    i know it appears early in crystal, but i always wanted a modern game where phanpy is available early. In crystal Phanpy and donphan had terrible movepools. i now used a donphan in scarlet and violet for the first time, since it never felt obtainable and viable before.

      I Phanpy and Donphan so much, so I would fully support them being early! I honestly kind of used a Phanpy as an honorary team member in Paldea when I caught one super overleved before the first gym (wouldn't even listen to me!) and kept it high thru the whole game.

    My guess as to why Poliwag isn't available early is cuz there's a trade for Jynx in Cerulean asking for Poliwhirl. & as a standalone Psychic-type, Jynx would be pretty strong early on & easiest to obtain compared to other Psychics (Mr. Mime trade is on an optional area). I know it as I used it in my Gen1 playthrough.

      If we end up getting a "simple" remake for Johto, moving the post game ones into the main game and making future evolutions possible during standard play+adjusting trainer teams with them is all the region needs. Even if Larvitar is only found on Victory Road and Mount Silver that's perfectly fine jst let Slugma also be found at Mt Mortar since in Kitakami there is no active lava but we still see them around.

      If Houndour was available early in GSC, all Pokémon in the first half of the game (before Blackthorn City/Team Rocket takes over the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City) would take neutral or super effective damage from at least one of his STAB moves except for Chuck's Poliwrath. Apparently I have a way different definition of what an early route is. I typically think of early routes as ones you can reach up to the 3rd gym and then 3rd gym to 6th gym are mid-game, and of course everything after is late game. I think a couple of these are fine where they are at, I would have rather seen Teddiursa/Phanpy (not the Crystal appearances) for gen 2 since they are locked away until after the 8th badge.

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean it's not TOO different I guess, but to me the third gyms are often too close to the 4-6 gyms as far as pacing goes (like in Kalos, Alola or even Unova) and more importantly I find it easy enough to build out a full Usable team by Gym Two most often, even if that's not the team you'll keep until the end so that's why I cut it there.

    • @nc5958
      @nc5958 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Route 45 is unlocked before the eighth gym. Unpopular Opinion: I think Route 45 was the right place for Teddiursa and Phanpy but they should have been Level 23, not Level 20. In Johto, the eighth gym has levels similar to the sixth gym of other regions. I also think Phanpy evolves too early. Both Teddiursa and Phanpy should have evolved at Level 30.

      Johto is terrible with its placement with so many Gen 2 pokemon being gated behind Kanto, swarms/extremely rare %, or breeding. Crystal and the remakes fixed it some but you're still really limited on making teams before the Elite 4 that are Johto only. Slugma would be a little better if it evolved around level 20 like Wooper (especially since they and their evolved forms share BSTs) though it still suffers due to the overabundance of water pokemon.

    I've thought about this topic a fair few times myself, with two immediate suggestions popping to mind; Slugma and Snom. Slugma is a perfect early game Fire type thanks to low stats and a varied but low power move-set whilst Snom's friendship evolution means that any late-game catching of it results in you never using the Snom form itself.
    0:16 - Agreed, I've replayed the starting couple gyms of Gens 1, 2 and 3 so many times.
    1:32 - Which always seemed particularly odd as Poliwag has feet. It's perfectly acceptable to see it on land. Oh neat, you bring up that very point at 1:44.
    2:28 - I'd say no to Snubbul purely because of the sheer amount of Normal types already found early on in Johto. I still say Slugma is the best choice for a Gen 2 Pokémon that should have been available earlier.
    4:34 - I feel Chatot gets a pass because you can trade for one before the 2nd Gym, just when you need a Flying type. I feel this sort of treatment would have benefited Rilou. Have it be the Pokémon you get for trading an Abra in Oreburgh City instead of a Machop.
    5:11 - My choice would be Snover. Sinnoh is the coldest region to date (Galar is worth considering for that given it's UK basis) and yet it's Ice types are found super late.
    5:44 - That is the case indeed, thus to keep to that theme, I would suggest making Munna, Audio and Timbur availble earlier. Munna and Audio, despite being in the very area, and only accessible after you beat the first gym. Timbur would also fit the construction like Dreamyard well, an whilst it wouldn't make a huge difference in timing, would still give one more option before the first gym that isn't super effective against Water/Grass/Fire.
    8:29 - I still stand by Snom as the Pokémon that should be made available earlier, but an earlier access to Galar's one Ground type of it's own (that isn't a regional variation) would be cool.

