What's funny is that even though in the reboot lara is more innocent, she kills a looooot more people.
Like in the old ones you mainly kill animals, in the reboot, her kill count is in the thousands, and it's barely even mentionned.
This makes it super weird because she acts scared, but enemies are terrified, and you know you can easily kill everyone.
Also, she barely cares about constantly putting her friend who has saved her life many times, in danger
She might actually be the bigger psychopath

I'm going to have to disagree with Vaush's take at the beginning about reboot Lara. The reboot didn't change Lara from being a psycho, they just made the progression take a bit longer. I think Vaush forgets that she didn't kill people in Tomb Raider 1 outside of major moments. In the remake(Anniversary) they made a moment of her first kill at the end. She never started as a murderer, it was always something built up to. Here's some dialogue from Rise of the Tomb Raider:
"Therapist: Would you say that you have control issues, Lara?
Lara: Doesn't everyone? I mean... no one wants to feel out of control, do they?
Therapist: But not everyone has been through what you have.
Lara: I had to take control of the situation... if I didn't then we'd all have died on that island.
Therapist: And did you enjoy taking control?
Lara: You mean killing, don't you? Did I enjoy killing? I did it because I had no choice!
Ana: Lara is avoiding the tough questions. It's hard to tell if she's merely being stubborn, or she's actually frightened of the answers. By the end of this, she may have to face a hard truth about the kind of person she's become."
It's not exactly subtle about it. Then again, that exchange is in an optional audio log.

I think Shadow of the Tomb Raider even made that clear, After she floods an entire village (Innocent people die of course) by taking a cursed artifact, she was warned in advance by an "antagonist".
Hell, just 10 minutes after that cutscene she feels no remorse whatsoever nor its represented in a dialogue option.

I think it's a tricky topic sometimes, because you can have an empathetic well emotionally regulated human with no issues, BUT THEN also purely as part of the gameplay, have them murdering the fuck out of everyone. The player is supposed to compartmentalise the story telling from the gameplay in a lot of cases. So character judgements should more so be based on the story/narrative they are trying to tell, rather than the gameplay itself.

I have zero evidence to back this up, but I fully believe Lara Croft's gargantuan chest was actually unintentional. I mean, they had an extreamly low amount of polygons to work with. Her chest was a single square block. Imagine trying to give a Lego person a chest with a single block and then NOT have it come across as though you're giving her a giant rack.
Sure, maybe with some more work and better textures you could do a better job nowadays, but I genuinely believe they did the best they could to make an average athletic women. It just came across the wrong way to anyone who doesn't stare at polygons all day.
But then, the marketing team ran with it. They made the box art and that render for the commercial. And the rest is history. Sure, that's what Laura Croft became, but I genuinely think she had modest intentions at first.

We all want the sociopath Lara back 😢😢 tho I don't think Lara is intentionally racist in the OG games, she just doesn't give a fuck.
Also I always felt like Lara is driven because of her desire to know everything, to know all the secrets of the world, rather than material gains. She is rich anyway, and she was also obviously an adrenaline junkie. 😅 I also always saw her as someone who started out on the path she is as a way to rebel against her aristocratic upbringing, and then she keeps going down on a darker path as she goes along ending with her death in TR4.
Also I want to add Lara's original backstory: she is an aristocrat engaged to some guy. Her airplane falls down in the Himalayas and she is the only person who survives the fall. After surviving on her own and escaping the Himalayas Lara find her old aristocratic life boring and unengaging, she blows off her engagement, gets disowned by her family, and starts a life of adventure, financing herself from the traveling books she releases based on her adventures.
I honestly don't think OG Lara wasn't deep enough, it's just crystal dynamics didn't bothered to look deep enough

There's so many continuity errors and the original timeline it's not even funny. In the intro of Troon Raider Angel of Darkness she killed Von Croy because she claimed that he left her to die to die at the end of Tomb Raider the last revelation. The last line of that game was Von Croy literally saying but he'll be back for her. Tomb Raider Chronicles is pretty much a clip show with Von Croy and his colleagues telling stories about her Anna morning her supposed death. The cool thing about classic Lara is that she had an amazing childhood and still ended up being a psychopath. This is realistic because real life psychopaths mostly come from average to great homes. It's a hollywood trope that a person becomes evil or a badass because of some childhood trauma. In real life people just choose to be badasses or evil killers.

