Larry Cano was the founder of El Torito Restaurants and it was in 1954, but the location of that first restaurant was in Encino, CA. He had his own restaurant in Newport Beach called Canos and another restaurant in Laguna Beach called Las Brisas, which was a favorite of mine.

I still have my Circle Jerks ticket from when the Huntridge collapsed. I was 15 at the time and had been to many great shows before that.
Since I live in a suburb of Phoenix, and I am 76 years old, I have been to Vegas many times starting around 1968! I love seeing a glimpses into its past and the changes that have occurred over all those years. Some for the better, but many for the worse! Thank you for one of several tours that you have given us, and hopefully maybe when you have to go into Vegas on business away from your storied compound, a few more.

While working Uber a few years ago, I gave a ride to an out of town visitor beginning at the Huntridge Tavern. He was touring old dive bars in Las Vegas
I dropped him off at “The Stage Door” casino at Battistas’
In 7 years of rideshare driving I have seen all of the locations you showed us.

Was hoping to see the Golden Steer Restaurant which opened in 1958. The Rat Pack and all the big stars ate there in its hay day. Much history to see inside. Ate there once and had the best steak ever! Cory Big Hoss Harrison was right next to us with a female friend. Though Cory was so thin and gaunt looking I almost did not recognize him. Hope he’s well and okay.

Well, that was fun! We moved to Vegas in 1954, from South Dakota, when I was 2 years old. I lived there until I went to college. It was fun to see some of the old places. I remember when it was quite a drive to get to Henderson. Every once in a while we got to go out to dinner. We went to The Swanky Club out on the Boulder Hwy. Even Tule Springs was a drive out into the desert. I remember going to the Huntridge theater on Saturdays. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Sarah.
I have great memories of growing up in Vegas in the '60's and early '70's. Things started going downhill (traffic, air pollution, crime) so I left for good in 1980. I took a pass on my 50th high school reunion this year as I knew it would be too strange and depressing. All the cool stuff has been torn down.
My wife and I were married in this building back in 1996. At that time, it was on the grounds of the Hazienda Hotel and Casino. When they demolished the hotel and casino, they moved the Little Church of the West across the street to its present location. I assume it is its same location, I moved from LasVegas in 2003. Great videos, I enjoy seeing your adventures.
Yours is probably one of the longest lasting marriages started in that church.

We got married in the The little Chapel of the West ten years ago. Had a long roadtrip trough tree states, and ended a perfect holiday getting married in Las Vegas. We watch your videos and dream of going back. Cheers from Norway! ❤️
Was there in September and went to the Mormon Fort and later had lunch at the Ranch House which had excellent steak sandwiches. The inside of the restaurant was full of "Old Hollywood" autographed pictures on the wall along with other memorabilia from that era. Top shelf.
Love a little day drankin with the Huss!! I love fancy & special cocktail lounges but once in a while ya just need an old boy tavern!! Where PBR, Hamm's or Miller High Life is on tap!! 🍺😂

OMG! The Palomino Club, where old show girls go to die! In the 1980's while 'TDY' at Nellis AFB I witnessed an extraordinary rendition of the Cookie Monster Song there.
Being a kid in the 60's, the Strip Casinos were miles apart. Back then the center of town was Fremont Street. All kids were banned from the slot area. Parents left us outside, on the curb, so there would be a bunch of kids sitting outside guarded by a couple of Goons. They were really nice to us, though. When one of us had to use the restroom, another Goon would come and walk us there and back. They would sometimes bring us a glass of water, too. I remember sitting outside of Four Queens with my sisters, desert all around.
We would sometimes sleep in the station wagon in the desert behind Circus Circus. I'm pretty sure where we were is now part of I-15.
I love these things. I was in Las Vegas once, and frankly that’s enough for me. BUT, I always like knowing the local history, and you have a a great way of bringing us along on the tour.
@Marty's 4x4 that’s fair, and accurate. Yes, I saw the strip and that was enough of that. Also, Red Rock Canyon, which was nice.

My dad went to Las Vegas high school in the 30's. My parents were married in the Little Chapel of the west in 1946. I was born there in 1949 & lived there for 51 years.

I like the history lessons about Las Vegas! I used to travel to Vegas for conventions as an association manager since 1976. It has changed but the parts I see have not changed much. Caesars Palace has grown a lot since I stayed there in 1978. Thanks!

i grew up by that water tower. i used to walk to school by it. it was wooden back in 1971. our family and the neighbors sold the well rights and everyone got water piped in.
Wow that’s the oldest neighborhood I can remember. The schools were Helen j Stewart Roy Martin and Halle Hewetson ? Stewart market the old railroad workers houses by bonanza and eastern nice memories
Many years ago when in my early teen years, our family used to have a friend we'd stay at when we came to visit Las Vegas. She lived in a huge home that was built in the 1940's. Her husband was a well know Accountant for a big casino/hotel. I remember walking down this long hall and gawking at the many photos she had hanging there. Why was I gawking? Because in those photos were prominent mafia members, the Rat Pack members, politicians, and Elvis! Pretty wild, huh? Sadly, she has passed a number of years ago. She was a classy lady who would tell us funny stories about all those people remembered on the hallway wall.
Any whooo, Sarah, I loved this video. For as many times I'd been to LV, I had never heard of its entire weird and wacky history.

