I *really* want an iPad as my daily driver. Thin, lightweight, and true all-day battery. As a software developer, however, I spend much of my day in a command prompt. I live in iTerm2. So yeah, MacOS and a real keyboard are what I need
@@CertifiedSlamboy Good to know. My personal machine is a 2014 MBA. It still works great but has its limitations. I had been thinking about an M1 MBA, but decided to wait for mini-LED to get even better battery life. I’m hoping for either an MBA or fan-less MBP in a smaller package (
The lack of a real keyboard is huge for programming and a lot of other basic task. Yeah you can get those add on keyboards for iPad but they are not going to be something you want to type all day on. And of course ios is both a blessing and a curse. For light use it’s great, but step out of the box for something as complex as coding and all you get is work arounds that never fully overcome the shortcomings of iOS.

iPad is far superior for research and reading PDFs and any ebook based work. So definitely they shine in their respective areas. You CAN use the iPad like a netbook for typing and browsing and email, but obviously the ports on a MacBook Pro are superior for what it is also. Both together are the best option. Especially for the base model iPad and a used MacBook Pro. It’s literally cheaper than a new machine, and you get both.
@@ghost-user559 for research I need up to 20 PDFs open at a time and at least 4 on one monitor, so an iPad is typically not feasible with its operating system
@@NFStopsnuf Well for me that is a different phase of research. When I am reading specific text very deeply that is a different step than skimming and comparing 20 sources and compiling a bibliography. But you do have to have a certain workflow and mindset. For example going through one source at a time (which at some point is necessary to actually absorb information on a new topic) the iPad is perfect because as an ereader it excels at hard to read text because you can change the zoom and brightness and orientation in a tactile way very easily, so it is ideal for dealing with specific sources you need to be very familiar with. For broad strokes? Or research on a multitude of sources that you might just have to regurgitate for school or an essay or something? Yeah you probably want multiple monitors. But to me you wouldn’t want just one device anyway because they are focusing on different steps of the research process. Annotating individual sources? iPad. Compiling all your sources and weeding through your entire bibliography? Desktop computer. But only using one and you loose the advantage of the other. Try taking handwritten annotations on your multi monitor display? You cannot. Just like iPad does poorly with spreading out 20 documents all at once. They both have a different place in the research process. If I had to choose one I would use the computer, but the iPad basic is 299$ so no one has to choose only one anymore, they have become affordable devices to integrate into anyone’s workflow.
This video was interesting - thanks Luke for doing these perspective on older/base machines. As you said, I think you can go either way depending on your needs
I bought a MacBook Pro 13 Retina Late 2012 for around 350 with a new battery, I chose this instead of an iPad just because of the bigger screen and it just can do more for the price. Everything runs perfectly smooth too.
NO sh***t. These videos are so clicky baity. You could take an m1 mba and a ipad and do the same thing. What people that do not nerd out on geekbench realize that they are the 92% of tech users vs the people that always want it to do more than it does and whine (ok whine is strong) or better word state that they always need more. If that is the case build a custom pc. Most people can use an ipad for what they need. Anyways Monday will be here soon. Let the complaining BEGIN!
@@savagligorijevic4639 depends, I tried using a iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard as my main computer because I gifted my MacBook Air but the os was trash to be used as a sole device so I sold everything and got an M1 MacBook pro
Not all Apple desktop users are into graphics design or media. I would never pick a tablet over a proper MacBook Pro with SSD and huge ram (minimum 16 GB)
So sad that the M1 can't address more than 16 gigs of ram. I won't even consider a new laptop unless I can put 64 gigs in it, and if Apple doesn't bring ECC to the next Macbook they can just forget about my patronage altogether.
The iPad can replace a computer for people who don't need a computer. It's like asking: "Could this dirt cheap new bicycle replace a twenty year old used car?" Yes, it absolutely can. If you don't need a car. Makes no fucking sense, to be honest.
Ok so : Intel Macs as of right now have 8 years max of software updates (including the original version they ship with). So I think the M1 Macs will have 10 years of software updates (including the original version they shipped with).
@@vihaansingha8340 You can also use patchers made by the community to go well beyond that even. I can get Monterrey on my 2012 MacBook Pro, and it list support on Catalina.
I agree with your conclusion. I like the idea of using an iPad as a replacement for my laptop but there are just some things that are easier for me to do on the laptop or desktop. For example, I recently had to fill out a mortgage application and I did not even consider doing that with my ipad even though I have a magic keyboard. To me it still doesn't feel like a full laptop for typing. I still use my iPad for lots of stuff like games and content consumption. It is still my favorite for casual old man games. I use it for games more than my switch or phone.
Thanks Luke. I took the 'poorer man's' route.......I love (and am keeping) my mid 2012 MacBook Pro, but bought the basic iPad just to get a cheap-ish route to another 7 years of support / upgrades to at least one Apple OS
