I learned handstand for the first time at age 60! We are never too old. I can still only kick up against a wall, but I can stay up for nearly a minute now and my confidence is growing. Soon I will be able to start trying in the middle of the room. I will get there.
If you are afraid of falling and need to work on balance, you can do handstands in the water! I do this in pools or at the beach or the lake, and you can progress by trying it in more shallow spots. I think around hip height is a good place to start! (it's also easier on the wrists, as you don't have to carry your whole bodyweight)
yep! i’m a swimmer and whenever we swim open water there’s a more shallow spot and we always practice a little there, one of my friends has progressed out of the water, but the rest of us are still in shallow water. i must advice you to not go too deep, because then you have to consciously swim down and it becomes hard to keep your hands on the ground
When I was a kid I could do handstands and walk on my hands but it’s been a long time since then and I’d like to be able to do it again! I’ve been working on my handstands for a couple weeks now and this video couldn’t have come at a better time!

I just did my very first handstand today right after watching your video! What an inspiration you are! I've been meaning to try handstands but I'm always scared of falling. After watching this video and attempting 3x against the wall, I was able to hold my handstand without the wall for a bit on my 3rd attempt! I'll upload the 3 videos and tag you! Thank you so much!
74 years old and thinking about doing a hand stand, but first to build back up my strength and loos 20 lb. of belly. Was in pretty good shape till I hit 70 and went down hill fast. Thanks for the video will work on building my wrists back up one thing I found that worked good was doing knuckle push ups, using just your one knuckle, did start out with two but went to one and found wrists got much stronger quicker using just one knuckle on each hand.
I’ve been doing push ups every day for over a year now, but only recently have I come across callisthenics. I’ve started doing different variations of push ups and I’m gonna start going to a local callisthenics gym next to my house. I’m really motivated to increase my strength and learn new skills and videos like this help a lot. Thank you
I've got to say: you have probably one of the best postures when handstanding I've seen on youtube. Many of the people who do calisthenics videos have a terrible shoulder position, where you can see that they have the strength, but not enough flexibility.
Few days ago I went through the experience of my first falling after a handstand and I must say it is such a relieving experience. I can relate to the last words you've said about dealing with fear of falling by preparing the body in order to feel safety. This is what I've been doing so far. But it was such a great experience of falling and enjoying that fall and then laughing at it. I tried to bring awareness to the body, literally think only about the body (sort of a body scan) and set an intention to what is going to happen (prepare mentally to the fall). Well first it was a cartwheel (also first time ) and then handstands and rolls etc. Thank you for sharing!)

Did you ever experience severe headaches? I've been practising handstands for a while, and thought my brain was getting used to the pressure. But 1 month ago after doing 3-4 times 20 sec against the wall handstands, I got such severe headaches the 2 days after. I've stopped my practice since then... :(
This was so so useful, Lucy! I really appreciate that you listened to your viewers and made videos like this that are so beneficial and encouraging. I hope you know that you inspire me daily xx
I was in the same situation with you like I lost 15 kg and then get some back on, lose some, gain some,...etc. But I realized that just being on a diet and jumping in the house just thinking like losing some calories is not gonna be permanent in my life, and I sicked of this loop. So, started a search for making workouts as a hobby for me. Since I was a former gymnast when I was a kid, I thought that handstands, splits, yoga, a little bit of pilates would be so much fun and helpful for my future, happiness, and for my body. When I found your videos I thought that "I found a soul who had a similar story to mine, who worked for herself, found happiness, and was able to share it with others." and I really appreciate you for that. I hope I can achieve that too. Thank you for this video. 😊
Thank you I love the fact that u say it's hard and not easy Bc I was so discouraged last year when I saw ppl doing it so easily but I couldn't even stay upside down I've started my journey from today TG I came across you now I'm gonna practice bring upside down first and also use the point toes, pelvic tilt and strong core and glutes tip u gave

I love this Lucy, I just started my calisthenics beginner training this week and I tried out practicing doing handstands So awesome Thank you for this video
Great video!! Thank you for this video!! You explain so well. This is the best video I have found for a handstand. This is my goal for 2024. I can’t do the last exercise, I still can’t walk my hands😢
thank you so much for this video, Lucy! I'm just embarking on my handstand journey, and your insights, tips & demonstrations are super-encouraging. it might take a while, but I know it will be worth it! xo

