    Freddy nails it here when he says the originals 'hold up'.. If the originals are good, there's no need or desire to see the stories re-booted. The problem in my opinion, is that Hollywood doesn't care about that lack of desire.. they'll re-boot anything if they believe it'll turn a profit.
    Incidentally, Englund was also good as 'Willie' in the original V.

      Fuckin A! I forgot his name in that V miniseries, but he was awesome as one of the good guys of that one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Sadly, in this day and age, everything's being remade into total crap. I saw that remake only once and the only thing I could say I liked about it was that the actor who played that new Freddy was already pretty fucking cool in anything else I'd seen him in. Why can't younger generations just be introduced to the original films and taught about what makes good horror instead of dumbing down everything and softening everything up?

      He hit more with the heads on that the focus should be more on the kids rather than Freddie, at least initially. That is what the Wes Craven movies are about. The characters aren' t just eyes candies, victims, or feminist icons. Most of the films are about they trying to survive a supernatural psychopath. They are fighting with nightmare not gory dead scenes.

Like yeah there's always been a few people jerks in horror that we like to see get what's coming to them, but they ought to put a little more effort into it. Make us root for them to survive. DannySayChow Ofc Jason is replaceable. He was several times through the movies. The only actor to reprise the role was Kane and he was able to do it 3 times. So ofc the only movie where Robert was recasted was the shitty remake. And now if they were to make a new nightmare movie, Robert is too old for the role so they'll to get someone new and just so the movie can fail. That's why there hasn't been another nightmare movie. And it will remain like that forever since Robert is unable to reprise the role again.

Same with Michael's OG actor he had the walk, the frame, the way he sat up. In the zombie ones hes too fucking big for no reason. Chucky well the voice is the most iconic thing. Leatherface can be replaceable, certainly more than the others i just named

No one will ever be able to make a successful reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street or any of it's series parts because without Robert Englund, it's never going to work out. there were a few reasons it failed.
    1. people were pissed Robert Englund was not Freddy Krueger. plain and simple, Robert brought the creepiness and sarcastic sick humor to Freddy Krueger. and because he raises the bar so high, no one else could even come close to him.
    2. People were tired of the continuous remakes of the classics that don't need to be screwed with. House on Haunted Hill, Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.... we got just over saturated with remakes alot if people felt didn't need to be remade. adding an extremely popular one like NOES just added fuel to the fire
    3. they tried to make themselves different from the formula that made NOES so good. They went based of Cravens original idea- Freddy Krueger was a pedophile who got off scott free because of a technicality and the pissed off parents burned him alive. Then they tried to extend scenes and add a few. In the original because of the violence and abduction, Craven cut that out of the script and just made him a child murderer.
    4. Nancy wasn't a strong character like in the original. in the 1984 NOES, Nancy went from being a reserved, sometime shy girl to a heroic character at the end of the film. Rooney Mara did not have that quality that she brought to Nancy. Not like Heather Langenkamp did.
    I think all that unfortunately doomed it to fail.

    • @geeked-outturtlesfan4288
      @geeked-outturtlesfan4288 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt S. people who aren't die hard NOES fans won't understand the change unless they know that that was how Freddy was intended originally. if you start with that with fans who are familiar with yhe original NOES... those fans will go huh? because your now going into a different depth with Freddy. that can scare,away fans who are use to the Freddy they seen in only one incarnation ... the one on screen from 1984-1991. not many know he started out that way and pedophilia is a touchy subject because it involves hurting kids. the focus always was on hes a child murderer. pedophiles are considered even lower than killers and drug addicts in prison

    • @slayer-22
      @slayer-22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Geeked-OutTurtlesFan36 As a die hard fan myself, as long as it's written well I don't mind. People are scared of change but imo when reboots make the movie their own, while still keeping the same themes and ideas of the movie, that's when it succeeds. I loved the F13 reboot for that reason. As well as Texas Chainsaw(not the newest one, the one with Biel). Both took basic ideas, core parts of the series, and changed a few things, while keeping the basics. But they had their own plotlines, their own stories, and characters. I loved it.

    • @geeked-outturtlesfan4288
      @geeked-outturtlesfan4288 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt S. i don't mind reboots if they pay attention to the original, don't change the formula too much and are out to make a good film not just $$. the NOES remake had weak plot holes and Nancy (unlike the original) didn't become that strong character like in the original. in the 1984 film, Nancy Thompson went from being sort of introverted, quiet and scared to a tough, strong lead. this happened as she was realizing that she wasn't nuts. that Freddy was real and her mom and dads this terrible thing they did which caused Freddy to pursue the Elm Street kids.
      the one thing Texas Chainsaw Massacre did (The Jessica Biel one) was established these characters, then introduced you to the Hewitt family and finally Leatherface.... just enough to scare you. they kept with a similar premise, had a good script and kept with the creepiness of the film. the allowing very little blood to be shown (because it was like that in the original ) to spark your imagination. your fears. the sequel ls failed in that.

    Just as a fan- I think it was 3 things that held this reboot back.
    1) A New Freddy: the new guy was honestly good at times but fans didn’t want a new Krueger so he was doomed from the start
    2) Bad CGI when practical effects were needed.
    and....
    3) The new kids: Honestly the reboot has me rooting for Freddy to kill off those annoying new kids. And don’t get me started on how new Nancy isn’t even a shadow of the heroine we see by the end of original Nightmare

  • @drakocarrion
    @drakocarrion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think the biggest problem with the reboot was the whole bait & switch of having Freddy be portrayed right till the end as possibly not being the child molester he was murdered for being. I think if they had commit to his revenge being that of a wrongly executed man it would have been better, but they had to try that whole "is he/isn't he" thing for a cheap twist that everyone could see coming a mile away. The failing was in the writing. Not in the performances.