This was a very creative yet practical idea for a video. Thanks for making these! Without being aware of this video, I suggested a few days ago that my girlfriend help her mom (early 80's with early onset dementia) buy exactly this iPad. She has a 2012 MBP 13 and an early base iPad. Both of those devices are well past their prime, and her mom is now at a stage where quality of life and helping her to do things easily will become increasingly important. This video showcases the value proposition for the 2021 iPad makes my point for why I made the recommendation so well I have already told my girlfriend about it.
You should consider putting Linux on it now that Apple doesn't support it. You'll be getting security updates that wouldn't otherwise get installed on MacOS.
I've been using my 2018 iPad pro for so long and just now got a used macbook pro! And I love it was the non touch bar 2017 13in mac configure with an i7, 16Gbs ram, and 256 ssd for only $380! Love using the both of them for school
As part of my emergency go bag, I have an iPad that is added to it I also have an iPad Mini that gets given to any companion that is exiting with me. These are meant to be backups to cell phones and are registered with alternative service providers for the cell phones.
I’m watching this video on my iPad 9 rn and I gotta say, best purchase ever, as a student this is way more versatile and comfortable for me to use as an everyday machine, I’ve written countless notes, essays and more on my iPad while also doubling it as a media consumption device, the display is more than large enough and looks pretty damn good if I do say so, the speakers are loud and clear, there was a never a point while using it where I thought, “damn I wish I bought a laptop”, plus Apple Pencil is a win
MacBook Pro unless you need the extra power. I've been using a 2013 i7 MBP attached to a 27" monitor and loving the double screen, the keyboard, and the options. Sure the 8gb of RAM can be an issue along with heat/fan if you try to do too much (too many CPU/RAM sucking apps) but for most tasks it works very well. iPad would be a poor replacement for me. I am likely to replace it with a M1X Mac mini soon though!
This is a little bit off topic because it’s different devices, but I have been using an iPad air 2 with a folding Zagg keyboard case for years and while the ipad has all the limitations of it’s age that you would expect, but that Zagg keyboard case is so much better than any other tablet case out there I can’t figure out why no one else is doing it! The keyboard is comfortable to use, it sits on your lap like a laptop, it’s thin and light, and the battery life is incredible. I try to remember to plug it in every couple of months so I’m not sure how long it will go before it dies, but it lasts forever and I use it constantly. Apparently Zagg has quit making that case for newer devices too (why? Apple copyrights? I don’t know) but I can’t believe no one else makes something like this. I have used a folding case like the one you show and no comparison of comfort of the keyboard keys, etc. I actually originally bought this case at Goodwill before I bought my ipad just because I thought it might make a good bluetooth keyboard to use with my kindle tablet, even if it didn’t snap in. I bought a used iPad air 2 soon after and was pleased to see it coincidentally was the right size for my random case. I’ve replaced it once since then (for $19 new on eBay) and it’s going strong. The hinge broke on the first one, but I’m not particularly careful with it so they have been very durable.
This video really sold me on the new base iPad. I do own an older MacBook Pro and after I replace the hard drive and the disk Drive for SSD’s I am sure it’s going to enjoy yet another long life. Plus, I can still install windows in it which is fantastic.
While I prefer the way MacOS handles multitasking and just overall functionality for productivity tasks, if you are spending $400 on a computer, you’re likely going to only use one or two applications at a time and the iPad does that type of multitasking incredibly well.
Does it run common desktop apps? Can you easily do some budgeting on (desktop w/ formulas) Excel with a precise trackpad? Does it have a built in backlit keyboard for darker rooms and is it comfortable enough to type long Word documents/assignments on? Can you extend it to an external monitor? Can you move your windows around and multitask in a meaningful way? Do you have a proper file manager? Can you god forbid connect a USB or external drive to it easily? Only one machine here can do that and it isn't the iPad. I think the average user doing regular productivity work will be more annoyed by the walls they run into with an iPad as their main computer, than they would on a new budget pc or used high-end Windows laptop/Macbook. After all many of us did those same things in 2014 with a regular desktop OS, the processing power is adequate for basic productivity work. The iPad is limited not by raw processing power but software limiations.
I actually made an attempt at trying to replace a MacBook with an iPad. I sold my previous MacBook and bought a 4th gen iPad Air. While I was able to do a majority of what I would do on the iPad, I found myself wishing I had the MacBook for a few specific tasks. Therefore, I ended up getting myself another MacBook by selling the iPad Air and also being able to get an older iPad Air 2 that still supported the latest iOS.
Since my initial comment, I have swapped back and forth several times lol. I tend to be indecisive. My current iPad is a M1 11 inch iPad Pro and a 2013 MacBook Pro. The MBP I got REALLY cheap from someone on fb market that didn’t know much about it. Turns out the previous owner before they had it had locked it out somehow. I was able to get past that and basically do a complete reset and now it’s working perfect. Only issue is that it needs a screen replacement. It’s not horrible. It could actually be used as is without fixing the screen but I’m gonna get it fixed.