Vaush said he played the new ones, but I wonder if he played all the way through Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The reboot trilogy kind of has a long arc across all three where she starts as a college student and hesitates after she kills somebody for the first time, but by the third game, she's started to fully embrace her psychoticness. Hell, even in the first game, she ends up stealthily swimming through a pool of blood and is hardly shaken.
Obviously he has nostalgia for the old ones, but I think the new ones are great. Also find it funny how he says it should ditch the Uncharted influence, even though Uncharted was inspired by Tomb Raider in the first place.

@@isafatcat I would say it is worth it, it's my personal favorite of the recent three. However, it is pretty different from the other two. Much less combat encounters, much more focus on exploration. There are more tombs, and much more of an emphasis on traversal. Shadow also has the best combat of the three games (which makes it sad because you barely get to engage in combat.) There are so many different ways you can kill enemies, you can drag them underwater and snap their neck or shoot them from a perch in a tree and string them up like some Predator-type shit. Also, there's the new mud-covering feature, which somehow makes the combat encounters feel more gritty and badass. Traversal is also greatly improved, and it is genuinely fun. The environments are gorgeous, much more so than the other two... Shadow is really one of the best looking modern games out there. As for the story, it's nothing special. Pretty much the same as the other two games. Lara is also grittier and a bit more of a psychopath, she's evolved to properly fit her role as an archaeologist/rambo-killer.
I really don't get why people rag on Shadow so much, maybe just because it is more experimental than the other two. Overall, I would recommend it if you found some enjoyment in the other two games, and you enjoy more puzzles (they're also more difficult in Shadow), less but better combat, more exploration and improved traversal, and beautiful Jungle environments.

She should be okay with killing by at least the second game with how many she kills, but she instead isn't.

She wasn't originally a colonial british aristocrat, she started out as lara cruz a latin woman but the devs changed it for some reason and made her how she is. maybe to be more relateable since it was an english company. Other than that in her backstory she really did have a real interest in ancient cultures and when she fully committed to it her family disowned her. Watching many of the early films like 'Dr. No,' I got the impression that Bond only accepted the mission largely due to the appealing location because it seem like he just treats his missions as vacations. Additionally, his demeanor suggests that he only sabotaged Dr. No's plans not out of a love for the world or concern for people, but rather to irritate his adversary and increase his allure to the woman he was with 😂.
So not a good person but definitely a cool one

It's pretty obvious that a lot of people haven't played Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary/Underworld, because those games were aiming to be slightly modernized takes on Lara Croft with some influence from the films bleeding in. Lara is a wealthy, sadistic sociopath. That's the character as she existed in the early games and the LAU reboot. The 1995 design document describes her as "a modern day adventurer and procure of rare artificats which she relieves from Johnny Foreigner with the gay abandon of a five-year-old stealing Mars Bars from the local cornershop."
The Doppleganger in the LAU trilogy further emphasizes this idea. The Doppleganger is a refined version of Lara Croft. Even more gleefully sadistic. Even more in disdain of humanity at large. People talk about how modern Tomb Raider is "a prequel and it's building up to that". No it's not. Modern Tomb Raider is not building up Underworld Lara in any conceivable fashion. Classic Lara is not intended to be a "relatable" protagonist, but being "relatable" to their target audience, a kind of girl power symbol, has defined the modern take on the character. Now I'm not opposed to different takes on a character. I like Nolan/Goyer/Snyder Superman, for example. But the problem with Tomb Raider is people kidding themselves that the past trilogy of games was trying in any way to be a prequel to Legend/Anniversary/Underworld. It just wasn't. Lara's characterization in Shadow is completely wrong. It doesn't logically lead into Legend. It isn't turning her into an extremely wealthy woman who gleefully kills people who have material possessions she desires.