I know it’s a bit complicated, especially for their very locked ideas on what a Pokémon game should be but heck they could have done this sort of mix up between versions to actually give you another reason to buy the second game.

    I feel like Snubbul definitely should've been put more around the area of Goldenrod, like, it's an incredibly Whitney-coded Pokemon, she really should've had one on her team, and with that it would've made sense for them to be around there. As for Aipom though, I feel it's somewhat fine being locked behind Headbut. I mean, back when, it couldn't evolve, so it had above average stats, too good to be found on early routes at least probably, but not enough to really make it as a permanent team member, so I also think it makes more sense as a more gimmicky mon that can only be found in trees, and as a sort of consolation prize for not getting Heracross.
    I thought Barboach was fine in RSE, but I misremembered and thought you could get the Good Rod around the 3rd gym, not only after getting Surf. At that point, you should already be at level 30, the level Barboach evolves, so if you want to use one you'll basically immediately have a Wiscash if you train it to be on par asap. Spheal... I more so get, primarily due to it being an ice-type, but not due to them putting ice-types late for no reason, but because Hoenn is a tropical region with not much room to logically put a water/ice-type like Spheal. Maybe they could have it be accessible on one of the Surf-routes after the 5th gym? Would also make those optional routes worthwhile since you're getting a counter for the 6th gym out of it.
    I kinda get the argument with Chatot, but imo it's also salvaged a bit by being available as an in-game trade for a Buizel around the 2nd gym. Burmy... is a point I also kinda get, but honestly, the point you get it at is fine, you get access to honey trees pretty shortly after the 1st gym, and it being tied to honey trees seems fine as well. The main problem is really just... how honey trees function in itself...
    For Sewaddle and Venipede, I feel them being better than your usualy regional bug actually justifies them being later in BW pretty well, since them being better means there's still reason to put them in your party even as late as after the 2nd gym. Especially Venipede. Otherwise though, as many have pointed out, they ARE earlier in BW2.
    Dedenne being that late and hard to find actually isn't a-typical for Pika-clones. I mean, in Gen 1, Pikachu can be found in Viridian Forest but only with a low chance, in Gen 2 it is locked to postgame, with the only way to get one early being in Crystal to lucky with the Suprise Egg you get in Goldenrod. In Gen 5, Emolga is usually only found in shaking grass, and only from Route 5 onwards, that's around the 4th gym, Togedemaru can only be found in the Blush Mountain area, a completely missable area on the way to the 6th trial, and also with a lower chance, and Morpeko can also only be found on the way to the 6th gym in Galar. So... Dedenne on Route 11, on the way to the 3rd gym, actually isn't that bad.
    Bounsweet I agree should've been obtainable earlier, but also, at least in SM, you can get one as early as before the 2nd trial through trade. You have other grass-type options by then, including Fomantis just on that route, but still early enough for it to come into consideration as a party member.
    Not sure why Silicobra should be any earlier? It's about as early as Hippopotas in Sinnoh, on the way to the 4th gym, and even though by Galar-standards that's a little later into the game, I still feel that's a fair spot to put it.
    While I think getting Wattrel earlier on more easily would be neat, I feel basing that on it being Paldeas "regional bird" is a bit shallow when it seems pretty clear that Game Freak tried to break conventions with it in the first place. Like, overall, it can still be found reasonably early, I feel, it's just not one of the first Pokemon you can catch, and not one you can really catch throughout the entire tutorial-segment. As for Tandemaus, I feel its habitat is fine, it makes sense for it to be close to cities, and it's not like it's super rare, going to the 2nd gym the "intended" route, you're almost guaranteed to spot one in the grass just before entering the city.

