Oricorio is my favorite Pokémon. The way it incorporates Charles Darwin’s study into finches and the way they also adapt to the nectar of different islands, and also adapts it into various styles of world dance is just bounding with creativity. Barely anybody spares any thought for these genius birds because they’re so terrible in battle, but I absolutely appreciate the thought put into their design.
Oricorio is great! I loved the idea of the finches translating to other types, I guess it's just harder to appreciate now that the islands no longer separate them...
Seeing you group Ambipom with the likes of Machamp and Graveller really made me think of other unofficial Pokémon groupings like that. Like Lucario and Volcarona and Cofagrigus all sharing Egyptian themes. And the Rotom forms and Chandelure and Avalugg and Klefki being household items and/or furniture. I'm sure there are more!
Lurantis is, to me, an absolutely perfect Pokémon in terms of concept and execution. Real-world orchid mantises disguise themselves as flowers to attract smaller insects as prey. Lurantis completely flips that on its head, being a flower that disguises itself as a large insect to ward away small insects that would try to eat it. I've seen people confused at it being a pure Grass-type Pokémon, but looking at its lore and inspiration explains it well.
Those details are why I love the modern pokemon. Even a Pokemon like Squawkabilly has a lot of effort put into, with each form having different behaviors that all are like Punks/Rockabillys act like, even having gang wars. Other examples I really love are: Dragapults tail is disappearing because they never found the tail bones of the fossil it's based on. Bombirdier is a bombarding stork, as there is a famous kind of bombing plane called a Fiat BR.20 Cicogna (Cicogna means STORK in italian) used in the SPANISH Civil War. And don't even get me started on the 7 or so layers of the Orbeetle line
Oh, I didn't even know that about Bombirdier! I just thought about it being a mean stork that delivers rocks... from high altitudes... instead of babies as per the myth/tale. A bombardier that's a bird.
One of my favourite things I realized about orbeetle is that apparently introduced Japanese ladybirds are giving the local English ladybirds a hard time in the U. K. This makes ledian's having the bug-dominating flying type while orbeetle has the bug-weak psychic type even more fitting, as ledian has plenty ways to be a huge pain to orbeetle.
The Nacli line's names and design are simple but clever. The cubic structures are actually based on the real world crystal structure of salt, which forms cubic crystals. It's one of my favorite Gen 9 lines.
One Pokémon I'd love to shoutout at this opportunity is Maractus! I don't see too many people giving it a shot just because Cacnea and Cacturne came first, but I Maractus does something way different with the concept! Its name is a mix of maraca and cactus, and the PokéDex talks about how it sounds like maracas when it dances, immediately communicating that this funky fella is just here to have a good time! And it's just so stinkin cute too! Even with Ogerpon stealing my heart away wholesale, Maractus remains my favorite Grass-type Pokémon. It's just happy to be here and I'm happy it's here too! ^^

I do love Treevenant, but as the Grass/Ghost type in Kalos, it kinda makes it overshadow a different cool Pokemon - Gorgeist, which is honestly a pretty unique Pokemon with its size changing capabilities
That is another big reason why Trevenant is under appreciated; if it were saved for Galar or Gourgeist had come in Unova or something they both would have room to breathe!

I remember Ambipom as getting shafted in the anime. When it was an Aipom, it loved Contests so much that Ash traded it to Dawn for her battle-loving Buizel. It performed well for Dawn and evolved into Ambipom under her care, but then all of a sudden it tries out Ping Pong and decides it likes it even better than Contests and traveling with Dawn, so it has Dawn leave it behind to focus on its new "career."
Not only that, but table salt is iodized, so it also has the symbol for the element Iodine in its name, not just a random ending to make it more pronouncable.
Farigiraf: The name is still a palindrome, but it reverses the word just like the design is (the "possessing" head is no longer on the back but front). The giraffe body is also a "rig" for this psychic force to control, hence the hard g in the middle of the word unlike the starting soft g of giraffe. It's not what I thought we'd get from the evolution, but it's so well done that I like it even better for it.
Yeah, I get it... but Girafarig being a palindrome was brilliant because the Pokemon itself was the same forwards and backwards too, Farigiraf is not. They face the same way now, so it doesn't need that naming gimmick, that's probably just me though...
Yeah it’s easy to forget thing like that when it comes to the plethora of colorful creatures such as Pokémon, but thankfully I do notice the small details and I can appreciate a Pokémon more because of that. For example, Tinkaton still has its baby rattle fused into the core of the hammer, things like that make me appreciate a Pokémon more X3

I love how dyslexic most people were when Armarouge was revealed. They kept pronouncing it as Arma-rogue even though it's clearly not based on a rogue and it's the French word for red.