  • @Siberius-

5:40 - Totally agree with this video. Bring back Dom Lara. The reboot is good on it's own, I like the character and design, but it's not Lara. I don't remember the movies, but Angelina Jolie is so perfect for the role (appearance wise). I remember her version being pretty fitting of the games... I don't really remember though.
Edit: Okay it seems Lara wasn't quite intended to be a psychopath per se, at least she didn't start out that way, and I dunno if she ended up that way or if that's just gameplay, which is different from the story-telling/narrative that we are maybe supposed to be focusing on instead. Beats me! I don't know enough.

You know what? I think a backstory that would make more sense for Lara is if her mom was a dragon - and I mean as in belonging to the same class of drains that Smaug does mythologically, except the dragon that was Lara's mother hoarded things because they knew they were dangerous (or at any rate the dragon that was Lara's mom did) and of course said dragon had shapeshifting powers. And of course Lara follows in mom's footsteps, and being half-dragon herself, that's why she has the advanced strength (and why her weapons controls work the way it does). And of course the fact that the surrounding society is racist means nobody questions what anyone in this dragon family is up to.
And of course this would mean that Lara is an asshole in the same vain as her mother the Smaug-class dragon, except by the standards of Smaug-type dragons, hoarding things while prioritizing the dangerous items to keep them from people IS empathetic, and would also make sense if it was from the same universe as Middle-earth was once in and the reason a few dragons started this is because they believe that the Ring should have been hoarded in a cave to keep it from people, not thrown into the volcano because the dragons believe that destroying objects like this do not solve the problem because the energy released from the objects has to go somewhere and maybe this didn't happen for a while because that dragon had been put to sleep, was woken up, and eventually went on to groom a half-dragon human to do this work because turns out a full-blooded dragon isn't suited for it, and that half-dragon is Lara.
And of course that would also be why Lara has no problem killing the last of a species - the family history says that versions of this are even bigger sociopaths (and they haven't forgotten the Balrogs, try to talk the dragon out of doing those killings and they will mention the Balrogs to shut you up).

People nowadays don't get it but OG Tomb Raider IS Playstation. The thing about the Playstation is that it didn't feel like a toy when you turned it on. It felt like touching the systems panel on a million year old alien spaceship you found in an abandoned mine. Tomb Raider is weird and esoteric. It's dangerous and hostile to life. It's like looking up at the piramids and being left speechless because it's impossible to understand what you are looking at and why it's there. Tomb Raider is supposed to be alienating and harsh. It's an extreme and scary work of art that makes you feel insignificant in an unknowable universe. It's important that Lara has a lack of empathy because when you open a ten thousand year old crypt buried, two hundred miles from civilization a thousand feet beneath a mountain you're supposed to feel wonder and awe and the realization that if you died right now no one would ever find your corpse. You aren't supposed to feel empathy.

You could use it to highlight the resource and power of the super wealthy, and use Lara to show how her wealth is comparatively low compared to the billionaire antagonist, and you can also use contrasting side characters to highlight the fallacy of the overly woke and compassionate. But ultimately, it should be an anti-story, in the sense that she doesn't grow and change as the sequels roll on. She just finds herself increasingly isolated and cut off by increasingly more enemies.

