First Time 4Runner Camping in a Granville SUV Tent

  • This was out first time #camping in our #4Runner using a #granvilleSUVtent from OffRoadingGear.com. We were given this tent by OffRoadingGear.com to see if it was something that we could potentially consider and use in our #OpenRoad4Two travels and adventures (we were NOT paid for our review of this product).
    We decided to take the Runner out to find some #yellowpost camping up on the Santa Rosa Truck Trail. Spoiler alert, no, we did not get rid of our Taco, but given the opportunity to adventure out with our 4Runner, we jumped!
    In this video we unbox and set up the Granville SUV IV-S Tent for the first time and share thoughts and opinions on how it suites our adventures. If you find yourself in the market for a new tent, check out this option, it is a great alternative to a roof top tent and it won't break the bank.
    In addition we highlight the benefits of yellow post camping. In particular the ones located on the Santa Rosa Rd. S702, AKA the #SantaRosaTruckTrail.

    I'm a first timer when it comes to overlanding. I'm working into it and building up my gear. My kids got me an Ozark Trail SUV tent for father's day. Of course I had to test it out, so my son and I went camping/fishing overnight. Of all my years camping/tenting, hunting, fishing, hiking . . . this was one of the most comfortable nights I've had outdoors in a very long time. I am really enjoying the overland experience and the learning curve. Thanks for the video. I enjoy learning from and tweaking other's experiences.

      We felt the same way…we have built our rig over the years from experience and learning what we like and don’t like. We are so thrilled to hear how you are enjoying the process and had an amazing time! Nothing beats getting out and connecting with nature and unplugging. Happy Adventures out there!

    That’s a nice setup there. Love the fact that you can leave it and explore. Having different ways to travel is awesome, depending on the circumstances. We get to finally start using our truck tent this next weekend so we are pretty stoked !

      That is one of the best features. We have been looking forward to doing a night run. We can’t wait to try it out with the truck…🤞🏼 oh we can’t wait to see the truck tent camping. We enjoyed ours! How is the van build going?

    • @UniqueAdventurez
      @UniqueAdventurez 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OpenRoad4Two the van build is steadly moving along, we spent most of the winter working on a low budget bed lift sysyem, but it has had its issues. We have the rough basics done, but the camping season came on too fast to finish, so its being used as it sits. we will have it complete this winter

    Ok love that you flipped a coin! Glad it hit heads and you kept looking the other site looked perfect with the shade and how flat and open it was. Congrats on getting the company who contacted you guys to try out the tent. Don't you just love the silence of a morning with the sound of coffee being poured in your cup...shhhhhhhh! I'm with you for meals, KISS principle... Keep it Simple Stupid! Cold meals do it for me...even just a simple salad kit in single containers, step it up with crumbles etc. is yummy and toss and go! I'm over the gourmet cooking on a camp. We are mostly carnivore eaters anyway, summer sausage, cheeses just as good as grilling. We have a Carsule, our first SUV tent, will be setting that up in April on the Buffalo River, we are in Arkansas, the natural state! Thx for the vid.

    Hey guy thanks for sharing. We haven't pulled the plug on a out outdoor living area on our 4runner yet because we'll, not sure what will work best either haha. I will say once you have that interior build set up that thing looks a bit bulky to fit inside. So roof rack is probably where it will land if you have a Interior set up like you said. We've been slacking we still need to get our Interior build set up video out haha.

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a great option for adding outdoor living space and to get out of the elements. It would definitely need to live on the roof rack with a complete interior build-out. That's a pretty cool tent. Jessie would like to get a set up for our h3, but think we would go with a roof top type. I would prefer to be off the ground so I'm harder for the bear to reach LOL. But this is a neat little set up. Oh mosquitoes love me too. Maybe it would be a good addition to a roof top type. Something for when you're up through the day and keep the roof top for night. Though, I agree that climbing down to go potty sounds very inconvenient. Great tent review.

