Honestly performing WELL at Coachella says a lot because artists are performing in the worst conditions ever. It's hot, windy, and sandy, and ppl are drunk and a bit gross in general. If you can sing well in such an uncontrollable environment, it deserves so much praise and respect 👍🏻👍🏻
The funny thing with Coachella now is how the opinions of people watching the livestream change things. Actual live show and critic reviews right after LSF's stage were actually quite good, matching reviews for BP 2018. It was only after comments from the live stream about their vocals that the discourse majorly shifted and articles started changing to cover that instead. In a way, it's a bit annoying since the eventual outcome will be performers targeting the streaming audience, since it's much larger, and sacrificing the live performance factors in favor of giving a performance that looks better for recordings instead. Sigh.
I also dont know tbh. I mean, that group has 2 musical actors! The vocals are stacked (not just in talent, but also technique). I think it's because Melos are so chill? They also didnt say much about Mamamoo
I can't say I'm a Melody (but I love BTOB) but it makes me sad many people don't appreciate BTOB's vocals. All of them even the rapper have incredible vocals, there's no bias in that statement.
MAMAMOO, BTOB, SHINEE, EXO, RED VELVET, SNSD = Live Vocal Power no matter the singing conditions. They don’t hide from encores and behind heavily engineered vocals. They sound good anywhere and with confidence.
Thanks for highlighting Jihyo, Nayeon and Jeongyeon. They sound so stable when performing compared to the rest of the group so you can see they put a lot of effort into their live singing
Yep, that’s mostly because when twice’s survival show was filming those three would have already debuted had not 2 other trainees of 6mix left jype a few months before debut. The Japan team and kids team of twice weren’t set to debut until much training later after 6mix debuted had they were still 6. For example chaeryoung of itzy was on the same survival show. Her skills would be vastly inferior then they are now had she made twice instead of debuting with the regular amount of training she did before itzy. Tzy-yu would be close to yeji level had she not made twice and trained into itzy…
It's so ironic when I was arguing with someone who said that SM idols are just concocted to have an image of good singers but they just lipsync and got called "best singers", like bro, they started to bring up the fact SM's not successful enough and stuff like that because they know their faves are eaten up alive in vocals 😭😭

But the fact that Kiss of Life is a rookie group and had the balls to attempt the song (and KILLED IT!) just shows how much skill they have. I've seen some people complain that Belle did an 'easier' high note but I also read she did one for like 3 ? people at once so yeah, I dont trust how thats 'easier'. And besides, obviously it wont be the same, they aren't even a year old as a group and BEG were a senior group in their 6th year (apparently, Im just a casual listener at best) when they released that song. Sometimes its not just talent but also experience.
True, I hate it when people just box ITZY into "just a performance group" when in reality they also have very stable live vocals, they may not have the best vocals but they won't dissapoint fans when it comes to live singing and I respect them for that.

SM didn't upload that Irene and Seulgi's practice video but Irene sent it on bubble in low quality lol. But they sound so stable & good even while dancing. I wish SM let them perform on stage with minimal backing track. They're clearly capable.
i think the lack of live vocals in kpop atm is why i’m starting to gravitate towards kbands! groups like xdinary heroes, day 6, lucy, the rose and more consistently sing live and it’s just so refreshing to me (especially as the vocals are always insanely good) it’s even better when they get to play their instruments live too! i feel like the standards for kpop groups and kbands are pretty different though seeing as kbands don’t dance and so the main performance element is through their voices and music
@@eleanor_carys Well for Thai pop I mostly listen to soloists (e.g. Jeff Satur) as for JPOP, Im still getting to know many groups but so far I like the boy groups Be First, Mazzel and EXILE (this last one is a bigger group than NCT so just a heads up) As for girl groups, I really like Girls2. The company of Mazzel and Be First is also planning to debut a gg in the near future so Im looking forward to them new, still finding out what I like tbh.

