    Mystery Solved? It seems that a provisioner might actually count as a settler in their original settlement. Doesn't always happen because I have settlements with "0" people listed yet still have supply chains linked to it. But that might be because they originated from other settlements before being supply-chained to a "0" people settlement. It would be an interesting experiment to see if you attracted 20 settlers in a settlement and then sent them all off as provisioners. Would your settlement be totally empty and yet still show 20 people in Workshop mode?

    • @KevinAlibert
      @KevinAlibert 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      theorically it should still be marked with 20 settlers although I'd strongly no recommend that as your happiness will decrease fast (no food no guards) and you may lose the settlement and so your supply lines as well

    • @paulgettle4969
      @paulgettle4969 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Now 20 Automatron Provisioners on the other hand, care not for your irrational human need for happiness.

    • @zaggrukk8644
      @zaggrukk8644 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Yes, a provisioner does count as a settler and goes towards your population count. As such, you need to supply an extra bed for them to use as well. The problem with them phasing in and out of the population count, lies within the vanilla bug with all settlements. As everyone should know by now, Bethesda never fully fixed the pip-boy/map settlement statistics. It still gets confused if you are not in the settlement. This is partly due to the fact that the settlement doesn't physically exist in game until you zone it in. But, that's how they programmed it to avoid memory issues while playing. The game kind of suspends the settlements so that it doesn't have to keep all of the animations of the settlers and whatnot running in the background while you are nowhere near it.
      And as Kevin Alibert said, while a settler is assigned as a provisioner, they will never reached a 100% happiness level. You can still get the settlement to 100% with a provisioner. But, the provisioner will always drag the numbers down.
      And if you have all of your settlers assigned as provisioners, your population will fluctuate depending on when you look at the stats and how many are physically present in the location at that time. As I stated before, you still need to meet the requirements of that settlement. Meaning, that you have to have enough beds, as well as enough food, water and defense to support the population.
      @Paul Gettle. . .yes. You can do an all automatron as provisioner settlement. That's what I use the Mechanist Lair for. Since automatrons are permanently stuck at 50% happiness you can forego the normal settlment features (food, water, defense, etc.). Keep in mind that they never fixed automatrons as provisioners. Normal human/ghoul provisioners are protected and can not die. However, automatrons as provisioners never get that script. They can be killed. And on top of that, they never fixed the glitch that despawns all of the improvements that you've done to them. Meaning that if they despawn while you are away, they default back to the default protectron. Whatever options, weapons or armor that you outfitted them with will be lost. Sometimes they come back. Sometimes not.
      P.S. Extra credit side note. If you want one settlement to supply all of the commonwealth, then make your hub at V88. If you use the terminal settler beacon (I'm not sure if the normal radio tower beacon works this way), the population cap is 30, rather than the normal 20. All charisma bonuses and glitches work to surpass this as well. With no charisma bonus or glitching involved I capped my V88 at 31. I don't know how that happened. They all showed up while I was building and rebuilding the vault. I didn't glitch any of them in. I didn't even know I had the first 20 since I was building nonstop for the first 40 hours after opening it up : )

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Court Beckius, so glad you let me know about the automatron provisioner glitch. I had built the fastest, coolest-looking automatron provisioner for my Covenant build that I was gonna show off in the video. It was amazing and took me a while to assemble. Then when I get ready to record, it'd turned into some slow/lame automaton that didn't look anything like what I'd originally built. I blew it off because I needed to get to on to recording but what you said now explains the mystery. Can't believe they didn't patch that bug. 😤

    • @Not_Mondokat
      @Not_Mondokat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Provisioners do have a "home base" in the settlement they were set to be a provisioner in. They take up a bed and require food and water. However, the settlement with 20 settlers all set as provisioners uses up food and water from the linked settlements, so they don't starve. I usually do this with hangman's alley, since it's centrally located and has hardly any room for farms.

    In Fallout 5, they should take a note from Halo's Forge system and let the player become an Eye-Bot during Workshop Mode.
    It would eliminate the need for a jetpack or fiddling with stairs when doing tall pieces, quicker movement speed, smaller character profile so it wouldn't be such a chore to find that 'perfect angle' in a small area (such as interiors). But back to the video, this is a lifesaver, I really enjoy the junk fences so being able to make solid fence lines is a dream come true. Thank you very much!

      Sometimes it counts a settler that is still in route to the settlement too. I've seen that when rescuing settlers and sending them to a specific settlement. The settlement number goes up even though that settler may still be walking in my sightline on the other side of the map.

    • @paulgettle4969
      @paulgettle4969 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bob Vila was a hack and nothing but a pretty face for television. Paul's more of a Norm Abrams, knows his tools inside and out and gets shit done.

