thats something you always see at a jazz concert - the singer returns to the mic, and everyone falls silent. They have respect for the craft and the performers on stage. A thing of beauty
Pat Metheny is awesome. This whole band is great. But his solo is SO nice here. He makes the whole band come alive. His sound is big and grand, such a good tone selection. Thanks and God bless you!!!
Wow i love Metheny,i love it how he starts his solo off in the simplest phrases then inspires himself to launch into this amazing solo. Well for someone who has spent the majority of their life on tour, you'd expect such greatness.
Great rendition of a classic song by everybody involved. Pat Metheny is just the best for my money. What a solo. He floors me every time I see him play.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? All great solos. Pat M is just the best ever and my all- time favorite. Mr Brecker was and all time great as well. And how cool is Nils voice and trombone playing. But let me say that I had never heard of Mr Bjorson until I saw this clip. Blown away is an understatement. Talk about soulful playing; George Benson would be proud. You know when music so powerful it brings a year to your eye? This piece did it. Add to that his untimely death years later and it just adds to the moment. Thanks for sharing this
Y know and enjoy Pat many years ago, but I did nt know that wonderful group . Only Brecker. The music is not lost in a mascarade. IT S alive. Thank you
tks for the posting. This, for me, is the best guitar solo, piano solo, trombone solo in history. Iconic, fantabulous, gorgeopolis, tremendopolous. Enough superlatives? Metheny is a Greek God and a Montosaurous
I m blessed to hear such expression of human creativity. Thank you again for posting this. Metheny seems to be revelling in this. A sure sign that it is good
bytedildo: The singer/trombonist is called Nils Landgren. The pianoplayer is Esbjorn svensson. Their both swedish. Esbjorn has an amazing trio; EST. One of the best jazzgroups in the world. Nils has a funk/jazz-group called FunkUnit.
aww man, how come no one has anything to say about Nils Landgren... the man is a phenomenal trombone player, his groove is incredible, how many bone players do you see sharing the stage with the likes of Brecker and Metheny!? He may not be the best jazz player out there but man does he groove and I love it!
Wow. Simply amazing. Solos were wondrous all around. At first I thought Pat's choice of synth was a little out of place, but when he built that solo up like that, I understood why.
I don't know too many trombonists who could blow out a solo like that then immediately launch into a calm, cool, and collected vocal role. He's not even breathing hard between his lines.
ok...im a vocalist, who used to play piano, who is learning drums, aho LOVES the sax, and LOVES all kinds of guitar too...But the keys are the best here. Breathtaking.
probably metheny best and energetic solo!! Absoloutely awesome!!!!!! Love Metheny way to play guitar, hes my biggest inspiration ever!!! Wonderful musician.
Couldnt even imagine the pressure Nils had must felt. I mean, taking over after such an incredible solo Pat just pulled off isnt an easy task. But he managed amazing. Incredible musicians!
@sam0xin From his entry in Wikipedia: 'On June 14, 2008, Svensson went missing during a scuba diving session on Ingarö outside Stockholm, Sweden. His diving companions eventually found him lying unconscious on the seabed. Having sustained serious injuries, he was rushed to Karolinska University Hospital by helicopter, but his life could not be saved. He was 44 years old, married and the father of two sons.' Such a tragedy and terrible loss to the world of music.

@scottishphotographer Thank you for respond , WHAT A HORROR !! Such a talented musician , father of two sons !! it seems was it hit & run accident...? Yeah it is a BIG LOSS . RIP Esbjörn Svensson.
I agree completely. In fact, I believe the only "law" that should exist for a soloist is this: "If it didn't sound good, you should have played something else!" Go Esbjörn !
@longination Pat uses 2 amps with a delay and that made it sound naturally chorused, The dry goes to one amp and then the delayed tone to another. His solid body guitar is a midi driver to the Roland GR-300. It is ancient but Pat's says it is the only musical synth. He is using either Digitech or Lexicon delays. Esblörn Svenson is playing on a level, that the point in asking if f# over d- is a mistake is no point at all. listen to his playing and his records - one of the few inventions in jazz in the last 10 years! bw, Dan
This Masquerade is not a George Benson Song. Is was composed by Leon Russell in 1972 and the Carpenters and Areta Franklin had a version before George Benson.
Real jazz! Pat Metheny sounds superb. Every musician in this group is extraordinary.
It's delightful to experience this wonderful music.
Svensson should definitely be regarded as one of the greatest jazz pianists of our time. Leucocyte is an epic album. RIP Esbjorn
Its great to be alive and fee this passion for music. It transcends all nations, languages, beliefs. This is utopia
your music has touched all of us. there is not much people as big as you left in jazz now.

Nils has that creamy velvety voice that complements all of the accompanied geniuses on this set.
a true gift this video.
thanx

This is a jazz masterpiece! Beautifully realized and played on the spot in an instant!!
the definition of jazz, exquisitely played my MASTERS!!!! mesmerizing!!!
What a line up...bunch of outstanding solos!Great!
RIP EST!
RIP Michael!
OMG, I'm in awe. Each solo is different and awesome. The drummer is super, too.
Great rendition of a classic song by everybody involved. Pat Metheny is just the best for my money. What a solo. He floors me every time I see him play.
Wow, just wow. This might be the coolest piece of jazz I've ever seen.
What can I say that hasn't already been said?