      We can’t wait to see if it is adaptable to the truck. The extra living quarters will be welcome from the bugs! Yes, I still like sleeping in the RTT, don’t want the bears to get me either 😂😂. Thanks for watching.

    How high off the ground is the tent opening and how large around is circumference of opening to fit on the SUV? Looking for a large one to accommodate lifted Excursion that is on 35s and family of 4. Do not want a RTT.

    I'm thinking of getting canopy fittings, mesh tarp to see through and regular tarps incase of rain.
    Only thing I'm trying to find is good poles. Pokes that also collaps. Like the square poles that have holes all through them and you connect them by a bolt.
    Since it's just me and my dog. I want something fast to set up. But have a large room to relax and cook away from the bugs.

    We have something similar collecting dust in our closet. Probably should sell it. 🙃 It was a little different in that it was meant as an annex for trucks with truck caps. We used it when we were at our property upstate to get more standing room and to protect us from (insert curse words here) MOSQUITOES. These things definitely have their place, especially if you're staying at a location for awhile. Oh, and best tostadas I've had were in SoCal! Cold meals for the win!

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is what we are hoping for in that it will work with the truck. There will be some future camping locations where those nasty blood sucking mosquitoes 🦟 will be! This will be a nice place to take shelter from them. Cold meals are always a win!!! Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the video, good stuff. Friendly piece of advice...at 6:40 you start speaking about the strap. 1) don't turn your head around and speak at the truck, we can't hear you. 2) you are pointing at something while you speak, but are standing right in the middle of frame, in front of whatever you were referencing.
    Safe travels!

    I'm curious to know how well it handles wind and rain?
    I have a wildernest shell (folds out into a truck bed tent) on a Ford ranger. But we've been looking for an annex to use as a basecamp/spot-keeper for areas we adventure around (Nevada desert and Sierra wandering)
    Looks easy enough to make camp with.
    Any other issues than the torn strap?

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Would make a great base camp. We have used it with our truck with a SuperPacific truck topper as an annex. There are some shots of it our video at Overland Expo. It does have a rain fly. We had it set up on the top of a bluff in light wind and it did well. Haven’t used it in any serious rain storms or wind gusts though. No other issues with the tent besides the torn strap.

    Look into a two person cot if you want to stay off the ground. Make sure you find one that has a mattress with it or find a good mattress to put on top as all two person cots have a bar running right down the center that makes it hard to cuddle with your other half.

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Didn’t know they made a two person cot, the wife will definitely want that! Thanks for the info, really appreciate it. One of the great things about YT, is everyone sharing what works, what doesn’t!

    • @DarkShadowCustoms
      @DarkShadowCustoms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OpenRoad4Two if you do a search on Amazon for a two person cot it will get you started. Since it sounds like you already have a two person sleeping pad you might be able to look for a two person cot the pad will fit on. A cot will take up more storage space when packing up than an air mattress. However when the cot is set up you do have space underneath to store stuff where an air mattress forces you to store stuff around it inside the tent.

      It was a great place for camping! Private and it was also nice and clean! It was a great tent, but it might not be for everyone. That’s what is so great, there is something out there for everyone’s adventure style.

    What type of portable potty do you recommend

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We like to keep it simple. We use a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet seat we purchased from Walmart. There are all kinds of models on Amazon, but the bucket works for us.

    You're supposed to sleep in the back of your vehicle and use the tent for kitchen/bathroom/living room. That gets you off the ground on a nice memory foam mattress.

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. However our Runner does not have a sleep system/platform set-up. This allows a great alternative for those with a similar situation. However we also use the tent as an annex for our Tacoma (with wedge tent) for that very purpose. Works great for additional space for changing and getting out of weather.

    That tent folds up like an ez-up, seems pretty fast to set up. But the only issue I see is that it's bulky.

    • @OpenRoad4Two
      @OpenRoad4Two  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it is definitely larger and finding packing space can be an issue. We have in the back of the 4-Runner but if we we’re all packed it might have to be strapped onto the roof rack.

      We actually did use this with our Tacoma and Super Pacific topper. It worked great as an annex room.
