    I had to say, I very much appreciate the fact that you are one of the few tech reviewers who explore the used market as much as I do. When a new iDevice comes out I am always excited but not for the new device but rather because older devices will become cheaper and in my price range. And I completely agree that the 2018 iPad Pro is a better buy than a new IPad Air 5th gen. Great video.

      I wholeheartedly disagree, 8 gigs of ram are a huge deal. I mean this thing is going to be supported as long as the Air 2 was. Also, it's probably going to see more support than the Pro M1, because they're planning on selling it for significantly longer.

    One of my best purchases has been a 2020 iPad Pro from the Apple Refurbished page. $600 for the same new design, 120hz, and is still more powerful than anything I need it for. I agree with your thought process that the new ones increasingly just make 1-2 year old models the best value. Hate to see this level of poor build quality though!

Just check periodically throughout your day and you will eventually get it in stock. It's not one of those 3rd party sellers either - sells directly from Walmart itself. I have mine on order. The operating system doesn't matter, it's the performance. A12X and Z don't run power user apps like DaVjnci Resolve and Procreate all that well. Also won't be able to run future power user apps, since most people developing for the iPad use the M1 as a bottom spec and just throw some pity support at lower end models.

    iPad’s biggest problem remains its software. As long as it’s hobbled by Apple’s weird restrictions and OS choices, plus the locked App Store, it’s never going to fully take advantage of any of the new hardware that Apple puts into it. Seeing M1 in the Pro last year with little to show for it hammered home how stagnant the iPad has become as a platform for software.

    I use the same theory when buying Macs. I'm just waiting a few more months for the first gen M1 mini to drop in price and I'll snatch one of those up. M1 with a 1TB SSD and 16 GB of RAM is far more computer than 98% of the population would ever use or need anyway.

    Generally I agree with the sentiment, I just wanted to mention that I did this exact thing--got the air 4 when the air 5 came out (from Decluttr, even) with some mixed results. I got an apple pencil from them for $80 and it looked brand new, so that was great. The ipad, on the other hand, was totally messed up. It was dead out of the box so I plugged it in, did the setup and all once it revived, without thinking anything of it. But it never charged after many hours and would die if I unplugged it, making it rough just to get back into it so I could erase my account info before sending it back. Sending it back was a hassle because at first they said they would try fixing it first and issuing a refund only if they couldn't fix it, rather than simply issuing a refund on receipt of the return. Fortunately I was able to ask for that and they agreed, so it definitely could have been worse. But I ended up getting the 5 instead, partly because I didn't want any more waiting or hassle, and partly because I suspected that the M series would start getting exclusive updates and features soon. Kind of a gamble either way, but that was just my experience. In the future I would probably go apple refurb or something like an Amazon with easy returns. Or try and find something local that I can actually inspect before buying. For a moment there I thought I was going to have to wait who knows how long for either the repair or the refund.

    I purchased my 2020 iPad Air from Costco along with the extended 2 year warranty. They typically will knock 10 bucks or so off the normal retail price but the service contract is what tipped the scales for me. For the same price as AppleCare+ I got a 2 year warranty with SquareTrade with no deductibles and that includes cracked screens and spills. If there's a lesson to be learned it would be to shop around.

    But if (as I was at the time) someone is sitting on an old big-bezel baseline model (BBBM), this new iPad Air would be a good upgrade.
    And there's something to be said for buying new. I buy a lot of refurbished products so I have no problem with buying old or used. But there is something to be said for having a brand spankin' new product. And the new iPad Air is a fabulous product (my brother just bought one).

