    All Tesla models unfortunately suffer from limited rear visibility. On my Model S, I quickly got used to keeping the rear camera on at all times. The wide angle view is actually perfect to avoid blindspots and wish all manufacturers did this. Looks like on the Y you actually get a feed from 3 cameras. Very nice.

    I own a Model Y Long Range. I love it, but it has 3 issues that are close to deal breakers for me, and I’ve figured out workarounds for 2 of the 3, but they’re expensive workarounds. Worth sharing with others who may view this video since they were not covered:
    1. The blind spot monitoring isn’t there, and what was shown in this video doesn’t work reliably. Tesla claims they have blind spot monitoring as part of Autopilot on their website. But they don’t. A light on the side mirror doesn’t cost much, but they choose to omit that. The surrounding cars is not really reliable, and I’ve had numerous times where it didn’t show a car there, but I did have one in my blind spot, because a car accelerated into my blind spot. I indicated and started moving, and only then did I get an audible warning and the car prevented me from moving, but that’s really not a pleasant experience, and it can be solved very cheaply. Considering that a 2017 study found that blind spot monitoring reduces crashes by 11%, this is a big omission by Tesla. Of course there are many workarounds, from looking over your shoulder, to getting old fashioned blind spot mirrors to stick on, or using your side mirrors only for blind spot, and your rear view camera for everything else. I don’t have a workaround for this one. I’ve switched to driving using my side mirrors primarily for blind spot and main mirror for everything else. It’s an adjustment, but I’ve gotten used to it.
    2. Lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Tesla fan boys and fan girls claim that Tesla’s infotainment system is the best in the business, and in many respects it is. But if you use anything but Spotify, like Apple Music, or Audible, or use Waze, you have to control these from your phone, which introduces unnecessary risk. If you are very reliant on one of these, I wouldn’t believe the apologists who say you’ll get used to it. I’m not used to it 4 months in, and I’m resorting to installing a screen from a company called Hansshow (not exactly well known) to get this functionality. It seems to be pretty good. But it will cost me around $800 installed and I’d say it’s not the prettiest thing around.
    3. Even with 19” wheels, the Long Range version of the Tesla has a very firm ride, that on rough roads, can be really uncomfortable. This car needs adjustable air suspensions like those found on the Model X, Model S, and at a minimum optional on every competing ICE SUV/CUV. If you live in an area with a lot of potholes, etc, take it for a long test drive first and drive those roads to make sure you’re ok with this. Otherwise, a company called Unplugged performance sells some apparently very good adjustable suspensions that can fix most of this. They cost $3k before installation. I’m going to get them, but waiting to see if that company has installers in my area, since the company is based in CA, and I’m in Maryland.

    • @simonp8088
      @simonp8088 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve heard a lot about the rough suspension. I drove the model 3 in 2020 and found it to be rather bumpy. The suspension is one of the reasons I’m a bit put off from the teslas. I had a car back in the day with brutal suspension and: never again lol

    • @t1328
      @t1328 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I had two weeks of several severe phantom braking occurrences while only using adaptive cruise control, aka Autopilot, with FSD turned off completely. In each case I was on the highway driving around 60, towards the sun. In each case this came close to causing an accident, and in 2 of them i had 3 kids in the car. So I’m done with the Model Y. I traded it in and got a great trade in. Got a regular ICE SUV instead, the Genesis GV70. It will cost me more in gas, but I can’t drive a car where I feel like software updates can cause this kind of issue to occur. It is simply too dangerous.

      @@t1328 wow, that sounds really scary, bro! i don't blame you for doing what you did. i'm wondering if all manufacturers are eventually heading towards what tesla is doing, though. they're all gunning for self-driving crap. it's not crap if it all works perfectly, but in this transitionary period i expect we'll have a lot of problems :(

      Have to disagree on 'Blind Spot' warnings, works well if you use turn signals, even w/out have to train yourself to glance at monitor for Orange vehicles, at least on new Model 3… Good luck with Tesla interacting w/ Apple & Android, asked about when ordering , was told some ' Superior Vertical Integration' crap, Elon doesn’t want to rely/interact with anyone else, never mind have them poking around in the electronics , don’t blame him as much as I loved it on my Pacifica…

    Just FYI, I've had my MYLR for 10 mo. now. I live in the midwest and winters can be very cold. You mentioned estimated range vs. real range. Based on many many miles driving in the cold on both long distance drives (1600+ miles round trip) and shorter city drives, that real range is closer to 60%. I've driven the same route in mid-summer and mid-winter and the real range is night-n-day different. The same superchargers that I rolled into at 30% in summer, I was limping into at 5% in winter. For winter driving, I learned quickly to assume 50% of the range the car says you will get. If it says I will be at 30% upon arrival, I am comfortable with that and I know I will still have likely 15%. But, in winter, I will not leave a SC unless it estimates AT LEAST 30% remaining upon arrival. In the summer, I have actually done better than the estimate. So I am good with a 10-15% remaining estimate. Only in summer though. Just throwing that out there. Range Anxiety is real in the cold weather. Not so much in warm weather.

    • @leaflover3497
      @leaflover3497 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Winter driving in an EV can be a drag. I had a first generation Nissan Leaf before I bought my Model Y. The Leaf in the cold was miserable. The range plunged so much that I couldn’t turn on the heat. The Y is much better and stays warm with more than enough range. The only problem I have had driving in cold weather was one time when it was snowing hard. The cameras which control the autopilot got covered up and we couldn’t use cruise control on the highway. Probably wouldn’t have used it anyway but the message kept coming up on the screen which was kinda annoying.

  • @DrGamble28
    @DrGamble28 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video but some of the battery info is off. Elon tweeted about this to clear up the rumors. They say charge to 90% because regen braking only works 90% or lower. So it's an efficiency thing. Also, you are supposed to go down to 20% to maximize charge rate (might not matter if you charge occasionally at home). Batteries will degrade either way so going to 100% isn't going to make much of a difference on a battery this large over 8+ years

      I have the Performance Model 3 because the crazy lease deal I got made it cheaper per month than the LR 🤯
      In the UK the LR has a current list price of £47k and the Performance is £60k. There's no way it's worth that. Also the LR with smaller wheels and standard suspension is more comfortable and has a longer range. The Performance performance is hilarious/astonishing, but it's of no real use day to day. The LR performance is plenty and the other advantages outweigh the increased performance. I'd be tempted to pay the £1200 to increase the acceleration which is an option to buy through the touchscreen at any time.

    The Tesla expenses are most of why I haven't jumped to being a Tesla owner. I have to keep that $1,200 fee in mind whenever I look at the pricing (it can get better or worse with used ones). Another reason is the monthly payments on a new 2022 Tesla are out of my price range by a couple hundred (though if desperate I could probably find a second job). Also, I could finance a used one but I feel like I'd regret not getting the color (blue) I want, not getting the range/AWD I want, or miss out on modern hardware features (like heated wheel).
    Right now, I have a 2015 Nissan Leaf S and that has 82ish (depending on weather) claimed range which is realistically like 60 miles, so I'm sure literally any Tesla would feel nice for range. I'm just worried I cave to spend my entire spare income on a Tesla and realize I would've really wanted that extra hundred miles range or whatever else. I don't have GPS; I have to use my phone or (likely) buy a Garmin to slap on the windshield. I mainly just commute to work a few miles, so I'll just have to enjoy my Leaf however long I can make it last--and hopefully save up enough to finance a Tesla and maybe pick up a 2021 used Model 3 (or whatever seems best to me for hardware in 5-10 years).
    Side note, I love the comprehensive list of accessories you recommend in the description. Great video overall. 👍
