Brilliant video and review. Just had my first flight with the Mini 2 yesterday, it is such a great drone and after watching this have ordered the strobe and underneath mount. Many thanks for the discount. Keep the videos coming.
While this is a good video and some good information, I prefer the Firehouse Technology ARC "V" lights for use on my drones. I did a bunch of research on different lights and found the ARC V have a brighter light. I use them on my Mavic Pro (Original), my Mini 2 and now my Mavic 2 Pro. Would like to see you maybe do a comparison between the two and see what you think.
My favorite of all I’ve made and bought is the ARC V with their printed mount . I also made a huge light board that cycles through every color. I mounted it on top using Velcro. The mini can handle quite a bit more weight than people think until it starts getting prop over speeds or diverting to payload mode.
Another great video Gavin. I bought these 3 weeks ago (white, red and green) now wished I had waited lol. These lights are fantastic! I had looked at so many before even getting my mini 2 and these stood out the most for me. Keep up the good work and ill see you in the next video 🤗

Great in depth review and they look great but can you see the rear facing strobes from the front of the drone? If not, the red and green would not give any advantage for indicating the orientation of the drone. Perhaps a mount that would position the LEDs down-firing would be better?

From when I spoke directly to the CAA there are no set requirements regarding night flying is concerned as long as you have vlos of the drone and surrounding area. Suppose we can only take that as it comes really! I asked specifically regarding distance and the 500m was not mentioned in that section of my question ( I will be doing another video on this topic soon ) it's fair to say that since I flew 2000m back with no map or compass I guess that proves VLOS perfectly