Surprised you didn't mention it, bc it's probably the main reason for the mob connection between the evos Another name for a flock of crows is a mob, and when they attack en masse, that attack is referred to as 'mobbing'. They especially mob owls, which is a bit of a species-wide hit being put out (I cannot recall if any of the owl pokedex entries mention a rivalry with the murkrow line; be pretty cool if they did)
I think Relicanth is needed for finding the Regis because its body is actually a sea chart! The light tan splotches are islands, and the red spot is the treasure in the ocean. Relicanth to guide you, and Wailord to dive deep enough to get you there. Which only makes it cooler imo
I have always maintained that people would warm up to Ambipom better if it had a less goofy haircut. Of course, 'goofy' is subjective. Thanks for talking about it! The Aipom line's kind of a favorite of mine.
Honchcrow's name and behavior have other references, but in terms of appearance it goes from a witch to a wizard, with the "hat" being specifically based either on Gandalf's or on Odin's (which Gandalf's was based on).
0:22: Bite your tongue! Spritzee is one of my favourite gen 6 pokémon, do not insult my powderpuff borb baby :< Seriously, though, spritzee has so much to appreciate about its design. Its connection to perfume making the beak both resemble a fancy masquerade mask one might put on after spritzing yourself with an aroma at the boudoir and a plague doctor's mask which would likely be filled with flowery fragrances is just too brilliant. And as for early-gen 'mons that deserve more recognition, I think koffing's a good candidate. It only just recently hit on me why koffing is Koga's signature pokémon. I always thought a fighting type would more suit a ninja, but then I realized that being round, explosive and emitting smoke, koffing is basically one of those smokescreen bombs that ninjas always use in the media! It makes so much sense, but it never occurred to me until just a little while ago! I'd say seel is also a candidate. Its having probably the least creative name out of any pokémon leads many to think it's poorly designed, but really it's a clever blend of seal pup, walrus, narwhal and puppy which comes together to make a charming, fantastical critter. Though there definitely are some names which are impressive - you've only cracked the surface with minior's name, if you'll pardon the pun. It also kind of sounds like "mignon", French for "cute", while the last four letters of its name are the same as in "junior", so its name has even more references to its being a cute li'l guy. "Palossand" also has the bonus of the middle being kind of similar to "colossal", suiting its being the bigger sand ghost. Also, isn't "ponyta" meant to kind of sound like "bonita" because it's a pretty li'l pony? And as for relicanth, I recall someone pointing out that its red spot along with its camo pattern kind of makes the surface of its body resemble a treasure map, making its role in finding the regis even more suitable! Not to mention that it and wailord are very cleverly paired representing a transition from water to land (coelacanths are more closely related to land animals than most other fish) and a transition to water (whales are mammals that adapted to a marine life).
My Problems with Ambipom aren't the ideas, it's the execution. The fingers no longer look like Aipoms fingers, they look like Glove Balloon fingers, too flimsy to hold anything, the triangle nose comes out of nowhere and then theres the bowl cut fringe which just cuts into it's face shape.
I’ve taken a small break from Pokémon recently due to burnout. Playing 8 of those games in a small period really wears you out. I’ve even unsubbed from so many channels. But your content remains fresh and looks at this franchise interestingly.
One bonus I really like about mareep is that in Nigeria there's a legend describing lightning as a ram which charges, while thunder is its mother telling it off for charging. Kind of neat to see a possible Sub-Saharan African cultural reference this early.
I think seadra is a bit underappriciated. its name is like a short version of sea dragon and the pokedex even calls it the dragon pokemon. I like how they gave lance one in the lets go games, to show that even pokemon without the dragon type can have dragon elements. also, I love the part in its design that relataes to poison
I’m vary partial to Maractus, myself. It has that name thing going on, it can have water absorb as an ability calling to how cacti live in the arid climes they tend to. Maractus can also learn Pin Missile because... well... pins. On top of all that, I just think he’s neat. This could also be bias on my part, since my first ever Pokémon card was Maractus that I got in a Happy Meal.
In Pokemon Go I have a shiny Murkrow that I’m pretty proud of the name of. Since both the anime and the Dex show that Murkrow are obsessed with anything sparkly, I named it “Narcissus” after the guy from Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection
Could you do a video on possible gimmicks in pokemon for newer generations. We ARE getting them so the most we can do is hope for good ones. By gimmicks i mean not only "reigonal gimmicks".
