I had the consummate pleasure to play with Steve Rodby in college in the Jazz Band. He was CLEARLY an inCREDible artist, even THEN! ...and, since then, he has grown even more sophisticated ...if that's even POSSible!? It's truly great to hear him playing; and, thank you for having posted this video! Again, he's nothing short of a BRILLIANT artist!
Im an heavy metal guy, but I love classic music and jazz also, I take a lot of ideas form these 2 genres. I watched this video by accident and all I can say is OMFG!!!!!! This guy is beyond brilliant these phrasing on the guitar is atonishing
Pat is most likely the greatest player alive today. When he plays it's something very special that happens and the result is very nice to listen to and watch .
Man, The the sound of a custom Gibson ES-175 is so beautiful, Pat has his set up really nice and comming out of a poly-tone WOW!! Great sound and musicians!!
I saw Pay play this tune at The Fox theatre in Atlanta, GA 1 week after Antonio Carlos Jobim passed. He came out after the first set with an acoustic guitar, sat on a stool, turned off the microphone, and off he went. To this day it is still the most moving musical experience of my life.
I've been a fan of these guys since the early 90s and no matter how many times I see and hear them play, they always find ways to make my jaw drop. What an unbelievable collection of talent.
Great job Pat!! Steve, you are holding Up the Bottom like no one else can!! You are my Hero! Awesome Solo!!!! We Low Enders must stick together! Excellent tune.
Another amazing version of this tune can be found on Pat Martino's 1972 album originally called The Visit, but re-released as Footprints. Very dark and beautiful.
I did a quick search for this track, I typed out " how insensitive Pat Ma" and stumbled upon Pat Martino... had to check him out as it was my first time....I was blown away!
I was there the night he did this in New Brunswick, NJ and let me just say that I came close to swearing off guitar after that show. I'm glad I didn't, but I sure was close! Amazing!!
Jobim was a genius. I remember seeing PM at Red Rocks Amphitheater some years back and he played this in tribute in Jobim who had just passed away. Beautiful.
I am a Big Pat Methany fan and Steve Rodby is one of my Bass Heros! Awesome to hear Steve and Pat play together like this! Love the Solos! Awesome stuff here! Very enjoyable, indeed!!!
Extraordinario documento, gracias por el regalo, Pat es un genio, como músico, excepcional y asequible en lo personal. Steve Rodby, magnifica compañia. Y excelente elección de tema. Un 10.
Great member name! Your story reminds me of me! I was very much into players like Michael Hedges, Di Meola, and Steve Tibbetts, and then I read about Michael playing for Pat while he was in the hospital after his aneurism, since Michael had studied with him a bit. So finally I checked him out--I got Baiyina and Footprints. I hooked!!! I was not a bebop person until I heard Pat-he changed my musical life!
Pat Metheny is great. Been listening to him for years...and every time I see him playing a solo I just want to run onstage and hand him some Exlax. That facial expression !
Wow! How have i not seen this? Pat's second solo is incendiary! Any guitar players here? I'm going to go try to learn that solo. And big ups to the bass player. He started off slow and then blew my mind when he peaked with those swelling slides.
this is one of pat's best solos ever. in my opinion, that is. he's so sensual and melodic. it has this dark feel and sound to it. kinda reminds me of mozart.
Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim was a brazilian musician and one of the inventors of Bossa Nova, and in my opinion one of the greatest of all time. Died a couple of years ago. Pat sure does know how to handle that guitar. A shame he doesn't usa that Gibson anymore.
I can't remember who it was, but there was one famous actor who was originally studying jazz guitar, and this relatively unknown dude named Pat Metheny showed up at the school (could've even been Berkley) and played a gig. Hearing Pat made this guy realize he could never cut it as a professional and so he hung up his axe and became an actor. I just wish I could remember who it was.
No matter how complex is the harmony. The idea in music, i think is to communicate something. And Pat can do it in the easy and the complex harmonies. ^_^
amazing...too bad the uploader missed the intro...the harmony was dripping with texture...gotta get the DVD again i lost over the years....the hunt begins!
Dam, this is a great jazz video, only thing missing is my favorite part, the intro (to insensitive) It's the only part I could learn to play by brute force repetition, I think I wore out the tape (VHS) trying to learn it. I can still play it today.
He and Toninho Horta are my favorite ballad players. There are other guitarists with more chops or wider intervals, but in terms of expressiveness, Pat and Toninho are in their own category.
Since he was callous a long time ago, it was so sensitive in so many ways. Uh, for me I like to think it was the same for you, oh my "darling". We are really trying to do in the 80's + 90's and the last decade (2010/2015) otherwise it was a waste of time for me and for your needs with all the needs as I taught was a waste of time. Sylvie my one and only love of the spirit before and during COVID 19. Only love can be the solution in the years to come for those who still hope that one day a new horizon will rise above the hill and that new values will come etc. PS: Like the song said (Beatle) ; All you need is Love
Best live performance ever, IMHO. I've listened to this video end-to-end probably about 190 times, realistically, and I cannot get sick of it.
His second solo is simply the perfection
Me too
I am at 179

Never heard a Rodby solo before. Shit was tight! Well-paced and "narrative"-focused.
belle démonstration de comment rendre infâme un superbe morceau !!!

Peut-être sa plus accomplie interprétation " magic guitars " quand Pat prend les choses en main c'est du bout des doigts qui nous le sert (...) WOW!
Divine
