    Stoicism appeals scientific mind, whereas, Taoism appeals spiritual mind.

      That’s not really the case… the Stoics were traditionally mystics and polytheists / animists. Modern western appropriation of stoicism doesn’t match its actual philosophical and political baggage.

      You do not understand Taoism well. If you go deeper into Taoism teaching then you will realise that the line between science and spirituality will become blur and become less distinct between them.

    I follow Tao-Stoi, not to be confused with Tolstoy. It's a combination of the two, which allows you to mix and match the whatever aspects of both you feel are essential to suit your own way of life.

    I think Taoism gives a more holistic view of why, where as stoicism gives you more of the how. Sometimes if you the why, you will derive the how your own way that is more authentic to oneself, but if understand the how without good definition of why, you might not able to get consistent results.

    I lean more towards Taoism at this point in my life. Though, I do appreciate logic. If I had to identify with anything, (though I don't) it would probably be as a Taoist (excluding the rituals).

      What a lot of people don't know about Taoism is that it was created as 'The Way' (a philosophy) but, later it was considered as a religion by a large mass of the Chinese and as soon as that happened, rituals and dogma crept into the practice of Taoism... so , it can be followed as purely a philosophy, OR as a religion (together with the dogmatic element) , but there is a distinction between the two and it's important for people to know that.

      @wooshifgay462 They aren't seperated and has NEVER been historically, that seperation is tight with purpose of missionary of the last century, which is considered insignificant and unworthy thoughts when it's come to modern day academy. Everyone has more than a master degree in researching Daoism like Louis Komjathy for example, has exposed that.

    Stoicism & Taoism is like 2 blind men touching a big elephant, 1 of em touching the trunk & another touching the tail. They're basically "touching" the truth, with different style (western logic & eastern wisdom). Both philosophies are actually "smaller parts" of one bigger truth.

    Not doing anything in Taoism is a misleading idea I think. Things are still done but the doer makes no distinction between this and that. There is still action in the moment but without judgement. There is nothing to let go of or hold on to.

    Daoism's objection to animal sacrifice is actually an objection to Confucianism's rituals, as Confucians believe that observing traditional rituals (especially the Zhu's animal sacrifice) is a way to cultivate virtue.

      @@inchbyinchstories That the world is unpredictable, that changes are always close at hand. How short our lives really are, and how little influence we have on the future. How best to behave in these circumstances - or, how to be in control and determined. But what emerges above all is that our dissatisfaction and unhappiness often arise because we focus on the wrong things, and the latter is very important for western culture as we focus on material and social media and other unimportant things...

    This isn't an accurate description of Taoism. For one thing, there is no god in Taoism. Another thing is Taoism does follow logic, but its truths are intuited by experiencing life and observing it from a bigger perspective. And wu wei is not about doing nothing, it's about effortless action, to be so attuned with yourself or so in the moment that your actions feel effortless. Like flow state.

    • @HolyFox2024
      @HolyFox2024 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In fact they do have god. Taoist acknowledge existence of gods, deities and evils from multiple cultures (you can apply it to your culture as well), they use them as ways to give interesting story to spread their Taoism meaning behind it.

      @@HolyFox2024 that is religious Taoism which is a mixture of Chinese folk traditions. Taoism itself (based on the core texts of the philosophy, like the Tao te Ching or the zhuangzi) does not require a god or gods.

    • @HolyFox2024
      @HolyFox2024 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@georgied8110 Nope, there are never seperated. Daoism don't have a united author, people call Lao Tzu as a author of it mainly to praise his Daoist contributition and far from what youtube and mass popular try to convince you, Lao Tzu isn't a philosopher, you can say Chuang Tzu may be close (but don't strictly fit to the "philosophy" by western word) but Lao Tzu is a much more balanced figure that contain both philosophy and religious elements in his text. The problem is there are alchemical texts that is massively influence Daoism called "Nei-yeh" also has somewhere the same age of Dao De Jing contain certain religious elements either, further more there's a text of He Guan Zi also shown hint that religious aspects of Daoism has been alway stay mixed with its teaching aspect. Russell Kirkland "The Enduring Tradition" book is a great text that expose a lot of lies written with a lot of personal thought to serve the missionary, combine with the Neo-Confucian officers which is quite hostile to Daoism and try to explain them to gain reputation for their side during the 18th-19th century translators. These thoughts don't have recognition in modern academy and highly reputated researchers, you can check out the talking video with Louis Komjathy on DAOI youtube channel to understand more.

    5:13 Where does Daoism say anything about a god?? I've read the Laozi and Zhuangzi and have never encountered any mention of anything roughly relating to a deity... Absolutely nothing. Other than the phrase "Mother Dao", which is meant completely to refer to nature as a whole, and specifically the creative parts of nature, not a literal "Mother Dao".Daoists believe in an order to the universe, which often manifests itself in a nebulous way. Things are the way they are, whether we'd like them to be that way or not. In some ways, it has some things in common with stoicism, but also things which it interprets in a completely different way.

    • @HolyFox2024
      @HolyFox2024 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since when did Daoism is all about Laozi and Zhuangzi are considered the Bible? Do they call themselves creating Daoism? People give them that title "founders" to praise them but Daoism itself isn't that simple but rather a product of generations that is both before Laozi and Zhuangzi and after, that's the problem with people encounter it.

    There are more to these two than is mentioned here. For example their common attitudes towards faith and gods, or God. The gods they believe in are different, Hellenistic Stoics believed in the gods of Olympus and Taoists believe in The Divine Bureaucracy (and Christian Stoics in Christ), but they both look on piety and faith as a good thing.

      Tao means way Folk Taoism means way of folk.Folk in this case meaning "Chinese Folk"Way or tao can be applied to a very vast broad range of things and in the case of Folk Taoism it refers to various religions and rituals which were observed in ancient China which did not necessarily have anything to do with the Tao Te Ching or with Taoism as the most of us know it.Especially if we are not of Chinese descent or do not have strong cultural ties to Chinese people.

      Recognized sects of Daoism such as Quanzhen or Zhengyi does have a strong explaination and understanding on Dao De Jing. Folk belief and Religious Daoism despite largely intersect but they're not the same, Religious Daoism has alway been putting a strong concern and a lot of credit for Lao Tzu. Meanwhile Chuang Tzu's image fade significantly and don't have a lot of impression on religious Daoism, Lao Tzu and the applicant of Dao De Jing still the center of them. Also Religious Daoism and Philosophy Daoism has never been seperated, the Idea of seperating them is historically align with the missionary stuffs of the last centuries when Protestant Christians interpret their scripture and the society simply not letting them to say "Oh this is a valuable religion", rather they try to make it a philosophy (but in fact neither the word "philosophy" has any similar to its teachings). Such thought hold almost no values on modern day academy and most researchers who has more than the master degree understand that is basically a lie, historically they're the same.