I have been making fakemon lately and I'm not too familiar with the ScarVi pokemon. I started making a salt miner pokemon called Nackle, before learning about the Nacli line 😅
Haha, don't worry about it, happens all the time! I created a fake Pokemon that was a sarcophagus Ghost/Ground type, and then they made Cofagrigus, and THEN they gave it a regional form with the Ground type, so they steal ideas a lot...
Any Catholic Church has a tabernacle. It’s usually a locked cupboard, sometimes in a separate room from the worship space. It contains the Eucharist outside of Communion. It would only be in a tent if some regent was traveling or engaged in a military campaign.
No I'm talking about THE Tabernacle; the one from the Old Testament the Hebrews used while wondering in the wilderness. That's where the Catholics got the name in the first place...
Aipom was always my favorite Pokemon as a kid (and still is). I was pretty disappointed with Ambipom's design when it came out, it has really grown on me, especially though using it in actual competitive games where Aipom isn't viable. The niche of having STAB technician Fake Out + a really respectable speed makes it really goofy and annoying which makes me love it even more, and its more clown-like appearance fits perfectly. Would I *prefer* if the tail fingers didn't look like udders? Sure. Is the bowl cut really necessary? Maybe not. But being a somewhat strange design makes it even more unique and endearing. Adding a third stage to help it keep up with power creep would be a great opportunity to improve the design to its max potential. Imagine a new evo or a mega evolution that had even more tails based on a Swiss Army Knife. Or just a third one that could change forms between different tools and weapons. Auxiliapom? Adaptipom? Utilipom? Would be fitting since monkeys are some of the only real life animals that use tools like humans. Let it keep Technician, but also have Adaptability as an option. Or hell, with all of the unique abilities mons are getting these days (like Farigiraf's Armor Tail or Blood Moon Ursaluna's Mind's Eye), they could give it a better version of Technician that also has Adaptability on top of that, or Technician + Scrappy, or Technician + not being able to miss multi hit moves (like Double Hit, Tail Slap, and Triple Axel). I think these would be less broken than they seem since it's still on a mono Normal type. But just for fun, give it Stone Axe and Ceaseless Edge because they're already releasing ridiculously broken stuff as is and those moves would fit with the idea of having a literal built-in Swiss Army Knife lol
I think most people go with Snowshrew to keep the "S" sounds, but if they had come out post Wiglett you best believe they'd be a different species instead of a form!
First, where's Absol? Second, I was laughing so hard as you said you loved Dreadnaw, bc I personally hate it, no offence intended. Third, Murkrow is (edit: was) recognised as one of the best VGC Pokémon bc of Prankster Tailwind

As a rock type lover I always love relincanth. One of the few coolest fishes around and is a living fossil pk I just had to say that flamingo it's going to be one of the worst pokémon design
Flamigo isn’t terrible once you realize that its body is shaped like a boxing glove, with its wing being the thumb part. And the knot in its neck also references balloon animals and/or flamingo lawn ornaments. It’s not the best, but it does have some creative elements.
@@aspiringwayfarer I still stand for crappy design. So if it was gloves ,that's it use it body to fight with? It got two wings so I got two thumbs? It's similar to toucannon, it's just a toucan. It doesn't resemble a cannon. What does it shoot? Laser? Is it laserbeak?
I used to think the lack of Dark Type Pokémon available in Johto was a problem. I have never used Ambipom in Pokémon Soul Silver. The Shadow Claw TM in Route 42 is an option for Morty that I always overlook. Ghost is strong against Ghost and Psychic, the same types Dark is strong against. Shadow Claw or Shadow Ball are great for Will but his entire team is weak to Electric and Fire Type moves. HGSS gives the player Extrasensory Togetic, so the game gives the player a great counter to the Ecruteak Gym regardless of what starter Pokémon the player chose. I play the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn games more than the rest of the main series games. I always remember all 386 Pokémon from the first three generations. There are many Pokémon introduced after Gen 3 that I like but I prefer old Pokémon designs and mechanics.
@@emperorcubone Perhaps. By the way, I'm still waiting for a video about predicting gen 4 Pokemon evolving further in the future and I also have a second request which is a video about predicting what old Pokemon could get new Pokemon based on themselves like Diglett and Tentacool did.