Hi I have already purchased the Flytron Strobon Cree light in white and can vouch for the incredible brightness . I use a underbody mount which I got from a popular auction site . This I got in bright yellow, with regards to making sure the drone is turned on before mounting the light I have drilled a 5 mm hole through the mount so can still turn on and off the drone . Just one last point did I see you weigh the drone with the gimbal cover on ? Great video as usual 👍
Hi Chris - Brilliant lights I must agree - that makes plenty of sense about drilling the hole that is certainly a good tip, I questioned myself after your comment haha - no the gimbal cover was off I just had it on and off at various points in the video :) thank you for watching
Another relevant video. I ordered some from China only last week after a scare with an raf plane in the Lake District. Hopefully these should aid the drone been seen much further away.
Strobe arrived today and I made the mistake of looking at it and nearly blinded myself. The 1000lm brightness 🔆 seems genuine. It’s like a flashgun pulsing.
Thanks Gavin bought one and thanks for the discount code, saved me a couple quid. Keep up the good work. Discount code has to be entered in lower case with no gaps.
During the day and night the white is the best yes, having anothet colour is only really beneficial for orientation if it's just a VLOS aid then just white will be fine 😊
Hi Gavin , another great test , they look well worth while investing in and thanks very much for the discount code , looks like found my next accessory for my mini 2 and good to see they stay under the 250g with mounts and lights.
Thanks for another useful video. The Flytron strobes seem to be out of stock in many places at the moment. But I did contact Hitzone Graphics and ordered not only a belly light holder for the Flytron strobes but skins for both my Mini 2 and 4 Pro. Great guy to work with and I really liked the choice of colors. I'm focusing on visibility in today's environment and the fact that the Mini is so hard to see against the gray sky. Thanks for the tip that lead me to his business. 👍
You're most welcome! He's a top bloke and does great work I'm glad you chose to use him! I know many people who have had his wraps amongst other things and been totally happy! Appreciate you watching the video, hopefully flytron get them in stock soon!
Love the channel....total newbie here but have just ordered a red and green one to go with my Ulanzi multi colour one....will also order through your link the Cree Holders....Cheers
@@GAVINHR Sorry. Missed that bit. Being pedantic -- are the scales calibrated and in date. I have 3 scales the same as yours and they show different values for anything I try and weigh at around the 250g mark. 248, 250 and 251, in my case for the same test weight I was using.
Hi there it's no problems - easily missed, I actually have tried them on another pair of scales and got the same result, plus that 249 is in line with what others have achieved and reported also. These scales are quite old however I tried multiple combinations just not shown in the video, drone. Lights, holders lights in holders etc I tried a multitude of measurement and got 249g each time
@@GAVINHR Thanks for that. I've got 4 on my Mavic Pro but which makes it look like a UFO - Had a few concerned folk during some of my flights. Just trying to keep under the 250g which is why I've ordered the Mini 2
Oh wow really? These are rated for 3miles by the manufacturer, I could see them so so clear at 2000m which is enough but if I wanted to go further I could of seen them just fine
Can you show us if you mount the strobes pointing downwards? And then can you see them from all angles? From the front surely you can’t see these stobes how you mounted them? Thanks 🤞🏼💡.
Hi Gavin Just ordered a strobe to try on my mini 2 I'm not on Facebook to order an underneath bracket is there another way to purchase please ,nice 1 for the code . Cheers Paul.
Quality video Gav. It goes to show having the correct lighting in a situation is hopefully going to save your drone. I use these all to time mainly red even during the day with the 3m dual lock wich is adequate for me. Thanks again
Thanks for watching - and the suggestion on them after the last video absolutely it will - we are now in a time where VLOS is everything and these do the trick!
Nailed it again Gavin... I would have said that was a slam dunk, but you wouldn't want to dunk your drone in The Humber. 🤣👍 Seriously though, that is a great VLOS. I'll bet you're tempted to capture a time-lapse of the Humber Bridge by moonlight... 🌙
Lindsey... You want to talk about dunking my drone? Keep posted... 🤷Thank you very much! With VLOS and flying home from 2000m using VLOS only I think that proves it haha
Just got some blue front red back, do u know if you have payload on does it limit your max distance to 160ft it wouldn't let me go further as I had it on due to landing gear and gimble guard iv not had chance to try again with payload off if not why can I only reach 160ft when set to max limit, just ordered some Yagi 2.4's mini1
Well that kicks the 500 metre max distance vlos out the window ,because you have managed to maintain vlos nice one Gavin ,ps I got one of these myself a couple of months back and was quite impressed.
I don't think anybody could argue that point anymore could they! I know the ending was a big boring but I wanted to prove no compass no picture on screen and no map and I flew from 2000m. I just had to include it !
Yes, I do have very good eyesight and on a day that is slightly cloudy I could easily look down and pick them back up again I would say the 460 mark I think it was in this video
I bought the Cree strobe lights from Flytron in red and green and you're right, they are incredibly bright. i also purchased the holders for my DJI Mini 2 which fit perfectly. Problem is, the total weight is now 52.9 grams. Unless of course my scales are out. What to do?
I would say your scales are out - there are many people running these holders and 2 X lights and within 249g so I would think that's the problem unless you have any other extras on it?
@@jeremymilnes7781 I was thinking about buying the holders but in combination with the lights they may be too heavy for my drone. How heavy is a holder and light combined? If its more than 5g then two would be too heavy for my drone too. And out of curiosity how heavy is your drone including battery?
Nav lights need to be mounted as close as possible to the front and give vision from dead ahead to side on,Another white light should show 180 degrees off the back, all these lights need to be solid. Not blinking not flashing or strobing. Only light flashing should be an all round underneath landing light when landing. That is how directional night time navigation is done.
Just tried to order the CREE strobe, but my virus checker prevented me accessing the site saying it was insecure! The virus checker is Kaspersky. I would be interested in your comments Gavin. Loved the review btw.
Strobes are useful but regarding the orientation of the drone you just surely refer to the flying arrow on the Google maps to show front facing..? Simples!
Totally agree with you. however at the time people were complaining that you could see strobes flashing but not orientation so I thought I would have a little fun and prove otherwise
I thought that the strobes are for the benefit of manned aircraft. By mounting a strobe underneath the drone it will not be very visible from above, so wouldn't mounting on top be better? As a bonus though the rear mounted strobes improve your visibility of the drone.
Hi Ian, as far as I am aware the 400ft ceiling is there to keep UAS and mainstream aircraft completely separate therefore unless breaking the regulations you will be flying no where near the flight path of any aircraft, it is up to the UAS operator to see and avoid anything not the other aircraft therefore if you can see your drone and the surrounding area that allows you to take action. Basis this there would be no need to mount on the top but of course if you wanted to then that's the users choice, in the UK the CAA do not have any requirements as to placement
Wonderful video, thanks. You hoped it was the most comprehensive possible. The whole video I was hoping that you would test at three miles. That’s the requirement that seems the hardest to meet, or even test. I was hoping you would have a friend three miles away and have them take some video to confirm that claim. That would have been a more comprehensive test. There are Chinese ones that are much less expensive than Cree that also claim three miles. A side-by-side with them would be good. If the Cree won your sponsor might even like it. Thanks for the discount code!
Used the lights on my phantom 4 different coloured ones from red green to bright white brilient Hook and loop tape to any thing like p4 rear and front legs mavic pro 2 to extended legs From amozan these on legs before drone law saw em for 4 miles on a good night away i n the barnsley area They still work after 4 yr from fly tron Great kit We used blue on front and white on rear flying them a few year ago to frighten off drug dealers they thought it was the the police with drones they moved on
Sadly yes... with the Mavic mini if you add anything to it then it will be over 249g, but then don't forget that only means you cannot fly in urban areas- you can still fly in countryside environments where you are likely to be 150m away from people anyway
@@GAVINHR Are you sure ? they state 4g for one Cree strobe, Mini 2 is 242g with battery + 4g = 246g, not using a mount, just Velcro another 1 or 2g. Are you referring to the Mini 1 ?
Hi gavin on your recommendations I bought the cree lights and the 2 holders but when I weigh the drone with them fitted it's coming in at 252grammes which is over the limit I've weighed it on 2 different machines with the same outcome I've spent overv£30 on these to not use it ,am I doing anything wrong ?
Do you have anything else on your drone at all Andy? Mine was a naked drone with both holders and both lights, and a memory card, your gimbal cover isn't on is it? also another TH-camr Nobbygreen also weighed his with the same and his was also 249g
@@GAVINHR no it's the same battery sd card that's all even put scales on different places still 252 every time this might be stupid question thevlights have plastic round them I'm assuming that should stay on
Sorry for the delay, if I'm honest I'm not 100% sure unless the holders are slightly bigger that's all I can think? Drop him a message and i am sure he will sort them for you 🙂 mine are certainly 249g all in
Lol, I'm colorblind hey, so the orientation won't help me at all, but I was thinking of getting a Lume Cube, as those can be seen really really far at night... Sweet... Green and Blue I wine able to differentiate but green and red, nope... Maybe if the red is really darker or something.. But usually I rely on my FPV view on my phone.... Today I flew my Mini 2 1km over Sofia city! I went to a place I've never been able to reach before, well I haven't tried cz I was afraid, but the Mini 2 is a real lil eagle..... Went 1km and had perfect, full signal over heavily wi-fi polluted Sofia city! It's incredible really this Ocusync 2.0! I know now my Mini 2 really has the ability to fly quite far! Yeah another reason I wanna use the Lume cube is because I think even at like 2km or 3km it can be seen during the day or something... Even if not, I really still wanna gets me some kinda strobe light, a very bright one... PS: especially if there is wind, I'd most definitely use the new Attitude indicator, it would be great to know how me Mini is fighting the wind... Sweet Keep well and be safe! 🛸🛸
Sofia and UK are completely different jurisdictions. We have VLOS police here and I think Gavin is addressing an important point which gives people a bit more freedom while keeping it all legal. (most of it is very arbitary)
@@haroonvlogs5437 I don't fly higher than 500m or further than 1km from my balcony... I keep it kinda close.. Gonna upload my original files to TH-cam, 4K 30fps and 4K 25fps and 2.7K 60fps videos, each in 2 original parts.. Sweet Keep well and be safe bro! 🛸🛸🛸
A camera recording will never show as well as the human eye naturally, if you saw until the end of the video I fly home with no compass or map providing I could see the drone from that distance away
I would certainly say so! Although it may be the "boring" bit of the video I left that in on purpose flying out then back with no instruments whatsoever proves I had VLOS especially over water and at night in strong winds ! Actually thinking about it I was probably a bit crazy 😧
@@GAVINHR it's a good test. As long as you are flying with the wind on return the mini 2 is solid. Really reliable piece of kit. No sensible person is crazy enough to go wild with their £500+ worth of drone. These lights are good idea also good demonstration of the use. Really like the video. Like the nice desk setup. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, indeed I switched to this setup as this video was going to be too complex to do in front of a green screen but yes they worked well I think 😃 appreciate the compliment thank you
Please be advised you are flying illegally, so folks, do not copy this at home. Visual Line of Sight is defined by the UK Civil Aviation Authority as no more than 500m, whether you can see it or not. In fact for very small drones it may need to be less. The point is not only that you can see the drone, but that you can quickly and safely orientate and take evasive action if required. From CAP722 - Page 38 - 2.1 Operating Principals - 2.1.1 Visual line of sight operations (VLOS): 'The CAA will normally accept that the VLOS requirement is met when the UA is flown out to a distance of 500 metres horizontally from the remote pilot, but only if the aircraft can still be seen at this distance.'
@@GAVINHR that's fine, but please understand an Operational Authorisation would not be approved by the UK CAA for such a flight, as they too are limited by law to 500m maximum. You would need a UAS Operating Safety Case for BVLOS, as you are even beyond the EVLOS limit of 750m.
Amazing little strobes! Got a white and a red - white for the front, red for the back, much like a car (cos I'm still learning!). Brilliant!