    Yeah, poliwag definitely does seem as if the first opportunity comes way later than it should in Kanto. Probably doesn't help that it's listed so early in the dex - before the likes of bellsprout, geodude or abra, leading one to expect it can be caught before, or at least at a similar time to those early-mid-game 'mons. Psyduck has it even worse, being listed before mankey, despite it taking even later than poliwag to be a capturing option (it takes a super rod to catch one, unless you go all the way to Seafoam Islands).
    I don't think ice type is saved for later in the game for a gameplay standard so much as it is about the environments an ice type is likely to fit in being ones that are more suitable for the late game - if you don't want the whole region to be circumpolar, ice types are probably better reserved for the extreme latitudes of the map, or the peak of a mountain, which doesn't really feel like a terrain suitable for novice trainers. Likely spheal was sequestered to Shoal Cave because the rest of Hoenn seemed a bit too warm for a blubbery seal to seem at home. Perhaps it might have been an idea to take a page from jynx's book and have spheal be a trade option earlier on, so it'd have a chance to shine. I suspect bounsweet had a similar problem, mangosteens are from trees, so it makes more sense for them to live in the jungle, but it would be a bit weird to make a rookie trainer go through a jungle trek right away.
    As for dedenne, I get the impression that it was assumed people who did want it would want it because it's cute, so the developers might as well make them wait for it, not like the resident electric rodent sporting a breakout type will be passed over because it won't help you earn a badge. A lot of the other ones mentioned also may very well have been added for the challenge of capture rather than to be that useful in battle, most likely the idea is that after a player's blown through the gym battles and league, they'll still have to backtrack and put in the work to catch some elusive 'mons if they want to complete the pokédex. And seeing as they've probably beaten the game already, making these pokémon particularly strong isn't much of a priority, as there wouldn't be that many battles to face at that point. Making the hunt as much of a chore as it can be, especially in Sinnoh's case, might have been an overshoot.

    Kanto: Grimer and Koffing in my opinion, it's found waay too late in the game where you basically have tons of poison Pokemon including one of the most iconic duo of poison types being the Nidos and another choice is the Fossil pokemon, Kabuto, Omastar and Aerodactyl are only obtainable after the 6 gym and that's waaay too late and the route you need to cross already needs surf and worse, you get them at level 5, which you have to make them to your level, i would honestly move them up to 4th or 5th gym and getting them revived on Sylph Corp
    Johto: I honestly could say: "any pokemon of Johto dex" however the pokemon i find the most weirder to not get into the dex is two: Houndour and Teddiursa, Houndour is potentially the only Johto fire type you can encounter before the Elite 4 and it's no exaggeration, and it's literally the pokemon who can debut the new type added so I can't grasp why he doesn't show up after 3° or 4° gym and Teddiursa as well boggles me because it's a Pokemon who you already could find in crystal before the league, why? Why fix what wasn't broken
    Hoenn: Hoenn has few pokemon locked into later routes so my pick is Clamperl, this pokemon is only available after dive is unlocked which is after the 7° gym and that's horrible because you would already have a water Pokemon from literally every corner of Hoenn however it's not only late it's also a trade evolution
    Sinnoh: Hippopotas, it's a Pokemon who you need to basically do a side quest to obtain, you can only find him in a cave with low percentage of encounter however it increases by every different alphabet unown you catch and even catching all forms it doesn't give you anything beyond 20% which is a shame since outside the cave there's a literal route where you can catch Rhyhorn and it's implying you catch all 26 forms, good luck with that
    Unova: Unova in my opinion has the worst problem of late availability, however i have to give the trophy to Durant and Heatmor, the other late available pokemon are either after the 7° badge or outside the league, it's baffling that these 2 are inside the league and worse of all, you could fit them in most routes and it would make sense, I would move up Durant to Driftveil and Heatmor could be on the same route

    I agree with many of these. By the time you can get Spheal in ORAS, the level curve basically expects you to have Sealeo, and even Walrein. Bounsweet suffers from the same reason (without the in-game trade, by the time you can get it in SM your team is going to be in the mid 20s, and it is fully evolved at Level 29 in Gen 7), and it should've been in the berry piles on Melemele Island. I honestly feel that many of the Hisuian forms are too late, as I didn't get the first member of my final team (Growlithe) until Cobalt Coastlands, and the last two members (Zoroark and Braviary) weren't until the ice area. In Scarlet, I was able to get a Wattrel pre-Katy, though I had to go out of my way to find it and I didn't put it on my team until after badge 1 because it was Level 17.

