"Takes about 10-12 feet for trailer to react to tractor's correction." That's a valuable little piece of information, that so few others even think of.
So he should turn the trailer back soon as the first axle wheel crosses the first cone?
In real trucking life, you use as many pull-ups and "get out and looks" as you need to the job safely. Definitely not just two. (30 years CDL and retired.)
When I got my license In PA in 2017 we could do as many pullups and goals as we needed.
@@John_KCMO you get2 free pull ups. You can pull up more but each time cost you a point . If you did straight back and offset without using any points ( which you should of) you have 13 pull ups on 90 without failing

I remember taking my test,heart racing, hands sweating, and so nervous. Now I'm a city driver. I feel more comfortable driving a truck than my own car. It's actually all about practicing. No one can be taught how to drive. You have to learn from mistakes. Just don't hit anything while learning and you'll get there for sure.

Me too. I just passed my test this morning. Pre trip was the hardest test. Backing was easy. The drive was easy but I was sweatin like a mug. I was nervous!
I’m a experienced CDL driver and I give my self as many pull ups as possible, no shame on the job to prevent a accident
But on testing day they told I only have 2 pull up's and 2 get out's. I'm in Flint, MI and take my test next week! I am so scared!

Butter Pecan don’t be, it is an empty 53’ trailer, remember. KEEP YOUR REAR TANDES IN VIEW, alone them up with target lines (guidance lines). Like your backing up a flatbed on an old ford. Stay calm, breathe, and let the trucks idlin power do some work
I'm a hostler driver and it surprises me they only get 2 pull ups and 2 GOALs on cdl test. Is that standard at every CDL school?
Been on this Earth for 32 years and this is by far the hardest thing I've ever had to learn.

Took me about a day or 2 to get the basics down now is no problem hopefully I can do the same on my test
The difficult part is when you don't have any working knowledge of what you're actually trying to do and also avoid..... Everything is way easier when you know you can't turn the trailer the way you want until you're straight with it, knowing that you'll intuitively figure out the angles and shit

I'm trying so hard not to give but I just can't pass the alley dock...not enough practice..i have til Monday to pass or I get sent back home empty handed..my boys our looking up to me. I feel like I've failed them
Mike White failure is not an option you worked this hard to get where your at right now close your eyes and imagine you doing the alley dock take a deep breath open your eyes and do your thing and think only positive thoughts it helps a lot to calm your nerves and think of the big smiles your gonna get when you let them know you got your A license

This video taught me how to pull up correctly . I passed my alley docks today and received my cdl . I failed 2 times before this was my last chance I just wanted to say thanks.
In 1970, I worked at UPS. They had yard guys that put trailers into the docks. They often put 2 trailers in one door. You would see them pull up and beep beep then back they came. Always got it right the first time. You could not fit a broom handle between the trailers. I'm still amazed to this day.
They're still like that. UPS has such a high standard, and they train drivers intensely, and ultimately they can do really hard maneuvers that most drivers will never encounter.
I followed these exact instructions with some practice and passed my driving skill test . excellent instructional video

I'm in school now. The way they taught me I have to stop and adjust more often, but end up getting it done in one pull up for an ally doc.

See all those lines (cracks) in the concrete? Use them, they are everywhere and are your best friend when backing. Even shadows can help.
Wait how so? Care to explain? I’m thinking you’re talking about using them as a reference point of some sort, like to know where the end of the trailer is.. but i could be wrong.
@@ohskibroski yep, use as a reference point. Some docks won’t even have a painted line to follow. Use the seams (expansion joints) and cracks to guide you home.

I did my road test with the same setup as in the video. KW900 super 10 trans with a 53’ dry-van. Some people are now taking their road test on a small single axle truck with a 6-speed transmission and a 35’ Flat-bed trailer. So easy! But I’ll tell you, it’s gotten a lot harder on passing it now because it’s required to know the actual mechanical components of the truck.
Out here we using the same truck in the video when I checked out a diffrent school they was using cheater trucks lol
The shorter the trailer the harder to back
Shorter trailers react faster and are harder to maneuver than a 53

I remember watching your video 5 years ago , during that time i was also in trucking school , this video helped me out alot , i passed on my first try been driving ever since, i now work for for reyes coca cola transport department and all i do is drive to other coca cola facilities and just drop and hook, easy money 💰
I use this very method and passed with only one pull up. Very informative video. Well at least it was for me.

