Which Abilities are Terrible for Competitive, but GREAT for Casual Play?

  • All Pokémon have abilities, and sometimes they become a lethal combination and soar to the top of the competitive scene! (Or so I hear...) However sometimes a Pokémon can be written off as having a "bad" ability, but they're just not designed for battling on the front lines and their purpose lies somewhere else! So let's see which abilities are the best for Casual play!
(And here are even more from before! • The Best Abilities in ... )

I have a soft spot for Damp. I was doing a Nuzlocke of Shield one time and I went around and fought some raid dens to gather items and TR’a. I was using the online feature so I didn’t have to deal with idiot AI. Out of nowhere turn one one of my allies, a level 100 Regileki, used explosion during a raid (the Pokemon I was using at the time was pretty low level). I braced myself for a loss… and the Wooper we were fighting had Damp and prevented the explosion!!!

As a casual player, one I have found very useful is Trace. It was a very good ability for helping me understand what abilities did and which Pokémon had them through play, regardless of what benefits they provided in battle itself.
Also, I'm glad you sort of bring up the point that most Pokémon are not built for competitive and sometimes a good ability is simply one that justifies you keeping around a Pokémon you might otherwise have boxed half way through the game.

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

That's true; Trace would be an excellent ability to teach new players, so if they put it on an early game bug or something it would be great!

Trace has some uses in competitive too. Gen 3 OU blissey is the premier special wall so dugtrio with arena trap traps and knocks out blissey. Porygon 2 with trace will copy arena trap then knock out dugtrio with ice beam. It sounds super specific but it actually comes up quite a bit given how optimized the meta game is

Looking at the ability Pickpocket actually makes me want to try it in a competitive scene. I think the strongest contender for this would be Grimmsnarl. When people see a Grimmsnarl, they're most likely expecting a Prankster/Screens set, so they'll do their best to counter it (maybe Brick Break/Psychic Fangs or another Dark type to shut down the ability). But Pickpocket can throw the opponent off kilter, allowing you to pull some shenanigans to take advantage of their confusion. Going itemless isn't your only option either. You have your choice of Berries to consume (most likely Sitrus for recovery or super effective damage reduction), Mirror Herb in more niche situations to copy a Swords Dance or Calm Mind (depending on your build), Terrain seeds if you're running a terrain focused team (Galarian Weezing combo goes hard here), and so forth. It seems like a niche strategy for the current meta, and it probably is, but I could see Pickpocket Grimmsnarl working in it.

I think the biggest downside is not being able to run an item on your mon, and if the opponent doesn’t make contact, like against a special attacker or they’re using non-contact physical moves, you’re getting no use out of the ability, when you could be running prankster trick to give them a debilitating item while still taking their item that would’ve helped them

I hate to bust your bubble, but some of those Abilities are not as good as you have made them out to be.
    1. While technically Mycelium Might can facilitate putting a Pokémon with Insomnia or Vital Spirit to sleep, poisoning a Pokémon with Immunity, etc., it will not stay asleep, poisoned, what-have-you because Abilities that are specifically immune to status conditions will cure Pokémon of them if they appear regardless. (That is probably why Corrosion cannot bypass Immunity, only the Poison- or Steel-type immunity to poison.)
    2. Technically a Pokémon with Tinted Lens can have its moves resisted because it only raises quarter damage to half. I do not know why you would use a quarter-damage move, but I inveigh against all not very effective moves anyway. There are always better alternatives to Tinted Lens.
    3. I will assume that your Skitty knew Foresight because its Normalized Blizzard could not hit Glacia's two Froslass otherwise. That is admittedly much better than the usual cited pros of Normalize, like the paralyzing Ground-type Pokémon with Thunder Wave. Do you know what else can paralyze a Ground type? Stun Spore and Glare. (Really any non-Electric-type move capable of paralysis can paralyze a Ground type, but those are the only other such status moves.) Yes, Stun Spore has failed against Grass, Overcoat, and Safety Goggles since Generation VI, but Ground has only been paired with Grass thrice and Overcoat and Safety Goggles are niche, not to mention that Wormadam (Sandy Cloak) is the only Ground-type Pokémon that can have Overcoat. Glare, meanwhile, has no inhibitors, apart from Ghost in Generations II and III, before Normalize existed. Furthermore, Normalize's power boost only applies in Generation VII and onward, so in Generations IV-VI, your Skitty or Delcatty is screwed. Cute Charm and even Wonder Skin are better for those two.
On the other hand, you will be glad to hear that Pickup has picked up opponents' used items since Generation V. You may also like to know that Aftermath's Japanese name translates to "Induced Explosion," which is why Damp negates it.

But it's not bad on the latter 2 & H-Goodra, who can abuse setup & recovery moves (Rest, Acid Armor, Curse) to their fullest & become almost unkillable, ending with a sweep afterward. Especially with Mega Slow Calming its Mind/bulking its Iron Defense, Slacking off when low on HP & then finally crushing the opponent through the use of Stored Power, Body Press or STAB moves. It's pretty lethal if out of hand & Shell Armor helps with that cuz you can't randomly crit through the Defense boosts & get your strat ruined due to unlucky RNG kicking in.

Normalize is good conceptually, but the issue is, as you stated, Typing.
Outside of Inverse battles, Normal isn't good against anything and has several types that either resist or are immune to it.
But the biggest problem with Normalize is the fact that it strips a Normal type of one of its arguably greatest assets: Versatility.
Many Normal types have a ton of coverage with only one weakness, being Fighting. But by pigeonholing your Normal type into strictly using Normal moves, suddenly you have no checks for Rock, Steel and Ghost, while also having no moves to exploit other weaknesses.
The other moves that shift typing *only* affect Normal moves. So in other words, they can still maintain a level of coverage. Normal types with Normalize can't. And Super Effective damage is always superior to STAB damage, as the former deals double damage, while the latter only deals one and a half times, plus 20% from the Ability.
Coverage is just superior in pretty much all circumstances.