I do love minior and relicant but the rest are beyond underbaked and or trash. The monkey evo is NOT effective especially. You had 2 gens to bake something and you just add another hand? The name isn't a saver and is regional. Also the issue with these mons is they no longer have that left field design. Fusing identifiable things into something brand new. The dread turtle looks as creative as a found parts sculpture of a snapping turtle. It is just WAY to accurate to a single source. Otherwise known as BORING. I feel like pokemon super fans that love all the designs also have a lack of looking at finer details. They are like buffet enthusiast that may not have the most detailed pallet. This also is where we have issues because they think all anime style creatures look like pokemon. So when pokemon has stolen design chooses they get the glory as the og gets attacked. Palworld is a great example. 99% of these mons are different enough yet modern pokemon are more different than they are. People also sadly dont notice the boring shift pokemon has been on since gen 8. They did this in gen 3 slightly and massively in gen 4. People do not define what they are seeing or think deeper about it. sad
never in my life have I ever thought of seeing a picture of Ambipom with the word "outstanding" next to it

Honchcrow's name and behavior have other references, but in terms of appearance it goes from a witch to a wizard, with the "hat" being specifically based either on Gandalf's or on Odin's (which Gandalf's was based on).
0:22: Bite your tongue! Spritzee is one of my favourite gen 6 pokémon, do not insult my powderpuff borb baby :<
Seriously, though, spritzee has so much to appreciate about its design.
The most creative Pokémon I see is rotom when it not in other forms
Original Rotom IS super creative, and unfairly overshadowed by its other forms!

NaCli evolves into Wyrdeer confirmed by Emperor Cubone!
Haha, I suppose it's true!
Nacli wasn’t the first Mario looking Pokémon as Minior kinda reminds me of the star bits from Mario Galaxy
In only 30 more years we'll have enough for a full game!
@@emperorcubone there is actually a video by Dorkly called “If Mario Was in Pokémon”
I ain't gonna lie, I've rarely thought of murkrow but he's so cute. I want one on my team now.
If I can shine a light on just one Pokemon for someone, then it's all worth it!
For Palossand, the ability should have made them immune or reduced damage in addition to the defense boost.
I will admit that's true, because taking super effective damage is still rough...
@@emperorcubone that it is.
Haha, yeah these are the design choices I was saying might not be some people's cup of tea so I understand...
Really clever video topic!
crackin work boss
I thought Nacli was a chocolate snack, along with it's evolutions 😂😂😂
I’ve taken a small break from Pokémon recently due to burnout. Playing 8 of those games in a small period really wears you out. I’ve even unsubbed from so many channels. But your content remains fresh and looks at this franchise interestingly.
Taking some time away can be necessary sometimes, but I'm glad to remain a representative voice for the franchise!
Sudowoodo deserves an evolution or regional variant
The Mareep line. Electric Sheep.
But what do they dream of...?
One bonus I really like about mareep is that in Nigeria there's a legend describing lightning as a ram which charges, while thunder is its mother telling it off for charging. Kind of neat to see a possible Sub-Saharan African cultural reference this early.
Minior's colors are also based on the specific colorations that meteors get when theyre close to the sun because of their composition!
Well yes, but also all the colors of the rainbow!
Mine would be Machamp. Simple, but so satisfying 😎💪
I have fond memories of a Fake Out/U-Turn Ambipom. Good times. 😊
Drednaw is also "Wanderd" spelled backward.
That... is very weird, and means almost nothing, but is cool!
I always think of honchkrow as an inquisitor.
I'll admit to not liking Seadra as a kid, but just because there was Seadramon as a major Digimon and I thought it was much cooler...
Who didn’t immediately figure out Nacli was a salt rock, I think the nacl thing is fairly obvious, and the salt cure move just adds to it.
You'd be surprised, people commented on this very video saying they never noticed the chemistry link.
@@emperorcubone I’m guessing you’re getting lots of Reactions
Like predicting the new ones? Also what beyond regional gimmicks, something like hardware integration; say the bottom screen for the DS, etc?
7:37 According to Lana in the Pokemon anime, "Water melts sands"
I have been making fakemon lately and I'm not too familiar with the ScarVi pokemon. I started making a salt miner pokemon called Nackle, before learning about the Nacli line 😅
Haha, don't worry about it, happens all the time! I created a fake Pokemon that was a sarcophagus Ghost/Ground type, and then they made Cofagrigus, and THEN they gave it a regional form with the Ground type, so they steal ideas a lot...
Hello Caleb. Thanks for the videos. Have a great day bud

I do love me some Wattrel!
I always though the "murk" part of Murkrow was for murky. Because murky means dark or gloomy.
Seriously, Hamwich was right there
Any Catholic Church has a tabernacle.
I thought Murkrow's name simply came from Murky Crow. The murder (as a group of crows) explanation also makes a lot of sense, though.
