- Wheeler Peak is the highest point at Great Basin National Park in Nevada - join my wife and I on our successful summit hike to the peak. Though tough to reach, this is often an overlooked National Park among those in the National Park Service. 4.1 miles each way with an elevation gain of 2,961 feet. Summited: July 3. 2020.

I hiked this when I was younger back in 1957. It was great to see this video which reminded me of my hike and the beautiful view from the top. I am not able to do it again so this was great.

I want to congratulate you!!! I did this hike in Sept. 2019. I luckily didn't have the snow to deal with. Instead, once I got to the ridge, I had the pleasure of frigid, hurricane force winds. It kept my mind off the altitude and the awful pitch of the "trail" up to the summit. I used the Summit Trailhead thinking that maybe it would be less elevation gain. That stretch was a beautiful flat-like walk thru the trees. It was one of the most memorable adventure days in my life.

Great video and congrats on making the summit. I was at Great Basin Park two months ago and decided not to hike at altitude. When i was 20 years old I basically ran up and down Mt. Shasta in California with 3 friends in a short day. Now it is 51 years later, 50 lbs heavier and triple by-pass surgery last year. I just can't make these high level, strenuous hikes anymore. I go up to about 9,000 feet and stay on easier trails, so I am glad to see the view from Wheeler peak via your video.

Great job to hike all the way up to the summit! The peak is so beautiful. I agree this NP is underrated, maybe due to its remote location and not being convenient to make a trip plan.

Ah awesome you did a video on Wheeler Peak. That is an epic hike and I did that too, but I got altitude sickness near the top because of the altitude. If I did that again I would carry a can or two of sports oxygen such as Boost Oxygen. The views are one of the best being up there with Mt Moriah on one side and way into Utah on the other side. It can get crazy windy up there too.

Hey, Clara - clearly IMHO an underrated NP!
He's right. The upper trailhead is slightly longer than the lower trailhead (The Alpine Lakes trail), which is adjacent to the Wheeler Peak Campground. Still, I recommend the upper trailhead. The reason being that the upper trailhead is around a few hundred feet higher in elevation than the lower, and that first mile on the upper to where the two trails intersect is relatively level. Once you've been on the trail several hours and still face that steep slog of the last 1000 feet (close to where they are on their break at 5:40), having earlier cut off a few hundred feet of elevation could make a difference in one's energy level. There have been times on the summit that I've looked back down the trail and seen discouraged hikers turn around. Really, use the upper trailhead for access. That's why it's signed as it is. No criticism of the OP is intended; kudos to all who complete the hike. Thanks for visiting our little piece of paradise.
When I went to Great Basin, I did Bristlecone and Glacier Trail. It was a beautiful hike. I might do Wheeler Peak one day because I love a good summit hike! Beautiful video that brings back memories.

Whenever I get to a summit of a mountain I always like to look for the elevation survey marker. For some reason that always makes the hike feel complete.

We did the trail up Pike's Peak when we were children....once above timberline, it's a challenging walk. I could feel it again, watching your video. Beautiful hike!!

Absolutely stunning views, that was amazing and a nice steep 8 mile round trip, yep a piece of cake.....lol! Great place to stop for lunch and a 'brew with a view' springs to mind. The last half mile looked a killer but so worth it when you got there to the summit, breath-taking views and a great effort from you both! Cheers Alan

At age 54 I can still handle going up those scree and rock fields, but it's getting really iffy coming back *down* them, ha. Only been to this park once, but it's easily in my top 10. Absolutely loved the feeling of isolation we found there. We did the caves and the Bristlecone trail, with a detour to Teresa Lake, plus a gorgeous sunrise from the Mather viewpoint where for over an hour we had the pullout completely to ourselves. Can't do that at very many parks any more. Great video.

I checked out Great Basin for the first time this year and it was fantastic.
Y'all were lucky though. I ran up Wheeler twice while I was there and the wind was INSANE both times
Running up that beast... impressive feat! Yeah, heard the wind could be pretty nasty! Saw all those wind shelters near the peak.
There is no hurry. Plan your day by hours of daylight. I just lay down and sleep. Relax.
I take an umbrella in summer. Mount Baden Powell in CA is like 6800 foot gain.
These mountains are big. All of them. When you get up on them huge.
White Mountain CA Bristlecone is the easiest big one but miserable 7 miles approach. Love Great Basin but it is remote.

Beautiful area. Man, need to get into the mountains soon. We had a steep altitude ascent in Columbia a few years back, hiking the El Cucoy circuit. Lost my appetite for a few days, but worth every step. Never heard of Great Basin, so thanks for the heads up!

Randy, Wow, a part of Nevada that I have never seen. I have a lot of experience at high altitudes and you were very smart to take it slow. Even driving to the top of Pikes Peak, Colorado or Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii is difficult, and requires a slow pace and stopping to acclimate. It was very fun to watch you and Julie on this hike, I could have watched for another 30 minutes! I bet you noticed a better feeling in the way down as you got below 11,000 feet. This is out there but Great Park. I go in from Cedar City Utah. But main way is from NV. Beaver also has a road out. LOTS OF ANIMALS out here.