Alley dock is my favorite and also after 3 years and half experience I would get it in one shot but now I do pull ups or even do GOAL
I’m taking my test in a dump truck and pintle hook trailer and this maneuver got me on my first test. Hopefully I can pass it the second time around.
I have no CDL but I have a ton of practice at this I am a full-time Yard Switcher at a Distribution Center, we never leave the yard so no CDL required. If you have a big Distribution center in your area try to get a Yard Dog job it is a great way to get paid to practice moving trailers around and learning how to do a pull through, and button hooks, 45 and ally docks or button hook away from parking space so you can straight line back. Lots of practice I move 75-90 trailers a shift. Good exercise too climbing them 3 steps up to the truck and walking back to open swing doors and kick chocks. You also learn how to hook up gladhands and operate the airbrake system valves you learn what it means to slip a king pin or fail to couple and almost drop a trailer "even though you tugged it and it passed the tug test." cranking landing gear and if you are lucky you will get to move around pup trailers as well fast reacting little terds they make 53' look easy.

I drove in Chicago for 11yrs. Alleys downtown, viaducts & skinny ass streets. What I just watched is childs play. I could have gotten in between those cones on the blind side. Tandems east coast made that attempt harder than it should have been.

I'll be doing my pre trip and driving portion of my test to get my CDL soon but it will be every one except alley docking but this is very simple if you ask me and i haven't even driven a Tractor much less a Tractor and Trailer. But,I'm damn good at this stuff because I've been driving trucks with trailers for a very long time so it's pretty second nature to me and i love doing it. I know it's slighty different but it can't be that much of a difference.

When the driver got out to inspect his distance frim the dock, would have been a good time to open and secure the trailer doors too. Also, it was good to not after his first pull up that his steer corrections were quick and small. Good video.

I start about 7 feet from the bay and just about jackknife then I can look out drivers window while returning to center I stop when my bumper is just in the bay. I use a get out here and walk around the entire truck. Helps me to make my adjustment. Sometimes I will need to do a baby serpent to move the front of the trailer, and sometimes I can proceed to slip back into the bay. All depends on what I see.

Hats off to all truck drivers, alley docking and offset a semi is not easy at all. I thought it was, until I had to do it. Any great tips for both this maneuvers, using a 32 foot trailer.
Folks have no Idea what it truly takes to be a driver. That's tough enough in most cases a driver as two thirds less space to navigate and people have no patience to give them time to just doing their job. Good stuff.

I can't really see which way you turn when you pull up the first time. It doesn't even look like the steers turned. Maybe I steer too hard?

I completed Straight line backing and offset. Been doing alley dock 3 times so far this week. Having a super hard time. Hopefully I get it soon. School is up to 3 months of training.
When you back up to ally dock get about 15 15 on each side of you and pull up 90 feet from your nose to where your backing when you start backing up turn your steering all the way to the right and start moving back watch your surroundings and keep an eye on your landing gear and the back of your trailer. Once you see the second foot of the landing gear go about 2 3 inches past it and you will be about 80 85 90 degree position once your angled to the right position counter steer back the way to straitin your trailer. try to do it on the side you can see your trailer on. Blind side sucks but still achievable
during the exam skilses you can go out from the cab to look behind ???

I'm a yard driver. When using my free 2 pull ups my radio will blow up with laughter from fellow associates. Thankfully my wheelbase saves me from such embarrassment.
Over 40 years driving, retired now, get out and look as many times as you need and don't rely on someone directing you, get out and look to be sure!

On the test can you pull forward and start at 45 degree angle or has to be like this where your facing straight ahead?
This is the hardest of the three maneuvers
I failed this maneuver today in Fresno, CA. Just a FYI. . . we were not allowed to pull forward to straighten out unless the end of the trailer tip is in the box. We had to pull all the way around again (perpendicular) to re-set and restart. Super frustrating, because I did this exactly like the video -- started out with a too tight of a turn and got near the front driver side cone on the doc. Just a little FYI for anyone still practicing.
Back in 1985 I went to driving school and yes one of the skills that we learned was how to back the trucks into different situations and I didn't have any problem with it àt all cuz I had been learning from the time I was just 12 years old riding cross country with my mom's boyfriend and he taught me a lot of things and the first day that we were in the backing field we had some pretty ancient equipment to work with and the first thing that they were going to teach us was to back this old GMC tractor and trailer straight back between these orange cones and first thing our instructor asked was who can tell me what GMC doesn't stand for n tried was the first one to speak up and I told him that it doesn't stand for great mountain climbers so guess who got to go first that's right me but I wasn't worried about it he said to get in and put it in reverse and to slowly back up between the cones and first thing I do is to not only put it in reverse but on the high side and release the brakes and just stomp down on the pedal and going backwards as fast as I can and he starts yelling at me to stop and I do put the brakes on and get out and explain to him that I have been doing this most of my life and he asked me what the hell am I doing here in school instead of already out there driving for a living and I told that I needed to get my license for driving a truck and where we were at was the easiest place for me to get one