One defense I see a lot of fans falling back on nowadays is that it's unrealistic to expect live vocals with involved choreography and for awhile as kpop routines got more and more intricate I accepted that as an explanation. But then it dawned on me that that's a bare minimum expectation for a performer. Anyone who wants to be an idol and perform onstage should at the very least be expected to dance and sing decently and there's a plethora of examples to pull from showing that it's possible. If companies care enough to appropriately prepare idols for debut that would be the norm. Instead the criteria keeps getting diluted to the point where it becomes widely accepted that a group won't even be able to approximate their recorded sound even if they're standing still. Performance quality should always matter if for nothing other than respect for artistry. If fans want the prestige and bragging rights of their faves being recognized for their talent and artistry then they need to expect that from the people they support.
Have you ever seen a kpop audition form? They want to see you either sing, rap OR dance. Idol doesn't equate singer, idol equates performer which comes in a bunch of different forms, not just singing, that's why there were different positions like vocalist, rapper, dancer, visual, center.
I think dreamcatcher deserved a spot in this video, i know they are not the best tecnically speaking, but their commitment to sing live with their hard coreos is really impressive and outstanding in kpop. However great job as usual
For me girl Generation, Exo and Red Velvet are best when it comes to live singing. Today's idol start touching their earpiece for bad singing while back in days snsd used to sing entire song without any earpiece
SME really does put a lot of effort, training, support, and expectations when it comes to their vocalist. IMO there isn’t a bad idol who has a vocalist position in SME

And for me nowaday people care too much about just hiting the note right (because most of idols now can’t), but not enough about actually enjoy music while singing. Like you can hear Solar excitement in that like 3s clip, not just her singing the rock song live. (Funfact: Most of Mamamoo concerts have more than 50% of no backing track and 100% of live vocal. Even their solo concerts)
i really love when you do videos like this showcasing singing, because as someone w/no vocal experience it really helps me differentiate between live and backtrack (besides the egregious examples) hope ur doing well!
Mamamoo, KIOF, Dreamcatcher and BTOB will always be my favorites when it comes to live singing. I can appreciate NMIXX and Twice Jihyo, Nayeon and Jeongyeon too :)
Onew recently had 3 fanmeets where he sang live acoustic versions of his songs. I can’t express how refreshing it was and how many years it added back to my life

I wish BoA got more love when it comes to live singing. She’s no stranger to lipsyncing, of course, but most of her concerts are 100% (or very close to being 100%) live. She always sounds great and has such wonderful stage presence. I know she’s 1st gen and not as popular anymore, but it would be nice if more people sung her praises. She’s so good.
Mamamoo deserves to feature more on this video, you shouldve make them as an example for each chapter. They excel everything in terms of vocal, dance or even stage presence (theyre good at commanding audience). Please watch their concerts and youll see what I mean. Mostly ive seen are from Big 3 Companies

The lack of clips for ateez🥲 I hope we can get an ateez vocal video soon wether it’s a ranking/analysis or about review of their Coachella performance (little scared of what you’ll say tbh😅). If you do end up making a video like that then I hope you check out the most recent ATEEZ immortal songs performance. For Jongho I think you should check out a video of him singing ‘Everything’ at their concert. I’m also very curious if Jongho’s high note for wonderland at Coachella was good. It sounded better to me but I don’t know.
I know there are many artists, but if you are going to do more parts you should definitely include BtoB, INFINITE, SHINee, EXO, Ailee and there are many more actually, KPOP is full of good artists
what i personally love about jihyo's voice is the unique open quality and fullness she brings to her belting. wendy, solar and jihyo, they have these powerful voices

God I wish we could go back to (real) live singing being an automatic expectation when it comes to music show performances. I'm sorry but these newer groups cannot use the excuse of "their choreos are much harder" to be lip syncing almost all their music show performances because as a 2nd gen stan myself, I can confidently say this is just not true. 2nd gen choreos were just as dynamic and challenging in their own ways, and yet they still managed to sing live for most of their performances because it was the norm, it was the general expectation. maybe if we made it the norm again, these kpop companies will train their new artists better before debuting them instead of relying on modern technology to hide the fact that they can't sing for shit.
I always laugh at that 'choreos are harder' when groups like SHINee, EXO, VIXX, Infinite etc. exist. Come on. They aren't all only known for their vocals/rap.

I feel like a lot of people dont talk about itzy’s live singing is because when itzy first started out, a lot of their title tracks had a good amount of talk singing on them. The actual parts singing to a melody were divided up very cleverly and i think it was done on purpose. So a lot of people are of the impression their songs are still structured like that when they aren’t. Really thinking about their songs dalla dalla-loco most of the verses of their songs were talk singing, some rap, and maybe one or two lines of singing. itzy improved on their live singing abilities alot though.

The funniest thing about them is Wendy is a horrible lipsyncer because she's so unchallenged so she overcompensates with her dancing and expressions, so it's so easy to tell even if you mute them lol. It's like the opposite of Taeyeon and Ningning who both look bored when lipsyncing.

Wendy performed ALL her solo music show performances LIVE and I think that kind of bravery and hard work is underappreciated in kpop. I hope live singing becomes the standard and not exception in the industry.
Maybe when companies learned to not give the members lines that are out of their range, groups will not be afraid to sing live. But then again, idols need to do their part and get their sh*t together and not rely on lip syncing and loud af backtracks.

