No mention at all of losses through 220v inverters, when running mains powered devices from the ships battery bank. Replacing your electrical devices with 12 or 24 volt DC versions will save you a lot wasted of energy. The biggest anachronism in this respect is powering your 19v laptop, from a 220v adapter, that is connected via an inverter to a 12/24v battery system.

Im a commercial electrician but i have never worked on a before, but if you understand electricity you understand electricity. A friend called me and said she was watching TV on her boat for about an hour then all the power shut off and the individual breakers started reading reverse polarity. this should be impossible considering no work has been done. The main breaker has 120V to ground and is not reversed when i checked. I can see the hot coming off the main output into the input of the other breakers but i ran out of time and didnt check the reading, but im pretty sure its correct. What would be the next thing you would check? Im assuming its a equipment problem somewhere not a wiring problem
We are looking at buying/building a boat in Europe. We would eventually want a US boat after using for a year in Europe. A video on Euro vs US AC Power with the issues of adapting back and forth an the option for converting/rewiring to permanently change the boat would be GREAT!!! We are looking at several European wired boats that would need something done when we bring it home to the US. Thanks so much for this series.
Interesting idea for a show Harley. We were not planning to bring our boat to USA so didn't install a 120V charger... then we decided to sail up to Chesapeake for Hurricane Season :-( anyway its no problem since our solar panels give us almost all we need...

Where are the best places to shop in Europe? We still have not found anything like defender in Europe. And what country’s are best to have equipment shipped to and what country’s are best to get work done. Thanks.
Thanks Ice Bear :-) We found the UK was easy with great sailboat shops especially on the south coast where so many yachts are based. France also had a lot of support for boaters too but for me with my lousy French it was a bit more difficult. The best part about Europe is that with complete free trade between the countries its super easy to shop online and have packages sent directly - no customs or special duties to delay ordering. So you have easy access to all Europe to order online from ... We didn't find anything like Defender either but if you have Amazon plus the online chandleries (www.force4.co.uk www.accastillage-diffusion.co.uk www.bigship.com) In France U-Ship and Big-Ship were two good chandleries located in many port areas. Not sure they have English websites though.

I think it was a good choice attacking it in watt hours vs amp hours. I've been trying to explain this to my parents with the solar and inverter setup on their boat. Its plenty clear to me as an engineer but trying to get them to understand has been tough, I've found watt hours to get through a little easier but we're still working on it. I'm going to send my dad this video and maybe it will make it clearer for him than I'm explaining it.

Renato Fernandes Ah tells you nothing unless you know the voltage. Gadgets on a boat are often 230/110, 12 and or 24 volt. Therefore you collect the data of how much power (Watts) you consume. To simplify, imagine a water hose. The thickness is Amps and speed of water is Volt. The amount of water coming out is Watts. And one big bucket can be equivalent to 1kWh. The fist task is to find out how many buckets of water you are using. He explained that very well in my opinion, much better than other sailing channels. I won’t go further as the next step will be explained in next episode. Cheers and I hope I did not confuse more😉

Really great video! My wife and I consume a similar amount of tea as you do, and our battery bank isn't up to an electric kettle. We use an Origo methylated spirits cooker and to heat our kettle and the cost is negligible.

Thanks Piotr. We had a transformer installed on our previous 230V boat which worked pretty well in 110V lands. Some people just add in a 110V charger and let the inverter provide the power to the boat at 230

Obviously there’s significant savings offshore but build quality has to be paramount. If it’s all to expensive I’ll go for a Antares or similar.
