Thanks! I expected the sludge to become black or at least dark brown because of the lemon time lapse what I did a couple of months ago: th-cam.com/video/nc8EFEoUuiE/w-d-xo.html But I didn't expect it to get black this quickly.
Oranges have a bit of plant called “sumonide” inside their core, it causes them to create airwaves coming from out of the orange. With no air, the orange suddenly has bad tasting flavor which eventually turns the orange black, then gets mold.
That's what I was thinking. Looks like the whole orange grew mold first where it was touching the cut orange. That thing could probably last a year if it wasn't near the cut one! Lol
I know it's a cliché but please help me to make the channel more discoverable on youtube by commenting and liking. Your support does make a difference. Thanks for watching!
Fascinating stuff. I heard that an orange peel takes 50 years to decompose, they're pretty dry. One of those Leave No Trace people told me that so I always pick them up when others leave them on a hiking trail
I feel like the you should have separated them or something, that whole orange would have lasted even longer if it was not affected by the mold on the cut one.
The Orange literally melted. I guess this is kinda what happens in compost bins when you think about it, as weird as it is, I wonded if you could safely use that to feed other plants.
@@chewtag if it’s inside a thing that must mean it’s humidity is kept in check from the outside and that’s why it lasted much longer than the ones shown here

I live in Florida and my parents have an orange tree in their backyard. They just picked it not too long ago. They are nothing like what you buy in the store. The color is a little off, but the taste of them are amazing. Oranges are a big deal here lol
I remembered you told me you are from Florida, and I think it's still only you who reads that last row in the description... :D Color is a little off? You mean they are more greenish color, right? It's so strange to me because it think I've never seen a green orange in my life.
@@PhotoOwl That is correct about the color. Some of them tend to have a greenish color to them. They are really juicy and delicious. My parents have had that tree and have been taking care of it for as long as I can remember. They'll put blankets on it during really cold nights because frost can destroy the oranges.
There are many different varieties of oranges. Just like there are different colors and textures and tastes of apples… Breeding and hybridizing trees makes for different types of oranges with different sizes, shapes, colors and uses.
@@PhotoOwl Ripe oranges are rarely completely orange. They get doused in ethylene gas to color them completely, that’s true for every citrus fruit. That’s why the organic citrus fruit are always blotchy green, the organic regulations forbid this artificial ripening. =)

You could have kept them in different places the cut ones liquid also makes the citrus on the uncut fruits peel react so due to that also 1% of the uncut orange got rotted
You should have kept them separate. Since the container was open and there were flies, mols, bacteria, Virus, moisture it went bad so early otherwise it would just dry out and become small in size like in a dehydrator. And even taste tasty too. Avoid moisture at all cost. Mold grows due to moisture.

would be interesting to see what would happen if you did them separately. The mold from the sliced orange probably spread to the whole orange quicker.

I think you could, but it might be a bit too concentrated for some plants
It's interesting that the mold takes much longer to attack the outside of the unpeeled orange. A few days vs a few months.
The orange peel is there for a reason, it's job is to protect the inside of the orange.
Im sure the whole one would be fine if it hadn’t been sitting just mm to the rotting one
i have a small unpeeled orange sitting inside a thing in my room for over 2 years now and its not moldy or wet or anything, just dark brown and rough
