I'm headed to Orlando to test today. I like that they revised the test and took away the offset and did parallel instead but it was a little challenging trying to figure out when to start backing up and when to restraighten the truck. I found using the landing gear to be helpful once you see the middle of the landing gear you should start turning back to straighten out the truck. Just go slow and watch your mirrors and try to find spots on the trailer that help you identify when to make certain moves. I wish you guys and gals the best.
I was having serious issues with this in school...I took to TH-cam to see what I could find, came across this video...watched it like 10 times and the next day I was able to go out to the site and NAIL this in one take! 3 seconds is actually very bad advice. because there may be different distances to the cones, and different drivers and tractors may have different driving speeds.

I have been in CDL school and I took my CDL skills driving test today and passed! Along with my instruction from school, I studied your videos on offset, parallel, and alley dock parking. They really helped me. Thank you! Your techniques worked! In the future, please do some videos using a spread tandem trailer. That would be helpful!

I've never driven a tractor and trailer before but I've been driving stick shifts and backing and pulling trailers forever now. With that said,this is a piece of cake and I'm looking forward to taking my CDL driving test after i go get some practice in first. I love driving and shifting so this is what i was born for so it actually excites me.Others might be nervous and hate it but i love it and I'm looking forward to it ALL!!!

Your narrative is backwards towards the end of the maneuver you say turn the wheel clockwise but you're actually turning it counterclockwise and then you say turn it counterclockwise and it's actually clockwise 1:37
He didn’t give good pointers on what to look for when you turning , he said give 3 seconds which is bs, you need to align the trailer edge right at the middle cones and stop . Then turn opposite direction to straighten truck and trailer at that point you should see both cones of the parking spot from both side mirrors and straight back adjust accordingly. These instructors don’t teach it the right way because they want you to spend money.
After you are positioned as far forward as you can go to the cone, Hard left before you roll an inch, roll back on that hard left until you see 18 inches of the trailer on your left showing, (we call that your shoulder sticking out), because it was straight before you backed on that hard left, then stop. Do not roll while turning right, turn hard right before you roll an inch, just like you did at the beginning of backing on your hard left, this is called "dry steering" because you aren't moving, anyway backup on that right until you get under it, thats called chasing your trailer, thats when you're tractor and trailer are aligned again... Now you are aligned straight with your trailer but you are at an angle to the box you are going to back up into... Turn your wheel to the right to 6 o'clock, thats a half turn, back up on that until you are bending left towards that box you want to be in, Ease that steering wheel to straight as you're backing, this is called chasing the trailer, that brings the tractor back to straight with the trailer, you are heading straight to the box, straight line backing rules now apply and you're in.

I had to practice it today it school. Except we had to back between the 2 sets of end cones almost like parallel parking. And doing it with the parking space to the right believe it or not was easier then to the left. I sometimes think the space marked next to where I needed to back may have been a distraction. But at times I was able to get it. I still have 7 more weeks of class left and hopefully I will pass the test on the first try.
Excellent video, but I'm confused as to how the "alley is 40ft deep". How does a 53' trailer PLUS the tractor length all fit into a 40' alley? Am I confusing the coned rectangular target box that I'm supposed to get my vehicle into as the "alley"? If so, what exactly IS the "alley" then? Thanks a ton in advance! 😊

I'm not seeing the last 2 maneuvers about turning the wheel clockwise and then counter clockwise. It appears he's mostly straight lining back with a barely detectable counter clockwise (at about 1:33) and then a barely detectable clockwise. Am I missing something?
I wish you tubers would show it with pull-ups. We know what’s supposed to happen. It always doesn’t go as planned. Be nice to see the corrective measures.
I looked in the California CDL manual pdf (pages 196-197) this exercise is the exactly the same as described and diagrammed on our videos. Hope that helps.
Thank you! I was looking everywhere for a step by step guide to help with offset backing. Now, I feel better about when I return to school on Monday to practice. Does anyone know if they have one for paralle and alley docking. Also, for the driver side, but, that should be simple if I can get the passenger side. In other words, is there a direct webside for online CDL training, I want to study all that they provide or is it a paying school.

Is just me but you mentioned being 90% in the box you say counter clockwise but I see the wheels pointing right and then clockwise and see the wheel going left, I'll watch it again, thanks for the video second try at the yard I got my left offset done right first try
Dennis O'Connor my off sets went real gool after I slowed down, angled a little a time, and most of all, stopped completely while I turned my wheel. Cause they said I gain to much ground I cant' recover if I roll and turn. NOW I AM ON ALLEY DOCK. UGH!!!!!!!!!

