Seen this beast at NEFR. It stands out so much as a unique old rally car and looks awesome ripping through the stages. Awesome to see a breakdown of it and see what it's like from the inisde, this is why I love these videos
Yes! Agreed! I had an 03 vibe from 0 miles until it literally internally annihilated the trans at 378,000..(it only read 299999..) it was a great little thing, tough as nails, slow as frozen mud on take off but even into the 300k's I could still get it to 128mph.. eventually. 😅 and 29mpg. Never had an issue until whatever trans thing went bang. Then it wasn't worth fixing.. 😢 But I'd bet I could have run that course pretty damn quick in it... Brick the right pedal and tiptoe the left foot to steer! Great car.
@@jeremylutz6893 I thought the Pittsburg town farm was going to be a nice open area with easy public parking, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. The road that lead up there was super slushy and muddy, and my car is an open diff RWD GS300. Had to get some help from my friends who I was with in the car to jiggle it free when I tried to turn it around at the top of the hill where it widens a bit. Very pretty place though. We ended up watching from the full send bar and grill instead.
@@gerarddip Oh nice, I too daily a GS300, also open diff lol. It's low af right now though, and I'm thinking about bring it up an inch or two so I can take it on maintenance roads.
@@angelsfallfirst7348 Mine is stock everything, but I’d love to put some nice BBS mesh rims on there, but moments like these really make me second guess how good of an idea lowering my car by any amount would be!
@@gerarddip Yeah, I have mine set up on Teins for light autocross. While I definitely recommend putting stiffer coils on and beefier sway bars etc. I do think extreme lowering is more trouble than it's generally worth for daily driving if you're not taking it to the track.
WOW!!!!!!! I am so impressed! Best video I have seen for a long time. I am a AMC fan from Norway and own a 69 AMX. The car looks really good as a rally car and that you still have the AMC engine is just great!
Just further inspiration I need to build my 1971 Dodge Demon into a stage rally car. Starting slow with rally cross and perhaps TSD this year, but I have a vision and this video just helps with that.
There is a guy in Irwindale. He had kind of done up Camaro. It was a video like this on TH-cam. During COVID there was this engine and transmission laying around in his dad's shop. (Irwindale raceway in California is in the neighborhood) The guy was able to pop this in his Camaro. He said he would not be able to afford it himself. He is quite young. Bet the car was kind of prepared and everything. Really nice not like a clunker...really nice. Those tranny's there like the ultimate rock crusher or slick shift set-up one might do with Chrysler transmissions. Not for everyone as the guy mentioned here. But inspirational all the same. This AMC is tops though. A great retirement present for yourself I might add. I Love it. Did you get a look at this thing? It would be a drag if he really pulled it up. Lots of work went into this. That AMC was touted in advertisment back in the day as a sort of Vette eater...I don't know about this ..at least it was less apt to literally break in half.
This is exceptionally awesome. I was always a fan of the Japanese rally cars like the Datsuns and this is really hitting that 240Z vibe for me! Love what you guys do
Talking about a unique rally car this is more of a forza build but thats what makes it even more fun taking stuff that normally doesn't rally rallying musta felt like bo duke driving it XD
hey guys, i wonder if you ever thought about rallying in a bentley. and moreso the older models like the bentley brooklands? would be really awesome lol
When I get the V8 Capri done I’ll bring it over to you and see how it does versus the V6 Capri. It’s the same but with a V8 and a tremec 5 spd. I’ll let you know Wyatt when it’s done. Putz
Needs an aluminum big cube V6, a rear-CV transaxle(Corvette layout), and de-dion rear suspension. Making it lighter and improving the weight balance should help with braking quite a bit. The modern 4.3 (called the LV3) if you build it as David Vizard builds his engines should be able to put down over 370hp at the tire and that engine weighs roughly 75%-80% what an all aluminum LS does, so under (well under, even) 400 pounds fully dressed, which is a far cry from the presumably 520+ pound iron V8 this car has, now.
If you just wanted to build "an American car" for rally, why not a Cavalier or Cobalt? I mean, I know it wouldn't be as cool, but it would be a lot more sensible. I had a '93 Sunbird (Cavalier rebadge) for my first car, and it combined very tossable handling with a physics-defying ability to all but ignore road conditions. I've never seen anything else that handled snow like it. I looked it up on Automobile-Catalog and a stock 1970 AMX, with the 390 and 4-speed manual, has a quoted weight of 3219lb
Hey, we all know American muscle cars can rally, we watched the Dukes of Hazzard rally a Dodge Charger for years - some say they were the first and only Dodge factory WRC team 😉😅
The Leaderboard is now also on our website: teamoneil.com/will-it-rally/
Man you never really see Wyatt out of his comfort zone, but this AMX really did it lol. Awesome video, y’all are the best!

Team O’Neil - BEST driving course I ever took
Id love to see you try to rally an AWD Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. The AWD system isn't the best in them but they are pretty fun to zip around in.

Agreed, interested to see how an older part time AWD system like that would handle rallying.
Fucking great shout dude. Basically a tall Corolla
Drifted a Pacer and Hornet around the snowy streets of 1980's NH, they didn't stop well either, in any weather!!
I had a bit of a rally experience when the GPS sent me down a one-lane dirt road in Pittsburg NH when I was tryna see the eclipse!

The 63 Ford Galaxie (and similar cars) which seem to have some popularity in Swedish rallying.

There's always something badass about American muscle just tearing down a rally stage.
Whats been done to the suspension to have it land like it did (beginning of vid)

Glad you didn't mess up the bosses car,Wyatt. lol
these roll off the factory under 3000lbs, what the hell did they put on this thing to make it nearly 4k is beyond me.
Keep in mind though, this vehicle has a roll cage, a big steel skidplate underneath, and heavy duty suspension.
Looks like surprisingly stiff suspension for a rally car. Also just a hilarious and cool idea for a build.

How can that car weigh more than my stock 69 AMX ????
