I love the aluminum pilot house designs of Steve Dashew. Most of his career they were sailboats and in the latter chapter of his boat building he switched to the amazing FPB ocean going power boats which proved perfect for global cruising, including high latitudes.

The pilot house on my Boréal is second to none! Fabulous... incredibly fabulous. Way better than a down below steering station. Aluminum? Fabulous... lifting keel (as you already know) fabulous... I'd love to hear your critique (privately if necessary of the Boréal) because now that we have sailed her 7000 miles there are things I would change but not much.... mostly inside stuff.... she sails SO nicely on all points.

Hi Sheryl and Paul, just watched your video, nice!
We actually met a few years ago in Holland in the small marina at Schiermonnikoog. You interviewed us in our traditional dutch boat with leeboards. The interview appeared in your TV show of that season for which you send us a copy, thanks for that. Back to the topic. We still sail and enjoy our traditional dutch flatbottomed boat. But we are looking at a boat suitable for long distance cruising probably going north (Norway, Baltic Sea, Lofoten, Svalbard). We looked at the Bestevaer range from KMY. But I keep thinking of designing and partly building my own aluminium boat. So I designed an alu boat with a doghouse and drop keel. The hull I developed in Delftship, the rest of the designwork was done in Sketchup. I still need some work done, like weight study and scantlings but first we have to find a builder.

I advice you to change into Rhinoceros, it has build in weight calculation. Sail balance and weight study is really important to take with you from the start. I'd say start compartimentalising your ship and estimate the weight and centre's of gravity. Then you need to look at your hull, whether it has sufficient volume to counter the weights and look at the balance of the combined centre of gravity. With the sailbalance, you may find you have to move your keel forward or backward.
Two things stand out to me in the picture. I wonder if there is ennough volume for the weight for the hull. Did you take this into account in delftship? So yes what is your estimated weight? Two, your propellor is at quite an angle. Combined with the fact that there is no rudder behind it, it will perform badly when sailing backwards. Expect a massive wheel effect and barely any manouverability backwards.
Another thing to take into account is the high freeboard combined with the low lateral underwater surface. The wind will be a big factor of where your boat will move to in harbours.
I could point you to some of the theory and tricks to pick up on the weight study and balance stuff.

I' aware of the things you mention. The design is still in progress. Delftship does weight calculation centres of gravity, buoyancy etc. Displacement in lightship condition is 13.100 kg. I know about the prop issue, but haven't found an proper solution yet. Freeboard height is chosen to have enough interior volume. Tips and tricks are always welcome.

I was gonna say like their last vessel, after they took delivery it would not measure up to Garcia...I figure it will be the same this time...unless they get a Garcia because Garcia has the best shallow draft without reducing righting moment, best pilothouse without all of the wasted space of other pilothouse attempts, and no vessel will top the safety of their companionway doors.

Long time Sketchup user. From a whole home, various professional home remodel jobs and additions to cabinets and other woodworking projects, Sketchup has been a great tool for quickly seeing things come to life. Probably the only downside, in my view, to Sketchup is that, while you the developer sees everything as just a work in progress, the typical viewer/customer seems to see a model on the screen or in printouts as a finished project that they either like or reject, which can be frustrating at times. I really like this type of video series that explores the behind the scenes thought process that goes into a design. Have you followed the Dashew's and their SetSail series? They are really good about explaining the why.

The Garcia Exploration 45 or 52 come to mind. Jimmy Connors collaborated on the design with Garcia resulting from his experience of many circumnavigations and races. The Sailing Cloie TH-cam channel outfitted and modified a recent Exploration 45 for world cruising particularly in high latitudes. The Daschews built many yachts with safety and short handed sailing being very high priorities, themselves sailing 100k’s of miles.
Rodger Taylor shared his experience of six high latitude expeditions which demonstrated the need for a light wind “ghosting” sail plan as well as the heavy weather storm sailing at certain latitudes. I guess you will have the benefit of examining many competent perspectives on your build.
I’m interested in following your design decision making thought process because it will be the product of your 35 years+ of first hand ocean experience. Best wishes in being successful on your quest. 😎

