5&4) They take up less space until you start adding all the external drives you need to use to supplement the non-expandable drive space in all-in-ones. Then there are the cables to interconnect these necessary external devices.
    3) The people I know that move their AIOs around also tend to send them into the shop to replace cracked screens on a regular basis. If you need to move a lot, stick to a laptop.
    2) You are really reaching to try and fill out this list.
    1) Not on your iMAC. And there are touch and pen screens available for towers.

    Interesting,
till now I thought that the only good way to go is a desktop.
But recently I came up with the thought, what is against a all in one?
Because I'm feeling that I don't need that much computer power for the everyday tasks.
And I like it to keep everything clean and tidy.
So a all in one could be a solution?

For your first two points, Space Saving, firstly you could get either a mini-ITX/micro-ATX sized case which would take up much less room than a mid-tower or full-tower case, or hell you could get a tiny desktop NUC or an HDMI NUC and you are done. For cable management you could just get a wireless keyboard and mouse and take an extra 10 minutes to cable manage you PC and wiring to the display. For your third point of you being able to carry it, many small form-factor cases such as mini-ITX/micro-ATX offer carrying handles, that I know of at least. Or if you have a NUC, those things are really small and easy to carry or move around. For your minor point on the aesthetics there are badass looking gaming PC's that look crazy amazing, liquid cooling, full RGB lighting, or there are simple "silent" PC's that are flat looking, I'm basically saying they look stealthly, not many jagged parts, a billion and a half screws easily visibile, etc. For your media center point, yes I have to agree with you there, but a NUC or something like a Chromcast, Apple TV, a Roku, etc, work as well. For you final point, touch-screens, I have to agree with you there, I've only seen All-in-Ones, convertibles, and laptops have touch screens. Interesting video Dave!! Though I will have stick with my desktop and laptop set up.

if you're someone who isn't a computer expert but just need a simple computer to get stuff done, I'd say an all in one is perfectly fine for you. Obviously it depends on the type of work you are doing but if you're not doing anything intensive, a less cluttered, simpler AIO machine is probably better for you. That being said, you can still build a relatively compact tower PC with better performance as long as you're willing to do the research and work. Building a PC isn't as complicated as it sounds. It just takes a bit of research. I don't think one is 'better' than the other. It's just a matter of preference. An AIO is priced higher because of the higher cost of manufacturing.

I thought about this not having a battery like a laptop and what I realized is I hardly ever lack a power source for my laptop. Meaning it doesn't need a battery. My phone pretty much is my laptop when Im a passenger in a car. I do take a laptop to school but I immediately plug it up so why is a laptop so much more convenient than this? It's not. Desktops while being more reliable will have you paying way more for the same thing with cords and less mobility. So while a desktop will last longer more than likely. An all in one makes up for it with cost and all in one's like the Lenovo C40 are up-gradable. So I am currently deciding whether I want to buy a new laptop, all in one, or desktop. I have given myself a budget of $500. Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't get an all in one and if not then what should I buy? I currently see a Lenovo C40-05 Windows 8.1 8gb Ram 1 TB HDD 8 for $429 on Amazon. Is there a deal where I can get all of that on a Desktop or Laptop for the same price?

  • @casekocsk

You can build a smaller form factor of desktop PC and also using same wireless technology. Then you can save space, less clutter and cables, also more pleasing aesthetic (some even vesa mount), and can be used as media center alternatives... but still retain most pros of full sized desktop pc.

I agree with both postings. As a retired Unix System Administrator, and therefor a "ProSumer" who has lived through all of the hardware "revision" since 1972, I have had both (all 3) environment at home, usually at the same time. (The third environment being the Laptop and now Tablet.) I have both built my own Windows box and been through virtually every model Apple has offered.
Currently my systems are a 2010 27 inch iMac, an iPad Air, and an iPhone.
I have always proselytized the concept -- when buying a new computer -- buy the "top of th line" available at the time. Or if money is an issue, wait until Fall when the new models come out and buy last years top of the line at a discount!
Interestingly, I have had more component failure issues with my custom built Windows box (a Tom's Hardware design) than with the iMac. I happen to also have a collection of external disk drives -- both for redundancy and performance issues. Historically, all were FireWire 800, but now that I'm retired, I'm drooling over the latest crop of Solid State Drives, which are approaching my price/performance range. My primary usage is gaming and have been a LOTRO player since launch back in 2007!

