of it being backwards compatible on Xbox One.
YEEESSS!!! I honestly loved this game; it was corny, campy dialogue, simple combat mechanics, and a one track mission gameplay...but man any game or book or video that can seemlessly transport me to middle earth is a phenomenal piece of work in my mind. Also loved how it consistently stayed in line with wat happens in the books, unlike other games *cough cough* (shadow of Mordor🙄). Wen I wasn’t playing battle for middle earth II or rereading the books I was playing this game; so many hours well spent lol
I can understand the issue with the use of magic in the game (even tho I played as Andriel more than the others ha) but I think it was done to make the players more diverse and certain enemies more challenging than with just a sword and shield. But wat I love most about this game is its title: “war in the north”, which indicates that, while the war was raging in the stories that we know it was also happening in places that we don’t know which made me as a fan want to go back and investigate wat actually happened in the north and other places in middle earth. I’d b playing it right now if my ps3 was still alive lol
