I loved how IV started you off playing a war criminal whose conscience is the only one punishing him for the massacre he just carried out. Best opening of the entire series.
Well, crime requires law, and if the king is the law, and the king don't care, then it wasn't a crime.
That being said, IV was totally having the MC slaughter innocents unprovoked as a means of shock value and character establishment, and it worked.

Even more amazing story telling when Cecil loses everyone and washes on shore to the very town he sent out said assignment. The welcome he gets from the locals as well as the elder made it more amazing. You want Cecil to redeem himself and that's his chance. I play this game annually b/c I absolutely love this game. I used to say vii was my favorite, then I said vi was, but I always end up going back to iv. So much greatness in this game.

As someone who has recently been thinking a lot about 4 vs 5 vs 6 (for a Fake Sequelitis which likely won't happen tbh) it is pretty surprising how much I had forgotten about this game. Especially all the fake-outs! I do feel like FF4 was able to get away with big character moments like that because of its linearity though, since it forced those characters to be in the party at a specific time, so those moments could contribute to the overarching story, rather than FF6 which, despite how much I love it, really had to relegate most of those big character moments to side quests that didn't affect the main story all that much. FF5 had it easy since there were only 4 (or 5) characters, but 5 probably has the best gameplay of the entire series.
4 definitely has the best boss theme! I feel like 4's boss theme actually tells kind of a "story" all on its own. It starts out as just pure stress, clashing of chords from one end to the other with fatigue setting in as the chords slowly descend, only for it all to disappear except for the drums and bass, a moment when both parties are clearly stopping to regain their composure. The best part is just after that though, when the strings kick back in. You can really feel the desperation in this section. You thought the moment of rest would help, but maybe it didn't, and the reality of your imminent injuries starts to set in, further exacerbated by how much the game really makes you care about its characters. Of course in the end, you hear the chords gradually start to ascend and just for that moment, victory really feels within your grasp. Maybe it comes, maybe it doesn't, but either way, the transition back to stress city is only a few seconds away. As much as I love 6's boss theme, I do kinda feel like that one was a little too heavy on the "stress" side of things. Like it was basically all stress all the time and didn't really tell a "story" the way that 4's did. Of course that's all subjective.
This is why I don't think I'll end up making that video. 'Cause that last paragraph alone would probably be a half a day of editing right there!

Rydia *is* the best. She has one of the best return moments ever. Really understated moment when she saves Cecil from Golbez, and as soon as she steps up to the party line the music instantly changes from Golbez's theme to the fiend battle music.

I think the DS remake really made this game special for me. The voice acting, added dialogue, and it also being the first FF game I really played through without stopping halfway through made all the difference. After watching this video, I can tell I wouldn't have felt the same way had I played another version.

actually all that burnt stuff at the bottom is usually animal fat or fond that you would scrape off to help flavor sauces or stews, although i am concerned for his health since youre not supposed to cook anything with the same pan you use to cook chicken
In my experience, ceramic pans just...do that. I really don't like them. I highly prefer hard anodized pans.
I have a pan like that. I suspect it's because of metal utensils scratching the bottom. I take better care of the others now; only plastic and wood.
Frying is extremely unhealthy so it really doesn't matter what the pan looks like. The food is being jacked either way.

I know I'm coming to this very late, but I've only recently discovered you Jared.
This is my absolute favorite FF game. Where 6 is the one that is THAT game for you, the one who helped shape your life, this is THAT one for me. Cecil's story, despite where the development ends, is what pushed me to overcome the problems I had in my life at the time. Granted, I was 10 when I played it, but it was really impactful for me.
While as an adult, I agree with your critical appraisal of this game, as a child it blew my mind. The music is fantastic, though the story elements are goofy. The gameplay is great. It was the basis of the next 6 FF games, and some other RPGs of the era as well.
Overall, I agree with your assessment of the game. And like you said in your FF9 video, "7 is the most important, this one is my favorite, and 9 is the best."

C.L. The mana series is awesome. Sword of Mana, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy Adventure, the spin off Secret of Evermore. Some have dick mechanics in gameplay, but they break my heart.
90 percent of the games "deaths" and "betrayals" wouldn't exist if the game didn't limit you to five characters at a time.
@@jasonladouceur2470 The whole Shadow family are some of my favorites in the series, especially Shadow thanks to his backstory. Leo is also a very good character. But FF4 at least had Tellah, which was a character I loved throughout my childhood until I finally figured out how to get past the Magnet Cave. Boy was my 7 year old self shot in the heart that day.
FF4 was the game that made RPG’s click for me. After playing this, I was completely hooked on the genre. It isn’t my favorite of the series, but I will always love this game, flaws and all. And I’m glad that there have been more versions that came out which are more faithful to the original and upping the difficulty. That ol’ original SNES cart will always hold a special place for me. Great review of this classic game!

