    9:52 onwards - second cylinder from left at the top. Looks like it has been leaking directly into that cooling port

      And the gasket when flipped over at 10:25 seems to also show markings in the same place on the same cylinder. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Agreed good spot that looks to be the problem. Also check the heads straight but if you having it skimmed they will confirm. Make sure you get the right thickness gasket but where you take the head they will advise.

    Great video Dan! With jobs like this, it's good to find the 'smoking gun', ie the failure point. I would be scrutinising the head gasket between the pots and the water ways, before you clean anything up. Even the tiniest breach will cause major issues. White/ corroded deposits on the head face where the gasket fire ring sits are a dead giveaway. Always good to find the reason for the problems imo! Good luck!

    Don't skim the head dude, never skim pd heads. Just get it pressure tested and make sure the gasket is the same they come in 3 different thicknesses. One hole, two hole and three hole you'll see which it is on the little tab that sits proud of the head at the front left side. As long as you match them up it'll be fine.

    • @dax525
      @dax525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @jayswin2
    @jayswin2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Check the gasket for holes mate. When you renew a gasket and skim a head you put a thicker gasket on. It will usually have little holes punched into it. More holes=thicker gasket. 👍

    Hey Dan, currently using your cylinder head removal process as guidance, as I have to remove mine on my 1.9L BRR engine to un-clog carbon (down to my own stupidity at pissing about trying to remove EGR valve, then intake manifold to clean, & knocking stuff down in ports & clogging centre valves). Haynes manual also proving to be seriously helpful...as well as pretty damn vague sometimes.
    Dan, did you have trouble trying to undo the turbo oil feed pipe union nut? Mine is pretty seized, & seems to be wanting to turn the fitting it screws on to (which itself is screwed into the top of turbo). Heat gun & WD on it not working yet (though has def helped on a few rusted n seized nuts elsewhere). Same for the other end Dan, did you struggle to undo feed pipe union nut at the block under oil filter casing? Need to get beyond it to crack on. I'm sure you've hit a multitude of snags yourself in your time!
    Very much appreciated Dan, your whole Restoration series has really helped in my own panel van to kombi conversion.

    Steady work... looks like the head has been off at least once before (trying to find the same problem?), possible pattern gasket and it’s definitely had sealant spread over it. Check the waterways haven’t been contaminated, but once crack checked and skimming done a good clean and it should be good to go again. Great job 😎👍

    the boost issue will be Egr stuck open due to carbon and boost presure will escape through EGR until the exhausts presure becomes more and stops boost leaking hence brief boots as it runs out.😉

    As someone else has commented, 2nd cylinder along on the mating face of the block, has a dark mark from cylinder to water jacket, compare it to cylinder 3, cylinder 3 has a silver ring round the bore as it's sealing, check the underside of the head gasket you removed at cylinder 2, your probably find its failed, you did show a dark mark that corresponds to the position of the leak
    Looks to me like the gasket has failed on cylinder 2 between block and gasket rather then head to gasket, getting the head skimmed is a pointless exercise, you need to inspect the mating surface of the block first

      Hi, Thank you. So the coolant was bubbling I think. (it was over a year ago!) and various other things. Tried to change loads to sort it but it was the headgasket that had gone.

    I have a potentially busted head gasket, got water in the engine oil and leaking coolant. First thing I'd need is a manual/specs on the engine. Any ideas where I could find one? Engine is BPC

    Wow,, Dan, that's some serious time+money on this vehicle,, I've done this many times, to many vehicles.. Man, it would of been quicker+and less money just to swap the engine,, and with less miles on one.. I get the body work etc etc, but man the time+money+effort then to finally strip the head off just doesn't make any sense to me, when there are cheaper+better alternatives... Good video tho..

      @@DanChambersDAC Fingers crossed Dan.. But that's a serious amount ot time+money spent,, and here's the thing, 9 times out of ten I've found is once the engine/cylinder head etc has had problems even after having it skimmed +all the sleeves etc etc it still has problems... You get good engines+bad ones,, I'll give you an example,, right I had 2 Mitsubishi shogun engine's both identical except one had done 190000 miles,, No problems whatsoever,, the other one only 87000 miles,, nothing but trouble,, oil leaks, water leaks, overheating... I even tried what you did, new radiator, waterpump, hoses, etc etc,, but it was just a waste of time+money... And I've had other engines do exactly the same,, Mercedes 270 ml diesel.. Nissan Navara engines,, Personally I think you've got a bad engine,, and once you go to that length to put right an issue it's time to reassess,, Just my opinion/experience.. But I do like your work.. The bodywork was fantastic... Keep it up...