You know if you use and iPad as a Mac replacement you yourself will be frustrated with all the limitations you get from iPad os for very simple task you have to use time consuming workarounds.
Luke! I need the update to your certained budget with all of Apple Ecosystem! It is the most intriguing discussion to me right now! You can start with $1000 Apple Ecosystem Budget! Desperately! 😩
Luke Miani I have a question So I have an old iPad that won't turn on unless I plug it in... When I do that my iPad is stuck in boot loop.. When I connect it to my Mac it won't show the Apple Logo...
The sole thing that I miss on my iPad is a full version of office. The iOS version has become better over the years, but it’s still not as good as the MacOS version. Apple page is wayyyy better on the ipad.
I spend most of my day creating and editing MS Word documents. Hard enough to do that on a laptop - the tiny toy keyboard of the iPad would drive me nuts in no time.
@@subhadeepdutta3086 Yes. Apple will never port MacOS to iPad. So iPad can never be a proper laptop replacement. But if you're a real light user and instead of buying a budget friendly Core i3 laptop from 2017, you buy the base model iPad 9th gen, its a pretty solid deal.
question... What if you want to download files, edit pdfs, copy, paste files, create folders organize documents, excel table sheets etc... I have an iPad but I don't think you can do such a thing on them, so for usability and depending on your needs of course I'd also lean towards the iMac
Just ordered a late 2013 MacBook pro with a 15 inch display, I7 8 gigs,, and 256gig storage no delamination for under $350. Hard to beat. Also got offers from several other ebay sellers to lower their price on other MBPs. I think they want to dump anything that will not get updates. 2015 and higher still supported on the latest update. However with a patcher you can still get latest Macos. For now.
If you are going to use the old mac for a short time then you should opt for the MacBook, but if you are going to use it for a bit more longer then you should opt for the iPad because Apple now has a pc performance iPad (iPad pro m1) which is more capable than what the iPad os is meant for so they will eventually give the iPad os more multitasking capabilities and professional apps like Davinci resolve. And if that is the case then the iPad will receive multitasking capabilities ect in a few years and will surpass some more expensive new laptops.
Thanks Luke. My standard iPad (6th gen) doesn't cut it for editing video - can't edit Dolby Vision HDR, and it can't auto-sync audio. LumaFusion was supposed to get audio auto-sync "sometime this summer," but nope. I'd never buy a 2014 Mac, nor would I upgrade my iPad to a Gen 9. With an M1 Mac Mini I could run FCP and Compressor to get good-looking small files out of Dolby Vision footage. PLUS Macs are more fun - file management in iPadOS is awful, especially if you aren't in an all-Apple environment (no PCs allowed). So - Mac, Mac, Mac.
I have found that Numbers works better for me on the MacBook Air then it does on my iPad. Still spent 5 years as an iPad only user tho and the M1 Air is my first Mac. Lovin both and both have pros and cons.
You said it perfectly but why not both? as an intel late 2013 MbP 15 user, the iPad with the smart keyboard is perfect for 90% of the tasks of what a laptop can do but I use the MacBook for pure development work.
It's not either/or for some of us. In addition to a pair of new M1 iMacs, which we use for most of our main solo work, my wife and I both have older MBPs (2012 and 2015) and a pair of relatively new (last year) iPads. When we're working together, facing one another across a table, we use the MBPs to access files we're reviewing and we use the iPads for a number of specialized foreign-language apps that are available to each of us individually for quick look-ups.
iPadOS is a let down. I’m just going to put it out there. If you edit video or do something resource intensive, the newer chip is better for sure. But if you do resource intensive work you likely need something better than a $350 device anyways. As a biologist who just needs basic office task like opening papers on chrome, checking email, working on docs, ppt, and excel, having a true desktop operating system even with an aging CPU and limit RAM is way better than the clunky multitasking on any tablet. I’ve even replaced my iPad with a cheaper slower chromebook as my secondary device. The ease of use using windows and tabs on a more tradition desktop OS is far more beneficial than a faster processor.
I typically use Apple products for away from desk devices so regardless of the video outcome I would choose the ipad as I will most always have a superior at desk option waiting for me. The extra battery life and content consumption options on the ipad fit my needs more. I also believe that from a budget perspective if someone were trying to start a channel on TH-cam that software to accomplish that would be easier to find on ipad and your trade offs would be less impact than the actual compute loss from an older gen macbook like in the video. Cool comparison!
For 330 usd about 300 pounds you can get a better xiaomi pad 5 here In the uk 6gb ram +128gb 120hz ips Dolby vision 10 bit full screen display Snapdragon 860 7nm which delivers better performance than the a13
If you are a creative professional, you might want both. Scenario: Graphic designer. Macbook Pro sits on a laptop stand with external monitors, mouse and keyboard hooked up. Ipad used to hand draw stuff with apple pencil and then airdrop the files to the macbook for integration into larger projects using the full adobe suite.