Could you teach more about shoulder mobility? And my problema with handstands is that I can't get to it when I kick off the ground. Is it fear of falling? I can be in a handstand position when I walk into it on the wall and I can headstand :/
Thank you for your video. I'm so happy I discovered your channel. I was really struggling with finding good videos about handstands and I found yours to be helpful.
Did competitive cheer around 8 years ago and learned how to do handstands, I’ve still got that skill but never all that time learned how to stay still and not walk around to rebalance myself. Hopefully I’ll get to a point where I’m not doing a waltz while handstanding lol
Wow your story is inspiring! You did it ALL on your own strength, even losing that much weight is impressive! Don’t know why this came on my feed but just here to say i am proud of you❣️ 43 and not a fully able body so don’t know if i can pull this off lol. When i was young i did those things and was a dancer, we called it the candle:) but now 😅. I am always trying to gain weight (far and muscles), Crohn’s and a lot of surgeries makes holding on to food and processing/absorbing it the right way very difficult. Working out regulary is chellanging as well so i do what i can. Body pump at home, ballet exercises, dance workouts, resistance bands etc. Better something then nothing! And walking my high energy Staffie dog:)
I just recently found your channel and you’ve reignited old dreams and goals to get into calisthenics! Is it helpful to get positioning of the lower body in a head stand while working on improving shoulder strength before I can get into a hand stand, or do you suggest just going for it slowly straight into the hand loading?
Thanks for the video ☺️ Especially the "getting out of a handstand" part was really helpful! I saw you get out of a handstand like that in an insta story and had since been wondering how to do it ☺️
Thank you for all the advice provided! I have just started to take my handstands in the middle of the room and your movie helped me to take the fear of falling out of the question.😜 So, thank you!😘
Someone who talk about the fear of falling, which it's my fear. How long did it take you to do a full headstand and how much did you practice in a week (or day)?
Very nicely explained. Probably one of the best around. I used to be stuck on wall handstands because I was afraid of kicking up in midair but looks like it's a lot safer and easier than it seems. Thanks a lot for the video!
You just crossed my mind today and I thought I need to go back to the video you posted about learning a handstand, I really want to learn it. And voilà - here is a new one!! :-) Thank you so much for this informative and beautifully filmed video, especially the last part with facing the wall and learning how to get comfortable in it (it still freaks me out). I live with many health issues; Fibromyalgia and Bone condition’s being my worst painful condition’s. Even lifting just 2lb weight put’s my wrist’s into severe pain. “I once was a Powerlifter,” until I fell under disabilities that course many back, shoulder and neck issues.
I don’t have the baseline strength to be able to start training handstands, yet. I can’t even do a toes push-up. Can you recommend any exercises to build up the strength I need to support my own body weight?
In order to gain strength for a vertical pressing movement, you would have to regress to a horizontal pressing movement and gradually progress. Pushups done on an incline are best for building beginner pressing strength. Gradually reduce the incline until your hands are on the floor. Once you can successfully perform several sets of flat pushups, start implementing pike push-up variations. The pike pushup has direct carryover to the handstand as your body is in a more vertical line of movement. Once you're comfortable with pike Pushups, you can start placing your feet on an elevated object and do elevated pike Pushups. I know that's a lot, but it would also help to throw in some straight arm balance strength like frog stands and progress to the full crow.
Good job for the weight loss. Truly not easy and it needs courage and perseverance. I loss 70lbs in 6 months so I know what you went through. To lose weight that much I had to run 5-7km + climbing stairs (1020 feet stairs "koko crater") every day during that 6 months. And eating better of course.