  • @LordBaktor

    My biggest gripe with the remake was that whenever there was a dream sequence they would alter the color correction and give it a whimsical look, giving you the clear indication that it was a dream sequence even if the characters did not know it. That killed all the tension and made the subsequent reveal that it was a dream pointless and utterly unsurprising.

    I saw the movie in the theaters, and I haven't seen it since. But i remember a scene in the film where out of nowhere, one of the kids says, "If Freddy kills you in your sleep, you're dead for real. "
    And I thought that was odd, because we didn't see how they came to that conclusion. They just suddenly knew somehow. Part of the fun is seeing them come to realize the game they're in and learn the rules.
    It was all just a rush job.

      Exactly! one of the best scenes from the original that still makes my hair standup to this day was when Nancy and Tina realize they have been having nightmares about the same guy. The reboot just sucked and I'm usually kind to remakes but this one was not good mainly because of casting. The actress that played Nancy had no energy from the start. In the original, I love how by the 2nd half of the film, it was mostly Nancy trying to survive Freddy on her on. The reboot split things between Nancy and her boyfriend. And like you, I haven't watched it since I saw it in the theaters, a few scenes from when I run past it when channel surfing during October but not the entire film.

    • @troyduren5079
      @troyduren5079 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That would seem a good argument, except -- save for Doctor Who (to my knowledge) -- each example is previously established in another medium. Krueger's character was entirely created onscreen by the writer/director and Englund himself. Robert Englund helped to birth Freddy by portraying him, shaping the template of the character and establishing identifying traits. Thus, Englund and Freddy are essentially inseparable. Literature leaves great room for interpretation from written word to acted portrayal, but a character created onscreen will owe its essence and existence to the actor's portrayal.

    • @troyduren5079
      @troyduren5079 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I would have liked to have seen what Jackie could have done with a better script and makeup that allowed him more facial expression/mouth articulation. Maybe if the movie hadn't been produced by Platinum Dunes? LOL! You never know: going back to your Doctor Who example, maybe we might see what various actors can bring to Freddy with the right producers, writers, director, makeup, and film studio? As you said, the movie itself wasn't that good -- I think because it lacked atmosphere. I'd like to see what James Wan could do with the franchise!!
      Edit: Oh! Check out the blinky500 channel here on YT! There are fan-made films about Freddy which act as prequels, and the actor is pitch-perfect, yet manages an edge just a tinge darker than Englund. So it's Englund-esque, yet different, so I think you might like it!

Jason, mike myers, leatherface can all be played by pretty much anyone with the right build but Freddys face is just plain iconic. Grew up with Englund's Freddy/Nightmare on Elm Street, but I honestly prefer the 2010 version. I think it was genuinely scarier and took itself more seriously, which is both a good and a bad thing, depending on what you're looking for. The opening scene from 2010 was fantastic. That being said, Englund is right that you don't really get to experience the characters before Freddy's grasp, which is a mistake. I do prefer it overall, but the original seemed to take its time.

    One of the biggest problem with some of these reboots is that they try to remake movies that were already considered to be classics (ex: Ghostbusters). If a movie is already really good, there's no need to remake it. It is possible to make great remakes like De Palma's Scarface or Carpenter's The Thing...but that's because the original works those films were based off of were just ok at best. But they would've just been forgotten in time. Nightmare On Elm Street was already considered a classic horror film, so trying to remake it is just a bad idea. The odds are high that you will only do worse, not better, than the original work.

      SummerWave: I think you are right; it is best to remake good movies, not classics. For example, they remade IT, but before that was just a forgettable TV miniseries. That's why the IT remake was good and the Nightmare On Elm Street was bad. If maybe they could remake Gremlins we could see a modern gremlin and how that would make it better.

    • @SquareNoggin
      @SquareNoggin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see your point, and it's very often the case, but I don't think it's a universal rule. I mean, it would have been fine if the reboot was worse than the originals, it just had to be good. And it could have been good (and frankly I don't think it was as bad as many seem to think it was). But Nightmare on Elm Street was already a long-running saga that already had installments that were worse than others, and some of them were even pretty shitty. At the time the fact that the original was always going to be better than any of the sequels didn't stop them from making it, and I don't think that's a bad thing either.
      I just really wanted to have the saga continue, simply because the premise for Nightmare on Elm Street is a really solid one as far as cheesy horror movies go, and it could (and I think still can) be milked for all it's worth for a new generation.
      I just hope the relative failure of the reboot doesn't stop them from trying again in the future. They just need to focus on writing a good script, setting a good ambiance and getting good actors.

    The Nightmare failed because it was a weak rehash of the original film, going so far as to recreate several scenes. It also made it painfully obvious which scenes were the nightmare whereas the original had a general surreal tone where you weren't sure what was dream or reality, and Freddy could pop up at any moment; keeping the audience off-balance. Worst of all, they made Freddy an actual pedophile as well as child killer, which I found distasteful. No disrespect to Jackie Earle Haley, but Robert Englund is the ONLY Freddy Krueger.

      I respectfully disagree. Jackie Earle Haley did an admirable job and did Robert Englund proud in filling his shoes the way he did. Yes, he's less animated and more brooding (which was some of the criticisms that I saw) but different doesn't necessarily means worse. A certain character can open to various different interpretations as in Batman, Superman, James Bond, The Joker etc.
      What Haley managed to pull off, what with the crap he was given to work with was excellent. Englund, who I mean no disrespect to as I thought he was just as great had the benefit with having a better script to work with and a director who jnew what the hell he was doing.