I have since realised how frustrating iOS can be for the more administrative type work I do. So, I have now bought an old 2013 13” MBPro to supplement what the iPad isn’t so good at.

There is definitely a use case for both of them, i personally use a 2012 MacBook Pro on Monterey with OCLP, and its working just fine for me, but I do see the value of the iPad in some perspective.
I still use an an early 2013 i7 MacBook Pro as my main computer. I have been waiting for something like the M1 to arrive. I will wait a bit longer. I have been very tempted to get that iPad. The only thing that bugs me it that it is only compatible with the 1st gen pencil. Why Apple why?

My combination has been iPad and iMac for years. Currently my 10.5” iPad Pro with Logitech Combo Touch keyboard replaces most day to day tasks - writing, surfing, gaming and creative stuff with Procreate and Lightroom. It’s great. The iMac is for when I need to get a lot done, and finish off Lightroom stuff. But everyone’s needs are different, which is what I ask folk when they ask me whether to get an iPad or not.

Hi Luke. First of all thanks for the excellent content you bring to us. That is another good one in regards to cost-effectiveness when comparing devices. One thing to maybe check again is the upgradability of the MacBook. I had that same MacBook for a few years and I’m pretty sure there is no way to upgrade its SSD since is tin plated to the motherboard. Thanks again.
Nice video. I've recently made the transition from carrying an iPad, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and stand to carrying a laptop. I mostly used my iPad for text, email, phone calls, FaceTime, and media consumption. Then I remembered I had a Late 2014 MacBook Pro lying around. My laptop bag got heavier. But my everyday setup is cleaner and easier to use. Due to my low demand on the MacBook, I haven't experienced any performance issues. Being that both devices are performing the same low demand task, my MacBook is definitely faster. But then again, it may be that I am more efficient on the MacBook. Just create desktop shortcuts to your favorite websites, change the icons to you liking, then an old MacBook can be a perfect couch buddy.

Spoiler: it depends on your usage scenario.

