The Tom-Tom Club was Tina Weymouth's solo project during her time with the Talking Heads. What you're seeing here is a clip from the Heads' concert film, "Stop Making Sense". David Byrne left the stage soTina could do her song with her arrangement. The brightly colored background you see is a projection of the Tom-Tom Club's first album cover. It's a great song, isn't it? The whole album is a lot of fun. :)

  • @ronpotts6385
    @ronpotts6385 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mariah Carey sampled "Genius of Love" for her song "Fantasy" in 1995. "Genius of Love" was recorded by Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz, the bass player and drummer of Talking Heads as a side project in between Talking Heads albums. They used the side project , The Tom Tom Club, as a means of exploring dance music. As a result, later Talking Heads recordings became more danceable and rhythm-based. Examples of this include "Burning Down The House" from 1983 and "(Nothing But) Flowers" from 1988.

Great reaction, India! Tom Tom Club was a lot of fun, and as several folks have pointed out, they were also the rhythm section for Talking Heads (and a married couple!) long before and after this. They had another song that was a huge hit in the UK called "Wordy Rappinghood". I'd love to see you react to that one! The whole first album is great, but those are the only two significant hits.
Lyrically, apart from a few comments about a fictional ex who loves her deeply (and also did some time and shared cocaine with her), the song reads as a love letter to geniuses of Black Excellence in music. You picked up on the spoken "James Brown" refrain. The whispered "Bohannon! Bohannon! Bohannon! Bohannon!" bit is a reference to Disco producer Hamilton Bohannon. She also namedrops Kurtis Blow, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Smokey Robinson, Bob Marley, and Reggae super-producers, Sly & Robbie.

I was one of the lucky ones to score the extended mix (on vinyl, of course), as none of the area record stores were able keep it in stock because of the insane demand for it. Our basketball team did their pre-game warm-up while this blasted from some very large speakers set up in the gym. Aaahhhhhh.....precious memories!!

Tina Weymouth, Talking Heads bass player, and her husband, Talking Heads drummer Chris Franz, are Tom Tom Club. This is a studio recording that's super-imposed onto their live stage production in the concert film, Stop Making Sense. In the original live version, she doesn't sing/speak Japanese and the only electronic sound effects are from what the electric organs on the stage are producing. Also, they added a verse and cut some of the footage of Tina dancing with the back-up singers.

As someone else pointed out, it has been sampled to death by damn near every Hip Hop and Rap artist. It is even in many movies. In the song she is saying Bohannon over and over. She is referring to Hamilton Bohannon, who was considered a leading figure of the Disco period. love your reactions. I just want to say what I think is cool as hell is that black american musicians inspired British rock bands like the beatles and the who, who then inspired George Clinton with Parliament-Funkadelic, and the wider afro-futurism movement, who inspired the Talking Heads (who also toured with members of p-funk) and the Tom-Tom Club being an off shoot of the talking heads going on to produce one of the most sampled tracks in hip-hop and rap history. Amazing, so much brilliant music we've seen because of it!

I remember the long version of this back in the early 80s....seemed like it was 15 minutes long! And always was a skating ring jam!!!

Yup, original singers. 1981 was jr. high for me, and my best friend's older teen sister played this from her low-rider.

Hope you one day watch this concert, one of the best ever made/filmed. It set the bar on how concerts were filmed. Plus the actual audio to it is so much better then this overdub.

The percussionist, Steve Scales, had a cameo in the movie Something Wild, with Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith. He played the cashier at the gas station/souvenir shop. That movie featured some David Byrne (Talking Heads) music. The clip: th-cam.com/video/nIuuhtJM_Dw/w-d-xo.html

Yes. The original. The best concert ever: Stop Making Sense. And you get this wonderful surprise. Tina awesome bass player. Had massive crush back in the day. See the whole concert and grow. Then watch David Byrne's American Utopia.

80's music is amazing! I get to listen to so many great songs because my Dad was A D.J in the 80's/90's and he's always playing gems like this one. "Pleasure of Love" is another good song by Tom Tom Club

@@Serai3 This is the Stop Making Sense video, paired with the LP version of the song. Which I actually like, because I don't think that in this performance that the Tom Tom Club were up to the level of the rest of the Talking Heads songs in the concert/movie. But I love the Tom Tom Club.

Read the lyrics along with it ...Its all about the great R&B singers SMOKEY , JAMES BROWN , BOHANAN, BOOTSY COLLINS ...Even Bob Marley and Sly and Robbie ...Etc Everyone she mentions are AMAZING ! That would be fun, do a song by everyone she mentions !

This is the live concert footage overdubbed with the original studio version. THe drummer/founder of the group is actually pretty cheesy on the live track. It's kind of amusing to hear the live track of this song.Hilarious frog dance by Tina in the middle of the song.

TOM TOM CLUB is basically Talking Heads minus David Byrne, even the backing singers worked with Talking Heads.
Whereas Byrne went with more Afican rythmn influences, you can hear the TOM TOM Club went with a more technological sound

This is the same concert movie, _Stop Making Sense,_ that you've reacted to a couple of times already for Talking Heads. They did some of their side projects in the same show. There's also a David Byrne solo song in it as well, _What a Day That Was._ I know people keep on telling you it's the best concert film ever, but it really is.