    • @johnstockman2026
      @johnstockman2026 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Vila was a total poseur that could not stand behind his work and the team; referencing the debacle of the semi-automated house systems they incorporated in one of their builds and the new owners had huge difficulties with the systems not working, breaking, becoming unusable. Vila blamed the owners for lack of knowledge and tampering, which did not happen. Norm Abrams is a total craftsman with amazing skills and does not do anything half-assed or it's-good-enough. I design and construct custom loudspeakers, which involves proper woodworking/cabinet-making skills. I've learned so much from Norm over the years, tips, techniques and especially the jigs I made for my woodworking tools, that have elevated my skills to far beyond recognized name-brand speakers. Just like Paul has done with my F4 building skills! Plus what I've also learned from all the great comments and ideas, thank you everyone!

    you can overlap anything you want using the TCL command, turn off clipping, click and tab the piece you want to overlap something on not moving it, and then you can place anything in the space it occupies. I use it for making buildings that have odd angles, putting more plants into a raised garden plot than will normally fit (corn great example, if you place the corn normally you'll get four corn plants in a garden plant, but if you go into TCL you can put a dozen corn plants in a plot. You can squeeze turrets together, merge things like the concrete window and screen pieces to make a screened window. TCL is my go to tool now for making the impossible placements possible

    I used this the other day. I was working on Far Harbor, and one of the settlements you get, I think it is the camp ground building, has a seamless junk fence surrounding it, except for 2 spots. Using this concept, I was able to place the door frame back into place, and get the fence piece that had fallen into line with the rest of the fence. I will be using this at other settlements as well. I had tried to build a junk fence around all of Sanctuary before I found this channel, but the best I could do before scrapping the whole thing was to put them in place, and fill any gaps with small fence posts. It looked terrible, and used so much of my settlement size, I had to scrap it all to build anything else.

    Great video, interesting method! I LOVE the idea of using the sloped roof pieces for hills! I also love the idea of sinking a bulky (and vulnerable to attack) generator into the ground! My Oberland Station settlement lost power when their generator was damaged in an attack, and I've been walling up generators pretty carefully since then. I never thought about underground power! :D
    Since I play on a PC with a mouse & keyboard rather than a controller, I prefer using console commands for positioning objects (ModPos Z -5 or -10 is usually enough to get rid of those annoying bottom gaps), I find it a little faster than your method, but honestly, not by that much. It's pretty impressive to get results like this as quickly as you have, without directly entering code.

    One thing you might find interesting is that there are actually some Rail Buses that were used in Germany that look almost exactly like that school bus (but with different livery), so it's not too unrealistic to imagine that is an actual rail bus. But anyways, excellent tutorial.

    Build wish request for Fallout 5: allow the character to toggle snapping interior furnishings to a grid based on floor tiles, no more trying minor rotations just to get beds and counters to run parallel to walls.

    Hey there, setting up my Junk Fence like you showed, and I've been using two of the larger black rugs to position fences and they work great. You can also stare at the ground and pick your rugs back up, it'll show rug as targeted if you have issues finding an edge to grab, but I've sunk the stair stack as far as possible and nearly always get the big rugs back, love all the tips!

    i love the foundations idea, it's actually a bit cheaper to use the warehouse foundations as they don't require steel....and concrete is sold cheaply by nearly all vendors. i've built a seamless foundation wall around Starlight using a similar method, using the wooden floor/staircase piece to offset the height of each foundation, and building the walls from the steel warehouse pieces.....makes for an impressive looking fortress!

    I wish there was a "scrap all" selection. Like, "scrap all junk" or even a function to scrap all of an individual item in a settlement. Like "scrap all paintings" for example.

    As always I love your vids. This is off topic to this vid, but I noticed another Jamaica Plains secret. You may have already discovered it, but the church (I think to the east) across the street from the house that you glitched in has a cooking station that is connected to the Jamaica Plains work shop. It's interesting for the obvious reason that it is not directly connected to the settlement proper. I'm sure it was planned to be but for whatever reason it got cut. More evidence that Jamaica Plains was planned on being made larger than it turned out.

    Hey, I thought I'd suggest using a delayed off switch set to .5 for ur mortar. U can walk up to it and activate it just like a regular switch but turns off automatically. The mortar fires at .5 intervals if continually powered. So it works perfectly. Just a thought. Good work.

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice one Benjamin. I'll add that to my upcoming Miscellaneous Tips Part 2 video and credit you for the suggestion. 👍 Too bad it doesn't flip the switch back on its own though. The pressure plate might be an even better way to do this. :)

    Paul:
    I noticed you can be quite jittery when trying to place object with group select. I usually turn my look sensitivity down when settlement building. It seems to help me out.
    I still don't know why walls built completely and carelessly out of junk should be aligned perfectly straight but, a tip I learned from SarDeliac, is to turn your hud colors all the way to the left. That removes the glow around the item you are trying to place and makes it much easier to see how they are lining up.

    • @SkooledZone
      @SkooledZone  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great tip. I was thinking about that the other day in fact because I like the sensitivity high for combat. I'll just need to remember to turn it down for building. LOL.

    • @Glyphmorph
      @Glyphmorph ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that a good suggestion for FO5 building would be to allow you to have separate settings menus for when you are in build mode or not that are automatically applied when you enter and exit build mode. Remembering to fiddle with your settings every time you pop into and out of build mode is another hassle that really shouldn't be necessary in modern gaming. A build mode settings menu shouldn't be too difficult for developers to implement.

    What you have with the pump, I have with the bench press from vault tec, the weights go up and down and nobody is laying under it. The missing settler, is probably the provisioner, and occupies also a bed in your settlement. He is probably recruited from the settlement you showing and so that settlement is his home plate. Great vids by the way.