After I paid you a visit last year I drove down the strip on my way back East. I had a few glimpses of the inhabitants and got the hell away pronto. Yikes! Interesting Howard Hughes story: he was a big aviation guy as most of us know. He used to own an old propeller plane call a Lockheed Lodestar. The plane passed from owner to owner over the years but was kept in original condition. A few years ago the current owner was refreshing the upholstery on the seats in back and in the process discovered a woman’s bra under one seat. If I recall it was the same size as the ones Jane Russel wore back in the day. The stories that plane could tell !!!!
Howard Hughes of Hughes aircraft was also known to keep a years long supply of banana ice cream in the freezer of the hotel that he lived in.
I am 76 years old and live in Thailand with my wife, two teen daughters and my wife's grandson. I saw Vegas first when I was around 8 years old. These days, one sister lives in Arizona and one in North Las Vegas. When my daughters were 8 & 10, they, with their much older brother, visited my mother and Sis in Vegas... Once again our histories cross paths...
There's just one little known fact that The Wonder Hussy left out. The tiny cereal boxes that were found in Howard Huges' house were 'Fruit Loops'....hehe

My first stay in Vegas was at the Westgate in 1967 and made a nice living as a drummer in the 70s until 1984 when I bought a beach bungalow in California sold it in 2015 for 700k and retired to Wisconsin found you during Covid and a devoted follower

Had to stop the video to go take a dance down memory lane - did not know the LVHS connection - way cool to see that! (And just when I thought I couldn't be surprised anymore lmao). Loved the whole video - Las Vegas is a contradiction in the way it manages to (somewhat) combine the old with the ultra-new, and keeps coming up with different ways to sell the concept. Never been there, but would have loved to have had the chance during the close-down (I'm not a big fan of crowds in any shape or form). Thank you, Sarah, for the trip down Memory Lane. I pretty much grew-up in Vegas from the early-'70s on into the '80s, and Old Vegas was pretty much still alive, even then, and all of those places you visited on your grand tour were pretty much my jam (excepting that I went to VoTech, and not Vegas High).
Early on, I used to go to the Saturday monster movie matinees at The Huntridge; the Vegas Vampire would be running up and down the aisle trying to scare all us kids. Later on, I saw X, The Ramones, Afghan Whigs, etc., there, when it was a concert venue. That place is so wasted just sitting there not in use. Be that as it may, regarding the oldest continuously running restaurant in Vegas, I think it just might be Hugo's Cellar at the Four Queens. My dad used to get comps for that place, alot, and it was about the fanciest place in which to eat in town. Good as it was, I was more about the less hoity-toity places to eat, like El Burrito, Tommy's Ribs, and the Alpine Village. Sadly, they're all gone, now, but Hugo's seems to still be rolling along. It's like the neverending restaurant.
Anyway, I've already rambled long enough, and will finish by saying how much I dig your channel. You are extremely talented at what you do and never boring. A natural entertainer and raconteur. Keep on keepin it real, lady.❤

This episode is so perfect. The restaurant is on main street. Unless they closed it when they did road work but I think it's still there. Best chili rellenos ever lol
Yum!!! I love making chili rellenos, but talk about time consuming!. I make the chili sauce (where you steep dried roasted chilis, herbs, etc, and eventually blend the chilis into a smooth sauce) the day BEFORE to make it easier. Between roasting poblanos, steaming and pealing the skins off, grating fresh oaxaca (or whatever cheese you prefer).. Then blending a fluffy egg white mixture and carefully coating each stuffed pepper in the mixture.. It's tricky! Each egg-white coated stuffed pepper gets a super light dusting of flour/masa/cornmeal. Then either use toothpicks, or freeze them slightly to keep them securely closed while they're being fried. . I use canola oil, but not a ton of it. You use a large shallow pan large so you have room to CAREFULLY flip each stuffed pepper after the first side is done. Heat up the chili sauce and place it in the bottom of the dish.. add the peppers and more cheese.. or chopped cilantro... or chili sauce.. or sour cream.. anything or none of it.. 😂 I'll try to make a batch of them and run them over to you! 😄
Very interesting! The Las Vegas Academy is an awesome Performing Arts school! I remember when they became an arts school in the 90s. I was in my 20s and wishing I was young enough to go there or that I might have a kid attend there. My Wish was granted this year when my son started his freshman year in tech theater. It is such an fantastic learning institution. Thank you for all of your work on these videos. It’s truly appreciated!
That is also a beautiful old school building. The colors of the bricks make it more dramatic and southwestern looking. It reminds me of some of the older high schools in Los Angeles, like Hamilton High and L.A. High School.

@@ZackfromNoHo It really is beautiful. They have added newer buildings on campus but I love the architecture of the original. Sadly, it’s not accessible, and I cannot easily get inside because I use a walker.

Excellent. It will be a senior (65) memory test to see how many I remember by the next time I'm in Vegas. I've already forgotten where most of the hot springs are, but I'll be on the lookout for turtles, spyplanes, Mars rovers, and 4Runners.
I got married at the Little Church of the West and it's lasted 32 years so far, despite everyone's prediction it was doomed from the start. ;)