About old gen idol, sometimes u will not recognize that they are singing live untill they make something ex laught, wrong lyrics, wrong language, forgot the lyrics and etc. So in my opinion SNSD/EXO/SUJU/DBSK/RV/BTOB/SVT are in another level.
I really admire rv irene and wendy's hard work on improving their vocals. Its rare to see especially they are in a 10-year old group. Their improvements vocally for the last 3 years is chef's kiss!

I remember NMIXX haewon said in an interview, that their gen who JYP started the need to practice dancing jumping around while singing on mic as mandatory routine. Which different from TWICE gen where they practice sing and dance separately. Of course NMIXX has different coaching for dancing and singing, but still when practicing they MUST dance while singing. You guys can watch all their videos of choreography practice, all of them are dancing while singing live. Have fun!
Sullyoon’s effortless live vocal in the bridge of DICE and the fact that she’s arguably only the 3rd best vocalist in the group proves that NMIXX has the strongest vocalists overall. LOVE MY GIRLS
DK (Seventeen) be singing live randomly. Anytime anywhere anyplace. Whether it is Gose or Nana tour. So No doubt on his vocal skills. EXO Baekhyun be practising falsetto's everytime he comes live. Same goes for EXO D.O. & Chen. These idols need no filters. Among all these Idols I will have to mention BTOB. They even sing live in their YT shorts/reels.
itzy always surprise me for being so stable while executing their difficult choreography. They are probably the in bottom few in terms of vocal technique amongst the well known 4th gen girl groups but their live performances are never lacking. normally when the dance starts to influence the ability to sing properly, it is very important to fall back on your vocal fundamentals, but with the weak of singing foundation among the members, im always amazed how they still sound so good. either they are tweaking their moves allowing them to have a stable core so the notes come out in a steady flow or they are just practising overtime in which i really commend their effort.
I think new groups are starting to show more live singing, except for illit I think the groups debuting so far have good vocals and stability (Btw I'm not hating on illit, some of the girls have potential but they definitely need to improve). I'm curious to know your opinion about the new boygroups too, I think Riize and ZB1 are pretty good. Especially I love Zhang hao's voice and he's always singing louder than the backtrack, even during a dance practice he started to sing when no one was singing. I'm not sure if we will return to 2nd gen era but I wish, because I find more enjoyable to watch a performance with vocal flaws than a performance where they "sing" perfect but look like robots. That's the main reason why I prefer to watch old kpop awards shows

The best way to listen to live singing? The Bands!!! They play the music live on their concerts. That's why lately I only have interest in bands. Day6, Xdinary heroes, Ftisland, Cnblue, Nflying, Lucy, Onewe, the Rose etc. And soloists. That's where the real live music is

I've seen some people complain that Belle did an 'easier' high note but I also read she did one for like 3 ? people at once so yeah, I dont trust how thats 'easier'. And besides, obviously it wont be the same, they aren't even a year old as a group and BEG were a senior group in their 6th year (apparently, Im just a casual listener at best) when they released that song. Sometimes its not just talent but also experience.

i think the lack of live vocals in kpop atm is why i’m starting to gravitate towards kbands! groups like xdinary heroes, day 6, lucy, the rose and more consistently sing live and it’s just so refreshing to me (especially as the vocals are always insanely good) it’s even better when they get to play their instruments live too! i feel like the standards for kpop groups and kbands are pretty different though seeing as kbands don’t dance and so the main performance element is through their voices and music

As for girl groups, I really like Girls2. The company of Mazzel and Be First is also planning to debut a gg in the near future so Im looking forward to them new, still finding out what I like tbh.

Dreamcatcher, Red Velvet and Mamamoo are epitome of live singing and charisma on stage! They need to be on Coachella
One defense I see a lot of fans falling back on nowadays is that it's unrealistic to expect live vocals with involved choreography and for awhile as kpop routines got more and more intricate I accepted that as an explanation. But then it dawned on me that that's a bare minimum expectation for a performer. Anyone who wants to be an idol and perform onstage should at the very least be expected to dance and sing decently and there's a plethora of examples to pull from showing that it's possible. If companies care enough to appropriately prepare idols for debut that would be the norm. Instead the criteria keeps getting diluted to the point where it becomes widely accepted that a group won't even be able to approximate their recorded sound even if they're standing still. Performance quality should always matter if for nothing other than respect for artistry. If fans want the prestige and bragging rights of their faves being recognized for their talent and artistry then they need to expect that from the people they support.
Have you ever seen a kpop audition form? They want to see you either sing, rap OR dance. Idol doesn't equate singer, idol equates performer which comes in a bunch of different forms, not just singing, that's why there were different positions like vocalist, rapper, dancer, visual, center.