Your content is the answer to my questions. You are amazing ❤.
dang luke, the b roll in this video is astonishing! keep up the good work!
Amazing video ! I’ve actually upgraded my mid 2014 MacBook Pro with a M1 Mac mini for my home office and an ipad 8 for Uni last year.
The iPad can replace a computer for people who don't need a computer. It's like asking: "Could this dirt cheap new bicycle replace a twenty year old used car?" Yes, it absolutely can. If you don't need a car. Makes no fucking sense, to be honest.
Very interesting 🤔 watching in my iPad 6 and still fine on my mid 2012 mbp
exactly what i wanted to see at exactly the right time
You bring up an interesting idea regarding software longevity on the Mac. I wonder if we’ll start to get 7 years of software updates with the M1 macs?
interesting thought Alex
Ok so :
Intel Macs as of right now have 8 years max of software updates (including the original version they ship with).
So I think the M1 Macs will have 10 years of software updates (including the original version they shipped with).
@@vihaansingha8340 You can also use patchers made by the community to go well beyond that even.
I can get Monterrey on my 2012 MacBook Pro, and it list support on Catalina.
For a moment I thought to get iPad Pro for video editing instead of M1 MacBook. But gave up the idea
Thank you for your videos Luke! I found it soothing the music and video on minute 5:21 while you cleaning up the macbook 😇
It sounded like Mr Rogers neighborhood. I mean that in a good way. I thought he was going to take us to the land of make believe.
The best thing about your content is, it’s transparent, no oversell , just great video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Luke. I took the 'poorer man's' route.......I love (and am keeping) my mid 2012 MacBook Pro, but bought the basic iPad just to get a cheap-ish route to another 7 years of support / upgrades to at least one Apple OS
Did you know that OpenCore Legacy patcher can patch macOS Big Sir or Monterey to run smoothly on macs 2009 or newer?
This was a very creative yet practical idea for a video. Thanks for making these!
Without being aware of this video, I suggested a few days ago that my girlfriend help her mom (early 80's with early onset dementia) buy exactly this iPad. She has a 2012 MBP 13 and an early base iPad. Both of those devices are well past their prime, and her mom is now at a stage where quality of life and helping her to do things easily will become increasingly important. This video showcases the value proposition for the 2021 iPad makes my point for why I made the recommendation so well I have already told my girlfriend about it.
I am still using macbook pro mid 2012. New hard drive but I still love it.
Same. Its really not slow for me at all and doesnt use up anywhere near close to 16 gbs of ram.
It's great with a SSD and 16 GB ram despite the outdated design.
Also hosts one the greatest keyboards ever
You should consider putting Linux on it now that Apple doesn't support it. You'll be getting security updates that wouldn't otherwise get installed on MacOS.
@@denniskoeman3098 I know, love the keyboard too.

You're the most outstanding analyzer for choosing affordable and suitable Apple devices. Please review and analyze apple pencils, warches and Airpods.
You should try the iPad 9th with the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard, it steps up to iPad Pro level with Magic Keyboard
But it's way too expensive been so it defeats the purpose
It’s the same price as Apple overpriced Smart Keyboard, it’s a better value overall
You should compare the 12.9 in iPad Pro the first generation which is about $350 to the Mac would be more even comparison
Thank you for actually answering the question you asked👍🏾
MacBook Pro unless you need the extra power. I've been using a 2013 i7 MBP attached to a 27" monitor and loving the double screen, the keyboard, and the options. Sure the 8gb of RAM can be an issue along with heat/fan if you try to do too much (too many CPU/RAM sucking apps) but for most tasks it works very well. iPad would be a poor replacement for me. I am likely to replace it with a M1X Mac mini soon though!
My primary is a 4th gen iPad Air. Bought it last year, haven’t missed a laptop at all.
That Macbook is literally the same as the one I'm watching the video with!
You should've chosen a newer ipad air 2. I'm pretty sure thats the last update it gets...
You know if you use and iPad as a Mac replacement you yourself will be frustrated with all the limitations you get from iPad os for very simple task you have to use time consuming workarounds.
iOS also doesn’t have Finder. I use it extensively for my business. The integration that it can support with cloud applications is great too.
This was actually a very clever video. Thanks

Luke Miani I have a question
So I have an old iPad that won't turn on unless I plug it in...
Hard enough to do that on a laptop - the tiny toy keyboard of the iPad would drive me nuts in no time.
laptop is laptop and tablet is tablet. They cant replace each other!

@@subhadeepdutta3086 Yes. Apple will never port MacOS to iPad. So iPad can never be a proper laptop replacement. But if you're a real light user and instead of buying a budget friendly Core i3 laptop from 2017, you buy the base model iPad 9th gen, its a pretty solid deal.
iPad is noce for some basic tasks but advanced tab stuff. Mac can do much more.
question... What if you want to download files, edit pdfs, copy, paste files, create folders organize documents, excel table sheets etc... I have an iPad but I don't think you can do such a thing on them, so for usability and depending on your needs of course I'd also lean towards the iMac
I would go with the MacBook, as all the cons for the iPad are literally must haves for me for a daily driver device.
I have both ipad and macbook pro. The ipad i use for creative art using pencil then the mac is for browsing and other productivity purpose.
Could you do a video on refurbished or open box apple products from Apple, Best Buy or Micro center
I already ordered an macbook pro 2014 thnks for the vid man 👍
Thanks Luke.
I just bought a late 2013 base model 15” MacBook Pro for £240 in mint condition was it a good buy???????
iPadOS is a let down.