As a person working in IT support in a University i like much more the all in one computers. First they use less power and when you have over 1000 computers in a building that is a huge bonus. Second these days tech is super fast where an laptop i3 and and ssd with 16GB of ram can do all the things an avrage work computer needs. It can open many excells, have a lot of chrome tabs open, use external network storage. They are super clean when installed, little to none cables, much more conviniente for cleaning as well since they all are the same unit and to be honest they are super repariable. Compared to laptops they are super eazy to open and fix. Since they are big they dont suffer that much from overheating.
Dont get me wrong desktops are more powerfull but are bigger, require a monitor and a lot more cables. For an AIO i run 4 cables: power, ethernet and mouse and keyboard. Super elegant. They also have built in BT where i can just connect theme to the tv directly if in a regular classroom or onto a projector in amphetherers. Yes i do understand that i can get an external adapter but trust me this is the ultimate solution

All in ones are beautiful and very neat. If you're not going for raw power they're a great option. Design and space wise they are a clear winner. That said I have a monster tower and monster 4K to.... but it's no way nearly as pretty.

Great to see you both working together... I'm subscribed to both of you and am a fan of both of you as well. :)
I understand your point of view and for the reasons you stated, I can agree about those reasons for a good feature(s) RE: All-In-Ones, But,
    1) As a long time fan of tinkering, and having considered All-In-Ones, here's my take:
    All-In-Ones
    a) Can't come close to the versatility of a Desk Top...
    b) Cooling options for Highly Powered Needed Tasks aren't as viable...
    c) Upgrades RE: Work aren't as possible when needed...
    d) Touch isn't really a functional aspect of a person's normal body function in the position of a All-In-One position... I believe even Steve Jobs talked of this misfunctionality of the 8.1 ideas from Microsoft, etc... RE: being able to use one's hands, a stylus, etc...
There's more, but for the sake of brevity, I'll stop now... on This...
I do like the idea of All-In-Ones, just not the actual functionality and power that a Desk Top can give me for many reasons.
A Fan of Yours As Well,
    Wolfy :)

The power my system deliveres isn't avalable in all-in-one. I also need the upgradability which is way to limited on a all-in-one. I have a large work desk, plenty of room for a large system. My system is also dead silent due to watercooling. I also choose my components very carefully, I demand top-tier quality components.
Even for a regular consumer might be better off with a small ITX case and a monitor instead of a all-in-one.

If i was going to build a pc myself with the same kind of specs it would already be around €700,- with peripherals.
So the price difference was too small to even consider a normal desktop.
I'm not much of a gamer and the expansion slots for extra ram and another hard drive is enough for my family as it's going to be mainly used for schoolwork and my administration.
If you are a gamer a tower is much better and probably a cheap Ryzen setup which has a better upgrade path.

Even all-in-one desktops are antiquated devices. Most people don't even need one. If someone thinks they really need a desktop (but don't), an all-in-one is at least less antiquated than a tower and monitor setup. There is something an all-in-one offers that a box doesn't... and I, an owner of a Mac Pro (the tower, not the 2013 Mac Pro), am saying this. I like all-in-one computers; in fact, my first real machine was an iMac G5 that I got in late 2004. So much better than that c@ppy Compaq tower and CRT we had prior.
(Oh, BTW, I futz with my tower way more than I do with my all-in-one. There is more to futz with, whether it be the user making work for himself or needing to do work. An all-in-one offers a great user experience without much care for the product itself. My 2005 iMac G5 [this is not the 2004 one I mentioned] has been--knock on wood--working fine for the past 10 years. NOTHING has gone wrong with it at all, and it just works a dream. It fits comfortably on a desk, has nice speakers and 20" display, slot-loading super drive, webcam/mic, etc. I tried running a tower in its place, but I got sick of the clutter and the fact that I ended up messing with the tower more than with the all-in-one. I've never had to change anything on the all-in-one. All I did was add some more RAM recently.

You didn't need to go with a mac for video editing. Premiere is pretty much the most used editing software and it works just as good on a PC as a Mac. Besides that those extra money you can use on your PC will make the experience even better when editing because of a better GPU, more ram or better CPU :)

It is interesting and right few days ago I decided to buy a all in one. I actually think is more interesting comparing a all in one with a laptop as they are in a way more similar, for example..what made me opt for a All in one is a bigger monitor and the fact I can choose the keyboard that I prefer, in this case a nice mechanical keyboard...so if you don't need to carry the computer with you wherever you go but you keep it in the house, maybe moving it just from one room to another, All in one are the way to go...thank you anyway for uploading...cheers!

I am pretty sure we dont share the same view of what good aesthetics are. LoL
All in one is okay for simplistic office work, but otherwise a good tower. Possible supplemented with a traveling laptop is the way to go, I think. Btw, you actually need good hardware to do heavy video rendering fast.

