    So the video I'm refuting originally popped up in my "Recommended" and there were so many blatant lies in it, I just had to make a rebuttal.

      Women are making a press for supremacy. Tell me, if I did a job that required me to work less hours, work a smaller database, and my work wasn't as good as my CEO's, would I have anyone defending my demand to the same percentage of revenue as my CEO's stock options? Even then, would anyone defend me and we aren't profitable yet because we're building up the company? That's basically what this is they're asking for. Smaller balls, bigger rims, shorter lines, less games, and less money brought in (actually losing money) with downward projection = Same pay in what world? A feminist's world. No logic.

    • @mgecko2959
      @mgecko2959 5 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      Well as much as it works in basketball I wouldn't completely agree with you on every sport. I mean I enjoy watching women's tennis for example not to mention women's MMA which often delivers fights better than men's MMA. There is plenty women sports I enjoy watching its just basketball isn't one of them.

    • @synical7733
      @synical7733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      MajicGecko PMPL Women's tennis and MMA aren't really inferior in regards to the men's counter parts, as you said women's MMA and tennis are both equal quality.
      It really doesn't have anything to do with women as much as it does skill, and marketability off of that. There really isn't any high flying jaw dropping WNBA players at all.
      The reason being is that women are playing against women, and they don't develop the same talents as the men who have to play against the men.
      And that has no sexist connotation, it has to do with those men being the top rated basketball player's in the ENTIRE nation

    • @mgecko2959
      @mgecko2959 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@synical7733 I completely disagree. If it is a case of women competing against women why do female tennis players almost as enjoyable to watch as male players? They play against women as well, sure they can practice against men but its the same with basketball. In fact I guarantee you that female basketball players spend probably 10 times as much time playing against men than tennis players did. Simply because from very young age female tennis player compete against other females. IN case of basketball there are not as many chicks balling out there so they in fact were growing up playing 95% of time against dudes.
      Following your theory it seems like basketball female players should be much more skilful than female tennis players.
      Its just matter of specifics of certain sport, basketball is much more athletic than tennis especially NBA. Women being generally much smaller should be playing different kind of court, I mean it will be always impossible for women to grab the ball in one hand, cock it back and then slam it with so much power. They are smaller than men and less athletic, but im quite sure on lower basket with slightly smaller ball it would be much easier for them. And people expect them to do almost as well as men on basketball court, that is simply impossible physically for them.

    • @synical7733
      @synical7733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MajicGecko PMPL I'm sure women play against men at times but they aren't playing against them constantly; professionally when they are developing their talent. Rightfully so, given they will only play against other women professionally. But this holds them back universally. The same things they do in the WNBA wouldn't happen in the NBA, not because of gender but talent level. Name somebody in the WNBA who could rival even a player like Devin Booker?
      It's the reason even in men's leagues; AAU, JV, etc, boys don't end up developing as well when their opponents talent isn't as elite. There is a difference between dropping a 100 against an unranked high school team and 20 in the NBA.

    • @synical7733
      @synical7733 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      MajicGecko PMPL And speaking on athleticism again, success in the NBA doesn't always require athleticism. There has been numerous top level and HOF players who had below average athleticism for the NBA.
      John Stockton, Steve Nash, Larry Bird, Kyle Korver, Dirk Nowitski. You could name a lot more. The reason women can't or won't find success in the NBA is because they keep playing in women's leagues.
      Even if you wanna bring up strength differences, we could have at least had a couple female guards and shooters by now.

      NonyaBusiness! You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Women view men as nothing more then mere asset generators for them. They feel entitled to whatever we as men have built for ourselves. Rather than open up their wallet, put actions to their complaints, and go to the games to support their gender, they feel men in the nba should take the money that they’ve earned and give it to them. This is the world we live in.

