Edo is the old name for Tokyo, so the title is literally "Tokyo Fang." Also the final boss's name is a reference to the Tokugawa Shogunate of the Edo period. Music in this game is supposed to be interesting, using Japanese instruments like the shamisen. Riot/Telenet's best games were on the PC Engine in Japan, such as the edgy adventure RPG Exile and the Bubble Bobble-like Pop n' Magic.
@@dieinfire920 You don't always have to translate "の" as "of." You can just treat it as a "の adjective." Like 日本の食事: "Japanese food," instead of "food of Japan." Tokyo Fang sounds more natural in English, which is what you want in a translation. Don't let the Japanese make the English awkward. Just my opinion. の has other uses besides "of" in Japanese anyway (like nominalizing verbs), so it's not a one-to-one correspondence.
I really enjoy watching your reviews. Not only do you expose me to some games that I've never heard of before, but you make a lot of comparative observations of games I am familiar with, which makes the new flavor more immersive to me. I also like how you refer to previous reviews during new ones, and your personal experiences of these games that you review. I read a lot of books, and your reviews make me think of an ongoing compilation of short stories all connected at the root. I'm never commented on a video of yours before, I just figured that it was due time to let you know that I really appreciate your work.
If you want to know what's going on in Japanese cutscenes, open the Google Translate app on your phone and use live translate via camera, just point your phone at the TV. It's honestly pretty mind-blowing. RetroArch also includes a live translation feature using similar sort of thing.
3:11 2050 A.D. Tokyo. A transport trailer carrying a top-secret powered suit prototype was stolen by a lawless group of vicious terrorists. Full disclosure: I left a part out. The terrorists are introduced, literally translated, as "牙をむく (kiba o muku) of lawlessness violent terrorists". "kiba o muku" means "to bare one's fangs" or "to snarl", but I don't understand how it's being used in this sentence. My first instinct was that it's the name of the terrorist group, but it would almost certainly be in quotes if that were the case. A direct translation would imply something like "a group of snarling vicious terrorists" but my Japanese isn't strong enough to make that assumption without more context and given that kiba (fang) is in the game's title I didn't want to leave that word out. It could also be a colloquial phrase that means something like "attacked", "threatened to attack", "revealed their intention", or "revealed themselves" or something like that. But again, I have no actual earthly idea lol
I have a name for this genre of game where it feels like a Run-'n-Gun, but your main attack is with a bladed melee weapon: Dash-'n-Slash (and in the case of Shatterhand, Dash-'n-Bash)
Good eye. Definitely Engrish for Flight (or maybe Freight). Flight and Fright sound the same to Japanese people and are spelled the same: フライト。Since you fly in the next level, it's probably Flight Elevator.
Notice that you have to take down an ICBM in this game. Similar scenario in Mercs and other games and also Godzilla 1985. You can see the Japanese horror at nuclear weapons here.
"A boss that looks like something you'd see at your grandma's garage sale" is brilliant! :) Leave it to SNESdrunk to show me an SNES game I've never heard about in 2021... Great work!
Prior to watching this video on Edo no Kiba, I watched the Psycho Dream review video days ago since both games are the only games Telenet's Riot made for the SNES. Most of the character and enemy design reminds me of Mad Stalker Full Metal Force, which is also a mech beat em up.
Yo this one is pretty cool. I also remember it on the fm towns and i like both versions. If im not mistaken theres a snes version, but i remember not liking it xD
It looks like it was programmed like a shoot em up. Every level has scrolling and the player moves freely on both axis. It's just that it sells the ideas of high speed running or flying very well.
If I didn't listen to the Drunk Friend podcast, I'd say there were a lot of 90s references in this video. But now I know there are so many more... (Btw, I was able to predict the Usain Bolt one) Have a great rest of your day!
One time I bought a copy of Sonic Wings on Ebay and I was super confused cause this was inside SF cartridge instead of sonic wings. Pretty fun game though, although I had to return it. The seller was really really suspicious that I was trying to pull something
Have you ever checked out Dyna Brothers 1 and 2? It's a Mega Drive Japanese only strategy game with dinosaurs! It's pretty simple despite the language barrier but it gets real hard after a while, you should definitely check it out
Cool video! As a game developer, there's one thing that REALLY bothers me about this game. It's how the slicing animation stops the player from running. You're running at breakneck speeds, your legs should continue to run while you slice enemies. This is a small BUT very impactful detail. It ruins the immersion for me. Not sure how this wasn't addressed way back when.
SNES Drunk always finds a way to make the weirdest obscure references.
A lot of them are from his Minnesota background, but I think he needs more Prince references.
He is just old, like me. Pop culture was once quite different.
I think one of the most obscure references is mentioning KMFDM in his Ooze video
@@MrXabungle megalomaniac is also the name of an snes game. By 80's kid 90's reasoning, it was an inevitability.
@@MrXabungle No doubt about it KMFDM sucks.
I didn't know the Super Nintendo had so many games until I discovered this channel.
@Boco Corwin one of the top consoles of all time*

Same! Drunk's channel is a great source for finding about games you had no idea existed.
Was literally about to comment the same...also gotta try some of his fave super families too (learned famicom from him too)
Yeah seriously, this channel and Xygor have opened my eyes lol. I have such a long list of games to try now.

@Super Hans Yeah, the Edo thing is because it's futuristic Neo Tokyo, but you're fighting melee like a samurai.
The name “Edo no Kiba” is literally “Fang of Tokyo”.

