  • Amazon & Netflix are changing consumer expectations of how they want to interact with “lame” industries like insurance. New business models like a sharing economy (Airbnb and Uber) and social brokers are emerging in insurance. Disruptors in the market called “Insurtech” innovators are capitalizing upon these opportunities. The insurance industry of tomorrow, will be incredibly different from what we see today. Unlike today, it will be a technology savvy, youthful and cool market to work in. Millennials will be a big part of that change. Laura is VP of Business Innovation for Guidewire Software. She keeps her finger on the pulse of insurance industry disruption to coach carriers on how they can innovate their business and achieve a competitive advantage. She brings innovative ideas from the field into Guidewire products; there are now five InsuranceSuite features that represent her development initiatives. Before joining Guidewire 11 years ago, Laura worked as a consultant for Deloitte and Accenture, but started her career in the insurance industry working at State Farm Insurance. She has an MBA from the University of Toronto. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am a fourth year actuarial student, I wasn't so sure that this is the career path I wanted to take up until now. I am glad I saw this. Insurance is about service to the community, helping out in times of crises. Thank you.

Great talk, insuretech is the future of most insurance markets. She is spot on about what insurance is. Insurance is an industry that is everywhere but no where. Very rarely do you meet people who work in this, yet your generally required to have it. Good talk!

So what you have is a way to collect less premiums. What happens when that pool draws more money out than you are taking in?

You invest those premiums in high interest investments. Therefore there is way more money than the face value premiums.

Money is the best to be insured. Say 50$ insured for $ 5000 in two years if you loose insignificant others get paid.
