This is definitely a treasure of cinema; I remember watching it because of the comedic sense but ended up crying; such a heartwarming story that I wish more people got to see. Definitely worth to watch 👌🏼

Kdramas too Tunnel was a damn emotional roller coaster ride. I watched the Thai Renake and loved it, but it brings home how dramatic the original really is. Same with Voice.

For those who wonder what this movie is about, it's a story about the friendship between an elderly woman boon and a civil servant. Ok-boon, the elderly woman and main character, becomes interested in the servant because he can speak English fluently and he eventually helps her learn how to speak the language. Her skills are then used to testify to US House of Representatives about her experience as a victim of sex slavery when she was younger.
The story is based on the US House Resolution No. 121, where the US demanded a formal apology from Japan after Korean women who were victims of Japan's sex slavery between Japan's colonization and WWII testified to the US against Japan for those actions (see comfort women). Although the real testimonies were actually done in Korean, rather than English as the elderly woman did, the movie shows the real footage of the actual Korean women talking about their experiences.
The title has a double meaning, as it represents how Ok-boon is able to learn and speak English, and it also symbolizes the courage and bravery of sexual assault/sex slavery victims speaking out.

Just watched this, albeit without subtitles. very moving, and tells an important story.
also I didn't realise it was based on a real woman and her story and testimony, shows a quick summary and pictures at the end.

People, i strongly recommend this movie, I was very surprised to see an breathtaking, eye-catching, marvelous movie made in Korea. So many times I cried, and laugh, it made me fell disgust on the Japanese army.

i showed this to my younger boy who is reluctant to learn english. i said..see...this old lady put up lot of effort to master it and she could do it!but i dont expect this movie would go deeper. reminding me the stories being shared by my granpa n granny when i was young.

I knew just from watching the trailer that this is gonna raise the issue about the comfort women. Ever since I found out about that part of history during the second world war, I've always wondered why there aren't a lot of films and documentaries about it. And finally! Korea's brave enough to make a movie that highlights the issue. It just wasn't brought up or talked about a lot and so not a lot of people knows about it. It's very sad what happened to these women, and there's so many of them all over Asia and yet no justice yet for them. The last remaining survivors are getting older by the year and I pray to God they see justice or get some kind of compensation from Japan for what happened to them before they all die. :(

This movie fucked me up in the most painful but beautiful way. Had so much to think about in terms of Korean history and identity after the credits rolled. 10/10 recommend for any mature audiences but definitely a trigger warning for historical trauma, torture, rape.
