    Sounds pretty damn close.. But I'm also getting that "sounds like a djent band that did a Nirvana cover" vibe from it.

      @EOR2742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      I think that's the bass. My first impression, like knee jerk reaction, was it sounded nothing like the original. Then I listened closer and I think it's just that the bass is a bit louder in the mix and is maybe missing a bit of highs and then an actual human to play it. The guitars weren't far off. A real drummer and drum kit would help too

    • @Apophis392
      @Apophis392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Evan O'Riordan I think the bass isn’t as much to blame as the tight precision in Fluff’s touch. Kurt played so loose, relaxed, all over the place dynamically and rhythmically Kurt would describe it as being “not a good guitar player” but I don’t think that’s an accurate way to describe it.

    • @horse_dog
      @horse_dog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      It’s the MIDI drums, most Djent bands will sample replace all of the drums and then time align them, making it sound very fake, cuz at that point it basically is lol

      Djent and fluff taste great together

    • @mrclarksix
      @mrclarksix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's the bass. It needs to have more depth and knock down a hair of that upper mid. And Fluff busied it up a little.

    • @fpsknifer9906
      @fpsknifer9906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Kurt used a lot of pick raking between chord changes, frequently producing string harmonics. It's this stuff played "between the notes" that really defined his rhythm playing. Most people never bother to learn these parts, since the people compiling guitar tabs never bother to include notation for the rakes.

      I don't think you need the Mesa Boogie .22 preamp and the actual cabinet to get that sound. It's pretty easy to get with amp simulation; just use a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, half stack with or without a DS-1 a distortion pedal. A Crunch amp model with the pedal could work too. It also sounds like Butch doubled Kurt's guitar to make it sound bigger on the album. I actually really dig that 'buzz saw' guitar sound of the PNW back in the day. Reminded me of lumberjacks with flannels cutting down trees.

    Hi! Kurt's live rig was definitely DS-1 and Small Clone into the Mesa Studio Preamp, with various Crown power amps into Marshalls. I'm not sure if we were that picky which drivers they were loaded with until we got Earnie Bailey on board as guitar tech. I don't think the live rig was used to record Nevermind, however. Been listening all albums of Nirvana (alot) since 1997 and can tell this is a very good 'mix'! I dont even need to dig Nevermind album out to confirm for myself that the original song does match with this. I have most off if not all songs so deep in my brain that I can easily notice a noticable difference

    Yeah dude fluff your amazing at what you do your a very talented youtuber but the elephant in the room is that you made this waaaaay too clean. Honestly letting the DS-1 do its thing would've been closer to what kurt wanted and letting the feedback come in would've been a cool humbling feature on your part because most of your guitar vids are very clean.
    The video still rocks good job!

    Kurt used V30's in his cabs for the In Utero tour. He gave his 75 loaded cabs to Pat smear. Kurt preferred the sound on the V30's. Also the combo version of the Studio 22 has a vintage speaker.

    add chorus to the bass too that’s what Andy Wallace does to every bass. Rick Beato broke down his method of mixing Nevermind not too long ago. Awesome sound tho I have been into nirvana for a while since I was 15 even have bought all the vintage pedals for our Nirvana Tribute band and I could never get that sound from back when I was 15 with either the DS1 or DS2 that he changed to later. So I tried out a lot of pedals at that time back then and I ended
    up getting the sound from a Boss Hyper metal and the older heavy metal pedals. NOT THE METAL ZONE too fizzy. Maybe those pedals had a closer sound to the speaker combo sound you figured out. Great video

    • @rome8180
      @rome8180 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the bass on the album is cleaner than the sound in this video. But it does have chorus on it. It's a cheap Yamaha rack effects box that Andy Wallace likes to use.

    Besides the music man, it was pretty good, the tone is not bad (the bass especially, it sounds amazing, for a programmed bass at least), but it doesn't sound 100% like the original, In nevermind kurt most probably used a stratocaster with a humbucker on it, he used a lot of those, especially in studio, there is even a photo of the strat he trashed on the song endless nameless,

    • @THX-1111

    Sounds really good...just an analyze I did...I brought up In Bloom to hear your track and the Nirvana track to do a side by side, and I heard this thing going on, like maybe the guitars in the original were recorded twice...but the main thing is after the intro chord progression, it goes into the chord progression that they use in the verses...on the move into the third chord (the highest pitched chord in the progression), it sound like Kirt is laying back...like doing a slide up to it or something..I did a youtube slow down...put it at 75% speed to hear it a little slower to get a better gist of what he is doing there...it's subtle, but sometimes those subtleties make a difference...and sometimes they are "Aaa...whatever..."....anyway, once again, sounds great...thanks for sharing your work with us...

    The chorusing could be Andy Wallace using a lexicon multi effects processor on a Ensemble setting that adds stereo width and detuning. He would add some 3K to the guitars as well to make them cut. The Kurt tone on nevermind is largely due to Andy Wallace. Rick Beato does an excellent Andy Wallace video as well. Awesome video and find with the speakers in the cab! This made my day

    Very cool.
    On the chorus thing, I believe Andy Wallace is a big user of the Yamaha SPX90 on the “symphonic” mode, which is kind of chorus-ish but also a bit more like a Dimension-C because it doesn’t move around in the same way. I know Wallace uses that a lot on bass as well.

    The "In Bloom" guitar sound is almost impossible to approximate unless you're using a few key pieces of gear. The one thing you're missing here is an EHX Small Clone chorus effect. Most people would overlook this, mistakenly believing that all chorus effects sound pretty much the same. You need to understand that the Small Clone is a very unique effect, which doesn't sound like any other chorus pedal on the market. With the "depth" switch up, as Kurt used it, the Small Clone has more voices than a generic chorus effect, and if placed after a gain pedal, it trails off with these harmonic overtones which were a distinct element of Kurt's guitar sound. This pedal is so unique that even EHX's own nano version of the Small Clone doesn't sound anything like the big box unit. This pedal is by far the most important piece of gear you need to reproduce Kurt's Nevermind era guitar sound.

    I'm sure someone else has pointed out that the DS-1 was only on one of the guitar tracks according to Butch. He had like 3, maybe 4 guitar tracks to the whole song. There's a video on TH-cam of him explaining the mix in loose detail. They played the Mesa, a Bassman of some year, and the Vox. I wish I knew more, but it's pretty obvious that the stacking of the amps together acted as a thickener in a couple of different ways. The multiple tones getting mixed by ear acted as a natural EQ for Butch, and also the multiple takes and the delays added made the guitar mix sound very full. I love the DS-1, and all the Boss distortions derived from it, but using one of those alone is typically not the best way to get the sound of Kurt.

    I agree about the post-processing chorus. It was quite common to add in the mix in those days. It's very prominent on the clean sections of this song. Kurt's way of using a chorus pedal was different, with a faster wobbly rate, better heard on the live shows.

    What's also different is the way he played the song. Kurt didn't use raw power chords but he hit the high notes like the 4th for F shapes and the major 3rd for A shapes. But the tone is amazing anyway.