I didn't play the OGs. However my issue with the reboot isn't that Lara is not a psychopath, or not psychopath enough, it's that the writers constantly jump between the two without ever making a final decision. (Spoilers)
Just take the 1st game, She starts off as a spoiled orphan and college student, but is suddenly thrown into the real dark shit; murderers, sadists, paranormal stuff, she loses a bunch of friends and quickly becomes a killer. Throughout the game she seems to genuinely want to keep her friends safe and get off the island, but once they do get off, she looks at her dad's journal, smirks, and says: "I'm not going home."
So which is it? Is she traumatized from the horrible experienced she just went through, or is she suddenly a psychopath and violence junky looking for her next fix?
This becomes a recurrent problem in the next 2 games. She seems to genuinely want to help the prophet and keep the grail away from the baddies, but at no point does she express trauma nor enjoyment.
And in shadow, it just gets ridiculous. She jumps from predator mode covered in mud, killing thugs like it's nothing, to sweet talking children, to going on fucking rampages, to get scolded by her friend and feeling like shit. And she kills who knows how many people by triggering the end of the world, only to end up casually drinking tea back home without a care in the world, just what is going on?
They could've easily gone either way. Personally I feel it would've made us sympathetic towards her if it was clearly established that will all the trauma she's been through, she can't get a grip, and her life only makes sense when she puts it on the line. But hey, they could've just have her reach kratos levels of psychopath and carelessness, that would've been fun too!

I don't get why he likes this idea of old Lara so much lol she's not relatable on any level to average people. I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that he thinks that's an enticing protagonist to play as and my bimbo brain just can't connect the dots.

New Lara Croft should have been a completely different character.
I hate Kunimitsu in Tekken Tag 2 and Tekken 7
But I feel better knowing it's just a relative of the classic character.
They should have done that here, let Lara hang up her adventuring gear and introduce a daughter or something lol
Instead they had to take away all the things that made old Lara awesome. She used to be a femme fatale Indiana Jones meets a Bond Villain who always gets away, and the universe always struck my to be something like Tintin or Jumanji or something like that, I was fine with it not being Photo realistic.
I never wanted the women around me to be like PS1 Lara Croft, so all this crap about setting unreasonable standards for women that you hear these days is just dumb.
What is wrong with the world.

What you describing is basically Tomb Raider Legacy Trilogy, where Lara would froze in mid air during a shoot out, if you jump from a enemy, kill everything in sight and fall down to the ground, or jump from any surface aiming to an enemy, it would go slow mo, while shooting, this mechanic could be exploited to shit if you are in a room full of enemies, and Lara was equally detached in those games as they are in this games.

Naw, nostalgia doesn't blind you if you take the time to look past it and see if the game actually holds up. My least favorite thing about acrobatic shit in modern games is how everything is marked with yellow or white lines to hand hold you through everything. You never have to wonder where to go next because there’s neon highlights to show you exactly what to jump/run to next

    • @saltking2715
      @saltking2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

i disagree, dont wanna be running around bigger and bigger games to jump every cliff just to see if this is the point that the developer wanted me to go up or if its just another dead end, mirrors edge was horrible in that regard. What i could do less with is the automatic latching to stuff, most of the time you just have to steer in the vague direction and the protagonist will do a flip dive onto a ledge that you couldnt even see

    • @GwynC
      @GwynC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@saltking2715 you're imagining taking a game with those handholdy markings and simply removing them without changing anything else. This wouldn't work because these games aren't designed to not have them. If a game was built from the ground up not to hold your hand- like Breath of the Wild for instance- it wouldn't need to explicitly mark every hand and foothold you have to climb.
Rather than giving you a single marked route, the devs could invest time in designing the levels to naturally direct you to the right paths. This has been done very well before. New Vegas is a great example; the world is designed in such a way as to show you Vegas immediately upon being set loose, so you go straight toward it cuz of course you do. The game knows you're probably going to try the direct route on a blind run and it makes that path nearly impossible to show you right away that there are some places you just aren't equipped to go yet. There's no big yellow line you have to follow and it works.

I don't think so; and I don't think *she* would as a character either; if anything, in fact: being a bully is something she'd find distasteful and unfeminine- yet she *does* deal with some cruel types; and that *would* lead to some hardness on her part.

Lara Croft went from being this capable bad ass chick to being this overly emotional, but still equally psychotic person.
The change was due to the creators wanting the player to feel protective over new Lara.
In the original Tomb Raider, you *were* Lara Croft.
