      Used to deliver in south Georgia in box truck- seen two once about 300 feet- they turned and both were on their side with wing tips 200 feet above the trees. Awesome! Crossing the Altamaha River on long bridge another time- looked down river as A-10 made a sim bomb run- did a dip as he released. Felt so honored to be a target!

    One of the best looking planes ever. I worked on the wing carry through section (the titanium bulkhead that the main landing gear and the wing hinge pin attach to) at Rockwell when they were in El Segundo CA. The process included putting various size bars of titanium into ceramic molds, heat them up to white hot under pressure, and the pieces would fuse together to make sections of the bulkhead. This was called 'diffusion bonding". The seams where each section was fused together was then machined flat so they could x-ray and ultra sound them to see if there were any voids. Those voids would then be machined out and filled with titanium weld, and those welds were subsequently checked for voids in the same manner. After all the voids were filled, they would final machine each piece into shape, and then all the pieces would be welded together to make the final bulkhead. I heard from one of the head manufacturing engineers that once, one of the pieces that has passed final inspection for the voids being filled was sitting on a pallet, and suddenly it popped, and split in a section that was suppose to have been a solid piece. As I recall, a few of these planes fell from the sky, and I always questioned if these bulkheads were just snapping due to the manufacturing and inspection process not being good enough.

    I was at EAA in Oshkosh about 30 years ago when I was young. I worked with my uncles and cousins to help park the planes that were arriving at the airshow. I was facing away from the runway when I felt the ground shake and heard this absurdly loud sound. Turned around to see a B-1 climbing at about 60 degrees. I'll never forget it.

    One of my uncle's worked on the b-1 project. All that he could tell me is he did something in the bomb bay area. The plane was built right under the nooses of a major population center. He said people would watch him even when he was at home. Every one was searched entering and exiting the building's. He and every one was indoctrinated to keep their mouth shut.
    Even after the project was out in the open he still wouldn't tell me what went on and what he did.

    Has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing aircraft to look at in the world. If I had ever been a military pilot, flying the B-1 has got to be one of the most kick ass aircraft in the world to hit the burner cans and get the fuck out!!

    I could watch these videos for hours. I have a question.What are the "contrails" I see coming off the wing tips of these jets?

    • @thegeneralreggie
      @thegeneralreggie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are wingtip vortices. The pressure differential from the top and bottom of the wing meet there, and in very wet air as we see here, saturation can be reached, and the water condense. So, it's basically a small cloud. They really don't last long at all since the pressure difference equalizes quickly.

    Saw this at quonset air show and omg probably the LOUDEST plane ever. Even without after burners it makes so much noise

      The XF-84 is the loudest ever built. It’s a turboprop but it’s blade tips go Mach 1.18 in idle which makes it so loud u can hear it idling 25 miles away. You can barely hear any afterburning fighter jet that far at full afterburner and you can just barely hear the B1-B taking off 15 miles away. Now just imagine how much louder the XF-84 will get at max RPM producing an 800-900Hz buzz of sonic booms from the prop tips