Exile sucks, if the Genesis version is anything to go by.
Sometimes at work, I put on a mix of SNESdrunk videos in the background. It's amazing how I keep finding new videos and games to download.
Love these cyberpunk/mecha Super Famicom games! 80's and first half of the 90's had the best aesthetic for cyberpunk, specially in Japan

The grandma garage sale line made me laugh so much.
Man, you are amazing.

Noice
Slash-'n-Dash sounds better in my ears.
Same here
1:43 At level 2 you go up the "fright elevator." I can't tell if that's an intentional pun or a translation error, but either way I like it.
Good eye. Definitely Engrish for Flight (or maybe Freight). Flight and Fright sound the same to Japanese people and are spelled the same: フライト。Since you fly in the next level, it's probably Flight Elevator.
I respect the cardio of the character in this game

That big mecha boss looks sick!

This game is most like Wolf Fang or Atomic Runner, those are definitely recommended. Autoscrolling run-'n--gun games are kind of unusual.
Good morning to all I hope you have a great day I love this channel
I want to thank you for making this video and hope you have a great rest of your day

Wasn't that recently discovered for the Sega Genesis?
Your references always bring a smile to my face, thanks. 👍
Nice video man! Never knew about this title but seeing this it looks like an interesting game! Thanks Drunk!
Constant Autoscroll: The Game.
I'm a fan of the commentary...
Never knew there were that many games...
Keep up the work...
I had to check if they still have Denorex shampoo. Yep, it looks a lot different, but it still exists!
The number health makes me nervous. Usually, health scores with numbers back then were for games where your health was always decreasing.
The best SNES channel on the TH-cams
It looks like it was programmed like a shoot em up. Every level has scrolling and the player moves freely on both axis. It's just that it sells the ideas of high speed running or flying very well.
If this game gets on NSO after Psycho Dream I'll be overjoyed, this looks like a blast
"wart playing any way you can," is the cutest way of saying "download the ROM" ever.
Turn on (CC) for a pleasant surprise in the first 3 seconds
That's a daily affirmation, if ever I saw one.
I'm glad he mentioned how much you take damage. I was wondering why every clip was of him taking damage.
This game has freaking beautiful backgrounds. Love the giant cities and the Japanese house.
Drunk could talk about suspension bridges and it’d still be fun to listen to
This looks great!!
Drunk has somehow figured out how to say “any way you can” in a way that I know he’s winking and/or using finger quotes.
Damn... that art reminds me of Dunbine.
A Jimmy Superfly reference? Props on you. Long live the late 80s and 90s!
Most fun intro ever.
Man thanks for bring us some quality informations!! 🙏
Hadn't seen this one before. Good to know.
1:20 Why are they riding motorcycles if they can just run that fast anyway?!
Also I love SNES bass sounds.
Anyone notice at 1:42 there is a typo in the game calling the freight elevator a "FRIGHT ELEVATOR," which is awesome.

Whenever Riot gets mentioned I think of Quiet Riot's Come on Feel the Noize!
No it was Quiet Riot
3:15 that ain't fog, that's the reflection of a sword.
There are many things I miss about the 90s. Every single video game soundtrack using the exact same "orchestra hit" sample is not among them.
The Inception horns of its time.
That soundtrack at the end was quite good, though. Reminded me somewhat of Lost Vikings.
Equating Edo no Kiba with Run Saber? Ish... Rough deal for Run Saber...
Love a Boss healthbar. Nice one SNES DRUNK
My favorite is at 1:43 with the fright elevator.
I love to check these games out "any way I can". 😆
The music is so rad!
You’ve GOTTA try PANZER BANDIT!

Have you reviewed "super adventure island"? Havent seen that game since my childhood days!! Good content sir
Jimmy Superfly Snuka. This is why you're the real MVP

Jimmy fly snuka and then a garbage truck you had me at Jimmy

Short answer: Yes!
Long answer: Yes, but the longer the intro, the better!
I might just be on a kick here, but i would absolutely love a snesdrunk dark souls review. You know, just cuz.
Psycho Dream is a fucking acid trip.
I'll try this one out, seems like a good snack!
Looks very interestig , i would like play it through .
Hola. Nunca había visto ese juego. Un saludo
You should check out the SNES Gon game
What garage sale has buddha statues?
2:03 Random Denorex joke FTW 😄
the music's giving me a metal slug vibe
Always glad to found another interesting game. A shame we didn’t get this in the US. I’ll never know why the fog happened b
Does anyone remember a game on ps1 that you played as someone very similar to jack from tekken was kind of side scroller shooter from memory
Remember this one, reminded me of 8 man neo geo arcade
Jesus. Just when i thought there couldnt possibly be one more "hidden gem" in the snes / famicom library here comes the jedi master snes drunk.
Thanx.... just downloaded rom!
Would a run-and-gun game with swords be called a dash-and-slash?
I'd like to see the Snesdrunk fight Joe from GameSack in a cinematic wrestling match
He would kick my ass

Some oddball bosses...I appreciate that.

Love the vid
Just gonna tap that like button.... annnnnd now we can watch the video!
Edo no Kiba (Fang of the Eastern Capital).
Hmmmm now where have I heard this one before? 😂😂
Is Hong Kong 97 worth playing today?
Damn after seeing the preview I was certain this was Lawnmower man 2 or sth like that
spiting into the wind i see what you did there lol
might have more fun with Super Turrican tbh