Beautiful hike! I am a chemistry teacher and I use Wheeler Peak as an example of a high elevation when we discuss gas laws. It is tough hiking at high altitudes. I hope to visit again someday. This summer, I will be doing my second trip to Glacier with my wife. We will be driving from Ohio so I need to find some interesting places to visit on the way there. As always, I enjoy your videos.

Thank you for the great videos. We live in Salt Lake City UT and enjoy hiking. I have a decent fear of cliffs and always have a hard time figuring out if a hike is going to be too much for me. The delicate arch trail in arches national park got me pretty close to the panic line (hung out on the large rocks looking at the arch but not brave enough to walk over to it with my husband). It would be awesome if you could include information on if a trail has triggers.... Mine sits right around tripping and falling anywhere but forward is certain death or permanent loss of mobility

Great video. Looks like a beautiful hike. As I watched I wondered why you two don't have good sturdy hiking boots. It would make the hiking, and especially the scrambling, much easier and safer. Way less chance of a sprained or broken ankle plus better protection if a rock rolls into your foot.
Hey Bill, great question! I have all kinds of foot problems (mainly on the left side) and boots just don't work for me. After this hike I bought some $150 trail runners and even needed to return them. Brooks shoes seem to work the best to alleviate the pain I can experience. I've grown up in gym shoes so I like them, but I am concerned for ankle support. Not sure how a brace will work. Thanks for the concern!
I'm not a podiatrist but I have custom fit ski boots for 35 years and have dealt with a myriad of foot problems over the years. I have also done work on skates, shoes and various types of boots. I don't obviously know what kind of problems you experience but it may not be a bad idea to visit a reputable boot fitter at a shop in a major ski resort. You have to ask around for who that would be as really experienced boot fitters are few and far between. And if you get a suggestion to visit a store called Surefoot don't go. They're a chain. There's a reason they're known as Sorefoot in the industry. Sometimes we can make modifications to foot wear to help although not nearly like we can to a ski boot. My first and foremost suggestion is a custom footbed to support and stabilize the foot. I've worn them in my shoes since the early 90's as I have a trashed ankle and without support standing and walking for long periods becomes painful. As a side note, after all those years my feet actually measure about a half a size smaller than they used to. I would say to come see me but I no longer fit boots and don't have access to the tools I would need. I don't know if someone like me could actually help but it may be worth a shot and a custom footbed can only help.

Thats some hike bud. We only had time for a visit to the caves when we visited back in 2015 but loved what we saw of the park. Didn't you guys stay in Ely while in the area? How was that? Yeah, the Ely sites were booked for the April trip - since we rescheduled for the end of June we camped out. Edited the trailer for the CO/UT footage today. Really epic stuff! Have a great week!
"It's not Mount Everest." Well, that's certainly true but the elevation can hurt. Most people go from sea level to the summit of Everest in like 48 days. You went from sea level to 13000ft in 48 hours.
Glad there's still some folks on TH-cam that have some respect for safety. For us (like I mentioned in the video) the key was a controlled pace and knowledge of the physical symptoms of altitude sickness.
I went to Great Basin for the first time back in October. I hiked to the top of the rock glacier below the peak. We didn’t attempt the peak. I’m going back early summer ish to do the peak

Randy, I'd say that black socks are way more prone to cause elevation sickness than anything else....just saying. Glad you and Julie went to places we'd never see because we simply do not enjoy hiking very much. We are out every weekend though. Keep up the great work in 2021 and take care of your good family. AAA! That looked like a pretty strenuous hike but with a definite reward at the end. Also probably a very long day with all the camera work too. It paid off greatly though.
Great Basin has been a park I am intrigued with and have been contemplating trying to work it into various trips. Just has never worked out due to its remoteness and schedule. I do have a question for you. I am in midst of tentatively planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton next June. I have about 2.5 weeks to work with so there is some extra time for additional parks. Great Basin came to mind. Based on any of your research with this park, do you think Wheeler Peak would be accessible mid-June? I see that you were there early July and am wondering if it was just a heavy snow pack last year or that is the norm with the snow. I don’t think I would want to make the trek to the park if Wheeler Peak wasn’t an option during our visit.
Hard to say, Michael as the snowfall/temps change year-to-year. You're talking only a couple weeks before we were there. For us, most of the snow had melted and I was fine hiking in a sweatshirt or two.
@@AmericasParks thanks for the reply. Was just curious if you stumbled upon anything in your research as general rule of thumb for this area. Could always plan to hit this park and check in as the date gets closer. If it is a no-go, could always detour to Utah. Not like there is a shortage of things there.

I found walking on that loose rock to be very tiring. Especially going downhill.
Yeah, going downhill is always harder for me too.
Just did a New Years road trip to do some amazing slot canyons in Utah and had initially planned to do Wheeler Peak but upon further research mid-trip, found out that in winter the road is closed at Upper Leeman Creek Campground and that would've almost doubled the distance (look at the map @1:43) and while I was up for the challenge, we decided it would be time better spent going to Jackson Hole on the way back to Socal instead lol
Probably a good call... even though that would have been an epic hike! GBNP is wonderful, but even in the summer it takes some effort to reach. Glad to hear you caught some slots in UT - some of my favorites!