Hi mate .. if you search for James Hitzone mods on Facebook that's the guy who does them 😃
The lights are on the back of the drone what about from front view?? I’m still halfway through video so you may still answer
Do you have another link for the light holders. The one you posted just goes to a Facebook page that doesn’t give any ordering options. Thanks!
If you go to that facebook page and drop him a message he will give you the prices - its not great I know I will mention it to him
Thanks Gavin bought one and thanks for the discount code, saved me a couple quid. Keep up the good work. Discount code has to be entered in lower case with no gaps.
You're welcome Mike!
Hi Gavin, would you say these flytron are still the best today for the mini 2 👍
Hi Robert, yes 100% people stick these huge ulanzi things on them but these are a lot better still
@@GAVINHR cheers Gavin, and for day time flying would you recommend white light and a red ?
During the day and night the white is the best yes, having anothet colour is only really beneficial for orientation if it's just a VLOS aid then just white will be fine 😊
@@GAVINHR cheers Gavin, think I feel a purchase or two heading my way 👍
Don't forget to use the discount code GAVINHR for 15% off also 👌
The map feature is the best way to fly the drone if you cannot see it properly, plus there is the RTH feature!
Absolutely agree with you, I just wanted to prove that I could see it all that distance away 😀 I have always preferred tj fly using the map
That is a neat little clip. Very functional, very minimal. Need one for a 2s
They work great Steve!
Cheers Gav, have just ordered the strobes and sent a message to Hitzone. How much did you pay for the leg mounted holders btw?
Hi,. To be honest he sent me them to test I believe they are around £6 mate
Thanks mate, sorted.
Outstanding as usual! 👍🏾
Also thank you for th d code
You're most welcome! thank you for watching!
Hi Gavin , another great test , they look well worth while investing in and thanks very much for the discount code , looks like found my next accessory for my mini 2 and good to see they stay under the 250g with mounts and lights.
Thank you for the kind comment! they really work well I am impressed! enjoy the discount code mate - they are not the cheapest but it helps a little!

