The cheap trick to get a stuck oil filter off is pinch a screwdriver through it and crack the tightness. Best way to avoide it happening again is don't over tighten the oil filter.
I purchased a 2017 Sportage with the 2.4 engine a couple of months ago I recently noticed the oil light blink a couple of times when I turned a corner. I checked the oil level and it was 2 1/2 quarts low. I was wondering if you’ve noticed high oil consumption since you made this video? I noted several folks complaining about this on various forums. Thanks!
Better tip for installing a new oil filter: Turn it until the seal makes contact with the engine, then tighten it ONLY 1/2 a turn more. It will still seal up, but you won't have to fight with it next time.
Is the oil drain plug right or left hand thread? I watched 3 times, and it looks like you turned it clockwise to loosen it (and counter-clockwise to tighten it.)
Are you using the ramps on an inclined driveway? If so, do you know the approximate angle of the driveway? And if you use ramps on inclined driveways regularly, do you have any issues? Is there anything to lookout for? Thanks man!
is there a washer on the drain plug? Changed my oil a few times and noticed that I didn't have a washer or gasket between drain plug and the pan.. maybe why there's a slow leak 😅 Is there supposed to be anything there or can you just snug it and no leak?
Those 2 access panels.. are they absolutely necessary to reinstall? Just seems like an annoyance to deal with & was thinking can I just remove them & forget they ever existed?
If you did any blend research, you would have found that blend oil may not be much better than conventional, a waste of money. Use either full , 100% synthetic, or conventional.
Get some Grease Bully black gloves - disposable nitrile and hold up for several hours of work vs seconds. I use when handling/rubbing meat for my smoker too.
It is best to pour some new oil into the filter, and then lube the o-ring from the new oil that's left on the face of the filter. The filter absorbs a lot of oil and it won't spill. You can see that he introduced a bug or grass in his filter at 6:06. It ended up on the outside of the o-ring so it was fine. And put cardboard down. There was oil all over the place. I liked this video.
Every time I change the oil on my 18 sportage I notice a very slow leak coming from the drain bolt. I change the crushed washer each time and make sure the bolt is nice and snug. Any advice?
The service interval depends on the oil used. Most full synthetics are good for 7,500 miles between oil changes and most of the cheaper oil is good for 3,000 miles. Which ever one you choose make sure the oil filter is rated for the same amount of miles. Hope this helps you out.
You may want to put the emergency brake on and also put a chock behind the rear tire. You can buy a tire choke at Harbor Freight, or search online. Hope this helps you out.
@@HomeOwnerRepair Haven't attempted it yet, but I'll get to it in the next week or so. Gotta get the supplies, and clear it with a friend who has the lifts. 😀 I'll keep ya posted!
I know this is an old video, but I have a 2021 with the same 2.4l engine, and up until the last couple of oil changes we were letting the dealer change it. Since I''ve been changing the oil and the filter I have noticed that the 5.1 quarts the owner's manual recommends leaves the engine a little more than half a quart low on the dipstick. Rockauto states 6.13 quarts for the "initial fill" and 5.07 quarts for "refill". I've been topping it off until it is right at the full mark. Has anyone else experienced this?
my 2017 kia sportage base, is burning oil at an extreme rate, i would say a quart every 1000 miles. i have done oil comp tests and the dealer says nothing is wrong with my car. i found many complaints online
No, as long as the synthetic is the correct grade and meets the specs listed in the owner's manual, it can be used. In fact most owner's manuals will state, "Synthetic may also be used if it meets (whatever the standard is in the owner's manual).
my '17 Sportage has screws/bolts to undo each of the panels. Much better design. Here is the part number for the "u nut" probably could get the bolts much cheaper at the hardware store ( and possibly the u nut) www.quirkparts.com/oem-parts/kia-cover-plate-u-nut-82442d3000/?c=Zz1ib2R5JnM9cmFkaWF0b3Itc3VwcG9ydCZpPTI0MzYwMzU1JnI9NiZhPWtpYSZvPXNwb3J0YWdlJnk9MjAxNyZ0PWV4JmU9Mi00bC1sNC1nYXM%3D
I’m not liking the 18 design at all. Those push pins are cheap and fragile, they break wicked easy. My 2016 Kia Sportage had tabs on those access panels to squeeze together...way easy design
Designed very lousy. Cheap plastic clips will most likely break after 11 oil changes. Silly that owners are paying $6,000/yr for owning a vehicle & after 5 years it is no longer worth doing the repairs.