      It's actually much worse than that, since you have to factor in expenses. If you subtract operating costs, paying lots of coaches and staffs and gyms/arenas and practice facilities (everything except player salaries) the WNBA loses many millions. So if WNBA players' pay is simply made a split of the profits, each player would have to pay their teams many thousands to get to play for them.
      Meanwhile of course, every NBA team is worth billions, and most owners profit many millions every season, and this would be true even if they suddenly doubled every NBA player's salary.

NCAA Mens basketball plays the same amount of minutes, in two 20 minute halves instead of four 10 minute quarters, and score 68 points per game. That is unacceptable. Basketball is about scoring, I know we all love defense but seriously offense sells tickets, and the WNBA doesn't do it. They shoot for 32% from 3 point land as a league, the NBA shoots at a 36% clip from 3 and shoots the ball far more often from that range. The NBA has a pace of play average of 97. The women? 78. Katie Nolan was actually speaking closer to the truth than this TH-cam guy is. She's off about a few details, but she's generally correct. This TH-cam guy's financial analysis is bullshit.
      The point of the original broadcast is that we cannot accurately assess the claims as to whether the WNBA is losing money or not without a clear understanding of their financials, which the league is not willing to provide.
      Losing money means your revenue is smaller than your expenses, but if you refuse to publish your expenses then you could actually be very profitable while inflating your costs and pretending to operate at a loss.
      If league administrators are awarding themselves high salaries and ridiculous perks, then they could burn through the revenue fairly quickly and still claim to 'operate at a loss'. I suspect that this is what is actually happening, otherwise they would have shut down the league a long time ago.
      It should also be noted that in the economy at large, labor receives about 60% of revenue of a typical business. In the NBA, labor receives 50%. In the WNBA, it's less than 20% (we can't tell how much less because they're hiding the data, but there is evidence to believe it's significantly less).
      At any level of revenue, turning a profit or otherwise, there is no excuse of the administration to be eating 80% of revenue. Keep in mind that bringing *all 140+ players* of the WNBA up to a fair level of pay would cost a total of $14 million, which is less than the pay of a single mediocre NBA player. They are asking for very little indeed.
      Finally I should point out that the statistics released by WNBA administration do not include a number of major revenue streams including merchandising, licensing, streaming fees, etc.

    • @IncredibleMD
      @IncredibleMD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@yessum15 They literally can't even give away enough tickets to fill a WNBA game. There have been NBA games in the pandemic times with higher attendance.
      There's NO WAY they could be turning in the profit you're imagining. Estimates put the WNBA somewhere around 60 million. You could give them 100% of the profits and they'd all only make 428k. The current salary cap is about half that (215k). There's absolutely no way you could make a sizable proportion of the players into millionaires.
      The players currently make an estimated 12.8 million. That IS about 21%, but that doesn't mean the other 80% is greedy executives. The venues alone probably cost tens of millions of dollars a year, because the venues aren't going to be hosting games to make money from the gates, since they're only making 134k (before their own costs) from the average 7716 fans who attend, and that's assuming they're all buying an average priced tickets (which they're not).
      It's really nice to pretend it's just because of greedy corporate executives, but when you can't even give away 20 dollar tickets, there's a realistic cap to how much the league can be making, especially in comparison for a league that sells out venues with tickets four times as costly. There isn't even any hypothetical money in the league for the greedy execs to steal.