You are a guy that doesn't know his true destiny

Villain is a tall man in black armor that doesn't talk much, plotwist he is your brother(not father).
Old man sacrifices himself as he fights tall evil man so you can escape from sci fi base
You find your true self, stray away from the dark side, and become a rad good side guy.
You go to a moon to fight the Tall evil man
Plotwist, Tall evil man is controlled by an evil old man, he is also kinda good inside.
Fight evil old man, save the galaxy.
Icằŗūs Kūŗøı FFVI is really Star Wars, too: a main protagonist doesn't know the secret of their lineage and the destiny they'll fulfill, there's an evil empire trying to take over everything and a resistance group opposing them, said evil empire's after sources of unlimited powah, that same main protagonist gets saved by a group of adorable fluffy warriors at one point, a mentor character gets iced by the big bad, some people turncoat to the resistance, the empire's main base gets bodied with the aid of sources of unlimited powah--there's even a literal Star Wars easter egg in the English translation (don't know if it's in the original) if you go to rescue a traitor while dressed as an imperial soldier where she says "Aren't you a little short to be a soldier?"
Final Fantasy likes imitating Star Wars a lot in their entries in various ways
I love the Crystal Prelude, but Wings Over Baron really got me to love the tunes of the series.
Oblivious I love both, but the World map theme feels so...perfect for this game. It invokes that sense of loneliness and longing. You vs the powerhouse of the world. Very few world map themes nailed it the way FF4 did.

Crystal Prelude also has an amazing version on the title screen of FF12.
I'd have to listen to them all again to compare, but I know that the Prelude in 4 and 6 are amazing.

Final Fantasy V is good too, maybe it has the best job system in the main series, and of course the music is great.
5 is my personal favorite but i feel i would like it alot more if i played it before bravely default

This was my first FF game and will always hold a special place in my heart. I must've been about 10 or so maybe younger but still had a good impact on my childhood
I do remember this being super easy...then I played the DS remake of it...got wrecked. Honestly the collection for psp (that also had the after years) is probably my favorite version of it.

I wish you'd mentioned Tellah's death, because it's the only death that isn't a fake out, plus it's a tragic tale of an old man so consumed by revenge that despite everyone telling him that he can't handle it he still wastes what's left of his life to take his revenge, then dies and never comes back.
OK we see his ghost but he's still dead.

Agreed, Tellah is absolutely the best written character in the game. Despite how much I like Kain, I have to admit the mind control is pretty dumb.

I agree. All of Tellah's problems stem from being an old jerk who would not give his blessing. If you read his thoughts in the DS version, they are never about anyone else, but how to get vengeance for Anna.

There's one other bonus to playing the DS (3D) remake of FFIV: it ADDS a few scenes that simply weren't in the original game, and these scenes provide fascinating additional character development to the relationship between Cecil and Kain, and the backstory of Golbez as well.

I LOVE this game. And RYDIA has one of THE BEST moments in ANY video game EVER, when she rejoins the team later in the game :-)
Completely agree. This is my favorite 2d Final Fantasy because of Rydia in general, the moment she shows back up, and the mist dragon you fight in the beginning. Honestly, Rydia has made it to my favorite Summoner in any Final Fantasy.
I, for one, await the continuation of this series. These Final Fantasy videos have been super fun to watch, even after all this time. Jared's pacing and review skills are on point.

I love FFIV. All it has, is all it needs to appeal to young players. It wasn't made for old bastards like us, it was made for kids and youngsters, like the ones we where in times past.
The GBA version is, though. It's the only game I've ever 100% completed.
So if I understood correctly, the GBA and the 3D version both include back the removed content from the SNES version? I've played all three of those, and I never realized there had been missing content in our (US) original. I love this game!

Final Fantasy II (IV) is my all time favorite game. I play through it once a year. I've never got sick of it ever since getting it for Christmas 91.
That's fantastic, I should start a similar tradition for 6.
I like 6 but for some reason didn't like it near as much as 4. I need to play that one again since it's been a while.

I agree, Chrono Trigger too! The SNES had the best RPG's. I can't put into words how much I loved those plus Breath of Fire 1 & 2, Lufia 1 & 2, Earthbound, Paladin's Quest, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Brain Lord, Mystic Quest, Illusion of Gaia, The 7th Saga, Robotrek, Ogre Battle, Soul Blazer, Y's III. I never played Super Mario RPG. I'd love to somehow play Terranigma and the two Dragon Warriors that were never released here.
It's not as good as IV or VI.
My favorite game of all time, thanks for reviewing this one! I've played FFIV since the day it came out on the SNES back when I was 10 years old and it has stuck with me ever since. The music is also the best in the series IMO. Especially tunes like "Within The Giant"..man, the chills I got when that played in the last last part of the Dungeon.