Pat's Solo is just so amazing!
Dissonance in jazz gives the performer and the performance more freedom and creates a different dimension in the style of an old standard.
This is a fantastic vid! Everyone's solo is just out of this world! Thank you for posting! Really enjoyed this!
amazing, just fantastic!!
all amazing solos! specially metheny!!
Never a misplaced note, in Pat's solo. Unbelievable!!
what a legendary record. the best jazz musicians of our time(1exception, RIP) on each instrument
Wonderful music...thanks!
This the 2nd greatest live jazz/ blues piece on youtube. See Sting/ Been Down So Long Paris Live. Phenomenal. Enjoy
just luv it guys, they're all so subtle
Metheny is a humble, genius who has the musical repertoire of Bjorn Borg on the tennis court and the same cool temperament. Thank you for posting this
What an incredible lineup!
Thank you Esbjörn, your music touched my spirit

This makes me want to play the tune.Great job !
You know, I (almost) feel sad when this piece ends. What a great session!

10 points for Nils Lundgren performance, both singing and especially burning trombone solo.
aww man, how come no one has anything to say about Nils Landgren... the man is a phenomenal trombone player, his groove is incredible, how many bone players do you see sharing the stage with the likes of Brecker and Metheny!? wow! Nils is amazing on this!
They all were marvels, but Esbjorn's solo was astonishing.
Wow these guys are great thx for uploading this video
Yummy sounds to stumble upon...Thanx
anyone else notice the similar timbres in Nils's trombone sound and his voice? truly an extension of himself, very impressive!

the trombone solo by Nils is killer!
Yea, I agree. Nils nails it!! He has a great voice and his trombone playing is incredible!!
very nice - very classic - well done

Pat's use of dynamics and build in his solo brought the band and crowd into the music more so than the other soloists,in my opinion.
I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan but the live version of George Benson playing this is simply untouchable.
I think that the culmination of his solo had need for this sound. Great solo!
Hi Emeraldjazzlady!
As the text said: piano is played by Esbjörn Svensson.
Have fun!
Nils is a beast, what a great performer. Wonder what brand of trombone he plays. (lol)
Fantastic. Any more from this set, he asked greedily.
Jazz, first of all...I love, next comes the independent performers who play it, and what they do for it.

This was pretty damn good!!!!!!!!!!!
Hahahaha I was working in another window waiting for Metheny's solo. Half way through it I changed windows and saw him playing the horn solo aahhaha!!
@scottishphotographer Thank you for respond , WHAT A HORROR !! Such a talented musician , father of two sons !! it seems was it hit & run accident...? Yeah it is a BIG LOSS . RIP Esbjörn Svensson.
aah, crazy... so amazing, elite-group
Yes, it sounds wonderful. Hope you didn't get lou2cv and me wrong, this 'false note' just make me smile and liking Esbjörn's solo even more.
Esbjorn's solo could not have been more perfectly constructed. The epitome of less is more.
lovely!!!
when they dig in at 5:46, that's such an awesome turning point
a tune that brights of own light ( but many diamonds inside )
wow metheny's tone is gorgeus!
Great Bone solo by Nils!
I never really cared about trombone but holy crap. I've found so many players that I would have never known because of listening to Metheny.
Esbjörn Svensson - great solo!!!
I miss Michael Brecker RIP
very interesting info ,thanks
Out of this world Tks for posting. What a guitar solo by Metheny. Do anyone know if there was a live CD/ DVD made of Jazz Baltiva 2003? Tks friends
Wonderful
Geeesh. Svensson AND Brecker.
not to be concerned re 'split' video. Great Sounds and Optics .. even in jig saw puzzle format.. Metheny shines with EST.
Very Good!
Espetacular!!
RIP Michael and Esbjorn

Metheny is mystic !
b e a utifl interpretation!
Me encanta. I loved it :)
Everybody got their small things that they are doing while preforming =)
I will never get tired of watching this video. Thank you.
Do you know where I can buy it. I am interested on having the music for my iPod.
@johnnymeanstreak It is a Yamaha signature.
Esblörn Svenson is playing on a level, that the point in asking if f# over d- is a mistake is no point at all. listen to his playing and his records - one of the few inventions in jazz in the last 10 years!
bw,
Dan
yes i agree, the tone of his voice is good, also the way he uses his voice and creates dynamic. but still... :D
aw well, could enjoy it anyways :)
My apologies. I meant Mr. Svenssen*.I have a bunch of his music since I first saw this clip a few years back. I only know him as E.S.T. though. :-)
damn..damn..this is what im talking about:)
@snowgoose92 umm... yeah! of corse he does - this is such a simple chord progression that even i know every consonant note to play at any moment
@ratboy82
It's similar to the way he's been approaching "Question and Answer" live as opposed to the studio version of the tune.
They were laughing because it was such a hip "clash" to play. They were diggin it......
hahaha,look this way...it's not F#,it's Gb...b11...:)...and it sounds great,those people don't make mistakes...ever...Bravo,Esbjorn!
This Masquerade is not a George Benson Song. Is was composed by Leon Russell in 1972 and the Carpenters and Areta Franklin had a version before George Benson.
