    Two things that really affect the sound that I don't think people talk about enough is a) Kurt was left handed (more on this after) and b) he generally started Teen Spirit (according to live videos) with an upwards stroke, which changes the tones of the muted (chicka chicka) sounds as well as the casual aggressiveness of his sound by leaning into power chords starting with higher notes/strings using the lower strings/notes as more of a bottom end, if that makes sense. Watch him play it live - and you'll see what I mean. He did that sort of thing all the time as well as varying where he was striking the chords - playing almost diagnoally from the bridge to the neck with each strum - to pull out those sorts of tones. It varies depending on his equipment/setup on any day but it's something to pay attention to as - going back to a) left handed guitarists have right brained strumming control. Hendrix did similar things in his own way. It's not the chord but how it's played with the strumming hand.

    The reason smells like teen spirit is such a hard tone to recreate is because of the hidden guitar in the chorus and post chorus (in the mix its not very audible because it matches so well) and the amount of guitar layering going on in the studio.
    btw, here is the hidden guitar kinda moved up in the mix during the chorus th-cam.com/video/P4PQ1auOfno/w-d-xo.html

    • @NirvanaGuitars
      @NirvanaGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I’ve seen that! That hidden track is so tucked away that I’d say it’s difficult more because of the possible layering and all the studio processing

    • @noahbones1221
      @noahbones1221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NirvanaGuitars true. Im pretty sure they did 2 tracks left and right on the hidden guitar (isolated hidden guitar: th-cam.com/video/CJjvUO3COwU/w-d-xo.html) from the sounds of it. Its mainly noticable in the first post-chorus where the levels are moved up a bit, and near the very end of the song. I downloaded the full stems (because for some reason the isolated track here on youtube ends too early) and found out the hidden guitar track was the track that creates the feedback at the very end of the song, on top of the pre-solo feedback.
      Sorry if thats alot but i'm a huge nerd when it comes to nirvanas tone and production as well lol

      @@NirvanaGuitars speakers might help on that one like, Vintage Celestion G12T-75s.(the ones Kurt used on nevermind.) Speakers are really integral that song in particular, you'd be surprised how much they change the tone 🙀

  • @eurekasevenwave2297
    @eurekasevenwave2297 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Pretty spot on.
    One thing, when I listen to this song though, that I never understood how either Kurt or Butch Vig got was that extremely unique high-pitched, squeaky sound when Kurt does the chky-chky rhythm part of the power chords. I've never heard a guitar sound like that before or since Nevermind, and on that particular song too. In Bloom kinda has it as well, and its a LITTLE noticeable on Drain you as well, but since SLTS actually has him muting the strings it's most obvious there.
    I've always been curious how they got that particular type of tone out of that guitar - either by Kurt's amp/pedal settings or even what equipment he modified or used for amps/speakers, or if that's a post-processing/FX rack thing. To me that's the definitive Nevermind sound.

    This was pretty spot-on with the equipment you had available, but I would suggest bending the pitch of the feedback like on the original studio track as it adds to the eeriness after the solo. You can find isolated tracks online, but the best I've seen is Rick Beato's video on SLTS where he shows the feedback and it's effects. But brilliant job - well done!

    I really think you should break down pat's tone for the in utero your, because you kinda overlook it a lot in videos. After all, the channel name is nirvana guitars (PLURAL).

      I’ve been on the search for a red Hagstrom HIIN for a long time but they are not easy to find. Can’t breakdown what I don’t have. I can breakdown the multiple Kurt Cobain guitars I have, hence the (PLURAL) name

    The distorted tones were a little too harsh and you have the rate on the small clone up too high. Otherwise sounds good. Oh and the solo was played with a neck humbucker

    Whoever painted that guitar did a terrible job. But, of course, that would make it more authentically like Cobain's because his instruments were mostly junk held together with duct tape.

      @@NirvanaGuitars Kurt never cared what a guitar looked like. As a left handed player, his choices were rather limited and he chose Fender offsets because they're so easy to mod to get whatever sound you're looking for.

    I appreciate your videos as a die hard fan of almost 40 years, but I gotta say man, your strumming and timing is typically way off. You play everything off key, too fast or slow. You should use a metronome when you play

    • @NirvanaGuitars
      @NirvanaGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are some huge critiques. I play EVERYTHING off key, too fast or slow? Everything? Gonna need some specific examples. Without trying to sound cocky, everything in this Teen Spirit cover is played like the studio version. Same key, same speed.