Onew recently had 3 fanmeets where he sang live acoustic versions of his songs. I can’t express how refreshing it was and how many years it added back to my life

I wish BoA got more love when it comes to live singing. She’s no stranger to lipsyncing, of course, but most of her concerts are 100% (or very close to being 100%) live. She always sounds great and has such wonderful stage presence. I know she’s 1st gen and not as popular anymore, but it would be nice if more people sung her praises. She’s so good.
Mamamoo deserves to feature more on this video, you shouldve make them as an example for each chapter. They excel everything in terms of vocal, dance or even stage presence (theyre good at commanding audience). Please watch their concerts and youll see what I mean. God I wish we could go back to (real) live singing being an automatic expectation when it comes to music show performances. I'm sorry but these newer groups cannot use the excuse of "their choreos are much harder" to be lip syncing almost all their music show performances because as a 2nd gen stan myself, I can confidently say this is just not true. 2nd gen choreos were just as dynamic and challenging in their own ways, and yet they still managed to sing live for most of their performances because it was the norm, it was the general expectation. maybe if we made it the norm again, these kpop companies will train their new artists better before debuting them instead of relying on modern technology to hide the fact that they can't sing for shit.
I always laugh at that 'choreos are harder' when groups like SHINee, EXO, VIXX, Infinite etc. exist. Come on. They aren't all only known for their vocals/rap.

I feel like a lot of people dont talk about itzy’s live singing is because when itzy first started out, a lot of their title tracks had a good amount of talk singing on them. The actual parts singing to a melody were divided up very cleverly and i think it was done on purpose. So a lot of people are of the impression their songs are still structured like that when they aren’t. Really thinking about their songs dalla dalla-loco most of the verses of their songs were talk singing, some rap, and maybe one or two lines of singing. itzy improved on their live singing abilities alot though.

The funniest thing about them is Wendy is a horrible lipsyncer because she's so unchallenged so she overcompensates with her dancing and expressions, so it's so easy to tell even if you mute them lol. It's like the opposite of Taeyeon and Ningning who both look bored when lipsyncing.

Wendy performed ALL her solo music show performances LIVE and I think that kind of bravery and hard work is underappreciated in kpop. I hope live singing becomes the standard and not exception in the industry.
Maybe when companies learned to not give the members lines that are out of their range, groups will not be afraid to sing live. But then again, idols need to do their part and get their sh*t together and not rely on lip syncing and loud af backtracks.

it sucks to see how overlooked ateez are in a conversation about live vocals when they're known for that and are one of the only newgen groups who have been consistently singing live since debut. they have so many impressive live and raw vocals clips, most recently member seonghwa running and jumping while singing to show how they would train since predebut singing while running around their training room (now they do it on treadmills). the way kpop stans constantly turn a blind eye to them is so upsetting but expected atp

Of course NMIXX has different coaching for dancing and singing, but still when practicing they MUST dance while singing.

DK (Seventeen) be singing live randomly. Anytime anywhere anyplace. Whether it is Gose or Nana tour. So No doubt on his vocal skills. EXO Baekhyun be practising falsetto's everytime he comes live. Same goes for EXO D.O. & Chen. These idols need no filters. Among all these Idols I will have to mention BTOB. They even sing live in their YT shorts/reels.

itzy always surprise me for being so stable while executing their difficult choreography. They are probably the in bottom few in terms of vocal technique amongst the well known 4th gen girl groups but their live performances are never lacking.
normally when the dance starts to influence the ability to sing properly, it is very important to fall back on your vocal fundamentals, but with the weak of singing foundation among the members, im always amazed how they still sound so good. either they are tweaking their moves allowing them to have a stable core so the notes come out in a steady flow or they are just practising overtime in which i really commend their effort.
Dreamcatcher does really well with live singing and they have intense choreo.
I think new groups are starting to show more live singing, except for illit I think the groups debuting so far have good vocals and stability (Btw I'm not hating on illit, some of the girls have potential but they definitely need to improve).
I'm curious to know your opinion about the new boygroups too, I think Riize and ZB1 are pretty good. Especially I love Zhang hao's voice and he's always singing louder than the backtrack, even during a dance practice he started to sing when no one was singing.
I'm not sure if we will return to 2nd gen era but I wish, because I find more enjoyable to watch a performance with vocal flaws than a performance where they "sing" perfect but look like robots. That's the main reason why I prefer to watch old kpop awards shows
