I totally agree regarding the auto focus issue. Here’s the thing. Many of the high profile big ticket features are creating problems to fix while crippling your film making skills. Huh? You say. OK. Autofocus means get your hand off the lens. It also means leave the in-frame story telling to the camera. So now you are holding the camera at its sides introducing shakes. So now you need stabilisation. At this point you have abdicated from making most of the critical decisions in your directorial role, relegated to watching the camera get it right or not. Suddenly you are not even in the moment of the shot. With the BM, Left hand on lens controls focus and variable ND. A long heavy lens like the sigma 18-35 acts like a stabilisation lever. Right hand on camera grip, all other controls. Use a strap, pull it taught, steady hand held shooting and you are DRIVING the shot. A few months practice and you can nail any shot. You will feel yourself growing as a filmmaker. No longer someone watching a camera.
You guy are awesome! Your rig is the simplest I can afford now. This gives me a lot of hope. I also would like to learn better how to move with my camera, or how to make good movements, Thanks for the video
I attend Los Angeles film school and they recently sent me the BM. I love it coming from the SonyA7iii. You just gave me so much motivation my guy. I was nervous at first switching over.
I think this is absolutely a solid mentality. It’s so easy to get distracted when you’re doing multiple things. Now that i am exclusively a gaffer it’s so much easier to have the right tools just for lighting and measuring light instead of having grip gear, cameras, editing software etc. Specialize! I think we are afraid to because we think we will lose clients but i have found for every client i “lost” i picked up an even better client that want me for a very particular skill set. Keep going, videos lookin crispy.
I have a G85 and still want to upgrade to the blackmagic 4k despite how it is lol. Unless BM actually make a direct MFT sequel to the 4k then I'm still getting the pocket. Hopefully theyre still updating it...
