I keep seeing cargo capacities measured in tons in Star Wars, but wouldn’t volume make more sense when you’re flying through space? Even if you have to take the ability to haul cargo in and out of gravity wells (planets) into account, we see massive ships do that no problem with their magical repulsor lift tech. Massive cargo tonnage capacities seem less useful if you don’t have the volume.
Not mentioning that "a ton" would mean diffrent things on diffrent planets, depending on the gravity. Measuring the space the cargo it would take instead of it's weight would be much better imo. Well, I guess just means that it's "a ton" according to ship's artificial gravity
They are metric tons, which are based on mass, which engines and hyper drives still have to deal with. (mass is independent of gravity - which repulsor lifts to work against).
It would be interesting to see just how much of a certain cargo you would need to be able to carry to make your fuel worth it. Obviously, less tons of spice than of bantha chops or whatever, but would be a fun analysis.

Something that strikes me as odd with this is that the Baleen class ships, while 4 times the length, carry roughly the same amount of dewbacks in their cargo boxes as the GR-75. Unless the mouth of the ship was crazy, and it might be, this relatively small ship carries several times the Baleen does.
Cool video - love this ship. One thing however - we have to take ANY stats of any star wars ship with a grain of salt - especially based upon the various sources - many authors and creators did not have decent understandings of engineering, much less logistics or construction or - even references to other ships in the star wars universe (this has led to much angst by many gamers of various game systems trying to make sense of all the various sources (a supermax bulk carrier at over 3 times the size is only about 60k to 70k tons of cargo).
Well nearly 3,000,000 Cr Upgrades cost makes sense, i mean, from class 3 to class 1 Hyperdrive, ca.45% speed increase in atmosphere, shield generator, Hangar bay (+ Fighters?), the "droid worker army"... then all the smaller upgrade.
Speaking of Dewbacks, have you ever thought about covering foods and drinks in the star wars universe? Ships are cool and all but mmm i wonder how those Dewbacks taste like.

TL:DR A better hyperdrive and enough guns to deter pirates and it would make a good general hauler for not too much more cost. While there's a lot of comments about modifying it into a *combat ship…* and it would make a great *Q ship* if upgraded with a lot of pop up turrets and hidden launchers. I think it would work best as a base design for a *protected freighter* for a medium sized company, maybe as a small fleet of ships (who can't afford massive haulers with escorts for major markets), it's always better to have combat ships built as such from the ground up (except for hotted up YT-1300's). Upgrade it with some weapons - whatever is legally allowed. Mostly laser cannons (a lot of pirates use snubfighters to disable their prey) and a couple of turbolasers. Although ions are the best just for stopping ships from getting close and can be fired when you're not absolutely sure it's a bad guy, but they're just behaving suspiciously. But the idea is deterrent, not being impounded as a illegal battleship, and still being able to haul a load. A rear mounted launcher or two just to suprise determined attackers is a good idea as well, but torpedoes are expensive and saved as a last resort The other upgrade is the hyperdrive, perhaps to a 1.5 to cut transit time and thus maximise profits. Going for something faster could risk reliability and also get very expensive, not worth it considering the reduced transit time pay off. Atmospheric speed isn't needed, it's not going to outrun a specialised raider no matter how modified (assuming financial restraint). The standard upgrades to sensors and communications so it has good situational awareness and that shouldn't be too expensive. Considering the investment of just the basic ship itself, these additional expenses make financial sense and greatly increase its usability. The biggest cost is the *better hyperdrive,* but that will pay for itself in a shorter trips. Sublight speed is not really a issue as flight time to and from orbit is a small part of the total journey. Weapons are the next biggest expense, and don't make any money, but are a one off insurance cost (excluding ammo), but say 4 quad laser cannon turrets (or 2 nine laser cannon turrets to save crew requirements…much quicker shoot downs), a pair of turrets with double turbolasers mixed in with a pair of ion cannons on the same mount, and two launchers mounted to the rear with say a dozen proton or ion torpedoes (to stop a bigger ship) shouldn't be a big jump on the base cost of the ship or increase crew requirements that much (only needed in combat, so can double up as general crew). Just spread the turrets around so they have good coverage, and maybe not go for such fancy mounts if off the shelf turrets can be bought and fitted out cheaply (a couple of extra crew positions for the extra turrets). Sensors (and communications) are independent of the ships size so just spend whatever is necessary on a bang for buck scale to allow it to see and hear trouble before it gets close (communications also helps with trade information). I assume the standard shields are good enough, if not they can be upgraded, but only if it would make a big difference. Anything else is a waste unless it's cargo related. No fighters carried as they … … … _fuck I ramble on_ I'll do a tl:dr at the top, which you've already read before you got here, so really you can go now. Although I would also get pop out spikes on the carry handle at the top in case a giant space alien tries to grab the freighter, you never know.
I can definitely see how his ship would be worth such a ridiculous price. Cloaking tech, the ability to extend life support, plus warship tech over black market?
