In hindsight I should have gone into a bit more detail about the test, i.e., how I generated the known signal (audacity), and I should have also turned the level up to "red" in GarageBand and exported the GarageBand project back into Audacity to check the levels. And maybe added some conclusions and advice! But this video was really a spur-of-the moment thing that I knocked out in an afternoon. Anyway... hopefully it's still a starting point for you to be able to see what's happening.

Thank you for this! I wish they’d just add the labels, but this is a great way to get a basic understanding of what the meters are saying. Funny enough, right after I made my video I spent the rest of the night digging into Adobe Audition a bit more and wow- it’s so perfect for podcast editing.

Thanks, you have aided my understanding, but I am definitely going to have to play with it and figure out how to get the desired final decibels.

Hi! At 1:51 you have an enlarged input meter in the center of your video. Is it possible to have such a large floating meter when recording? I could make do without the numerical if I could see the bloody thing. Thanks for any help.

I usually no longer look at the meter volume. I use the visual EQ to read the its loudness.

Can you add a visual EQ for input metering? I need to see what's going in and cannot with this little color-coded meter thingy.

I wish they did use numbers. I’m colorblind.

Yeah, seems like poor accessibility with colours only.

Can you recommend a free software that displays the numerical values? I'm searching for an application that I can use as a makeshift decibel meter, as all actual decibel meter apps are exclusively for iphone/ipad. I just need to be able to measure db live, if you could suggest anything that would be fantastic! Thank you!

I have also been looking and found plugins that will do this, but only after there is something recorded on the track . . . not for input metering.
