- The fourth and final inductee into the 2017 Pompey Hall of Fame is Paul Merson.
Merson was very much a one-season wonder - but that is in no way meant as a criticism of the midfield genius brought in by Harry Redknapp.
He was the lynchpin - and captain - of the 2002/03 side that etched their names into Fratton folklore.
Coming to the end of a 17-year playing career that had seen him win titles with Arsenal and gain 21 England caps, he arrived at Fratton Park as a marquee signing.
And Merson showed a level of class seldom seen on the south coast as he orchestrated Pompey’s magnificent march to the Division One title.
His 12 goals in 48 appearances were only a small part of his vital contribution, as he sprayed exquisite pin-point passes to the strikers, including Svetoslav Todorov, who finished as the division’s leading marksman.
Not one to outstay his welcome, Merson then called time on his Blues career, rejecting the chance of one more shot at Premier League football and instead joining Walsall as player/manager.
I've been a pompey fan since 1985 - that season with Merson was the best season I've seen. Paul Walsh did something similar when he played for us (with a lot of help from Guy Whittingham) - but Merson's season was the archetype of a 'swan song'. What a great footballer, and what great memories. Thank you!
only other than Brian Clough getting a standing ovation back in the late 80s. Merse is the only other opposition to ever get a standing ovation from a Millwall crowd.
What a player Merse was, legendary season at Pompey (one of our best ever players I've seen) definitely the catalyst for getting us into the Premier League ☺
Please can someone upload the full and whole 02-03 Division One title winning season on here. What a memorable season it was. Merson played a huge part in getting Pompey up into the Premier League. Class player.

Jimmy Ripper Paul Merson is a Pompey Fan Through And Through. Paul loves Arsenal but he has always said nothing will beat that season he had At Portsmouth. He said it was a great time in his life and he loved every second of it. Paul was going mad on soccer Saturday when Pompey smashed Scum 4-1 he was going crazy when Pompey scored. He loves the club and he is Pompey through and through.
You must be mad
The English Ozil.
no the english merson
Swear Merse only played for Pompey for like 20 minutes when he was in his late forties or whatever.
That hall of fame must be pretty bare at the moment 👀 🖼️ 😂
Could be worse could be scammers trophy room
Merson grew up beside my high school in london, and probably played football in the park where we did our sports.
Got to see merson years as i stood on north bank at highbury, and i was there, the first time he showed exceptional skill in a game against liverpool at highbury. Such a wonderful bit of skill, and it was his real first moment of genius as he back heeled it to alan smith to score a great goal to seal the win that day.
Bloody cold on north bank, it would of been coming into end of autumn, but those were the days, and merson was great for us.
Merson scored the goal that ended the great liverpool side in 1991 at anfield, just a short while after kenny dagleish resigned, and no one ever knew why he suddenly left liverpool.
Merson was a great player, and i will always love the player that ended the great liverpools side at top of english football, grew up beside where i went to high school in london.
Thats what football used to be, the team you liked was full of players from where you grew up.
Even though i stopped watching arsenal in 2002, merson will always be one of my fav in the years i did.