I started city driving today for four hours.. I did pretty good. My shifting isnt bad and I have three more sessions of city driving before my tests next Saturday..
I'm doing this right in school sometimes I'll do it perfect like 5 times in a row back to back sometimes with no pull-ups also then other times it'll take me multiple attempts and a few pull ups any advice?
Currently training for my AZ and I find that when the instructor say, turn your wheels left or right is confusing. I rather them say swing you tractor let or right. It's a lot simpler for angle parking.
Haven't tried this yet but I really think its going to work why? because one, I was counting to 5 seconds first mistake, 2 which I learned Friday from some one, my mistake when they were saying after the first hard right wait until hard left....don't laugh but I wasn't turning hard left to get in front of the trailer but kept going hard left to the same extent of the hard right throwing the trailer all the way in another direction, wow. This should be an amazing week. Thanks so far I will post my results,.
After the driver cuts wheel all the way to right and then waits till the tractor and trailer align does he straighten out and turn wheel counter clockwise slightly and then wait till drivers side rear trailer axles cross center line to turn wheel clockwise 3 turns? It looks like it in video. Comment?
Doing this right now, really really tough at first, and it seems you'll never get it. But once that technique you nail "clicks," it makes sense. The worst thing you can do is give up.
You said hard left then hard right the clockwise 3 times on your 3 turn but if you already hard right in your second turn then how can turn the steering wheel 3 times on your 3rd turn ?????

Hard left til the footpad looks like a diamond then hard right til the tractor & trailer are aligned…get out and look then move straight back 3-6ft (if needed) then hard right til footpad looks like a diamond then hard left til tractor & trailer are aligned… end of trailer should be a few feet from the 1st set of cones… that’s how I was taught…I’m gonna try this on Monday to see if it’s easier though… thanks.
I have to test on this tomorrow but I was taught a different way. Instead of a hard turn to begin with after pulling all the way up. Shouldn't it be an easy turn then a hard one to straighten up?
I ask the DMV here in California they said that NO cuz u have to go straight to the line that is at the end of the front and then move to the other Side on Reverse
Not sure what type of truck this is but I work for 7up and we use Freightliner. When I reverse doing this exercise the truck doesn't roll back that slowly so should I keep my foot off the brake or apply slight braking pressure?
yungjj84 it would be your choice. I would recommend that you try with the brake off and shorting your count or using your brake. Either way, practicing and modifying the tips to fit your unique situation is always the best way to go. good luck
I don't get this videos ones say just one turn to the steering wheel this one day all the way clockwise when I did that the truck started jumping and almost loose control ending far away from my line

For offset My school taught us a jungle. “45, turn the wheel all the way around, straighten your wheel, back up. Then do your get out and look

All the maneuvers are easy except the alley docking.

Haven't tried this yet but I really think its going to work why? because one, I was counting to 5 seconds first mistake, 2 which I learned Friday from some one, my mistake when they were saying after the first hard right wait until hard left....don't laugh but I wasn't turning hard left to get in front of the trailer but kept going hard left to the same extent of the hard right throwing the trailer all the way in another direction, wow. After the driver cuts wheel all the way to right and then waits till the tractor and trailer align does he straighten out and turn wheel counter clockwise slightly and then wait till drivers side rear trailer axles cross center line to turn wheel clockwise 3 turns? It looks like it in video. Comment?

You said hard left then hard right the clockwise 3 times on your 3 turn but if you already hard right in your second turn then how can turn the steering wheel 3 times on your 3rd turn ?????

So if i see the cone on my left side i turn the wheels to the right and when i see it on my right i turn wheel to the left ?
Hard left til the footpad looks like a diamond then hard right til the tractor & trailer are aligned…get out and look then move straight back 3-6ft (if needed) then hard right til footpad looks like a diamond then hard left til tractor & trailer are aligned… end of trailer should be a few feet from the 1st set of cones… that’s how I was taught…I’m gonna try this on Monday to see if it’s easier though… thanks.

I have to test on this tomorrow but I was taught a different way. Instead of a hard turn to begin with after pulling all the way up. Shouldn't it be an easy turn then a hard one to straighten up?

Not sure what type of truck this is but I work for 7up and we use Freightliner. When I reverse doing this exercise the truck doesn't roll back that slowly so should I keep my foot off the brake or apply slight braking pressure?
yungjj84 it would be your choice. I would recommend that you try with the brake off and shorting your count or using your brake. Either way, practicing and modifying the tips to fit your unique situation is always the best way to go.

I don't get this videos ones say just one turn to the steering wheel this one day all the way clockwise when I did that the truck started jumping and almost loose control ending far away from my line
i passed my test and hopped straight in a smoothbore tank and been driving every since.