    As someone who has tinkered with iPads from friends and relatives including the 9th gen iPad and 2018 iPad Pro, and 2020 iPad Air, I think I would want to go with the M1 iPads, because for my use case the iPad would basically be my secondary photoshop and Lightroom machine, and I’ve noticed a slow down on all of the iPads I’ve tried when doing tasks like photoshop on iPad.
    I think that for the majority of people, who just want to do web browsing, watching movies and social media on their iPads, yeah! I love the form factor of it, I know the software has limitations but for the power i still can push outta the machine in the 11in size, it can’t be beat for me, it is truly 100 percent portable. For me this is aimed a very specific set of people, Travel Vloggers. I mean apple does actually sell the DJI Pocket 2 on their site. I'm talking about The kind of travel Vloggers that travel light and live out of one rucksack. To reduced the footprint and space a laptop takes up but still be able to editing videos (which for most of the time are just throwing 45 Minutes worth of clips together) & have the power to get a video edited and exported in one night is invaluable.
    For the most part i agree this is way overpowered for most users but for Travel Vloggers this could be a game changing tool if utilised with the likes of lumafusion.
    Anyways that just my two cents.

Battery life could be better and so could the display, but overall it’s an iPad. You know what you are getting when you purchase one. I always recommend people buy used a generation behind unless they are coming from far older devices. Then buying new makes sense because the turnover rate is so low.

    M iPhone 13 Plus was packed weird also. I didn’t record the unboxing (lol) so I don’t remember whether it was flipped over or if it was top to bottom but it wasn’t right. Also worth noting that I’m typing this on an iPad Air 2 that I’m perfectly happy with. There is a discontinued Zagg keyboard that makes this version like a little laptop and as long as I can keep this configuration going I don’t plan on doing any upgrading on it. (Why can’t anyone else make a laptop type case for these things? The keyboard is also very satisfying to use)

    The question, with all the power of the M1, why are we still not able to run Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools on the new iPad's? If you could, there would be no reason to buy an older iPad. Could it be that Apple is holding back on this feature for the iPad to protect the future of their Desktops?

  • @jonpcostello
    @jonpcostello 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm going to keep banging the same drum. If over half the ipad models have m1s with hypervisor accelerators, we need a hypervisor framework in ipados. Then these things will be worth it. A small light base os, but jump into a full vm if you need it for certain tasks instead of needing a remote desktop app and network access

    • @the_wiki9408
      @the_wiki9408 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple would never give you that flexibility because then you’d buy fewer devices. They could just as easily let you dual boot MacOS as it obviously runs on the M1 hardware. But they won’t.

    • @jonpcostello
      @jonpcostello 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the_wiki9408 Optimizing macos to run natively on the ipad(and apple taking full responsibility for the experience) while keeping mac purists on laptops and desktops isn't easy. Touch friendly targets just aren't going to make people on a new studio and studio display happy. Just putting in the api and letting app developers deal with trying to shoehorn a desktop experience into the ipad though is much less risky for them. Just like they let remote desktop apps in the store, but don't make their own. If it did take off and everyone was downloading vm apps from the app store, apple could make their own macos inside ipados type app or something(but probably still wouldn't).

      @@jonpcostello Understandable, but they've already done the opposite and allowed iPad apps on MacOS with a bad keyboard and mouse alternative for touch input. So offering an equally poor experience the other way as well at least gives us choice. I suspect most would want the fancy apple keyboard w/ touchpad for using desktop software anyway. Maybe Apple makes it a requirement and then it can be a way for them to extract more money from us.
      Also, the same would apply for allowing virtualization you mentioned above. Not sure how Fedora or Windows ARm is going to work without a keyboard or mouse.

They just add an api, it's a lot less work, no real risk, and a potential to upsell some users with more storage

As you said the iPad doesn't change that much so planing for 7-8 years on my next iPad is definitely an option.

    Luke (& others), your opinion: I use an iPad 7th Gen to run ForeFlight for flying. The $429-at-the-time 128GB iPad is great, but I know ForeFlight is working it pretty hard, causing the battery to drain a good bit during a 1-2hr flight. I'd like a more powerful iPad that runs cooler and uses less of the battery in ForeFlight. Thinking maybe the $609 refurb iPad Pro 11" (2nd Gen, A12Z) w/ 128GB. ProMotion and twice the storage would seem to give it the edge over the $599 iPad Air 5th Gen (and a 4th Gen @ $499 for that matter), don't you think? And A12Z ought to be close enough in performance to give me the same improvements over my current A10 Fusion iPad, right? Thanks for the video to get the options thought process going!

Well all the accessories for an iPad Pro cost a lot!