I have a DELL all in one, and it works just fine for my needs. Space saving was an issue for me. Also I will be getting a good lap top computer as a back up computer to my all in one should something go wrong with it. My guess is that in the future all computers will be all in ones, and the tower will get smaller and smaller before it disappears completely.

    • @blueBlackpurple
      @blueBlackpurple 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@sisno2619 My all in one still works just fine for my needs. Some people seem to prefer a computer tower because they say it is easier to replace parts and upgrade those.
Also, with an all in one computer, if the screen (monitor) goes bad you may have to replace the entire computer, where as with a computer that has a tower, you would only need to buy a new monitor.
The way I look at it is essentially most people are already using all in one computers because that is what laptop computers are. Also, I am not a mac user, but as I understand them, all mac desktops are all in one computers already. Please correct me if I am wrong about that.
So if you need to save space and you do not have a specific reason for wanting or needing a desktop with a tower, I would still recommend an all in one computer.

I'm looking at the AiO as a portable solution to music production.
Laptops are great an all, but if you have access to say a gen 3 laptop with an average GPU AND an AiO with a Gen 4 and inbuilt graphics.... You're going to see and feel a difference on the GPU devoid gen 4. I've checked - the numbers are clear.
The cost of getting a laptop with killer performance, especially on a budget is almost an ovymoron - AiO PCs will help that deficiency

I do understand what he's saying I guess it depends on the user because I really can't see myself buying an AIO pc since the performance can never match up to a real custom PC. Some people might not care about performance but for people who want the best performance for the money a Custom PC is the way to go IMO. if you guys want Clean looks and just using a machine for light tasks I guess the AIO would be the best for you.

If space is an issue and you want to carry your device around, get a laptop. AIO's are nothing more than glorified laptops, which offer even less bang for the bucks. If you already have a great desktop and/or a great laptop, then you could consider buying something like a Dell XPS18. I have one, but I don't see it as an AIO, I see it as a giant Windows tablet and it's always a great success at parties. But I would never use it in place of a good desktop or laptop. There is absolutely no case to make for an iMac, you might as well just say that you want one as a fashion accessory. Because that's all it is.

  • @sherylr1883

Reasons 5 and 4 are practically the same. Reason 3, depends on how bulky or slim the monitor/AIO PC is. Reason 2, depends on how large the screen is (this effectively negates reason 3). Reason 1 doesn't make it better than conventional desktops because both aio's and desktops offer the same option. So it's really only good for either #3 or #2. But neither #3 nor #2 makes AIO PCs better than desktops in that A, there are tons of options these days -- Zotac and Gigabyte, among others, offer a lot of mini PCs that are even upgrade-able to an extent (most AIO PCs can't be upgraded), and those tiny boxes are easier to carry around than a whole monitor (I can even fit one in a shoulder bag); and B, these mini PCs can also be used as HTPCs and even do a better job because the specs can be tailored to suit the user's needs.
Desktops are by far the superior PCs. I realize that I am only replying seven months after this video was posted but mini PCs have been around for a couple years now.

All in one is essentially a bigger laptop. Which means that if something breaks inside, let's say a cooling system, it will be difficult to fix. with that said if you want a faster pc, you have to buy a new one, which is money. and you can build a relatively small mini itx pc. hiding cables is about imagination and planing. you can even mount the whole thing on the wall. no complaints about imac though, it's a totally different story.

All -n-one's have their place, but they will never compare to a tower as you admitted. As for space, another commenter said what I was thinking is you can have a large monitor, or high res tv and use a mini pc or NUC mounted to the back of the display either on the desk or the wall cleanly. The non-proprietary nature of a tower, upgradability, and versatility are in my opinion key over an all-in-one. Not to mention if the display goes out, you loose your PC during for repair time. As for touch screen, that is a luxury option that may or may not be important to many, including me. Nice video though.

My AIO & my Dell XPS-15 Notebook both have user replaceable storage drives: SSD & spinning HDD. From the comments, I didn't know how disadvantaged iMac users were; no touch screens, poor hardware accessories, poor software choices, fewer upgrades.
Models, technology's etc are changing so fast, at such low costs, that I upgrade each year. USB3 & now USB-c coming.
Both computers use the extra large screen monitor, in addition to the inbuilt monitors. My wife & visitors watch the TV screen. Researching, buying, TH-cam, TV timetables, etc, can be readily, easily projected onto the general room viewing screens.
AIO computers are heavier to mount than large screen monitors. So switching between portrait & landscape display is more troublesome. But they do allow more table working area than my other PC units.