Lack of engine oil Kia Sportage 2015
Thanks for the excellent video. Got me all set up for a successful first oil change on my Sportage! 🙂
Glad it helped!

I have done this in the past on very stuck oil filters. Not from what I have done but from previous owners.
The best thorough informative video on here. Thank you!

Yup, Mine drinks oil too
Just wondering if you still have this vehicle? I had a rod start knocking a few weeks ago. I’m trying to figure what I’m going to do.
Very helpful video! New subscriber here! From the 🇵🇭

Its clockwise to to tighten it.

It's not much of an angle, and the are is too low to the ground to crawl under it.
Don't trust those plastic ramps, they so often break. And always chock your rear wheels whether or not there is an incline.
is there a washer on the drain plug? Changed my oil a few times and noticed that I didn't have a washer or gasket between drain plug and the pan.. maybe why there's a slow leak 😅 Is there supposed to be anything there or can you just snug it and no leak?
There should be a washer on there. if you go to the dealer they can get a new drain plug with a washer for you.
Those 2 access panels.. are they absolutely necessary to reinstall? Just seems like an annoyance to deal with & was thinking can I just remove them & forget they ever existed?
They are a pain. They are mainly there for aerodynamics to help with fuel mileage.
Is your engine rapidly burning oil? I bought my son a 2017 and it's burning lots of oil.
Funny you asked this. Yes! It's a 2018 and it burns about a quart and a half every 1,000 miles...NOT HAPPY!
have a 2015 Camry takes the 0/20 synthetic, last OC at valvoline went w the blend cheaper. was that a bad move?
How many miles are on the car

i thought you are supposed to pour new oil into the new filter before installing the new filter. is that not necessary with this vehicle?
You don't have to but you can if you want, it won't hurt anything.
It is best to pour some new oil into the filter, and then lube the o-ring from the new oil that's left on the face of the filter. The filter absorbs a lot of oil and it won't spill. Loosing the oil fill cap will relieve any negative presure build up and you might end up getting more dirty oil out
Though I did this in the video. Yes, this is good advice and should be done. Thanks for watching.

For the heck of it, did you also try to replace the bolt with a new one. just in case the threads on the bolt are damaged.
@@HomeOwnerRepair Haven't yet. That's my next idea. Gonna do it next oil change and see what happens. Thank you
What is the oil service interval for a 2018 sportage LX. And is there a difference if I use a blend or conventional oil
The service interval depends on the oil used. Most full synthetics are good for 7,500 miles between oil changes and most of the cheaper oil is good for 3,000 miles. Which ever one you choose make sure the oil filter is rated for the same amount of miles. Hope this helps you out.
As far as safety goes, how do you make sure the car doesn't roll when on the ramps?
You may want to put the emergency brake on and also put a chock behind the rear tire. You can buy a tire choke at Harbor Freight, or search online. Hope this helps you out.
Helped me, thnx Tony...👍
Glad this auto repair video helped you to change the oil in your KIA Sportage.
My kia did not have a crush washer, you didint meantion it do im assuming they dont have one

My 2018 sportage is set up nothing like this 2018 sportage my oil filter cover is completely different and I have no cover over the oil drain nut.

Does using synthetic void the warranty ?
No, as long as the synthetic is the correct grade and meets the specs listed in the owner's manual, it can be used. In fact most owner's manuals will state, "Synthetic may also be used if it meets (whatever the standard is in the owner's manual).

how often do u change oil if u use MOBIL 1 ?? 3k or 5k ???
With full synthetic Mobil 1 you should be able to go 7,500 miles between oil changes.

I'm scared as my oil change place took 5 minutes to do my oil change. That seem too fast 😅
These cars are pretty easy
5 minutes and they charge around $70. Highway robbery. $20 to $40 to do it yourself. Depending on the brand oil and oil filter you use
I have sportage 2019 2000cc I used 5-30w synthetic oil in winter