How long do you charge these far?
2 hours for 2 hours of use according to the manufacturer 😊
Shouldn’t navigation lights be positioned forwards
Where can I purchase the mounts?
Fantastic test, I'm really impressed with those lights.
My only regret is my second recording device not picking up the lights, as far as the eye goes I could see them so clearly!
Hey gavin, is it possible to be able to stop the lights from flashing and instead keep a constant light on With these?
Thank you Gavin you just saved me £7;👌👌👌👍 Top man 👍
Great vid Gavin
Shame I live in OZ
Would like to have secured the lights and holders
Cheers and keep it up
is there no international shipping? I am sure the holder maker would ship to OZ for you!
I’ll look into it cheers

What weight is the drone with the 2 strobes plus the 3D mounts?
249g 😊 you can see me weigh it in the video

Been using flytron for 8 years great strobes
In majorly impressed! It's just a shame my camera couldn't pick up how clear they were
@@GAVINHR to say you can see for miles? Had a strobe on a long range plane and not visible
They look great but distance is a bit iffy
Oh wow really? These are rated for 3miles by the manufacturer, I could see them so so clear at 2000m which is enough but if I wanted to go further I could of seen them just fine

Flew mine last night to 3000m, could still see them clearly and no binoculars required!.
Awesome video. I appreciate the knowledge. 🖖

Can you show us if you mount the strobes pointing downwards? And then can you see them from all angles?
From the front surely you can’t see these stobes how you mounted them?