    The only region where I would makes changes that impact the early game is Kanto. Most Water Type Pokémon are not available until the second half of the game. An easy fix: Move the Old Rod to Cerulean City. Move the Good Rod to Vermillion City. Move the Poliwhirl for Jynx in game trade to Fuchsia City. Now players that did not choose Squirtle can have more options for Water Type Pokémon earlier in the game. For other regions, I would make changes that impact the middle of the game.

    inb4 watchin to give my own opinion here: Snom rly shudve been as early to find as Sizzlipede. The fire and ice bugs just go so well together and the game is way more enjoyable if you get them early on
    And i say this given that when i played Shield, thats exactly what i did. I had a friend trade me a Snom egg and a Sizzlipede egg; and i swapped out my starter for a Fire Bug and Ice Bug combo. And it was sm fun, esp as i also stayed only in Bug types and still was able to have a devastatin team thruout. I love type challenges for pokemon, they make it way more fun to me
    But if id wanted to do that per the games rules, idve only been able to get Sizzlipede somewhat early and wudve had to wait til practically end game to get Snom... Like wtaf?
    Bug pokemon deserve early route rep, esp the coolest of bug pokemon. Snom deserves to be on Route 3!
    Heck, if Snom and Sizzlipede had both been on route 3, they cudve even done a thing where they were version exclusives; which wudve made them even cooler im honest o

    Most of this just sounds like plain impatience. I mean, you don't even need a full team of six during the early game, let alone an ideal team to carry you through the entire rest of the game. I think it's good to have some catches to look forward to even on later routes.
    This is I think especially true with alternative grass, fire, and water types, since delaying them helps make the starter a more defining aspect of the team. That said, in gen1, I could admit Poliwag comes a bit too late, or really any water type that isn't Squirt or Gyarados. Oddish/Bellsprout can be found north of Cerulean and Growlithe/Vulpix can be found east of Lavender. Really the problem is that the Good Rod being in Fushia just comes far too late. I mean, heck, depending on the route taken to get to Fushia, it's entirely possible to acquire the Super Rob first.
    Spheal in gen3 is a bit problematic as well. While it doesn't need to be an early route catches, it probably should have been mid game. The only three stage line exclusive to late game should be pseudo legendries.

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Maybe some could be impatience, but the main point is that many of these Pokemon are found beyond the point of their prime usefulness, and it would help people appreciate them more fully if you didn't have to play catchup every time you caught one too late, like Spheal!

      While true usually by the 5th or 6th gym most players have a full team put together or have just a single slot left. Obviously it depends on the game as some gens are better than others with their level curves but in general it usually requires quite a bit of grinding in the mid to late game to bring new team members up to the rest of the party's levels.

    • @EmeralBookwise
      @EmeralBookwise 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jcohasset23: Oh, I can agree with that. The 5th and 6th gyms are late enough into the game that it's entirely reasonable for a player to have their full team of 6 set, or maybe a team of 5 with one late game holdout left to go.
      This video however seemed to be complaining about the inability to have a full team before the 2nd gym, and that's just much too early to be a problem.
      Heck, I'd even consider suggesting the opposite, and that maybe the games should limit team size at the start to just 3 Pokémon, with one additional slot added per badge and thus not reaching the 6-slot max until acquiring the 3rd badge.
      That would even fit with lore in more recent games that has tried to explain why most NPCs have such small teams by saying only exceptional trainers can control multiple Pokémon at once.

      @@EmeralBookwise Adjusting the size of the team based on number of badges is an interesting idea as it always seemed silly that few trainers have a full team until end game. Heck even some members of the Elite 4 don't have 6 pokemon until rematches. I've also seen hacks that have battles where the player chooses among their party to have a 3 vs 3 or so with certain trainers to make battles a little more interesting.