You are so inspirational. I have around 2 stone to loose. Seeing you and where you started to where you are now is amazing to see and motivates me so much! I look forward to binges your videos ❤
Tripping over thin air I FELT that. I have a plan for my own journey I was doing handstands in 2020 and I stopped BIGGEST REGRET… I have some push up bars and I have a mental plan I am going to try to get into handstand on it… My original handstand journey i stared kicking up and using the wall as my safe guide… I am soon to be 33 and I am starting over
I attempted a handstand in the backyard. Last time I did a handstand was over 30y ago & nearly 30kg lighter. Nearly gave myself a hernia. Could definitely feel a pulling in ab muscles from the force of trying to get upside down. Never has anything like that in younger lighter days when did handstands all the time
Hi Lucy, first of all, thank you so much for showing a different way of getting out of the handstand, i always thought i cannot do the roll out thing, so I won‘t be able to do the handstand! However, I feel like this technique doesn‘t really work in situations when you‘ve got too much momentum and you fall over on the other side which is why I never do my kicks with enough energy. I barely get up straight although I‘ve got the strength for it just because I‘m afraid of falling over on the other side. „Falling“/Bailing out by doing a cartwheel doesn‘t seem to be a real option at that point, does it? Any suggestions? I don‘t know why but I always think that if I fall over on the other side I‘m gonna break my neck and die... I know ridiculous but it‘s just the way my brain works I guess...
Hi!! This is exactly my fear. I don't know why I got this video recommended (I don't do handstands) but I really enjoyed it and thought of getting back into it. If it helps, I did do handstands when I was a kid and once I was incredibly excited and actually fell the other way, no preparing not anything, just fell right to my back. Well it wasn't great, I don't recommend it as a technique hahaha but it was fine at the end!! So it may help to know that I'm still alive and I didn't break anything hahahhaha 😊
@@celiasaiz3786 Yess go for it!! Yeah i know but i mean kids are kind of unbreakable, right? 😁 But you're right, I guess i should just fall over and experience that I'm not going to die 😅
@@annika4533 hahahhahaha well I'm not one to advice as I know absolutely nothing and kids are a bit unbreakable as you said. Falling over the wrong way probably wouldn't be awesome, but yeah I think sometimes is fear that breaks us. But as I said, I know nothing about this haahahahhaha I can only wish you good luck!!
May i ask, what do you do for a living? You have such a nice flat, amazing hobby, and you look great, so there must be something that provides with all the free time for such activities. You're very cool, but I'm just curious about that
Thank you for this! It’s been a lockdown goal but been a bit discouraged - this and pull ups seem so out of reach! How do you count your handstand training in terms of general fitness training? I know there’s the doing it for the love of it but I need some kinda goal/structure/to know what I’ve done & what I need to rest the next day - eg is 15 mins of solid handstand training like an upper body workout session for the day?
Although being a man, I can relate to a lot you told... Fought Lyme disease and clinical depression; cals and yoga helped me a lot and will help forever. Great content , Lucy and keep being a beast!

Tripping over thin air I FELT that. I have a plan for my own journey I was doing handstands in 2020 and I stopped BIGGEST REGRET… I have some push up bars and I have a mental plan I am going to try to get into handstand on it… My original handstand journey i stared kicking up and using the wall as my safe guide… I am soon to be 33 and I am starting over
Yay! 😁 A handstand video!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🤸🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️❤️
girl, this video is amazing. auto-subscribe ur channel! thank u so much.
I attempted a handstand in the backyard. Last time I did a handstand was over 30y ago & nearly 30kg lighter. Nearly gave myself a hernia. Could definitely feel a pulling in ab muscles from the force of trying to get upside down. Never has anything like that in younger lighter days when did handstands all the time
Thank u it was helpful❤
You're very cool, but I'm just curious about that
I'm going to give this a whirl, will report back once a month to let you all know if I was able to do this! I hope so, always wanted to handstand!
Thank you so much!
i usedto do circus and we had to do wall handstand pushups, i fell and haven't done handstands since. but imma try to do them again
Does it help with weight loss?
She's beautifil 🥺
on your way to your one hand handstand!
Soon hopefully! Thank you!
Although being a man, I can relate to a lot you told... Fought Lyme disease and clinical depression; cals and yoga helped me a lot and will help forever. Great content , Lucy and keep being a beast!
I love your accent
I’m learning right now and my ankle hurts so bad but I still wanna keep trying but I don’t wanna make it worse