Nailed it again Gavin... I would have said that was a slam dunk, but you wouldn't want to dunk your drone in The Humber. 🤣👍

I just had to include it !

no effect at all :)
Where do u get these cre keys thanks in advance
Hey Gav, would you say It helps improve vlos in the day ie lookg down on your controller looking up not seeing it like will you see it flashing ?
Yes, I do have very good eyesight and on a day that is slightly cloudy I could easily look down and pick them back up again I would say the 460 mark I think it was in this video

The strobon Cree lights. Using that code at checkout gets you 15% off 🙂
I bought the Cree strobe lights from Flytron in red and green and you're right, they are incredibly bright. i also purchased the holders for my DJI Mini 2 which fit perfectly. Problem is, the total weight is now 52.9 grams. Unless of course my scales are out. What to do?
I would say your scales are out - there are many people running these holders and 2 X lights and within 249g so I would think that's the problem unless you have any other extras on it?
@@GAVINHR no other extras. I’ll check on some different scales. Thanks
Did you remove the camera cover before weighing? My drone weighs 240g and 245g with the cover on.
@@PHOT0GUY yes, I removed it. Recently weighed it again on some very accurate scientific scales. 252 grams with lights and holders attached.
@@jeremymilnes7781 I was thinking about buying the holders but in combination with the lights they may be too heavy for my drone. How heavy is a holder and light combined? If its more than 5g then two would be too heavy for my drone too. And out of curiosity how heavy is your drone including battery?
I've orderd a green one .
Where do I best mount it on a mini 2 with the velcro tape?
The most popular place seems to be at the back of the rear door with people, hope that helps! 👍
@@GAVINHR the door of the battery compartment?
Awesome 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks Marco!
Cool! I’m sold for some
You won't be disappointed 🙂
Nav lights need to be mounted as close as possible to the front and give vision from dead ahead to side on,Another white light should show 180 degrees off the back, all these lights need to be solid. Not blinking not flashing or strobing. Only light flashing should be an all round underneath landing light when landing. That is how directional night time navigation is done.
Just tried to order the CREE strobe, but my virus checker prevented me accessing the site saying it was insecure!
The virus checker is Kaspersky.
I would be interested in your comments Gavin.

Ah perfect! You're welcome ! Yeah you will find him on Facebook
Basis this there would be no need to mount on the top but of course if you wanted to then that's the users choice, in the UK the CAA do not have any requirements as to placement
th-cam.com/video/m8ngVPq7OBg/w-d-xo.html - more lights
how can i buy the bottom mount and the legs mount... pls give me the details...
I did give the details :) the link to buy them from the person who makes them is in my video description! They are really good
Hitzone Graphics - look them up on Facebook.
Used the lights on my phantom 4 different coloured ones from red green to bright white brilient
Hook and loop tape to any thing like p4 rear and front legs mavic pro 2 to extended legs
From amozan these on legs before drone law saw em for 4 miles on a good night away i n the barnsley area

We used blue on front and white on rear flying them a few year ago to frighten off drug dealers they thought it was the the police with drones they moved on
Good test gavin
Boa noite, poderia mim passar a referência da bateria desses leds?
The lights link throws up a Kaspersky data leak warning. Any other place to buy?
This keeps happening I have no idea why, TH-cam removed the link then reinstated it, it's s genuine website and hundreds buy from it a day
just found this after buying a mini 2 and bought green and red with discount code. Does anyone have an STL to the mounts? would like to print my own.
Would these lights make the original mavic mini over 249 grams?
Sadly yes... with the Mavic mini if you add anything to it then it will be over 249g, but then don't forget that only means you cannot fly in urban areas- you can still fly in countryside environments where you are likely to be 150m away from people anyway
@@GAVINHR Thanks for the great comment.
@@GAVINHR Are you sure ? they state 4g for one Cree strobe, Mini 2 is 242g with battery + 4g = 246g, not using a mount, just Velcro another 1 or 2g. Are you referring to the Mini 1 ?

I think so too!

Hopefully this will shtup all the VLOS police out there. Most drone pilots are responsible people and I think this vlog settles it.
From CAP722 - Page 38 - 2.1 Operating Principals - 2.1.1 Visual line of sight operations (VLOS):
'The CAA will normally accept that the VLOS requirement is met when the UA is flown out to a distance of 500 metres horizontally from the remote pilot, but only if the aircraft can still be seen at this distance.'
Send me your email address, I will send you my OA for this flight from the CAA, of course, if you want to get clever that is.