    • @yessum15
      @yessum15 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IncredibleMD 1) Who said anything about making the players millionaires? You're the only person suggesting that. All the players combined make less than a single mediocre NBA player makes. We're not asking to bump them to millionaires.
      2) The only request is to bump them up to a level of revenue share that is at least within the range that a typical American worker gets.
      3) Your estimates of their revenue are wildly inaccurate. Why do I say that? Because again, the league keeps that information concealed. They are only reporting revenue from 2 of something like 8 revenue streams. All merchandising, licensing, streaming, online, gambling, advertising, tv broadcasting, etc. revenue is still secret. $52 million is the minimum possible estimate one can make from available data, with the majority coming from gate sales. Realistically they are pulling in significantly more than that.
      4) I don't think you understand how arena pricing works.
      Yes. The WNBA gives away a lot of tickets. They also sell a lot of tickets. They are performing in venues larger than their audience, so they give away cheap seats. However, the events are still profitable. This is for a few reasons:
      a) they are charged less for use of the same venue as the NBA (combination of off-peak scheduling, reduced staffing at the event, and pre-existing relationship with owners). Remember: to get the arena you don't have to draw a full crowd - you only have to draw a bigger crowd than anyone else who is available that particular night. The fixed cost for arena management is high, but their variable costs are negligible. They will host anyone on that basis.
      b) When the cost of the event exceeds predicted revenue they are quick to relocate/reschedule to drop the costs such that each event remains profitable. There are a number of highly profitable sports leagues that use this same model.
      5) If the 80%+ administrative overhead cost is all totally legit why is management so adamant about not revealing how they're spending the money? Why are their expenses so mysterious? Why are they concealing the full amount of their revenue? Why are all estimates of WNBA revenue based on 3rd party speculation?
      You do understand that the first rule in the book of negotiation is to tell people you're broke, right? This is literally standard operating procedure. But common sense makes would make anyone ask how that jives with the fact that none of the league administrators have seriously suggested shuttering the doors (or even scaling back operations slightly)?
      Let me be clear:
      *You have no evidence that the WNBA is not profitable because management is concealing the full extent of their revenue and the nature of their expenses.*
      Given that they continue to expand and no one has suggested downsizing the business, the scientific approach is to treat this as a lie until contradictory evidence emerges.
      Now the only question to ask is whether it is moral to treat labor costs as variable while refusing to even glance at administrative costs.
      No. If a business is going to pay its employees so far below the going percentage rate of all American workers, then they better have some damn good evidence that they are about to shut down. We have none here.

    • @IncredibleMD
      @IncredibleMD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@yessum15 20% is FAR more than the average company spends on payroll. They give away the cheap seats AND NO ONE TAKES THE TICKETS. The fixed cost for arena management is high, and 30% capacity when 50% of the people in attendance didn't even pay for their ticket is not going to cover that.
      If your sports league can only play when no one else wants to use the stadium, it's not a very profitable sports league.
      The owner of the New York Liberty owner said that about half of their 9,000 person attendance was from free tickets. In an arena of almost 20,000. Half the league's teams saw attendance increases in that season, but the Liberty moving to the 5,000 capacity Westchester County Center alone resulted in a decrease in overall league attendance. The Chicago Sky and LA Sparks are the only teams with 2019 seasons that significantly outperformed their first season. Meanwhile, the Liberty went from 13.2k in 1997 to 2k in 2019. The Mystics went from 15.9k to 4.5k. If your fans aren't dedicated enough to make the drive from MSG to fucking WESTCHESTER, they're not dedicated at all.
      No one's suggested closing the league because look how much of a fuss people raise when women are paid only 150,000 bucks to pay highschool freshman tier basketball. You'd be the biggest sexist in sports if you suggested closing down the league just because it's never been profitable. It'd be a PR nightmare, and might even cause them to lose money from the product that actually matters.
      The NBA keeps the WNBA afloat out of charity. The owner of the New York Liberty basically said that explicitly when he was looking to sell it a few years back.He was losing money on it every year.
      If the NBA wanted the WNBA to die, all they'd have to do is sever ties with it. I'm sure the constantly airing commercials featuring WNBA players will keep them afloat. They've had marquee sponsors for the last 11 years (of a 22 year old league that had the biggest at launch support of any professional sports league). Well, except for the Atlanta Dream. I guess they'd fold.
      I can't imagine why they're having such a hard time getting sponsors. Thanks in large part to being part of a package deal with the NBA, WNBA television views went up a whopping 64% last season! That's 413,000 people they could be reaching! The League high TV ratings were 0.6. That's about equal with the Atlanta Hawks, the seventh worst performing team in the NBA.
