My daughter wants to learn how to paint landscapes in water colour. So I decided I'd help her out by searching for videos I think she should watch. I have only watched the first 5 minutes and already I am commenting because I am so impressed. There are several reasons: 1. Unlike other tutorials, you show what you started with, without a lot of extraneous gabbing. 2. You showed the selection and mixing of the colours AND your selection of paint brush. 3. You demonstrated how to hold and use the brush as well as what NOT to do. In other words, you did not talk a lot on just the technical side (color, lighting, composition). Instead you described and demonstarted the brush stroke technique to use. 4. Your first 4 minutes showed me a recognizaable tree and you have only STARTED. Your video may be almost 4 years old, but it one I am going to suggest to anyone who is a beginner and wants to learn how to paint water colour landscapes. Thank you.
I love how he explains what other find obvious. It’s those things that make him so much better as an instructor. I keep saying “Ah ha!!” I am so excited I have found his videos!!!!
Thank you so much for your comments! If you want to have a look at my free content on my website you can click here and sign up for a free membership. I have followed Geoff for years, first on SAA then on TH-cam. I like his tutorials and his choice of subjects. I am now retired and have the time to pick-up where I left off, with my painting. Thanks Geoff
I love how you use the grainy paper to make the tree. That's ingenious! That makes a beautifully realistic tree. I admire you for giving away your secret to how you make your tree look so realistic. Well done, Mr. Kersey! The 240 people who gave your technique a thumbs down don't appreciate how beautiful your technique or we'll never know why they gave it a thumbs down. Their loss!
By far the most helpful video I've been able to locate. Basic, simple but complete. Wonderful! I'm looking forward to more from your channel. Thankyou .
man, i wish i could show you the one i drew before i googled how to do this, and the one i just did with your video...night and day! and everybody thought the first one was good lol, thank you so much
Thank You Jane - I have an online website where I release tutorials as well as tips and tricks videos, you can check it out at www.watercolourlandscapes.co.uk Hope you enjoy!
Best video I've seen so far. Just loved it. Thanks for explaining so well why the light shade needs to go all over the tree and then top it with the darker value. I'm a beginner and that cleared things up a lot. Can't wait to practice.
I have really been struggling, everything ending up in the trash. I came across this video, gave it a go, and my desire to paint has been restored. THANK YOU.
For months I have been seeing many tutorials about watercolour, recently about landscapes and trees. You, sir, are amazing teacher! So many great tips, I love your communication style, I'm excited to see all your other videos and wait for more.

Hello Geoff, just want to say thank you for your brilliant tutorials! I've struggled with my trees, as it's been many many years since I picked up a brush, but at last I've found someone who has shown me how to paint trees that I want to paint! I'm in my 70s now, and your voice is so calm and relaxing that I feel confident now that I really can paint a tree that I like!
Thank you linda! I do have an online website where I release a new tutorial every two weeks as well as plenty of tips and tricks tutorials should you want to give it a go check it out at www.watercolourlandscapes.co.uk
Hi, hope you doing great right now. Am actually nothing at paintings and this is the first time i tried this stuff, and your YT is quite help me a lot to do more. Thankyou, sending regards from Indonesia
you brought me back to life today.. thank you so much. I used to love to paint and have won many competitions.. and got so engrossed in academics that completely lost touch of art. Working 14 hrs a day, first time in many years I feel alive and fresh! Eternally grateful to you
What a great teacher. He is easy to listen too, and I also love as well how he mixes his paint on the fly too, as another had mentioned earlier in a comment. Why do why like such a thing as that? I think it is because, he is just a very genuine guy and authentic. As for myself, I'm so wager to paint that I'm always mixing my paints as I go!
Your voice is very soothing, your tips are so helpful, and your trees are fantastic! I’ll be coming back for more lessons if you have others. You definitely have a way of taking the nervousness out of it for me if I mess it up. Thank you!

I just LOVE painting trees, mountain scenes, water scapes (lakes, streams, ocean) - ANYthing in nature, really, including wildlife, but have had a hard time finding tutorials online that explain the sequence & timing of each step - and really have had a hard time getting my pine trees to look less flat (like a comb) as well as achieving that depth without getting my colors all muddled. After watching your video (which happened to come up in my feed), I Subscribed! I'm going to try some trees right now using a few different water color sets while keeping in mind; 1. Mix your colors first 2. Wet the area with clear water 3. Start at the center of the tree & work your way outward 4. Use the side of the paintbrush (not the tip) to scumble in the color for texture & spacing 5. Lay down the lightest color first, then the darker tone on the shadow side, then touch in the highlights using the tip of a smaller round brush 6. Fill in gaps with suggestions of the trunk all the way around and up 7. Touch the base of the foliage where it meets the trunk with a bit of main tree color to blend over the top of the trunk so the trunk appears to be behind the foliage. THANK YOU! VERY Helpful! :)
I feel like my blood pressure dropped watching this guy teach water painting. Real life experience behind the brushes, colors, and palettes. Another Boss Ross, but with water painting, lol. Good job, Geoff Kersey.
You are so good at teaching. Thanks 🙏 I really want to learn more from you. A warm hello from Vietnam. Hope you and people around the world will be safe and peaceful during the hard time.
You are such a great teacher not because you’re talented (ofc you’re talented no doubts) but because you explicitly reveal what to be done and what not to be done and why without hiding anything ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Jayashani, I have an online tutorial website at www.watercolourlandscapes.co.uk should you want to find some of my other tutorials. Thank you for your kind words.
I’m looking at your art around the room and how you relate to a beginner with your instruction. Wow your generous in how you speak to a untrained artist. I’m grateful for your reasoning, speed, and clarity. Wonderful! You make me think perhaps I can paint a tree like you. Humn, my potential has exploded. Ha ha ha. Upon execution I suspect oncoming humility. Thank you.
My first effort to enter the world of water color and this instruction captured my attention. He made the concept very exciting, interesting, and encouraging for a beginner in his seventies! Thanks Geoff Kersey.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I’ve just started watercolor and going from video to video learning how to make more water less paint and more paint less water wet dry paper to say it’s a lot to take in s an understatement. Thanks for your time and knowledge I look forward to attempting these trees in today’s lesson. Thank you again.

I'm a total beginner who is trying to teach himself the "big-brush" or "fast-and-loose" style of watercolor popularized by the late Ron Ranson. Hence, I have watched many, many videos on various aspects of watercolor painting. Geoff, this is absolutely, positively the best tutorial on trees that I have EVER seen! Moreover, I think the vast majority of your techniques will "translate" well into my work with the 2" goat-hair hake brush (supplemented by a 1" flat brush and #3 rigor). Thank you VERY much for your clear, logical explanation and demonstration.