Geodude... Genius!
Honchkrow could be because he’s now the “head honcho.”
Shoutout to Chimecho for being best boy in the unused psychic types!
So unused, but still pretty good that's true!
Id probably like dreadmaw better if we didn't already have so many rock/water types.
I love Overqwil
Overqwil is a simple pun, but it also works on the extra level of just being SO much Qwilfish now...
@@emperorcubone also, remember when everyone thought Drednaw was going to be a Dragon type?
No! I don't remember hearing that at all, why would they think that?
@@emperorcubone it looks like a Dragon type
My fiancée says she will die on the hill of this following statement: “Sandygast and Palossand should have had their names swapped around”.
So they're the new Psy/Golduck? I could actually see that being the case, it would work pretty well!
Regional SandShrew/SandSlash
Should been called IceShrew/IceSlash
I think most people go with Snowshrew to keep the "S" sounds, but if they had come out post Wiglett you best believe they'd be a different species instead of a form!
@@emperorcubone yeah that messed up. It should be a co- evolution
Someone already mentioned my thoughts of Oricorio and Darwin's Evolution.
First, where's Absol? Second, I was laughing so hard as you said you loved Dreadnaw, bc I personally hate it, no offence intended. Third, Murkrow is (edit: was) recognised as one of the best VGC Pokémon bc of Prankster Tailwind
In my opinion Absol DOES get the appreciation it deserves, as fans love it so much but it is a great Pokemon for sure! And that's fine, I'm sure there's at least one Pokemon you love that I can't stand too...
@@emperorcubone Yeah, I honestly think many people despise me just for liking Quilladin and Lumineon and hating the entire Fuecoco line
@@timaeustanis359
I love lumineon too!!❤
It is so pretty and its smug personality is so funny!
It's like Snivy but even better l because it is inspired by favourite animal (the butterfly fish🐠)
I always thought Murkrow was based on the Danish word for dark "Mørk"...so it's like a dark crow
Oh, that's a good connection. Does the Danish name have that in there too?
@@emperorcubone unfortunately no. The names are the same as the English ones, it's not like other European countries for example Germany who created entirely new names.
I always thought it was "murk" like in "murky", referring to things that are dark and unclear
@@gawrkonatsu
It's like this in Italy too
As a rock type lover
I always love relincanth. One of the few coolest fishes around and is a living fossil pk
I just had to say that flamingo it's going to be one of the worst pokémon design
I'll confess I've never USED a Relicanth, because it's usually so late, but it would be fun I'm sure!
I love ambipom too 🥰
Lol Kinda wish this was in a top 10 or list format
Murkrow also includes the word murk which means dark. It's a dark type crow.
I had considered using Ambipom in Brilliant Diamond but conveniences and other issues forced me to go with Lopunny instead.
Well Aipom definitely needs to be found much earlier than it usually can be, that's for sure!
@@emperorcubone Perhaps. By the way, I'm still waiting for a video about predicting gen 4 Pokemon evolving further in the future and I also have a second request which is a video about predicting what old Pokemon could get new Pokemon based on themselves like Diglett and Tentacool did.
I respect Relicanth like I do a senior citizen.
That's fair! He is your elder...
You do know that Game Freak isn't going to consider the English name when designing regional variants, don't you?
Dont diss sham hatwich! Best boi
My favorite Pokemon is Nidorino. I am a firm believer that middle stage Pokémon dont get much love at all.
The edge teenage stage
Before they get old dad belly
Nidorino is one of the coolest middle stages ever!! And the best part is you can easily choose not to evolve it...
@@emperorcubone I never used to evolve it as a kid. If it's in the opening scene of the game, it has to be good enough right ? 😂
I can confirm that, with more examples being Pidgeotto, Charjabug & Floette.
Never liked the aipom line.
Chickorita line on the other hand.
So happy to see someone acknowledging Ambipom one of my favorite pokemon 🥰
YES finally I'm done seeing Ambipom slander the Aipom Line is my favorite pokemon of all time so seeing someone show it respect makes me smile
I love Aipom so much!
*Ferroseed enters the screen*
Any PM7 and/or MandJTV fans (I am both): ,,That dump stupid seed!"
Yay positivity
I think it's good to throw out some praise every now and again!
Eiscue is my favorite. Too bad people hate it.
I do not mind Eiscue nearly as much as other people, cause I love penguins!
People do not define what they are seeing or think deeper about it. sad
i also love palosand lol
To answer your question at the beginning: never. I never think of Spritzee as Aromatisse is my least favorite Pokémon lmao
My point exactly!