Check out Kanter Marine in Ontario, they are aluminum and have several designs. They’ll start with their hull and the rest is customizable. For me if I could find a hybrid between the Kanter 66, the Garcia 60, and the Futuna 54. With twin screws that are electric drive with dedicated gensets for each screw that’d be amazing. With centerboard and twin rudders. I think the Futuna 54 pilot house layout is the best set up with a settie on starboard for of watch sleeping. Garcia’s proven robustness I high latitudes, but I don’t care for twin helms. Yet I like the elevated salon and simple things like bringing the anchor chain locker too the foot of the mast and the windlass in a closed compartment. As for the Kanter it seems their fit and finish is high quality, I like the ketch set up. I think I’d convert the exterior helm position to a multi positional tiller. What I mean by that is havin a tiller handle removable like on outremers, that can be indexed on top of the rudder stock to whatever position you want. Whether to helm from the center of the cockpit while handling running rigging or from either aft tack You happen to be on. When on anchor the tiller is stowed and it cleans up the entire cockpit. I’d only have two births and crew bunks. At least a third of the vessel dedicated to machinery house and shop. Grin!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Uniformally great !
You havent had your current boat very long so there must be something you either dont like or really wish you had.
I am going to guess you wish you had a had a pilot house and perhaps an aluminum hull.
I suspect as everyone gets older only having two people for watches is absolutely exhausting and not really doable.
Years ago I did a handful of Mackinac races and even for a mere 3 days it was terrible.
Even with a new beautiful bride the best I could do upon reaching shore was immediately go to a coma like sleep.

I love your videos - they're not just escapist but very practical in making a distant hazy dreams a more realistic and informed consideration. Not that I have a plan to buy a boat in the immediate future, nonetheless I've found myself asking many of the questions you posed in this excellent video (thank you).
I've been drawn to Garcia aluminum boats with their swing keel, probably the 52 over the 45 and the boat your currently own Distant Shores III - the Discovery 48S. However I'm now a little concerned about the ideal seeming Discovery 48S because you're moving on so quickly - whereas you had your previous boats for at least a decade apiece. Do you regret the decision to buy her? Does she represent the culmination of your past experiences and boat decisions - that you now realize you've moved on from to seeking different sailing adventures that she's less well suited for? Is it a question of turning a page on a new chapter of sailing experiences altogether - high latitudes (Alaska etc...), Northern Europe (circumnavigation of the UK and the Baltics etc...) but still being able to get close to shore in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands? Does it boil down to pilot house steering (I went on a trip in a Garcia 45 and really liked that aspect of the boat as well as the inward sloping window which made visibility better). We didn't have much wind so I can't speak to speed. Is Distant Shores III also not fast enough compared to your last boat? Fascinated to hear more about your thought process - hopefully in a future videos. Again thank you for your life changing videos which helped me through the pandemic and took me back to my childhood - when it was considered character forming to make a kid sand hulls and paint anti fouling in Lymington and Villefrance.

My wife and I are new to watching your videos. We are looking to retire in the next two years and have decided to do so on a on blue water cruiser. The bad part is we have no sailing experience. With that being said I do have a lot of boating experience, all in motorized boats. We currently have a 70 foot houseboat that we take out every weekend. We are starting the process of pooling our assets together (including selling our houseboat) and working on learning as much as i can about sailing. Are goal is mostly to sail around the Caribbean Bahama's , USVI, BVI and go from there.
We are both in our early sixty's and wonder if we are crazy for wanting to do this? Both are in good health and good shape......

It has a lot going for it, an aluminum hull, centerboard that allows it to draught only 1.1 meter, it has a pilothouse,70 millimeters of insulation for the interior(it's like living in a big sleeping bag), a very nice interior layout and while she won't be amazing in terms of performance, she's not slow🦥🦥

Hello, I watched your video on designs you are looking at with possible mods.
With regard to the Berk- Myer design you had in sketch up, I would comment that as a lifting Keel ( ostensively a weighted Daggerboard) such a design does not provide for SAFETY on impact and I do realize that at KM 's plant you were shown a extremely thick plate to take the shock.....however ,surprisingly the owner
of the facility did not acknowledge the rotational leverage shock imposed on the standing rig!) When designing in Sketch up without the mast moment
you miss out on the FEA moment loads.
In the other yacht it showed a centerboard Keel which does not provide
for the movement of the Center of Effort
and effect on the helm moving aft.
Additionally, there is the large open slot
to detract from the hydrodynamic flow
has a nominal load point and a single
Pivot pin ( typically needing to be serviced from under the water line.)
There also is the lifting capable inducing drag ( noted it could be hydraulic).
Conversely, to the large slot of the center board ( or centerboard /keel) there still remains the fitted profile of a lifting keel or a weighted daggerboard both which should have a crush box to negate the shock of impact.
I would like to apprise you to the benefits
of SCABBOARDS : which maintain the slot of a dagger board but unlike same
ROTATE upon contact with flotsum or submerged reefs & or running up on beaches. SCABBOARDs do not have to project beyond the keel line but can
Be incorporated into a keel section.
SCANBOARDs can be serviced above deck as well as removed above deck!
I sincerely hope I can engage you in a conversation about appendages as well as your other specific design needs.

Thank you for your prompt response.
May I inquire the type of boat and the SPICIFIC design of Cebterboard. I ask this as most all Centerboards are a single pivot pin and require service by going on the hard in a board yard.
Additionally, the center of effort moves aft as it pivots in an arch radially.
This also candles the cross section of the foil ( basically canceling the shape)
I so much want to introduce you to the benefits of a SCABBOARD and the SAFETY factor offered. The fact that a SCABBOARD not only is self tending but it can be withdrawn to any percentage of exposure without losing its foil shape nor moving the center or effort aft effecting the helm balance. I would love to be able to E mail you more specific details about this and various other parameters.

As a hobby, I can easily buy small titanium alloy plates from online shopping platforms, and DIY small things I like, such as mouse pads and personalized nameplates attached to the keychain.

@@DistantShoresTV I would advice to go with only 1 seachest, so only one bluewater in and out take or minimise it to two. Aswell as bring them up above the waterline before adding a manifold, and a cofferdam around them. For the engine I am thinking of hull cooling, (using the hull as a heat exchanger) this way eliminating points of leaks/failures.
Downside of one seachest is that your brownwater and blackwater could mix with your blue water intake, so it would require flushing or a seperate intake and outake seachest. Above waterline outakes may also be a concideration.

I realize you have thousands of followers and the effort of producing your show ( even with support staff ) is daunting.
However , since your last response stating "you are going to have a lifting keel" I thought you could find the time to educate yourself to the comparative safety and performance difference between a dagger board type design as you had shown in SKETCH UP and the advantages of a self tending & fully adjustable SCABBOARD. The advantage of a SCABBOARD is it takes up just a nominal increase in the top if the trunk but in trade it does not require a crash box not the thickened exit plate to take
the crash shock ( transferring the shock in a radial forward moment to the standing rigging) instead, SCABBOARD
pivots and simultaneously lifts up & out
of hard way ( without damage to the rigging , hull , or board). Over the many
Century of sailboat history there have been only three basic appedages for
election: keels , daggerboards& centerboards ( or some variant)
but now there is a 4th option.
    Prior to your construction let's
    have a design conversation.
    Looking forward to your time
    Sincerely

      Thanks for your comment.
Sorry if it wasn't clear in the video but we are not seriously considering a vertical lifting daggerboard for the new boat. As you say a daggerboard style has high shock loads if accidentally grounded. For us one of the main reasons for wanting a shallow draft sailboat is to explore the shallow areas. That's why we have had a swing-keel on 3 different boats. We are planning to have a version of swing keel on the next one too!
      Cheers
      Paul

Are you considering rigs other than Bermudan? Self standing masts might allow quicker & easier transition to canal mode, and heretical choices like junk rigs allow easy and rapid reefing, which increases safety. Check out Red Dog Sailing for an interesting set of choices.

Interesting video, like all your videos. I am really looking forward to the final result. Even though our boat is a Beneteau Oceanis 40 which is located in the Chesapeake Bay, we always looked at boats with shallow draft options. Also, due to well-known reasons, we would choose aluminum if we could.
I am sure you know that the new Pelagic 77' (Skip Novak) is currently built at K&M, they are excellent boat builders, and we have considered them at one point during our boat buying process. We also have considered Boreal and Alubat.
It is probably internationally not really well known, but an excellent aluminum boat builder is the boatyard Benjamins in northern Germany (www.aluminium-yachten.de) and they work together Berkemeyer naval architect (www.berckemeyer-yacht.de/) which created some interesting designs. NO, I do not have any affiliation with either of them.
Again, we are curious about what you as very experienced cruisers will choose at the end.
